So I went here for a Brazilian wax and I had a black older women I forget her name. So she was rude not talkative to where it made you feel uncomfortable .. So I left here with hair on my butt in my butt and all over my crotch very patchy ... I've had well over 30 Brazilian waxes different places states even it was by far the worst I've ever had ... The only nice thing I can say is the decor was beautiful ... Looks like a ski lodge .. The place is also very difficult to find! read more

I have visited David Witchell three times now, but I will never return, despite having a gift card. That's how bad my opinion is. The first time I visited, I was booked at the spa for a massage and spa manicure/pedicure. The massage was wonderful, the pedicure was great, and the manicure was average. I returned a second time, this time booked as a gift for my birthday from a family member. I was to have a massage and facial in the spa, then a blowout in the salon. The massage was pretty rough but effective. The facial was actually great. The blowout was apparently done by the high schooler who sweeps hair. She did not speak to me (at all) and I was painfully uncomfortable the entire time. After all this, despite everything in the system noting that it was a gift and my family member's credit card on file, I was charged the full price for all services. The conversation was QUITE awkward later when said family member asked me about my experience. Do I tell them I paid for my own gift? Anyway, it was eventually figured out. So, this experience wasn't too bad, just awkward. A little mistake. So... I decided to return once more, this time with my mom as a Mother's Day treat. Big mistake. We called and booked the appointment for two spa manicure/pedicures. However, we were instead booked for salon services. This would not have really been that big of a deal, except we were ushered to the back of the building, where we were instructed by a rude European woman to sit down and wait our turn. (But we had an appointment? No acknowledgement of that at all.) So we sat... and sat. Finally one nail tech became available and she started on my mother while I continued to wait. And wait. And wait. So our appointment for a girls' afternoon together getting our nails done quickly turned sour as my mom awkwardly sat across the salon from me, getting a rough manicure from a rude woman who was talking about how she wanted to kill some guy, and I sat on a couch trying to figure out what was going on. My husband, who booked the appointment, called and attempted to figure out what had gone wrong. Finally someone from the front desk approached me and when I told her to please cancel my appointment and just finish up my mom's services, she proceeded to pelt me with personal questions in some very poor "Introduction to Business Management" attempt to keep me talking about myself and from taking my business elsewhere. Long story short, we eventually got our pedicures (mine from a woman who was coughing up a lung and sneezing the whole time - guess who was sick 3 days later?) and left. While we were there, two other customers complained about similar experiences, both of them irate. A day or two later, a manager called me at home to apologize, telling me to come back for another manicure, but call his cell phone first. POOR management, poor experiences. Sour taste in my mouth. I'm not going back, and I don't encourage anyone else to go there now. read more

I am from California and moved to Newtown PA one yr. ago. I am often still in CA to visit family & friends & usually get my haircut & colored by my long term salon in CA. I tried David J. Witchell on a recommendation. I found it to be a cute high-end salon in a quaint part of Newtown. My stylist was very good. My haircut was average but my hair color was exceptional. However, I can not get over the outrageous prices!!!!! I am from Pebble Beach CA, a very expensive area in CA & don't even pay these prices there. I paid a total of $270.00 for cut & color, $325.00 after a tip. To me, that is near highway robbery. I will probably be looking for a different salon so that I don't have to save up every 6 weeks for this routine service. read more

I have been looking for a salon I can call my own for awhile, and this was certainly not the one for me. I went in for a color consultation because I wanted to get touched up for a wedding coming up. I could tell the stylist I was meeting with was nervous because I wanted crazy color, though truly I was okay with whatever she would have recommended for me! Instead, she had david witchell himself lecture me about my hair, that what I wanted wouldn't work for my complexion and was unrealistic. I felt like a science experiment gone wrong, with all of the stylists surrounding and scrutinizing me. The best part was after the 20 minute lecture, my "stylist" basically refused to do anything to help my hair, gave me a brochure, offered a weak apology and sent me on my way. She also mentioned that she thought I was 17, and probably refused me because she thought I wouldn't tip her enough. Extremely rude staff, couldn't wait to leave so I could just cry. I went in yesterday for a salon appointment. Long story short, 4 hours and nearly $400 later, and I HATE my hair. I don't usually get my hair colored, so I thought I was doing the right thing by going to a "nice place" and paying for a senior stylist. I brought in a picture to show the stylist, and she said "oh perfect, I know exactly what you want, no explanation needed". So needless to say I thought she understood what I wanted, but just to be safe I said, " I want it to be subtle and natural looking, and NOT BLONDE." She agreed and went to go mix the color. She brushed it in, and then said I was gonna process for about 15 minutes. Half an hour later... while she's working on another client, someone finally came around to wash it out, as soon as she did I looked in the mirror and my hair was YELLOW. Straight up, blonde yellow. Noticing the honor on my face, she gets the stylist who says "oh we just need to put some toner in it". One round of toner later and a second stylist is cutting my hair. when she finishes cutting it the 1st stylist comes by and says "do you love it?!" to which I reply, "well no, it's not like the picture I showed, it still blonde and too yellow" So she says then we just need to do another round of toner. So ONE MORE round of toner later and now I'm officially the last customer in the salon. I decided to give up at this point because it's Sunday night and I am mentally distraught and starving. After going home and having my husband try to convince me that it's really not that bad.. I woke up this morning and had to face it again, and yep still hate it. Biggest waste of money. **UPDATE** I was so upset by how my hair turned out that I decided to reach out to the salon for a refund on the color services. And after speaking to the salon's general manager he assured me that David believed in doing whatever it took to ensure that his customers were happy. He offered to have me come back into the salon and have the color corrected. After I explained how the first appointment was a very stressful and unpleasant experience for me and therefore did not by any means want to go through that again, especially after finding out that when the stylist assured me that toner would not fade or wash out she was lying, because toner only last 2-6 weeks. I again said that all I want is a refund for services done improperly. Tim (the GM) said he would speak with David and get back to me. Another day later, Tim got back to me that David is refusing to refund. So apparently David will do "whatever it takes to please a customer" EXCEPT take any money out of his pocket. He will stand behind associates who lie to customers and give poor workmanship, but will not admit to a customer that it was done wrong. read more

I have been going to the David J Witchell Spa occasionally for the past 11 years. I have never used to salon, this review is only about the spa. Every service I have ever received at David J Witchell has been superb. You will not regret trying this place. I have taken my Mom and boyfriend there as well and they have loved it as much. I have tried other "top" spas in Philly and suburbs but none compare. I always ask myself why waste my money elsewhere. There are a few things that set this spa apart from others. First, it is small and truly luxurious. You forget that there is outside world. The people who work there are very polite and do not overwhelm you. It's all about the client's comfort. The services are excellent. I recommend Alex and Bernie for massages. The complimentary steam shower after a massage is the perfect final touch. The front desk people could be less snobby but I have never experienced anyone downright rude. read more

First off, the sitting area is extremely over crowded. And there's no good place to sit and relax if you're there to wait for someone. They should think about clearing out some of the front room to make space for a nicer sitting space. I've gotten my hair cut and colored here several times. I used to love it and would go often. But recently i haven't been walking out happy with my color. A few wks ago I had to call the next day for it to be fixed. The original colorist wasn't in so I went to Kim. She did a great job fixing the mistakes. Her first priority was my satisfaction... Not her own schedule (I was a last minute fit in and apparently the front desk didn't book me enough time with her). She also asked me when I last got my ends cut....this alarmed me, as I had just gotten a haircut the day before after my color! So obviously the expensive cut wasn't even noticeable to another stylist... I will say that the front desk has really improved. I used to find them cold and unfriendly. My parents live near Newtown, so I always try to schedule a facial appointment at David J. Witchell when I'm in town. I had a facial with Callie on Christmas Eve that was absolutely phenomenal. She not only helped me figure out what products would work for my very dry winter skin, but she even wrote me up a skincare regimen and left it up at the front desk for me. I've been using the products she recommended for a little while now and my skin so much better in such a short amount of time. I just had to come on here to comment on Callie's exceptional service. This rating is specific to the trifecta of excellence who color my experiences. Front-desk person - Wayne. Wayne is a laid-back, extremely helpful and easy going guy. He'll greet you by name and with a smile, carries himself with an aloof yet refined air, and will make sure everything you need is provided. Hair - Marissa. Marissa's a little under the radar, but I highly recommend her for men's hair cuts. She is precise with the scissors, banters enough to keep you engaged but not overly so that you have to roll your eyes, and most importantly, has a good eye for style. I receive tons of compliments ever since I've been using her for the past year or so Massage - Alex. Alex is from the Russian school of massage. Think intense, deep-tissue, sports-related stretching. He'll go straight to your problem and fix it. I'm a runner and exercise addict, so whenever I'm in need of some therapeutic massage, I go to Alex. She uses a special kind of wax that seems weird at first, but is actually far less painful than any other wax I've had before. On the plus side, I commend The Witchells for adding vitality to once-sleepy State St. They are making the boro a destination with lively and upscale retail and service offerings. Bravo on that! I have had uneven experiences with the salon. I must say that this is NEVER with the work of the stylists. They are all talented and capable...both in the way they cut and style hair and the way they listen. I always emerge from there looking like a celebrity...but not quite feeling it, because of the desk experience. And asalon service this expensive is indeed...and experience. And The Witchells need to know that the experience begins...and ends...with the front desk. So it forms my first impression (and makes me want to leave) And it forms my last impression (and makes me regret the chunk of change I am handing over.) The majority of the time, that experience is awful. Chaotic, frenetic...and 98% of the time...rude. I can forgive chaos, based on how busy and popular the place is. I can even attribute that to part of the buzz and allure. But not rude, dismissive behavior. . NNot some punky kid treating me (and others) without regard, without respect, without decency. I always felt I paid too much to be treated so poorly. This is why the salon is known as "Bitchell" among my circle of friends. I truly love the home store. Interesting mix of items...certainly expensive...but I am always willing to pay for something unique and off-kilter...particularly when the item is a gift. But this is Newtown, PA...and someone needs to tell the staff to stop stalking shoppers. Most of us are there to shop....to overspend on a gift for a friend or somethign for our home. Embrace us...don't chase us. It seems that browsing is discouraged. The other day, I was leafing through a book, and immediately was interrupted by the salesperson, who insisted on putting it "behind the desk". This was particularly humorous because I was carrying nothing but a wallet...no place to hide an oversized book. Just an icky feeling. Somehow...the standards for employment must have been higher in the Denim store and the boutique where they sell baby gifrs. Because my experiences there have been pleasant. I feel encouraged to browse...I feel like they get the balance between service and stalking. But the salon and the home store need some major purging and staff housecleaning. Ultimately, you can train on processes and procedures, but you can't teach charm or class.. The salon and home store both have a long way to go. And luckily, I have other choices. read more

As a college student money is somewhat tight, but I ALWAYS find ways to make it work so I can afford to come here three times a year for a cut a color. I see Matthew for both (cut and color) and he is always professional and attentive. What makes the experience even more personal is that he some how is able to remember what we talked about in our last appointment and picks up exactly where we left off. Out of the three tiers that there are at David Witchell he is in the middle (I would say he should be in the top though) resulting in a $190.00 charge for a cut and color. To me, thats a competitive price. In my hometown of Chicago, this would cost me approximately $250.00. My only downfalls that I have with this place is the front desk, they're very rude and snippy. I'm not sure if this is because I'm younger than most people there, or if its because I'm not head to toe in designer clothes. But overall, its totally worth it. I would be heart broken if I had to find a new salon. Other pluses that come with this salon is that their hair products that are used are done by L'Oreal, specifically Keratasé (which is my favorite hair product brand). And they also use "Hair Dreams" as their brand for extensions which are the top of the line if you were to get them. Note: I would not recommend this place for men who are in need of a basic trim. My boyfriend came here once for a simple haircut and we made an appointment for him to be with someone in the lowest tier. We both thought this would be best because how hard could it be to cut a mans hair (thats already short)? Why pay more for someone whose more experienced. Well, lets just say it was the most uneven haircut I've ever seen. Next time, if he were to come here again he would be seeing Matthew compared to some girl that is probably fresh out of school. I had a manicure and the manicurist cut my fingers. The front desk did not care. A different time I made an appointment for an hour massage and they put me in for fifteen minutes. The front desk did not care. I asked to speak with a manager. The front desk said the manager wouldn't be in until Friday but that she would make sure he called me back. I never got a call. The only thing good about this salon is their makeup/brow center. They do an amazing job. Kasey is awesome. So, unless you are getting a brow wax, I would stay far away from this place. read more

I have been a customer of DJW off and on for the past 10+ years. I have always thought of this salon as upscale and keeping up with the times. My first stylist Ellie, I liked at first, but found that she and I were not a good match as stylist and client. I then moved on to Mickie who I truly loved a great deal, but she was going through a lot at the time and many of my appointments had to be rescheduled at the last minute and I became so frustrated that I decided to go elsewhere. I tried a few different salons before I realized that no salon compares to DJW. A little over a year ago I heard two women saying nothing but wonderful things about Jason at DJW so I decided to go back after 2-3 years of trying to find a great stylist elsewhere. So what can I say about Jason, except that I am so happy that I found him. He absolutely wonderful and I can't believe how great my fine hair behaves after he cuts my hair. He listened to me as I described what I wanted in a hairstyle and together we found the right cutomized style for my face shape, hair texture, and lifestyle without having to resort to finding photos as my past stylists often needed from me. What I also love is that my hair is so easy to style and grows out beautifully so I don't need a shaping every 4 weeks as I needed in the past with other stylists. As for the front end staff, I have always found them very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. If anything I admire them for being very nice in light of the often rude and demanding customers that I have first handedly seen there. read more

PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING. My first visit was for a balayage. I specifically asked for a senior stylist and was booked with a junior stylist. I went to my appointment not knowing that. After my initial visit when I returned home I noticed that my hair was very brassy, blonde, white, gray, black and orange. I called immediately to have it fixed and was asked to come right back. I went back and the stylist attempted to fix it and it still was extremely brassy and discolored. I then called again to come back and they said David would sit in. The stylist took his direction. Before drying my entire head she just did the bang section. The color on top wasn't as noticeable. She then finished drying me and I left. When I got home it was still very brassy and discolored. It was very noticeable as friends pointed it out. I then contacted the manager in the Peddler's Village location who was very rude. I emailed her pictures to show her and asked for a refund. In this day in age with all the technology we have it took days to respond to me. She kept avoiding my request for a refund. She then TOLD ME to contact the general manager. I contacted the general manager in the Newtown location who told me they don't do refunds and offered for me to return a FOURTH time to "fix" my hair. I told him I wasn't comfortable coming back and I just want my $175.00 back. He also told me he would talk to David again and call me back. I am still waiting for a response; going on 2 days now when he said he would call me the following morning. I read other reviews about clients complaining so I shouldn't hold my breath. I think its poor business to not only refund me but they let me walk out of there not once, not twice but THREE times with brassy, orange discolored hair. The only thing I wasn't charged for was writing this review which would have been the only thing worth paying for at the salon. read more

Review for Gel Mani & and Formal Up-Do: Hair was OK-could have been better but fine. Nails were bad. Would not go back for a manicure. *FYI-i'm dyslexic so please excuse any typos or misspellings :) At the last minute I agreed to go to a gala in Bucks County. I live in DC so i do not have a regular salon that I go to but was recommended by my mother who is a client at David Witchell and have heard other positive reviews. I was happily surprised that they were able to book an updo and nail apt for the next day on a busy Saturday afternoon so A+ for booking service. That said-I was very disappointed in my manicure. First-the choice of colors for gels we very few and the options they had were bizarre-they had about 20 bottles of the exact same classic red and then another 10 of various shades of nude. Almost no other options. I wasn't looking for anything crazy like neon yellow-but something other then red or nude. Red would have clashed with my gown and I didn't want a nude color so my best option was a bubble gum pink that looked like a tween should wear. I'm not sure why they don't provide more options or the colors painted on nail swatches to provide a better presentation of the dried color like most high end nail salons do. The rest of the manicure was basically rushed and proforma. An hour appointment was completed in 32 mins. I timed it. No nail soak, pushing the cuticles back was painful. No friendly smile from the tech. And the end quality of the color was bad. I had paint on my cuticles and the nails didn't have enough time to really cure so the final appearance looks tacky and rough and not the shiny lacquered look of a gel manicure. I don't have a lot of hope that the paint wont peel in a few days. The final thing that annoyed me was the lack of hand massage at the end. I've had manicures at all types of salons-from the cheap walk-in nail bars at the mall to high end spas like Bliss and the Four Seasons. Every single time they give you at least a quick hand massage as part of the manicure. I felt dismayed when she said we were finished and sent me away. For the same price the Bliss spa provides a MUCH nicer quality and enjoyable experience. My up-do was perfectly fine. I wish she spent more time asking questions about the pictures i brought and really understood the look I was going for. I had shown her a few different photos so i clearly wasn't going to a complete recreation of one of the pics. The final product was fine but I didn't love it and it didn't stay put for long which was the one major criteria i had said. But i never know who's really at fault-me for not being more clear or the stylist. I think if i had another formal event i would come for my hair but would spend more time explaining the look and confirming with the stylist they understood. They stylist had good skill so i cant argue with that. I'd love if there was more clarity in wear the check-in check out line is and maybe have a designated salon desk and another for the retail section. It got stressful. read more

David Witchell has gone downhill in recent years and I had the worst haircut of my life there yesterday. Not only was my hair hacked into and I'm missing a huge chunk in the back, but the stylist was unfriendly and the front desk staff were rude. When I called today to complain about the horrible cut there was no manager on duty for the entire day and the receptionist did not even offer an apology when I told her why I was calling. Do yourself a favor go for the salon and spa and skip the boutiques. I went with a friend, and the sales staff was over bearing following us around it is one thing to be attentive, another thing to be overbearing. This is the kind of place you need to take a friend for an honest opinion. For those prices the staff needs to be trained properly on sales technique. Know your merchandise and don't lie about how something fits or looks on a client to make a sale. There are plenty of other boutiques in the area with competent and helpful staff that want their clients to return and are not worried about a hard sell. read more

WORTH THE DRIVE!!! I drive over a hour to get to this salon to have Erik color and Jack cut my hair. Every time I think I can find someone closer, I realize I don't really like the cut or the color and schedule another visit with my two favorite stylists! I also don't get the compliments on my hair when I go anywhere else. I am always satisfied with my styling and service from Mackenzie and always walk out feeling beautiful. Sometimes, I do feel that I am not always given the most personal attention while waiting or checking out and this can leave a bad taste after a great experience. I went into the salon to get a gel manicure. The staff greeted me with a warm welcome. The store is amazing! When you walk in the smell of bath soaps and other lotions permeates your senses. You walk to the check in counter and through the hair salon up two floors to the nail salon. It's not like your average nail salon. They take good care of your nails and don't scratch the surface with rough files. I had Anna when I went and she was such a sweetheart! I was told to go check out the spa area and from the other reviews on here it seems like a very relaxing environment! I will definitely go here again and from now on for my manicures and pedicures. I went with another person and we both said it was the worst pedicure we'd ever gotten. Then, I made the mistake of having my eyebrows waxed. She butchered my arch. My hair doesn't grow back quickly--so now I have to waste time covering them or filling them in. The room I was waxed in had enough light to qualify as a night-light. How anyone could wax well in darkness is beyond me. The pedicure had no massage or pampering. We can paint and file our nails just fine--we wanted a relaxing experience. My friend couldn't get a design or anything but a solid color. In addition, the front desk personnel are inept and a bit haughty. I called to ask a question and the receptionist was bit dim. The place is ridiculously overpriced and that includes the merchandise. It reminds of people who buy brand labels just to say they own a designer bag. Anyone that goes back there--is to tell others they went there (to the flatulent David Witchell Salon & Spa). Not to mention, they paid out the a$$ for sh*% service (pardon my french). I have sensitive skin and in general scarred of pain. I have to give 5 stars to Catherine who is amazing. She uses hard wax which is less painful. Secondly, her technique is quick too. Katherine is excellent for facials and waxing, and Shannon does ridiculously awesome massages. the salon is good, but the spa is excellent. it has such a nice relaxing atmosphere. anyone will be happy here. Payed over $225 for a balayage and got nothing even close to a balayage!!! I should've been charged for a subtle highlight at MOST. I'm extremely unhappy with the way my hair turned out. She used a lot of product on my hair but the color remained the same way that it was. No where near balayage. Also didn't even blow dry my hair. I'm 15 so I have to save up for luxuries like this and $225 is how much I make in 2 months. Super disappointed!!!! read more
