If I could give 6 stars, I would. But Yelp has a max of 5. I'm very particular and usually have a good idea of what I want to do going into the salon. But whenever I see Chrys, I leave looking better than I could have imagined! First things first, I have very straight, flat black Asian hair. I've been to stylists who have accidentally made me orange, red and purple. Chrys is not only a rockstar, he's an ARTIST, truly. He listens to what you want and then brainstorms on how to make what you want even better! He has an amazing eye for color and really knows how to work with your skin tone. He's taken my black hair to a beautiful brown with natural looking balyage highlights. I also just had my first cut from him. He's very detail oriented and works with the shape of your face. I've had countless compliments and have referred at least a dozen people to him. I give 5 stars for Chrys because he is attentive and never rushes you out, ever. He takes his time to make YOU beautiful because beauty and art is his PASSION. He can work with any type of hair (my girl friend has curly coarse hair, and he cut and colored it beautifully!) The great thing about Chrys and The David Dru salon is that they only use Aveda products, which is mostly plant derived. The color processing doesn't destroy your hair. I got a deal at work for 4 treatments at the David Dru Salon for $40. It was a great deal. Unfortunately, this deal is catered more for women and I could not participate in 1 of the treatments because it was for coloring. The facial and haircut was great. The facialist seems to be really knowledgeable in the area and worked with me to clean up those messy pores. As for the haircut, it made question why I didn't fork over for a $60 dollar cut more often. Oh yeah...cuz it's $60 dollars! Overall, it was exactly as the stars say...3 for just A-ok! read more

As David saved my hair, giving it gorgeous shape and movement, he was also a delightful conversationalist (sometimes I like to put my nose in a book at the salon, but when I don't, it irks me when the stylist spends the entire time talking with a friend while cutting my hair like I'm a mannequin or a corpse). I was passed on to his colorist, who went the extra mile to ensure my hair was richly colored but not too dark. They use all Aveda product so my hair was wonderfully soft not just upon leaving, but for many days since. Oh, and for a cut by the owner, expert color overseen by him, and a blowout by him, I spent much less than what you'd spend at a salon on Beverly or Rodeo. I have been going to David Dru for years. David is truly an artist with scissors. He has always given me the most fantastic haircuts...they are always better than I had hoped for! He also colors my hair. I get full highlights with 3-4 different colors. He weaves the colors so beautifully and with such skill that when my hair starts to grow out it still look beautiful and natural. I can go 5 months inbetween coloring and it looks great! No joke. David is such a sweetheart. He is funny, friendly and a total doll. You can tell you has a serious loyal following. He knows his clients, all about their lives and cares. I've been at this salon twice now- both times Brad cut my hair and gave me a blowout. I absolutely loved the way he styled it and cut it. He's an awesome person, very warm and friendly. The salon is cute and clean but now they have new management so they will be expanding in the near future. I love the Aveda products they use as well. Such a great Aveda Concept Salon. Sabrina does my hair and certainly does a great job, and even though David has never worked on me personally, he is such a nice guy who clearly knows everything about hair and yet is very humble! So happy I finally found a place walking distance from my house that does amazing work and is a pure joy to go to! They take walk ins if not too busy! However knowing how much they care, I am sure if they can find away to fit you in they will! FYI- Visit the french bakery underneath it for some of the best food, treats and coffee around. I bought a Groupon for David Dru Salon. When I made the appointment with Brad, I told him that I also wanted to color my roots so that it could go with the rest of my hair since my roots are black. The roots have grown out 2 inches and the rest of my hair was brown. So he said ok. The Groupon that I purchased was for partial highlights so I decided to pay more to get full highlights in order to get a nice touch up on the highlights I had before. He said he was going to charge me an extra $100.00 to do full highlights (even though the Groupon I purchased was for partial highlights.) At the salon, he put the highlights in and while he washing it, I asked him if he was going to do my roots. He said no, it's going to look light. So after he blow dried it, I looked in the mirror and I could still see my dark black roots sticking out. I told him that my roots show and he said, "it gives it a good contrast because you have highlights." However, I wasn't happy, because that's not what I wanted. I wanted my roots dyed so it could blend well with the highlights. Later that day, I saw a friend of mine and she asked, "Why didn't the stylist color your roots? It shows and it doesn't look that good!" I told her that I did ask for them to to be dyed but the stylist thought it would give it a good contrast. She couldn't believe that I told him I wanted my roots done and he still didn't do it. After 3 days, I text Brad and told him that I didn't like my black roots showing and that I wanted my roots brown so that they could go with the rest of my hair. He never responded to my text message I waited for a whole day and a half to get a response, but nothing. So the next day in the afternoon I decided to call the salon and speak to him, he said he got my text message but that was it. He never even apologized to me for not responding to my text message. He said he had to ask the owner, David for his opinion. After he spoke with him, he said that I couldn't get my roots done now and that I had to wait 2 to 3 months until more of it is out. He also said that I would have to pay additional for it. I spent a lot of money and I do not recommend going here! I am very dissatisfied with this salon and the stylist! It'd be different if I didn't tell him what I wanted ahead of time. I can't believe I gave him a $10 tip too! read more

It was way time for a cut. I had unfortunately let my hair grow to scary mullet like lengths and decided to cash in a promotional coupon at David Dru Salon. I liked the chill vibe. Simple. No pushy up selling. I like that the salon is not stuffy or pretentious. Tucked away on the second floor of a strip mall off Olympic, one would never know it's there unless you're looking for it. I was greeted by the friendly receptionist and waited no more than a minute for my stylist to come fetch me. I never even got to open up the magazine. I have extremely curly hair that is in-between straight and curly right now (thanks to the Brazilian blowout I got). I needed to get a good shape until the curls fully came back. She asked me what I wanted and was great about listening. She told me what she recommended and we compromised. In the end it was probably the best cut I've gotten in a long time. It was the fastest salon experience I think I've ever had. It included the consultation, wash and condition, cut and style. My hair looks healthier after the cut - she took about 30 minutes. I was in and out in an hour. My stylist was very confident and competent. I already made an appointment to go back. And yes, the peppermint-liquorice tea... is delicious. read more

I knew I was taking a risk by making a drastic change to my hair a day before the biggest night of my career, but thanks to the wonderful and talented Jahra, I was able to go on stage for my film premiere that night feeling like a million bucks. I had gotten subtle oil slick highlights in dark purple, blue, and green at another Aveda salon about six months before, but they tend to fade quickly to a light brown color. This time, I was tempted to go bolder with the colors. I showed Jahra some pictures online, and she was excited to work on a unique look. She brought out all the color options, and suggested adding a dark fuschia to the three colors I had gotten previously to make them pop a little more. Jahra was friendly and thoughtful throughout. After putting the foils in my hair, she even offered to pick up lunch for us from a great French cafe downstairs in the same plaza. I've never had a hair appointment where I got food! I got to eat while I was waiting for the dyes to set. And then the moment of truth. As Jahra was shampooing out the dye, she was thrilled to see the result. Then after blow drying, the colors were glorious! The four colors were layered in a way to give a lot of depth and dimension, helping my fine hair look fuller. Jahra side swept my bangs and added curls on the bottom to give it even more volume. I left loving how my hair looked and felt, and hoped I could maintain the style till the next day. Unfortunately the day of the premiere ended up being quite chaotic, and after lots of running around and lugging heavy boxes in the LA heat, my hair looked messy and sweaty. I called and requested Jahra, luckily, she was able to do the last-minute appointment. This time, I went with my best friend who also wanted a shampoo and style. Jahra once again worked her magic for both of us. She gave some great tips on how to maintain the style through the night, creating pincurls which she advised me to take out right before the event. It worked, and I got a lot of compliments on my hair that night. Jahra is truly an artist who enjoys a challenge. She had never done oil slick highlights before, yet they turned out as a better version of the pictures I showed her online. The other stylists were great too, they all seemed passionate and knowledgeable about their work. My sister, brother-in-law, and best friend were very pleased with their styles as well. Had a great first experience at the David Dru Salon this evening. Came into my appointment tonight which was the last of the evening, and the salon was packed. They were running a few minutes behind, which was no big deal (it was the last appointment of the evening and things just happen sometimes) but they were so nice and apologetic-it was truly appreciated. Sabrina took care of my hair, and was honestly wonderful. She listened intently when I explained what I wanted, asked a few questions... then did exactly what I wanted. No hassle, no fussing... just gave me a great haircut! I have extremely long and thick hair and she gave me some great tips, and (importantly) did not push any product!! I hate feeling like my haircut is a prelude to an extended sales pitch. Sabrina let me know about the products she was using and what they would do for my hair, and left me to my own decisions. Hugely appreciated. The whole experience at the David Dru Salon was great. Everyone was courteous and helpful, and I am thrilled with my cut. Customers since 2001 - my husband gets his very hard to cut (very thick) hair cut here monthly and I get my cut and color done every 3 months. I am completely incapable of blow drying my hair. I can't do it. I don't even try anymore. I've been asking stylists for years to do something with my hair that wouldn't require me to do anything other than wash it, and generally they first laugh at me and then tell me that it's easy. Most hair appointments I've had over the years, while meant to be a pampering experience, have instead been exhausting and stressful. Even in the trendiest, highest rated salons, there's usually a party atmosphere, and between the loud music, blow dryers on all sides and stylists shouting in your ear (or someone else's) as to why they think you should have what is clearly not suited for your face shape, skin tone or maintenance schedule, well...any sane person would just avoid salons forever. But then I called David Dru Salon last summer and learned there's a whole other world of hair styling. David's consult was extraordinary, fabulous Q&A and really listening to me, then time under his hands gave me a cut and color which brightened my coloring, took years off my face - I went from shaggy, uneven, faded tresses to a modern Frenchie bob with dimensional color that had me smiling. I have tricky hair, mixed textures, grays, and thinning in spots, but you'd never know it from the new cut/color. Just amazing. I have since been back twice - once for a wash and blowout from Erica, who is just marvelous, and who showed me tricks to boost volume, and once more for a refresh cut/color with David, which style still looks like a million bucks, 2 months later. My hair just loves this place. David Dru Salon is pampering at its best, a group of stylists led by a master who knows how to effortlessly and graciously match face shape and skintone with cut and tint in a myriad of ways, all executed in a serene atmosphere of quiet music, free-flowing Aveda tea and ph balanced water. I never leave negative reviews, but I got my hair done a few weeks ago and I'm still very unhappy. I was hoping I'd learn to like it, but that's just not the case. This has to be one of the worst cuts i've received. I used a groupon and as soon as I arrived was told that if I wanted a blow out it would have cost an extra $25. I understand that sometimes there are fees for long hair, but an additional $25 is extreme. I opted out of it and just had a cut and condition. This service took and hour and 25 minutes, for literally a cut and wash. I really don't understand why it took so long, since the cut looks no different from when I arrived. It actually looks worse. I clearly stated what I wanted and did not get it. And to end it, they expected me to leave with my hair looking like a wed dog. I have very curly hair and when the stylist was finished washing, they didn't even brush it. I had to request a brush to brush my own hair. I don't know what kind of salon would want their client to leave with hair that was not brushed. Overall it was a terrible service and I'm very happy I had a groupon and don't pay full price. read more

Bait and switch - I was a victim of this at David Dru Salon. I was told to color my roots would be $60. When the stylist did the work, she suggested that at the end she "pull the color through the ends also." I said fine - I do this every other month at my salon in Palo Alto. However to my shock when I went to pay my bill, I was told it would be $100. The owner, Mr. Dru, explained that "you have a lot of hair, so it cost us extra, and we pulled the color through which was more expensive." I told him I had not been TOLD that there would be an extra charge, and that you couldn't spring a 66% price increase on someone without warning them. He said, rudely, "Well, it cost us extra so we need to charge you." I asked him twice, "Then why didn't you tell me so I could have had the choice of whether to go ahead with the pull -through and the color job." He did not answer. So this shop is tricky, sneaky, not up-front. I'd be VERY careful before you go here - make sure you are getting the full, honest, true price. Mr. Dru lost a customer and made $40 off the deal. Bad move, bad business practice, bad customer relations. Bad bad bad. There are lots of better places in town, I'm sure. Steer clear. read more

I have been having my hair colored for years and needed to find a new colorist. I came to David Dru Salon by way of a recommendation, when I booked I was referred to Sabrina Holguin. Sabrina is by far one of the best colorist I have ever had, my color looks natural and last for several months with a natural grow out. I highly recommend Sabrina for cut and color and especially for color, and she doesn't break the bank....I have waist length hair and get hi/lo lights and cut for around 175.00 Pros: great color, great cut, value for money read more

Had a fantastic haircut here with Chrys. I had read some reviews on him and was booked with him, but when I arrived for some reason I had been moved to another stylist. I expressed to Chrys that I really wanted to be with him because of the great Yelp reviews and without a lot of drama, he just asked if I had a little extra time and he would fit me in. I felt a little bad, because I know he had to work quicker than usual, but he did a fabulous job. He noted that my hair was very fine and suggested we cut it in a way I've never had done before. He was much more technical when he explained it to me, but in a nutshell, he kept it a bit longer in the front to add volume and it worked. I came in on a Groupon and was still treated like a full paying customer. When I asked the regular price I couldn't believe how reasonable it was! The space is small and quaint and Aveda, so it smells good. I look forward to working with Chrys again. read more

I came here this past weekend, as I was in town for my sister's short film premiere. On Friday, my sister booked a color appointment, and my husband and I decided to join her since my husband needed a cut anyway and I was considering getting my bangs trimmed. It was a shot in the dark, as my sister and I typically only go to Aveda salons and my sister had never been at David Dru in the time that she lived in LA. They were able to accommodate my husband and me without an appointment and did a phenomenal job. Chrys cut and styled my husband's hair, and it was by far the best haircut he has ever received. Chrys also trimmed my bangs, and he provided me with a lot of valuable hair advice that I will continue to follow. My sister's color also turned out amazing (though unfortunately I cannot remember the name of her stylist!). After we left, I decided later in the day that I wanted a shampoo and style, so I went back to get that done with Chrys again, accommodated again with ease with no prior appointment. Chrys is truly an artist, as I have rarely felt this good about my hair after it's been styled. He is very easy to talk to and excellent at his job. I left the salon that day, thinking I wouldn't need to come back. However, the next day (Saturday), I decided that after a rough day of preparing for the premiere that night, I needed another shampoo and style before attending the event. Chrys was available, yet again, to do my shampoo and style. He is very knowledgeable about his craft, and I've never had a stylist that I got along with so well. Getting my hair styled by him was honestly one of the highlights of a hectic, stressful trip. I only wish I had the time and money to fly back out there and have Chrys handle all my styling needs.
