Easily the best sandwiches in the area. I've had maybe 6 different sandwiches here and I love every single one. The price is reasonable, considering the quality AND the quantity. The workers here are also very friendly and accommodating. While I love all the sandwiches, my favorite is the pulled pork on Wednesdays. I used to come in every Wednesday for a few weeks straight. What's makes this pulled pork special is the cole slaw. Absolutely, mind blowing. I've come here with a few friends and they all absolutely loved it. OH. MY. GOD. The best. I am from Boston and I grew up eating subs. It is my comfort food. Sadly, the thing you can find on every corner at home never made it to the rest of the world. Sure, there's Subway, and that's fine, but it's just absolutely not the same thing. Sometimes I make it over to the west side for some Bay Cities (amazing), but that's kinda out of the way. I'm new to the area and just wanted something quick and yummy. Parking is super easy in the back and you can enter through the back door, too. I asked the worker what was good and he described in super scrumptious detail of his favorite sandwich - Genoa Salami and Mozzarella. Sold! And oh my goodness, the sandwich lived up to his descriptions. I only finished half of the sandwich and had the rest wrapped up for later. In the 7 years that Dave's has been here, I've been here twice. The first time was when they first opened and it was just a juice bar/smoothie place. The second time was recently when Peter from Eagle Rock Dog and Cat told me about how good their sandwiches were. I didn't even realize that throughout the years that they were a sandwich shop. I always thought they were just smoothies in which my smoothie fixes went to Jamba juice. The food: I bought the Hodge Podge which was ('scuse the language) f'ing delicious. The girlfriend got the Surf and turf sandwich was was just as f'ing delicious too. The only downside I can complain about is the length of time it takes to get your order. Good food is worth waiting for and this is definitely worth waiting for, but if you're looking to grab lunch and time matters, call in your order cause you won't be able to grab a fast bite here. The staff: The staff was really friendly and non rushing. A little intimidating when 3 people are looking at you while you're staring at the menu above. hahaha. None-the-less they were alright! I don't think any one of them were Dave. Facility: I love how it just looks and feels like someone's home... just with extra tables and chairs. There are tables and chairs to eat at that were clean. Then you look further from the tables and there's a sofa, a table to put your food on with a big flat screen tv. There's drawers and shelves with board games and magazines all designed like someone's messy living room if you want to eat and lounge at. At the back of the shop, there were a bunch of PA speakers that looks like they have events here from time to time ( I've never checked if they have special events or anything). Their artwork is crazy nice. Love the decor and ambiance of this place. Would I recommend this place? Of course I would. I'm not really someone that's crazy for sandwiches when I'm thinking about what to eat. I usually see sandwiches as something I can just make myself at home... If I'm gonna look for something to eat outside of home... it's gonna be something I'm too lazy to make or something I don't know how to make... pizza, burritos, Mediterranean, sushi, etc... Dave is a real character. Visiting was not just a lunch - it was an experience that took me back to Boston (where Dave is from). I found this highly entertaining. He'll basically share his life story with you as you wait. The seating area could have been a little tidier - they aren't too concerned with aesthetics there. However, the sandwiches were WICKED good. We both got the Rosemary turkey sandwich (first one on the menu) which evidently is their bestseller by far. I was worried I might be underwhelmed by a sandwich that cost $10 but it was worth every penny. Try some of the homemade hot sauce on the table too, if that's your thing. It's very good, very spicy! Supporting this place means you are truly supporting neighborhood businesses that are being driven out by stupid Paneras and Chipotles. Came here after reading many reviews and hearing many recommendations. Once you walk in, you feel a weird presents that they want you there...It might just be the couch and TV. Dave is really nice and can help you with anything. Okay so the subs are a bit expensive(like $6-7 for a 6" or $9 for a 10"), but are totally wroth the price. This afternoon, Dave's was HIGHLY recommended to me by a new acquaintance and my girlfriend and I decided to check it out. While reading the menu outside, a woman walked up to the door and told us "Yes, you want to eat here." With two swimming recommendations, we excitedly went inside. The first thing we saw was Dave himself informing the lady that preceded us of what sounded like the most delicious pulled pork sandwich ever described. When I got to the counter, I told him I was sold, and ordered it. While he was taking our order he described the sandwich: the pork is cooked in apple cider and maker's mark bourbon and a dash of tapatio. My ears were drooling, it sounded so good. It didn't disappoint. The "small" sandwich was about 7" long, and had spicy coleslaw along with the BBQ pulled pork inside a bun of perfect consistency, texture, and taste. I devoured the whole thing and will return to sample his meatball sandwich, and everything else on the menu. Dave himself was a character and it's worth it to go just to meet him. He was so excited and friendly and seemed genuinely happy to be there, making superb sandwiches. Oh yeah, at the register we picked up a root beer float cookie made by the the guy behind "freshly-baked.com," which makes "cookies with attitude." Not like a sub shop where you get a mediocre sandwich, these are like the great subs or sandwiches your family makes at home with all the fixings, good quality ingredients, and GREAT bread. Dave's is my favorite sandwich shop. I don't live that close but I've been going for years. He's a great New England guy who exudes character, rock and roll and art both as a person and as a craftsman. I used to always get the spicy tuna melt because it's the best one I've ever had by a long shot, as it's slathered with Dave's signature Peppa Spread (which he now offers as a condiment). But after about 5 trips Dave persuaded me to try another sandwich and since then I've come to see the light. Every sandwich he makes is superior, whether it be the Rosemary's Turkey or the meatball or one of his stellar cold subs. I haven't tried the smoothies because that's not my thing, but I wouldn't bet against Dave. Thanks for the sandwiches. Will come again soon. read more

I have been going to Dave's since it opened, but unfortunately I won't be going there again. We ordered 2 sandwiches and it took almost 40 minutes for them to arrive and there was no one in front of us at the counter when we ordered. For a place that specializes in sandwiches, this is a long time - they should do better. A below review states "the decor is like someone's dorm room" is right on, just take a look in the back of the dining room. If you have 40 minutes to wait for a sandwich you might try it, otherwise head to Mario's in Glendale for a better sandwich and they have their act together. read more

This is an excellent place for a sandwich. I've tried a few of them so far and it is now difficult for me to eat anything other than the meatball sandwich. It is divine. Now the meatball is not my typical sandwich, but Dave himself recommend that I try it one day so I did and I was hooked. It's probably the only place I will consistently order a meatball sandwich. Let's not forget the Chillin' part. They make a decent smoothie, so if you're in the mood pick one up. The restaurant itself is not anything special to look at. A counter, some table and a chalkboard menu, but it's clean and uncluttered. Really how much more do you expect from a sandwich joint. I found the staff to be incredibly friendly. The first time I went I was unaware that this is a CASH ONLY place. The cashier told me that it was okay for me to eat my sandwich and pay them after I got a chance to go to the bank. I was amazed that this sort of thing still happened. My bank is actually within walking distance from Dave's so I got cash while they made my sandwich, but still. Dave is a nice guy too. when he's there he is more than happy to make a suggestion on the menu. I have not found a better sandwich in this area. Sure given the choice between Dave's and Bay Cites, I'd choose Bay Cities. However if given the choice between Dave's and driving to Santa Monica to wait in a long line at Bay Cities I'd easily choose Dave's. read more

The sample of a meatball sub available at this year's Extravaganza for the Senses made my eyes widen with wonder. For a moment, I felt transported back to NY, thinking of simpler times with white bread subrolls, homemade meatballs, and doctored-up Ragu. Then, I realized that, although a 5-star memory, it was based on only mediocre flavor. I still hold it dear to my heart, but would advise those without the memory to know that, although as good as any hot sub (or "wedge" as some used to call 'em) any middle-income neighborhood pizza shop in NY could make, it wasn't something to beckon the loyalties of more gourmet palates and whitewashed neurons. Big downgrade since my January visit. Decided to go early to beat the crowd. Saturday lunch time 30-45 min wait for a sandwich is not my idea of fun. Got there around 11:20 and all the closed signs are still up. Ordered my usual meatball & sausage special. First, they said 30 min then was told it'd be 5-10 min. Why the sudden change? They served OVERNIGHT sausage. Lack of taste, brown color, dry. Baguette was not warm. G wasn't there so I assume she doesn't work there anymore. She was the sign and icon of customer service. Now, they got Dave who thinks people will wait all day for quality food. One employee wore his pants so low that I was grossed out to even stay to eat. Want to stop by for dinner? They don't have a grill but the 'chillin-n-grillin' is all about the attitude; Dave and his crew are laid back but they care about their sandwiches. Best ingredients and meat available; their black forest ham and cheese with all the fixins really hits the spot and I rarely order ham at a deli. On Tuesdays (and one other day, Mon. or Weds.) they have a wicked pulled-pork sandwich but if you don't order before one-ish they might run out. I would highly recommend this place to people however the only downside is that if you don't order ahead, then you'll have to wait forever to get your food. Too difficult to order a sandwich here. I asked how much their sandwiches are, as the menu doesn't list any prices. The woman helping said they range from $9-$15. Great - happy to pay anywhere in that range. I asked how do I know which sandwich is which price? She said, "you tell me which one you want, and I'll tell you how much it is." Why is it so difficult to get this information? I want to know what each one costs, so I can make my best decision, and so I also know for future visits, but I literally would have had to ask about each one individually. My first time coming here I ordered a regular cold ham and turkey sandwich which wasn't bad, so we will say second time's a charm! Popped in to Dave's before checking out a show in the neighborhood. I was drawn in by the chalkboard sign on the sidewalk that read, "Wicked Good Sandwiches!" as I'm from the Boston area. (Only true Mass residents use it correctly.) Both Dave and his right-hand lady were super nice, very accommodating, and very entertaining. They sat and chatted with my friend and me as we ate. I got a standard 6-inch turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and cheese and it was right on the money. My friend got one of the vegetarian sandwiches. She loved it. We were both satisfied with the 6-inch size...they were plenty big. This place is legit. I rarely get up to Eagle Rock, but next time I go, I'm hitting Dave's up again for sure. read more

Not sure whether you want to try the meatball or pastrami? Try the HODGE PODGE. I wish I had taken a picture because just describing it does not do it justice. Meatballs are covered in roast beef and surrounded by slices of pastrami with tomato sauce and onions. This sandwich will open up your sinuses for SURE!
