Um, honestly this place smells, looks like it needs to be redone, and if you want a sandwich in 10minutes, better go somewhere else. The food is decent, but really i believe its just OVER hyped, i wouldn't drive the extra 2 minutes if a subway was next to me. Yum...eating at Dave's is like having lunch at a friend's house. We see Dave every time we stop by. Although there is a set menu, we order items according to what Dave has that is fresh and yummy. Wasted my time and gas on a Saturday driving here to redeem my Groupon. They wouldn't accept it even though it does not say in the fine print it is not valid on Saturdays. Maria G. you are wrong when you slam other Groupon users for not reading the fine print. We did read the fine print and this simply is not there, because it was only added later on after the complaints started rolling in. The first time I tried this place, I didn't realize it was cash only. There were no big signs or anything to point it out. I ordered two sandwiches and went to pay and was told I couldn't. Dave let me leave with the sandwiches and based off the honesty program, said to just come back and pay whenever I could. I thought that was unbelievably sweet! So later that day I came and paid for my order. The sandwiches were great btw. I hadn't returned to this place in years. I always here many great things about it and how sweet Dave is, but for some reason (none of which is the fault of the place) I just never find myself going back. Fast forward a few years, the place is bigger but my visit was just ok. The place looked kinda dirty and I order smoothies and wasn't impressed. The sandwiches weren't all that great either. the sandwiches here are hearty and delicious. i've had their meatball, hummus & tomato & grilled cheese, plain grilled cheese, and stopped by for their philly cheesesteak on Fridays when they're grilling out the back for the farmer's market. all the sandwiches i've had here have done me right. the meatball is perfect for rainy, chilly days. i tend to go for the hummus, tomato & grilled cheese most of the time. it's a go-to when i'm working and getting hungry. they grill the sandwiches right in front of you. it's fun to watch the staff as your order is being made. the bread is really, really good. it's substantial, soft and tasty. the sandwiches get loaded up too. all in all, this makes for one satisfying lunch and it makes me grateful that dave's chillin'-n-grillin' exists. even the staff being in a little bit of a sour mood doesn't put me off. i like coming back here. it's a down-to-earth, cozy, no-nonsense sandwich grill. there's a lounging area with a couch and a tv that reminds me of when i kicked it in my friends' garages. i think that that is what makes this place slightly magical. eagle rock needs more places like this and eagle rock definitely needs dave. read more

all you have to know is that this place is hands down one of the best sandwich spots anywhere in LA. Dave himself is a great dude who really enjoys what he does. My favorite is the Tuna Melt, but whatever special they have for the day is always great. Wow, very impressed with this place. After living in LA for nearly 2 years, I still hadn't found a local sandwich shop that has truly good, filling and satisfying sandwiches with good, high quality ingredients. Problem solved. My girlfriend and I showed up on a Sunday, and they had run out of ingredients (they get everything fresh daily, so when it's gone, it's gone). Rather than have us walk away sando-less, Dave whipped up a couple of creative combinations from his remaining stock, and they were awesome! Dave, you've earned a customer for life. Amazing as always. It has taken 4 years to finally get my boyfriend over to Dave's Chillin and Grilling. What can I say, we aren't nearby. It was worth the wait. The look on his face when he saw his sandwich and then when he took his first bite were pure bliss. This place knows how to make sandwiches, each one crafted to perfection with individual care. The hot sandwich bread is always toasted to perfection, every bite as tender and crisp as the last. The meats used are above bar, even my work lunches at medocinos aren't nearly half as tasty. This trip I splurged and got a shake. I only allowed myself one knowing I was splitting it. Yes, even the shake was better than any I'd had before (even beeps) . It was the perfect consistency, no problem sucking it from the cup straight off. You know the texture I mean? The texture that normally you have to hold your shake and stir for a while to have the warmth from your hand achieve, his are like that when you pick them up. Last time I stopped by Dave took my sandwich order (got a Hodge podge, stellar as always) and then gave me a smoothie while I was standing there talking to him. Love this place! Back when I lived further east, I would go every chance I got. Now, it's a rare treat. I can't say enough warm and wonderful things about this little joint. The food is hearty and tasty - I love the meatball sandwich. There's actually something secret about the sauce! Its a down to earth place where 'everybody knows your name' and your regular order- especially Dave, the owner. The only down fall some might find is that it doesnt always move like fast food. While they do hustle their butts, it takes a bit longer likely because everything is made fresh to order and because the folks that work there actually engage the customers! Arrived at Daves at about 11:45 and there was no line ( a good thing). Placed an order for 2 sandwiches and a shake and Dave said it would take 10 minutes. Sandwiches were standard fare so I give 3* for the food. What was mystifying was that they took 35 minutes to prepare. There were about 6 people in the restaurant and 8 more arrived while we were waiting for our food. Pretty slow for a lunchtime place, but still took 35 minutes to make 2 sandwiches. One star for service --- that equates to 2* for an overall. If there's line when you get there, I'd strongly suggest going across the street to the Oinkster (better pastrami too). read more

The only sandwich I didn't care for, was the Hippie. And even that was pretty good. I've been pleased with every order I have ever made (I didn't order the Hippie, just tried it). Quality is excellent. And Dave is a super cool dude. I don't know him at all, but the two times I've had any interaction with the guy, he is friendly and outgoing.
