Came in with a rather large group of about 8 adults and 4 children, (we know that's a large group and we're willing to split up and wait whatever time required). After being seated at the bar the service the girl working behind the bar was extremely rude. $20 for 3 lemonades and 3 teas, absolutely ridiculous. Ok, so we read on other sites that Dave's is dog friendly. Not really. Here's the deal: dogs are allowed on the front porch, at the entrance to this bar and grill, where patrons are walking past you on the wooden sidewalk. There are maybe three pub tables there. You then have to order your meal as takeout--no table service on the front porch. Then, when they call you, you have to pick it up in those little styrofoam boxes with the plastics utensils. Except, they don't actually call you--you have to somehow telepathically "know" that your order is ready and then tackle an employee to actually give it to you. Oh, and also no alcohol on the front porch (you know, liquor laws and all). So, we ate our dry burgers with no cold beer to wash it down. And, I have to say that this "no alcohol outside the bar on our front porch where you are eating our food" is pretty ironic since when the musician, when taking a break between sets, sat down at one of the pub table next to us with a bro and LITERALLY LIT UP A DOOBIE. What the heck? You can smoke dope on the front porch but you can't drink an amber ale?? The food? It was ok. The hamburger was over cooked and I was blessed with maybe 12 flavorless steak-cut fries. Waited around and no one helped us even though they saw us. Went to the counter where people were paying and were advised they don't serve people that seat themselves. Stopped in to Dave's Cafe for dinner with some friends after finding our first choice was closed for the night. Glad that the other place was closed and we came here instead. The menu has a good selection for all tastes; burgers, sandwiches, salads, you really couldn't make a bad choice. My normal "go to" is a salad but I opted for something different. We all got burgers. What made the choice easy for me was the fact they had tator tots. A real treat since most places don't offer them. My burger was awesome. Toasted bun, meat cooked well (I don't like seeing pink let alone red meat) and the tator tots were crisp and perfectly cooked. Really made the meal for me. One person in our group got the Green Chili cheeseburger and was a bit disappointed when it arrived without a bun but with what looked to me like corn tortillas replacing the bun. It was messy requiring a fork to eat, and would have required a bib if it was served with a bun. But, knowing my friend, he would have welcomed the bun and the mess (as the messier it is the better it usually tastes) There wasn't a big crowd when I was there, which was surprising for a Saturday night, but considering the temperature (it was very cold) and the fact it was winter and the restaurant is located in a mountain town I'm sure they very rarely have a wait for a table in the winter time. I can see the summer being a totally different story. I would wait in line for a table no doubts. When I come back to town for another visit I will definitely be coming here again. This was very underwhelming and exactly what I expected from a small mountain town. The food was flavorless and bland. We ordered the burrito, cheese burgers, and loaded nachos. Nothing was worth writing home about. The beer selection was just ok, nothing like Cloudcroft Brewing Company. Staff was very friendly and the only good quality about the place. Main points: 1. Consistent quality over the years 2. Expect to wait to be seated and to get your food 3. Don't order ANYTHING to be changed or added (even a simple side of something) 4. Even if the staff messes up, expect to get backlash if you say anything. Well, I guess when you're a decent restaurant in a tiny tourist town you can afford to treat customers however you want. I've been to Dave's several times over the past however many years and the food has always been of reliable quality. This time as far as the food went it was much the same. The customer service and the time it took to get our food was unacceptable though. With such a small place you can always expect a little bit of a wait, but not an hour. Especially when other tables get their food faster than yours. We only had 4 orders (3 burgers and a chicken salad). I ordered the salad and it is pretty obvious by their menu that they don't accept changes or substitutions on any orders. I asked our waiter if they could just add a side of Frank's Hot Sauce to my order, tossed would be great, but just a side would be fine. He promised me he'd get my chicken tossed and I repeated that I wanted "whatever was easiest" for the chefs. It was no big deal (even if they had just said "No we won't even add a side")... Apparently it was a huge deal. I don't know if the waitstaff misplaced our order or the cooks held it back just to teach us a lesson or something. But like I said before, they're a small place and they get pretty busy. I wasn't in a bad mood but when I went to the desk to ask if our order would be our soon (55 minutes at this point because I happened to receive a text right when we sat down and gave our order) they started blaming us for not being patient and then I heard the cooking griping about us asking for a "special order." The waitstaff said they were waiting on my salad. Ok? So at least pass out the rest of the table so it doesn't go cold... Maybe all the staff needs some kind of training on time management and kitchen organization? A few games of Diner Dash would even do the trick. lol! I'm not certain but it really appears as if the kitchen makes every single order in order or something. No multitasking in that kitchen. Gordon Ramsay would have a hayday here. Anyway, the waitstaff shouldn't promise things that they can't get the chefs to deliver, and the chefs need to get a grip. They did comp my salad for free (never did get that side of Frank's btw), but I won't support places who blame the customers when they screw up. It was nice of them to "apolgize" for the wait with the free salad, but I still won't be back next time I'm in town. They totally avoided our table once I finally got my salad. Some more positive criticism (besides getting an attitude adjustments on the staff) is that I'd encourage investing in a better line/waitlist system. It's not clear at all where to go when you walk in or how to get on a list or if you just need to seat yourself. read more

When we passed through Cloudcroft, we saw so many dining options and small village shops and just had to stop. Our AirBNB guide recommended Dave's Cafe so we decided to eat local and try it out. We were not disappointed. They were super polite from the moment we came in and very accommodating of food allergies. The atmosphere is really rustic and fun and the food was delicious. They had something for everyone and even our pickiest kid was in love with their waffles. To start, it is very unclear where to enter the restaurant, whether you seat yourself, and where/how to pay. I ordered a sandwich that the menu described as having cheese, mushrooms, and bacon. Nowhere did it say meat patty, and yet it arrived with one, after we had waited for our food for over thirty minutes. The waiter agreed that the menu was unclear and the chef suggested that I should have asked for it without a patty - even though I didn't know it would come with one! My sister ordered nachos and the chips were so stale I truly couldn't believe it. Don't get me started on the toppings. My sandwich (the second time) was alright but incredibly greasy. The only reason I can give it a single star is that one of the three waitresses was kind and took my meal off the bill. read more

I had the Buffalo chicken sandwich which was huge with the seasoned fries. My meal was excellent and I was unable to finish it. Although Very popular hang out especially since the bar with wine and beer available has been put in and busy during tourist season, the food has taken a downward turn. It is often overcooked, dried out and sometimes served cold. My friend ordered a Coney Burger and had to to ask for the tomato and lettuce that is supposed to be on the hamburger. Another friend had to ask for salad dressing for the salad that she had ordered. The other friend was supposed to get kettle chips with her burger but they were absent. We were in the area visiting with some friends and wanted something quick and tasty. Our friends suggested this place because they had just re-opened (apparently there was a fire and it was closed and recently re-opened). They also had a vegetarian menu which was perfect for the vegetarians in our party. Keep in mind, the main reason we stopped here to eat was because we were with some vegetarians and the establishment claimed to have vegetarian selections. Turns out, the "veggie burger" was really just veggies and a bun. Not really a veggie burger. In fact, there wasn't much at all for a vegetarian to eat. Granted, they have special needs, but if you are going to have a whole vegetarian listing, you should at least offer something that appeals to people with those needs. We were fence sitting whether we should stay or go but there were curly fries on the menu, which is the reason E wanted to stay, but turns out, they didn't actually have any. Not sure if it was just today or if they ever have them, either way was still a bummer. Instead of curly fries, we were told we could have "seasoned" fries. I think this was special code for "soggy". Finally, when we got our food, 2 of the 5 orders weren't quite right. We were too hungry at this point to send them back and so we just ate what we got. It was amusing watching the waitstaff wander around trying to figure which food in their hands went to which table (we saw it happen twice). The service was slow for the entire time we were there to the point we had to get up and find someone to pay the bill. To top it all off, I ended up with an upset stomach afterwards. Great little cafe with a simple sandwich and burger menu. We were only in the area for a few days camping and tried it on the way in and liked it so much we waited for them to open the morning we were headed out. You must try the Lynda sandwich. It has a very special ingredient (I'll let you find out on your own what it is). I tried it the first day then brough my whole camp team back on the way out so a bunch of other folks could try it. They have the best burgers in the Cloudcroft Alamogordo area! Hands down! I'm a huge burger guy for most of the places I eat out at, I end up getting a juicy burger. But here their burgers are so good. I don't know what they do to season the burger or what the burger meat is made of but it's so delicious!! My husband had the philly sandwich, my girls had a hot dog and a chicken strip dinner- they all said it was good. I had the Charlie Salad, I liked it, except there's added ingredients that weren't mentioned on the menu such as dried cranberries; which is ok, except as a Type 1 Diabetic, I wasn't expecting them and didn't count them for my insulin intake- but no harm done. All in all, lunch was ok. If I ever do stop again to eat in Cloudcroft, which is rare, I'll probably find elsewhere. read more

Okay, Cloudcroft is a cute little town we visit sometimes throughout the year and typically eat there as well. This time we visited Dave's Cafe...rebuilt after the fire they had in the town quite some time ago. Can we go back in time and decide to eat somewhere else instead? Step inside and wait...and wait...and wait for the waitress while she flirts with someone and you just sit there. Don't dare send you daughter over to ask if we need to get our own menu (we hadn't eaten here before and were not sure of the way things are done...do we get our own menu?). If you do dare to send her over the waitress may say the same thing to yours as she did ours, "I know, I was coming over," in a bit of a nasty tone I might add. I should have told her to take her time...I don't want to be a humbug around the holidays when someone is trying to meet their true love, especially with Valentine's Day right around the corner. On we go... First tip, go with your thirst already quenched because you won't get a refill here. What's the point of a waiter if they don't refill your drinks? I'd rather keep the tip myself and walk the plates of food to my table and get my own refills. I had two kids with me and one had burnt chicken nuggets with a side of fries which my daughter said were "disgusting" because they decided to take a swim today in a puddle of grease. Now, my son had a plain cheeseburger with fries and a drink. They don't have a burger kids meal so he was charged the full adult burger price and the price of a adult drink. The youngest one in the group had the most expensive meal. I could understand paying full price for the burger but c'mon...give him the kids meal drink, he's six! The one, and I mean one, positive aspect about the meal were that the burgers weren't too bad as far as taste. Did I fail to mention the kids chicken nugget meal had way more fries than the adult meals? Something is off balance. The saga continues and those with an appetite for the sexier side of life may enjoy this. With your stop at Dave's you get to see their cook wear a t-shirt, with a perfectly placed hole located on the bottom middle of his back that...wait for it...reveals a glorious butt crack! Food and a show for the low, low price of $26 (tip not included). Hope he didn't have an itch while he was cooking our food! Take your $26, drive back down the mountain and go to Alamo Grill - much better food (avocado burger is awesome), better prices with your standard service. The downfall...no peep show. First time "attempting" to eat at Dave's cafe. The menu looked very good. We had a rather large group with 6 adults and 2 kids. We waited in line to be seated which was no problem, we were in no rush. After being seated our group was split into two separate tables, which again was perfectly fine with us. After waiting patiently we started noticing the waiter and waitress taking orders for groups who came in after us. No problem, but we sure expected our drink order to be taken soon after that. This did not happen. I asked the waiter if we could order drinks, and he told me that the other waitress would be with us soon. She never came to us. I once again had to ask to order drinks. After asking the waitress if we could order drinks, she proceeded to turn around and throw her note pad on the bar, turn back to us and demand ID's. After checking our ID's, She then just stared at us. Her demeanor was extremely rude. After having our drinks we decided not to continue eating there, due to the poor service. Once I asked the waitress for our check, she stormed away and started slamming barstools into the bar. Similar to a child throwing a fit. If I could give this establishment a negative rating, I would. It was an absolute joke. The owners should take a hard look at the staff that's working for them. They clearly have no business in customer service. I also have never even considered writing a yelp review, this is my first. But this place was so bad, I had to. Will never be back.
