Let me preface my discussion of the food by talking about the man himself, Dave. In my entire life, I have never felt so welcome inside a restaurant as I did at Dave's. He is extremely friendly and an amazing host. I ordered the surf and turf. It was phenomenal. Pastrami and tuna salad might not sound like they go together but they do indeed. I was looking up sandwich places to try to go to during my lunch break and saw the reviews for here. I noticed a lot of people talk about the rosemary turkey sandwich so decided to come try it for myself. Parking was easy to find which was good. Wait time wasn't that great but the food made up for it. They clearly take their time to make make a good sandwich. They have this amazing spicy sandwich spread, ended up buying a jar to go. Update: I came back for lunch two days ago. I had given this place 5 stars but now I'm at 4 with this place unfortunately because this time the customer service was terrible. I began my order and the woman at the cash register answers her phone in the middle if me giving her my order so I awkwardly stopped. She didn't even say sorry for that so i continued my order. I said it would be two seperate orders when she asked my bf what he wanted and she rudely was like "I'm still going to write in on the same paper". Woah sorry for letting you know. We only saw Dr. Pepper in the fridge so my bf asked if they had other drinks in the back maybe and she was like "no that's it but you can bring something from the outside if you want". All this time she's just giving off attitude and being rude. Finished ordering and we're both like wow that was something. Probably won't be eating there anymore and just taking it to go. read more

Best Tuna sandwich I've ever had! And as big as those at the Carnegie Deli, at a much better price. All the sandwiches at Dave's are great. His new digs on Figueroa are bright and airy and spotless, and shared with a great local butcher, Chops. A little hard to find since you have to enter on the alley, but don't let that deter you - it's very safe and there is a public parking lot right there. read more

Excellent tuna melt. When I was a kid my pops gave me a spoonful of mayo and told me it tasted like ice cream, giving me a life-long hatred of white dressings. So, the dryer tuna was perfect. Fresh grilled bread. I always love going to small restaurants where I can see the person who gets my money, so meeting Dave was great. He couldn't have been more friendly or proud of his joint. Reasonable prices, too. Definitely going back to try the beef dip that I hear rivals Cole's and Felipe's. read more

Straight up, this place is great. So great, in fact, that I created an entire Yelp account just so I could write Dave the review he deserves. My friends and I were hanging out in Eagle Rock the other night and walked into this little sandwich shop that you wouldn't notice unless you knew it was there. Even though it was well past closing, the owner, Dave, had no problem feeding us. I ordered the Tuna Melt, after Dave's recommendation. You could see him preparing every step of the sandwich from behind the counter, and you could tell he put a lot of effort into every sandwich he makes. My Tuna Melt was outstanding. Probably the best one I've ever had (and believe me, I've had my fair share). The tuna tasted fresh, and the bread was nicely toasted. Plus, Dave used some sort of spicy pepper spread on the bread that I absolutely loved. What really won me over, though, was the environment and the staff. Dave (the owner and chef) was one of the friendliest and most helpful individuals I've ever met in a restaurant. We spoke to him for at least thirty minutes about his sandwiches, where he was from, and what there was to do in Eagle Rock. He also told us a story about how he got mugged and had a gun to his head just down the street from the restaurant. So you know; charming stuff. But anyways, Dave's Chillin'-N-Grillin' is definitely somewhere I plan on going whenever I'm in Eagle Rock. I had a very enjoyable meal, and I thank Dave a lot for being so cool. Keep it up. For me , a good sandwich always starts with good bread. When trying a new place first thing I order is a grilled cheese sandwich.At Dave's you get the BEST SOURDOUGH IN Southern CA.Even better that Boudin's. It is no wonder that this place is sold out several times even before 6 pm, so I highly suggest that those unlucky souls who were turned empty handed, give Dave another try, you won't regret! I'm new to LA, and did a quick inter webs search for "best meatball sandwich" after i had a sudden craving. I found Dave's. I don't know if they're the 'best' in LA. But, they're the best i've ever had (after 22 years in midtown Manhattan/NYC). A few weeks later, i tried the Wednesday Special Pulled Pork sandwich, and mutha-a-gawd -- heaven. THAT is now my favorite. Best sammich i've ever had, period. That Dave is a fellow member of RedSox Nation only makes things just a bit sweeter. About the sandwiches, though: i never eat them 'right out of the paper.' I like to put them in tin foil and bake them a bit. And, they're as good or better the second day. I haven't encountered a problem with them running out of ingredients, but i do wish they had the Pork Sammy EVERY day -- not just once a week.... read more

I've been going here since a good LA Times review came out many years ago, and I still like it. First couple of times, we'd ask questions and Dave would give so many details on how he gets the bread so good and his own twist to make it more like East coast style. And the cheese he explained, you see his is not shinny like the others using cheese made with mostly oils. Great sandwich shop. This is the friendliest sandwich shop on Colorado and also the best tasting and best value for your money. Everytime I go to Dave's I think I know what I want. Then Dave tells us the specials and tells us what he has left. (FYI when he runs out of bread or otherstuff, he runs out. ) This just gives you the oppertunity to try something new or just let Dave surprise you. It is always awesome. My favorites are the Grilled cheese with hummus. so good. The Turkuleese. mmmmmmm on Thursdays it's always the Pilgrim. Thanksgiving in a sandwich. That's all I can say. For my man the Hodge Podge. A sandwich guys dream. This place is great for sharing couples. My man loves the leftovers., As Dave says they are monsta sandwiches. They even have a couch and t.v. to zone on while you enjoy your sandwich bliss. Dave is the mad genius of sandwiches. I'll go ahead and say it - BEST SANDWICH IN LOS ANGELES. There may be other places that are as good as Dave's, but there are none that are better. Daily specials are off the charts: - pulled pork (with a vinegar sauce and coleslaw on top) - hodgpodge (meatballs wrapped in roast beef wrapped in pastrami with marinara sauce. AMAZING!) - The grilled Hot Hippie (vegetarian) - The Pilgrim (Thanksgiving leftovers style sandwich w/ turkey, stuffing, cranberries, gravy...) - meatball and spicy sausage - The sliced beef sandwich on Fridays is not to be missed. (He chills the beef before he grills it so that he can slice it super-duper thin.) And the fresh fruit smoothies are a legit A+. Try the "Everything Nice" smoothie. You cannot go wrong. Dave LOVES making good food - sourcing ingredients, researching recipes and techniques, etc. The french rolls he uses are crusty, chewy, and not "bready" or "doughy." Dave also does a food truck and a pop-up called the Wicked Clam. Keep your eye out for this event. His east coast style seafood is fantastic. Best clam chowder I've ever had. Went there a couple of weeks ago with a co-worker and I had a Groupon. I've been in the Eagle Rock area for over 30 years and didn't know that this place existed until I saw the Groupon e-mail. The interior of the place is very cool and comfortable, but the service was horrific! As we were looking at the menu (deciding on what sandwich to order) 2 employees - one was a short, bit heavyset, dirty blonde guy and the other was a lady, black hair - were watching us waiting to take our order. Once I ordered with the guy and told him I had a $30.00 Groupon the guy acted like a complete jerk and said I needed to pay an additional $4.00+. My order was under $25.00 and I had enough left over on the Groupon. He said you can have an additional cookie and chips. He didn't care to explain what his problem with Groupon was and why he was so irritated. We continued with our order - but were worried that he would spit in our food or shakes - so we kept an eye on him. Soon after I believe the owner showed up (or a 3rd employee) and we didn't say anything to him because our food had not arrived to our table yet. When the sandwiches were done, the same guy that had initially helped us "threw" our plates at us. If this was a different time in my life, I would have handled this situation (and this guy) much differently, but we just fininshed our meal and left. ***I will never go back to this place again and would never recommend it to anyone I know - as long as that employee is still there. read more

Well... Dave's is a joke. Closing hour is supposed to be at 8:00 p.m. Never heard of this joint before until I saw the offer on Groupon and purchased. I have stopped by after work on four (yes four) occasions between 5:30 and 6:15 in the last couple months. All four times, they were closing shop. Why? I was informed they ran out of food. This place has pound-for-pound the best sandwiches in the area. My favorite is the Turkey Rosemary. The big issue I have with this place is their customer service. I work in the area, so I will call in my lunch. 100% of the time when I go pick up my call in order, its not ready. I can deal with that, but the bearded man (my sandwich maker), always gives me attitude. Because of this red bearded man, I no longer come to this store. I want to like them but then they are seemingly meh. Went twice, first time they didn't have turkey for the rosemary turkey so I ended up getting something else that I can't remember. It was ok whatever it was..Gave them a second shot, had the turkey but not the rosemary bread....why can't you have all the ingredients ts for my one sammich?! Three times we've come during their listed open hours, and three times they've decided to not be open. The first time was two hours before they close. The latest was 4 hours before they close. All three times they either decided to close early, or in the most recent case had scheduled a photo shoot during their advertised hours. Two times they've had unprofessional excuses, the other time they didn't even bother making one. We talked with another local and they haven't been able to figure out when Dave's is open either. My advice, don't advertise hours on yelp you can't honor. For hours of operation it should read, "show up, and maybe we'll be open." Not coming back for a fourth try. I suggest walking up the street to Four Cafe or the Italian Bakery, they're much more polite at both spots and not only that, they're open when they advertise they'll be open. Fairly recent visit and was struck by the unhappy woman behind the counter-who ignored us. In the restaurant it appeared that two people were eating and one person was waiting for their order. We were the only people waiting to order. We waited for five minutes, all the while being glanced at by (I guess) the woman who would take our order who was discussing a decidedly personal issue with the guy at the grill--so she didn't have time for us. We left, likely never to try Dave's-- even though it's only a mile away from where we live. read more

The same happened to me today, he was out of baguettes, but still very willing to create an awesome sandwich for me. The thing about fresh ingredients is that you are supposed to run out. The man is passionate about his food, and is friendly in that masshole way pretentious LA people wouldn't understand, but a real LA native will appreciate this. Went this past weekend to pick up my son from Oxy. On the way back to AZ, we decided we didn't want fast food. So, we ordered sandwiches from Dave's for the trip home. My son swore by the great sandwiches. He had the meatballs which he said usually goes pretty fast and always sells out. I ordered the Roast Beef melt. The sandwich was just ok. Bread was toasted ok, but I expected better roast beef. The roast beef was rubbery and cooked all the way through. The tomato was soggy, and there was no taste in the sandwich whatsoever. What really makes me not want to come back to this place was the service and laziness by the staff. Being a sandwich place, I would have thought that the process in making my Roast beef melt wasn't like "rocket science". It took them 40 minutes to make my sandwich, where I was called up 2 times to the counter saying my order was ready... only to be told, nope, someone called in the exact same order as you and it would be ready in 2 mins... 2 mins?! 2 mins turned into another 20 mins. Also, I paid for a water bottle when the first person took my order. As I picked up my sandwich to go, I was told they didn't have any water. Geez... I settled for a luke warm root beer. It's unlikely I'd try this business again. For that amount of time I waited, I could have tried Oinkster across the way. read more

So I've lived in LA for several years now and am proud to say that I've been a regular at Dave's since the beginning. Dave is the evangelist of the sandwich. Dave, Giselle, and crew have, simply put, achieved sandwich perfection. You know what, they're not even really sandwiches - they're something more than sandwiches - we need to invent a new word, an entirely new category of food to describe what it is that these guys put together on a daily basis. I don't even eat sandwiches anyplace else anymore because it just makes me sad. Let me explain: After eating a sandwich at Dave's, eating a sandwich at, say, a subway is like the experience of the man that Plato describes in the seventh book of the Republic. Socrates speaks of the philosopher who has managed to leave the cave and behold reality as it is - to truly perceive the Forms in the light of the sun - and then returns below to the world of dross and decay in an effort to enlighten miserable blind humanity who, of course, cannot understand him. It's like that - just like that. You have a sandwich at Dave's and it's like beholding, suddenly, the Platonic form of SANDWICHNESS in all it's perfection, and you realize that what you thought was a sandwich up until that moment in your life was nothing but sublunar dross. And you are filled with such a love of humanity that you want nothing more than for all humans, regardless of race, creed, or political affiliations to experience a sandwich at Dave's as well, secure in the knowledge that no one who truly possesses a soul could escape enlightenment once they have come to KNOW what a sandwich can be.
