I don't really love BBQ. I think I just had too much of it growing up in Georgia and then way over did it in college since a BBQ place was one of the only really good restaurants in the area worth visiting. I'll go out of my way for "damn good BBQ", but anything less than excellence is just a disappointment. Dave's BBQ brought excellence to the table. It's easy for me to see why they are in the top 10 of the 2020 list for Yelp's Top 50 Places to Eat in Coastal Virginia. I stopped by around noon on a week day and there was a steady stream of people coming in and out, but it didn't get too crowded for social distancing and they do let you call ahead. (They encourage you to call ahead if you're placing a large order.) They are closed for dining on the inside, but they do have two picnic tables outside if you're lucky enough to snag one on a beautiful day. I got the brisket platter which came with two sides. I chose potato salad and the chipotle coleslaw. Everything was phenomenal! The brisket was fall-apart tender and juicy. The potato salad was delicious and I don't think I'll ever come here without getting their coleslaw again - so good. Not super spicy, but something different than just plain coleslaw. I also got an order of three corn bread biscuits- sweet and not overly "cake-like". Perfect for something semi-sweet after your meal but not too sweet that it feels like you're eating meat with a side of cake- perfect for the setting. Now for dessert.. I did get dessert of course. Their banana pudding deserves an award of its own. Outstanding, thick, creamy- the receipt for my order even has "mmm mmm" next to the banana pudding- they itemized the experience of eating it. If you're a fan of BP- don't skip this treat. Another local business already got me eating BBQ again after years of swearing it off, now I'm thrilled I don't have to drive all the way to NFK for some damn good BBQ. Maybe I'll even start craving it again! My only minor complaint was that they didn't have the sauces ready to grab & go. I got a little overwhelmed looking at the options in bottles and they didn't have little containers I so I could just try an assortment. In order to get sauce I would have needed to commit to putting it on my meat and I wasn't wanting to do that. Good BBQ shouldn't need sauce anyways in my opinion, thankfully everything was delicious without it (because this is good BBQ). I still would have liked to try them though. read more

I ordered a pound of pulled pork bbq and a small coleslaw but as soon as I saw the potato salad, I knew I needed a side of that, too. Dave Oh Dave! Finally had a chance to try them Out. I heard so many good things about them from my coworkers and I had time today to drive out and see what it's all about! I drove pass it twice (according to Google Maps). It's between a car lot and Shell's gas station, at the end of the white building. It's not a huge place and I was doing take out anyways... Brisket - tender, flavorful, size was generous. Rib - It was a little tough. I couldn't finish it. Leg quarter- fresh off the smoker and it was good! The skin had a sweet burnt caramelization to it. So YUM! Chicken had a nice smoke flavor. Potato salad - Actually the best I've had at any restaurant hands down! It was mustard based and all ingredients chopped pretty well. Creamy and full of flavor. Creamy Coleslaw- very creamy! But not to the point it's nasty. It has a nice sweet undertone. I enjoyed it. Baked beans- It was very mustary and peppery. I didn't enjoy it that much but that's all up to how you like baked beans. Overall, it was a solid visit and great BBQ. There's more to try out. And to say they serve generous portions is an understatement. You won't find any scales to weigh the portions at Dave's!! And you most certainly will not go home hungry! If you don't know, they opened a new location on Laskin Rd and they did an excellent job designing this place. I was very impressed with the layout. It opened today, Jan 1st. They season their meats while barbecuing them and leave it up to you, as the customer, to put your choice of sauce (if so desired), on your food-completely up to you, as to which particular sauce you choose and then you are able to control how much bbq sauce you want to put onto your food.
