So I was hanging out with a friend who recommended this spot as an awesome little hole-in-the-wall sandwich place. We walked in late afternoon after finding metered street parking. My first impression was that this was my kind of place - color on the walls, kind of quirky, independently owned, etc. But I am EXTREMELY picky about my sandwiches so, as always, I was nervous to try the food. I was eyeing the meatball sub and with Dave's encouragement I got it with onions and a small side of their special spicy sauce. It was actually pretty good! It was supposed to be 6 inches but it definitely looked closer to 9. There were at least 4 huge meatballs tucked within, covered (but not smothered) in a tasty marinara sauce with both mozzarella and parmesean cheeses. The roll was good. The onions didn't really add much for me, but they didn't detract either. Gave it a little crunch. I liked the spicy sauce, too, but again, the sandwich was good enough on it's own that I didn't need it. The only thing is it was on the more expensive side for a sandwich (I want to say $6). Best French dip in town. Bread is fresh, soft on the inside while the outside has enough body to keep it together. Especially if you go all in on the side of house made au jus. No bs by the can. For a sec I contemplated getting a 3rd side to sip on like a beef consommé. Then realized that would be excessive. Back to the sando! The meat is ultra tender and top-quality. Perfect ratio of ingredients used. Went with making it a melt and they use a soft creamy mozzarella that infuses this dip with just a lil something extra. They also have a semi-spicy house sauce on the tables that I would put on almost anything. Will definitely be back to explore more of this menu. Terrific guy, Dave is, his Blueberry Banana smoothie was phenomenal and the hummus and tomato on rosemary bread was a shockingly awesome sandwich! The place is funky enough to overcome its oveall lack of ambiance but really it's a feel-good place tucked away in Eagle Rock with fresh, good-for-you, killer food at an affordable price. I'm a regular. Dave's sandwiches are legendary, which is why he's got a serious following. The French Dip is unbelievable. I dare anyone to try and eat it just once. The horseradish gives a great kick. The au jus is a bit of all right. If you'd like them to make you a custom sandwich, they're very innovative. Dave, the owner, an outgoing happy-go-lucky lad from Boston, has a special way of connecting with each customer. His manager Ghazal also makes an earnest effort. Their conversational skills are sharp, and they both love to laugh. Bruno and Anthony, their other two employees, have been trained to create Dave-like sandwiches for the days Dave's off. Yeah, that's right. 5 stars Personally, I LOVE the fact that they take ONLY CASH. I'm not all for the current banking system. And one time, Dave (or someone in there) told my husband they'd rather save us the extra $ they'd charge us if they took Debit/Credit Cards. I've worked for a merchant service provider and totally know what this person was talking about. It's a common thing for businesses to over charge you simply because they take your Debit/Credit cards. They have to offset their fees somehow! Anyway, the food. Dear god, you HAVE to try Dave's Tuna Melt with the House JalapeNo sauce. Absolutely delicious. I almost usually get the Tuna Melt because I love tuna so much, but the last time I was at Dave's I tried his Meatball Sandwich and my-oh-my. I don't normally like meatballs or eat red meat for any matter, but this time I gave it a try. WOW! The sauce. My gosh. The sauce. The meatballs were savory enough and the sauce was totally not necessary, but the sauce itself was delicious enough to give the meatballs an even bigger bang! I haven't really explored the menu much, but after the Meatball Sandwich, I plan on trying something new next time. Service, well, service is very friendly. I haven't really dealt with anyone else, thus far, and have been lucky enough to be helped by Dave himself. He's super friendly and quite the chatter box (which in my opinion, is pretty cool)! I always take my 2 year old with me and Dave usually makes something special for my son and that's always bound to earn you brownie points with a mom. There's also a few toys for my son to play with while I eat comfortable. Lastly, the cherry on top, in a recent article on Patch.com, an owner from a neighboring business complained via blog about Food Trucks and the "mess they caused and business they took from businesses nearby." Well, unlike the author, Dave was quoted saying something along the lines of "I don't mind the (shaved ice) truck parking in front of my shop because their customers can very well come into my place for a sandwich and my customers can purchase dessert from them. In essence, we're helping each other out." And it's because of business owners like Dave that I value their products/services and feel 100% satisfied doing business with them. Pretty much anything you order here is going to be good because of the quality ingredients and care in which they make their sandwiches. I'm not a big fan of sandwiches (I know, *what?*), but I make exception for Dave's. Had the grilled Surf & Turf (tuna melt with pastrami) for lunch yesterday and it was sooo good. My buddy had the Davewich, which he swears is one of the best sandwiches ever. The berry smoothie was yum too. And the staff was awesome, even when I became a bit high maintenance. I was being annoying, asking for extra sauce, extra napkins, and even for something to balance out the wobbly table I was sitting at outside. It was clearly beyond their usual customer request, and they were still cool. It's quite a trek for me to come out to Eagle Rock, but Dave's is worth it! read more

I'll be back to rate again and hopefully my rating goes up. I can see why people like this place. The sandwich I had, The Hodgepodge, was different then any other sandwich I have had. It was recommended by Dave himself. I suspect many of their sandwiches have a slightly different flair. The Hodgepodge was a meatball w/ roast beef and pastrami. I think the description read meatball wrapped in roast beef and pastrami, but the meatballs were not wrapped. This was a slight disappointment. The meatballs and marinara could have had better flavor, but they were okay. I like spicy food, but Dave's hot sauce (not sure if it's the brand Dave's Insanity Sauce) kind of muffled the flavor of the rest of the sandwich. I don't know if they offer different cheeses, but I believe a spicy pepper jack cheese would have complimented the flavors better than Dave's hot sauce. I walked in here starving, having not eaten anything by 12:30 PM and expected that anything I ate I would love. That wasn't the case; I liked what I ate. read more

Went here with a friend. Street parking only (meter or by adjacent streets). It's a pretty janky place, not gonna lie. It's not the prettiest place inside. Just tables and chairs, nothing special. My friend and I ordered the surf and turf & rosemary turkey to share. Surf and turf is tuna melt plus pastrami. Oh man, it sounds weird but it is damn tasty. The ratio of tuna melt to pastrami is very well done, neither of the two overpowers each other. The rosemary turkey sandwich's bread is, pretty damn amazing. The smell & taste of the bread is freaking phenomenal. The inside of the both sandwiches are jam packed with accouterments of what makes good sammies. The dude that made our sandwiches was coo. Major props to Dave's Chillin and Grillin. As a longtime Eagle Rock resident, it's halfway absurd that I haven't been frequenting this establishment sooner. My personal jam is the tuna melt on sourdough with extra pepper spread. I can further vouch for the "Hott Hippy" sandwich. The potato chip selection is great too. On several occasions I've seen the restaurant's namesake/owner Dave on the sandwich grill, which makes me feel even better about supporting a quality independent business. Stopped in today for lunch for the first time. Friendly greeting from the counter guy, a Bostonian (Boston Strong!). I got the Daily Special: Pulled pork, spice slaw, on a baguette. Meat was tender, well seasoned and moist. Slaw was crispy fresh and not saturdated in mayo, which I really appreciate. I doused the sandwich in their signature Dave's Hotts, a spicy vinegar-based dressing that added a smoky kick to their BBQ sauce. $10 for the 'wich, a bag of chips, and a 12 oz Coke. A bit more than other comparable shops/delis, but worth every penny. A great place to stop by for a spontaneous lunch break in a busy area of Eagle Rock near Oxy. read more

Dave's is a gem. A friendly, fresh, local ingredients kind of sandwich shop that is not pretentious or pompous. It's named for its owner - Dave - a heavy accented Bostonian transplant to SoCal who loves life, the Red Sox and making damn good sandwiches. Dave's tuna melt is epic. I mean that. It is epic. I said it twice it's so good. I haven't tried everything there but what I like about Dave's is that if you walk in and tell him what you're in the mood for, he'll whip up something just for you to your liking. Dave always has specials so ask him about them. His pulled pork is on par with his tuna melt. That's right. WICKED EPIC! Also, ask him when he starts making his seafood/clam chowdah! First, the bad news. Dave's can be slow, especially when there is a large crowd (every day at lunchtime). That is the only even nominally bad thing going on at this great place. Dave the proprietor has a very charming Boston accent and will tell you all the ingredients in your Tunah Melt and why they are so good. The Tuna Melt is possibly the best I've ever had because Dave seasons it with a spice that I can't quite identify but man is it good. I've been going here for quite a while now. It's the only local neighborhood sandwich joint to go to. I usually get the meatball sandwich but sometimes I get the meatball and sausage combo sandwich. The meatballs are great and there is some kind of spice in there that is just enough to let you know it's there without being overpowering. They've never disappointed me and I'm always satisfied after leaving. I forget what the prices are like but they're not over-anything. Gosh I love Dave's. They make some of the best sandwiches in town. They care about the ingredients, and their is love in every sandwich. Today I had the Davewich with turkey and roast beef. They put some horseradish mayo on it with some pepperchinis, so delicious. There is some other stuff too, lettuce, I think oil and vinegar, and it all comes together to make a perfect combo. I usually get the large sandwich, but if you have a smaller appetite then a smaller sandwich should suffice. They have a nice selection of gourmet potato chips and cookies, that nicely compliment the sandwich. The price is a little higher than if you go to Subway, but the quality and taste are far worth and superior. For a big sandwich, chips, and a drink, I spent $12.25. Not too bad in my opinion. Dave himself works the stores most days, and has a great story of wanting to bring a great sandwich shop out to LA like he had experienced back East. I just tried ordering from Postmates but an hour later it got canceled saying the location was closed. When you walk in around lunch time the entire place is empty, there is a dirty looking guy slouched over on the chair to your left behind the register playing with his phone. The lady making the sandwich is on the right, looking dirty with her stained clothes and careless demeanor. You regret walking in and you want to run back out. The problem is that I already had placed an order on yelp and paid for a seafood sandwich. What I got instead was a mediocre, supermarket quality pastrami sandwich. The girl told me that they're out of ingredients for the sandwich that I ordered and that yelp/grubhub shouldn't have taken my order. She was obviously lying because she forgot to turn off the ordering feature. I took the lame pastrami sandwich instead and grabbed a drink on the way out, asked her if I need to pay anything extra for the drink, she said no. I think thr owner is careless and so are the employees. read more
