Since it was close by our hotel, we took a walk there for dinner: two chicken restaurants for consecutive meals was probably too much. Pollo Campero is primarily a Central American fried chicken chain, with 350 locations worldwide. It was originally founded in 1971 in Guatamala. They are currently in a rapid expansion in the U.S., with this location being one of a dozen in Florida. The state with the most is California, and I'll have to look out for them when back home. You order and pay up front, just like a fast food restaurant. But the food was delivered on real plates and metal utensils to our table once ready and it came very fast. 4 piece Fried chicken with campero beans and campero rice ($15) - I thought the fried chicken was OK. It did come with a dippable campero sauce, a mayo based sauce with spices. The rice was decent, but wish the beans were a bit different than the standard tasteless pinto beans. Campero sandwich ($7.60) - version of a chicken sandwich. Good brioche bun, and a decently juicy fried chicken breast. Campero Bowl ($12.40) - wasn't very good and ended up being very dry. The grape tomatoes were mushy and not edible, and the greens were limp. The fried chicken on top didn't really add much flavor, and the rice was dry with the pinto beans being the same. I did like the avocado chunk along with the corn salad. Individual empanada ($3.10) - small, very thin crust. The filling was tasty but there wasn't much of it. It has a self serve soda machine with Pepsi products. Since the plates were reusable, assumed that they would bus.

With the $30 groupon, we would owe $2-5 more. No problem. However, they said we owed them about $38 plus tax as they kept insisting we didn't add the additional $2 here and $3 there. We couldn't' communicate well enough, and they ended up getting so frustrated they grabbed the groupon and shoved the food at us and waved their hands to go away. What???????? It was clearly on THEIR website (the menu) - what changed for them? What did we miss? There was a lot of food, but the gyro meat lacked enough seasoning. Based on how we were treated, they need to get a manager or the owner to really look at the website and resolve their issues. I have reviewed 100's of restaurants and have never been so confused about their pricing . I would not return. Maybe it's this location? The store had a rustic decor with shellacked wood tables and an industrial cement flooring and an open rafter ceiling with hanging orange cased led lights from long wires. The food posters on the walls provided a glance of the healthy nutritional value of a gyro - although a heavy meal it was loaded with veggies and meat protein. The bathroom was clean but very basic and in my opinion does not display the originality of the rest of the eatery which would be a simple task.
