Stopped in here after seeing a special and thought we'd check it out. We were pleasantly surprised with this little gem and found that the place was really busy on a weekday at lunch which seems to be more and more rare these days. The prices seemed reasonable and on par with other places, if not a bit less and the selection was pretty impressive- it was hard to decide what to order! The interior decor is also really nice with the High Desert vibes you would expect from the name. We each had one of the specialty burgers (Valley burger and I forget the name of the other one). They were both very tasty and the portions were generous. They have amazing fries- both the regular and sweet potato. Service was great (it was so busy we had to sit at the bar since we were in a little bit of a hurry). We plan to add this place to our rotation as there is a ton of selection that looks amazing and they have a pretty decent looking happy hour food & drink specials too. I couldn't get a good look at all the taps but that selection also seemed to be pretty impressive compared to what you see elsewhere. I've hadn't been to Dave's before, despite passing by it multiple times. My friend got the bowl of green chile stew, which came with a little green chile cheese biscuit on the side, a skillet cookie, and a beer. I got the biscochito peach cobbler for $12 and didn't realize it was enough to feed a small family. I got the multiple scoops of ice cream on the side (designed in the shape of roses) and the cobbler itself was a flaky puff pastry crust containing sweet peaches and biscochitos arranged like the shingles on a roof. My friends took me for my bday to Dave's, and I do love their shrimp and grits. Not only has eggs on top cooked your way, but the shrimp was plentiful. The kids invited us out for dinner so we obliged and had a great time! Had the fish and chips. Not fresh but they were pretty good. Not great but good. The burgers are where this place shines! And the fries!! Damn those fries are good!!! Had an old fashioned and they make them per good here! Okay another great local spot! Came here to try something new and glad we did. The service was great, everyone was friendly and the food and drinks were all prepared well. We are always searching for breakfast and brunch spots on our vacation and this place was AWESOME when we visited Albuquerque. We had a Sunday Funday brunch here, the mimosas were very refreshing and the food was very filling! We sat outside and the staff was great about opening the umbrellas to shield us from the sun - the inside of the restaurant had beautiful floor to ceiling windows. Our server was really nice, he had a lot of great suggestions and steered us in the right direction. I had the avocado toast - delicious fluffy scrambled eggs on a buttery and crispy slice of toast. My boyfriend and I shared the Whiskey Banana Walnut Pancakes and holy smokes were they delicious. Went to Dave's High Desert Grill with a few family members. Our food arrived warm. The broccoli was beautifully cooked but not hot enough to melt the butter I requested. Chicken Caprese was good but only warm. Forget the mashed potatoes and gravy. The gravy tastes like it came from a jar. The potatoes were gluey and completely tasteless. One person ordered a pasta dish that was greasy because it wasn't hot. Service was adequate but not great. WIll not go to this place again. read more

From the get go of walking into this restaurant and being seated where nobody could see you, to the 20 minute wait to be acknowledged, to the 45 minute wait for our brunch food it was horrible. The prime rib omelet consisted of 6 small pcs of meat in which 85% was fat and the country potatoes were hard. The French toast had to be cut with a knife. Was not good at all. The manager hid out at the end of the bar just chatting with the bartender. This left a bad taste in my mouth for thinking of trying this restaurant again. read more

Take out on Saturday, Jan. 4 11:00. Since it was takeout we had minimal interaction with the wait staff but she was pleasant and friendly. The ambiance is ok, more like a lounge/bar. I've been to Dave's valley grill. The food was so good, so I had high expectations for this restaurant. I was disappointed. I got the ham and asparagus Benedict. My SO got the breakfast burrito with sausage and green chile. The Benedict: 1. The asparagus was nothing but woody stems. I tried one and could barely chew it. Some were the very bottom of the stalk, brown and woody. 2. There was an incredible amount of oil. (See the picture). 3. Everything was bland! Are they cooking for old folks watching their salt intake? 4. One egg was on the verge of medium. I would not order this again. The Sunny Side Up restaurant has a better Benedict. My SO said the burrito was ok. We know what that means; it was edible but that's all. The green chile had a good flavor but why so chincy with it? He had to search for it. The sauage was a link sauage and he said that was OK too. He did not like the potatoes, he said they had an oil flavor he didn't like. He would not order it again. So, given the food did not even come close to expectations, I would not return. Too bad, we liked the valley grill and I was excited because this location is much closer to us. Maybe breakfast isn't their thing but how difficult is it making a good burrito? The Benedict not being good I can understand, it's hit or miss on this meal and it can be moderately good and I will be happy. Two meals (neither we would order again) was over $30 not including tip. Definitely not worth it. Two stars cause the server was great otherwise one star for food. read more

We found Dave's on Yelp passing through Albuquerque on vacation and was so glad we did. The service was great. We got there during happy hour and the bloody mary was perfect. My husband enjoyed the grilled ham and cheese sandwich and onion rings. The portions were perfect. I also enjoyed the chicken salad on a croissant with onion rings. It was also delicious. Party of 5, birthday celebration. I ordered the salmon with red skin mashed potatoes and broccoli. It came with a side salad. The salad came out and there was a strange coating on one of the tomatoes. I removed it and the rest was okay. The test tube of bleu cheese dressing was decent. Then three in the party got their meals and then 7 minutes later, the grits and shrimp came out and another 8 minutes later, the salmon. By the time I started, everyone else was halfway to 3/4 done. The masked potatoes were grossly undercooked and tasted raw. They were smothered in gelatinous beef gravy, which was weird with salmon. I'm a pescatarian. I sent it back and the big burly waiter seemed annoyed that I asked for what was literally on the menu, and proceeded to refill everyone else's drinks, but left mine empty throughout the meal. They did bring me a new portion of plain, undercooked, unappealing potatoes. I'm assuming the unwanted addition of gravy was to mask the actual flavor. The broccoli was almost raw and bland. No salt, no seasoning, just undercooked with black spots on the stems. The salmon was a very wimpy portion that was smothered in an unappetizing fruity sauce that was loaded with hard little seeds. $20 for a nearly inedible plate. I overheard other tables complaining about the eggs Benedict, that the sauce was horrible. The Monte Cristo, ordered by another in my party, was just French toast with a tiny bit of turkey and cheese and thick, dry slices of ham that she had to remove and the onion rings were soggy and the breading fell off in a long flake when she picked it up. I've been twice recently so you know it's got to be good to bring me back for round 2. So far the service has been exceptional on both visits! I like the vibe and it kind of reminds me of an old school bar. For the food we've tried the burger sliders, fish & chips, Mushroom Swiss Burger, Turkey Dinner, and a Pretzel w/cheese. The Burger Sliders were wonderful, and because they were so good I went back for a burger and got the mushroom swiss! Fugg me up the danged burger was just as good as the sliders!!! The beef is seasoned and cooked perfectly, the bun's great and the cheese plentiful! Oh and at happy hour the sliders are discounted, as well as the fish and chips. The fish & chips were solid enough as well. Not the best in the city, but definitely good compared to most fish and chips you'll find in the desert! I'm not huge on most pretzel's but it was good enough to eat....The Turkey dinner unfortunately was terrible and the reason why this is not 5 stars. The Turkey itself was meh, but the rest of the sides were just atrocious. The mashed potatoes were lumpy and not even warm. The Cranberry sauce was some lumpy canned junk, and the stuffing though it seemed like a cool spin and good idea was also horrible as well. Actual:4.5 stars. Not quite sure how I stumbled on Dave's while scrolling through Yelp, but I'm very glad I did. I was caught by the rave reviews of the braised short ribs. My mouth watered immediately. Our family of four decided it would be the dining spot for a birthday dinner. Because of travel needs, we had a late lunch, or early dinner. That put us there during happy hour. The happy hour menu was tempting, and very reasonably priced, but we had our eyes on other meals. Our order included the braised ribs with mashed red potatoes and broccoli, fish tacos with onion rings, rib eye poutine, and a grilled cheese and ham sandwich with fries. While waiting for the order, it was easy to relax and view the regional artwork. Overall it was an appealing experience. As others have reported, the braised beef was fantastic. Cooked to fall apart tenderness it paired well with the red wine brown gravy. The red mashed were ok, and the gravy elevated them. My preference would be for a creamier potato. The broccoli was steamed perfectly but had no seasoning. Oh and it included a field greens salad we shared that had a very tasty ranch dressing. The ribeye poutine looked great as well and it took a serious hit at the meal with the other half boxed and taken home for another meal. The fish tacos also received high marks. They disappeared so quickly I can't give you a description. They were reportedly packed with huge fillets of delicious fish and a very well done pico. The onion rings were panko breaded instead of battered. They were reportedly again ok, but not something any of us would order again. YMMV The ham and cheese was good. I would estimate between 4 and 6 oz of ham slab in that sandwich and lots of melty cheddar on grilled Texas toast. The French fries were also reportedly good. The waitress was personable and service overall was excellent. Because it was a birthday, we were offered a free dessert that sounded wonderful, but declined it since we had cake waiting at home. I was also happy that we enjoyed all of this for under $100, including a 25% tip. Note, paying cash will save you another 3.5%. Why did I drop the 1/2 star? Only because of some of the sides. Will we eat there again? You know it! While I love our New Mexico dishes and restaurants, I enjoyed what to me touched on meals I grew up eating. The Americana vibe of the beef ribs alone puts this on our return list. read more

I'm thinking that Dave hasn't quite gotten into the groove at this location yet. The valley grill is ten stars all the way, so I was super excited to try this east side location. However, it was not nearly the stellar experience I've come to expect from this outfit, even if the ambience was surprisingly chic, more suited to evening patronage than the valley location. The service was quite slow to start off. Our waiter became more attentive as the brunch wore on, but he was delayed in greeting us and taking a drink order. Though there were a number of other staff standing by the bar, no one thought to pitch in a greeting or offer us drinks while we waited. He didn't try terribly hard to accommodate a special order, and also blamed the kitchen with a "they always.." kind of remark when only one dish came out. Not exactly BAD service, but not great either. The food came out a bit tepid as a result of waiting for the other entree, but not cool enough to keep me from eating it. The veggie omelette was uninspired, with overly cooked (IMO) spinach and a very mere pinch of tomato, and such little queso fresco it shouldn't have merited mentioning on the menu. I think it might rely too heavily on the hollandaise, which was quite tasty. The fried potatoes could have been super stars, freshly chopped and perfectly tender as they were with accompanying peppers, had they been served hot (and maybe a little more seasoned). So too would the green chile biscuit, had it not the spongy texture of a refrigerated leftover freshly microwaved. The red chile was excellent. The coffee was good too. The blue corn pancake was awesome. Bottom line: it was a good brunch, but not a Dave's-Valley-Stellar brunch. Definitely worth giving another try though. read more

Went for Sunday brunch. Our server did the best he could he seemed to have tables inside and out and was rushing around like crazy. I have no problems with the service as I could seem him working his butt off. My daughter ordered the shrimp and grits. The grits had a good texture and I have eaten grits all over the south however smothering the top of grits with cheese doesn't make cheesy grits. The shrimp were small and needed seasoning. An ok dish but not spectacular. I ordered the bangers and bible and squeak. Bubble and squeak was good a nice presentation in patties or cakes, sadly there were a little cold and could have been amazing if had been crispy on the outside. The bangers were true English bangers and they made my UK heart happy. What this dish needed was fried egg on top.
