Came here after a business meeting at the Salem convention center which is just around the corner. The pizza bread they start with was a bit inconsistent and I was starving so I had enough of it to know. Some pieces were soft and flavorful, others tasted dry and unimaginative. To start we had a steak tar tar and a charcuterie board. I thought the steak tar tar was good but was less impressed by the charcuterie board. I had a Pasta Genovese for my entre which was delicious. I've had great meals here, but things have been iffy in the past year or so, and my most recent visit has made me wary of coming back. The service used to be a top selling point (especially Josh, who left a year or so ago--miss you!!), but our waiter last night had zero polish, was barely friendly, couldn't scrounge up butter(?!) and timed the courses poorly so dinner felt rushed. They either gave me the wrong drink or made it wrong. They person who brought the drinks out sloshed one all over the place. My fish was pretty good but my dad's shrimp was undercooked, and the dessert was terrible--not a surprise because even in good times the dessert there has been consistently bad. Please serve flourless cake warm so it's not congealed into a hockey puck. Oh and they blasted us with bright light a full 30 min before closing like we and the handful of other patrons were overstaying our welcome in a cheap dive bar. It was telling that Davinci had a bunch of last-minute reservations available last night and Cozy Taberna had none. I hope they turn it around bc I don't see them surviving much more competition. read more

When you enter the restaurant you are instantly transported to a different magical place. It is clear that every inch of this restaurant was carefully thought out with the customer experience in mind. There are larger than life paintings, chandeliers, and mirrors that are displayed on the brick walls. A beautiful piano next to the first class bar with a balcony that overlooks it all. All of this is before you get the food. I have never had a bad meal here and I don't mind saying I think its the best restaurant in Salem solely based off of the food. Pretty solid food with a nice ambiance and live pianist's on the weekends really make for a special place to take a date. The prices are on par with similar fine dining in the area and the wait staff are pretty friendly and accommodating. At 12 bucks a glass I would suggest just getting an entire bottle of paying the 20$ corkage fee if you plan on drinking more than one glass of wine! read more

I recently celebrated a milestone birthday. Sixty. Six-Oh. You, dear reader, must imagine that a day this special comes once in a lifetime (well, duh!) and that you yourself would probably lean towards a very festive and special way in which to acknowledge the occasion. As a recent transplant to Salem, I was flattered when my very-gracious friends, Jeff and Tracy, invited me, my husband and our pal Lynn (from Gresham) out to dinner at DaVinci Ristorante. I'd never been to this venue before and am so completely pleased that this dining experience had been chosen for me. Each facet of my visit was so ... well, divine, I almost don't know where to begin this review. I suppose the beginning would suffice... I felt truly welcomed from the minute I opened the front door and entered the industrial-chic interior, a space that would be at home in Manhattan or San Francisco (certainly reminiscent of SF's once-fabulous now-closed Jardinière). We were led up a curved open staircase to a table that overlooked the first-floor dining/lounge area; the upstairs vibe was relaxing and quiet, even though DaVinci was packed ... early on a Thursday night (clearly, I'm not the only fan of what I thought must be a culinary secret). Our server was Jessica, who clearly has hospitality in her blood. Markedly pleasant, clearly capable and efficient and as endearing as a Cocker Spaniel puppy, I immediately felt at ease knowing that she would be in charge of the service aspect of our table. No matter how busy the dining room became and despite the plethora of run-of-the-mill questions about the menu, Jessica never became perplexed. Truly, she seemed to handle the traffic in the busy dining room with professional grace and an air of cheery calm. The bartender constructed delicious and attractively-presented handcrafted cocktails and the well-priced and abundant selections on the wine list fit our needs to perfection (My husband and I are both 20-year San Francisco Chief Concierge who enjoyed career moves in NorCal Sonoma County hotels for 10 years before relocating here; both of us enjoy learning about Oregon Chardonnay and Pinot Noir). The menu appears as a user-friendly marriage of Pacific Northwest and Northern Italian cuisines. The quality and presentation of each of the items ordered by the five of us over several courses completely surpassed my expectations. The house-made pastas and sauces ... the locally sourced, organic ingredients ... the thoughtfully-paired entrée accompaniments ... this was a highly-unexpected dining experience of a high-caliber scale. In fact, after 20 years of dining together as hotel professionals and as a couple, this was the first and only time that my husband literally refused to share his entree with me. Not one bite. Not one. On my 60th birthday even! Six-Oh!! He reallllllly enjoyed every bite of the pork medallions; now I'll have to return if only to try them myself. Maybe I'll share...maybe I won't. I probably will. The ambiance was highlighted by a gentleman who played a grand piano located near the entrance foyer. His playlist included the occasional jazz-tinged homage to a current hit, several hummable jazz standards, and a version of the theme song from the cartoon classic "The Flintstones" performed in a variety of jazz genres. The version of "Happy Birthday" that he played in my honor was really entertaining. He must not know how much I enjoyed it. Since my experience in July, I've sent a half-dozen parties to dine at DaVinci (after mutually concluding DaVinci was right for them): Rob, the extraordinarily organized and pleasantly gracious Manager, is consistently willing to move mountains to accommodate my guests, each of whom have returned to my hotel with truly flattering reviews and very-satisfied smiles. I always forget about this place but then when I come back for a meal I wonder why we don't eat here more often. We came here for dinner after playing golf with friends and had a wonderful meal. The atmosphere is very comfortable and even though we were the last customers to leav, there was no attempt to hurry us along. The food was all fresh and you could tell that everything was made from scratch. I really do need to do a better job of remembering them when looking for finer dining. read more

I took my wife here a couple of years ago for our second anniversary. The food was good, and the service was fine. I'm not a cheapskate and I'll happily spend whatever to celebrate a special occasion, but this is overpriced for what you get, in my opinion. Overall, not bad, will definitely go again. I'm giving it four stars instead of five due to a couple items decor wise, and a couple items with our dishes. Decor wise, it has a pretty nice rustic charm to it, lots of wood, old brick, pretty easy on the eyes, but I found the one entrance curtain to look a bit out of place without any other curtains around it or next to it, like it was out there to give a feel of being nice, but without much other thought, from the balcony where we were seated, the chains holding up the mirror over the bar look kind of clumsily done, the ventilation system is a bit glaring and out of place in my opinion, and the silver reflective covering in the ceiling windows is a bit yucky. They also have a bunch of signs up on one wall with descriptions of various food names and items, which, while a bit interesting, I think takes away from the rustic charm of the place. Personally, hide the ventilation system, the ceiling window with the reflective wrap, take the signs down, and give the entrance a bit more attention with regards to the curtain setup, and I think it would be just that much better. On to the food. My wife had the Charbroiled Airline Chicken, very tasty, loved the deep rich Marsala sauce, but the chicken was a tad overcooked, couldn't tell when combined with the sauce, but there wasn't enough sauce to hide that it was a tad dry. I had the Spaghetti Bolognese, spaghetti perfectly cooked, and the bolognese had this interesting way of tasting very rich while at the same time not super heavy, like a mild spaghetti, but somehow still packed with flavor. For dessert, we had the Croissant Bread Pudding, they apologized for burning our croissants a bit, and you could tell there was a bit of a burnt flavor in the background, but it was packed with great vanilla flavor and well balanced with the caramel and chocolate and bacon, very yummy. Overall, from what we had, you can definitely tell the level of cooking is definitely a few notches above your average restaurant, and we will be back to see what other yummy surprises we can discover. read more

What a fantastic restaurant! We went for our anniversary, first time there. It is beautiful inside, live piano music. Excellent staff. Our server, Rob, was very kind, professional, and helpful. His recs were on point! And Mo, the owner and chef, came out to chat with us. He was so gracious, and quite the gentleman. Made us feel like family. Food was delicious, fantastic wine. Came with a group of girlfriends I had not got to spend time with in several years together. We all are foodies and love to indulge ourselves with a girls night together. The ambience of da Vinci's is truly stunning. From the piano player to the light touches of the decor; exposed brick and staircase leading up to the loft is something to be a hold on any night you feel romantic and wanting to find the more elegant side of your life. We were seated promptly and explored the menu. A Buser came along to fill our waters but then stopped mid pour to go grab a wine list and failed to fill one of the glasses in a party of four. We snagged our waiter as he zoomed by and I had him grab her to fill the water glass. He took our wine order quickly but then took his time coming about getting our appetizer order and failed to get our dinner order until we had already received, and were halfway through our appetizer course-I told him we probably better get that ordered- and one at our table asked for an additional glass of red, but did t receive until another wait staff was asked. The appetizers we had were; ahi crudo, Steak Tartare and muscles and clams. All of which were delicious, full of flavor and well seasoned. Dinner came quickly- shrimp and grits, shrimp and gnocchi and 2 of us had the scallops and risotto. Everything had followed the same quality we had received in each dish- aside from the risotto. It was paste/gum like in texture. We both had really looked forward to a good risotto and were sadly disappointed. But the scallops stole the show and were perfectly cooked. As a quick side note; we had ordered the French onion soup as well yet never received it. By the time we realized it- we didn't want to make a thing about it, and the waiter never addressed it. We ordered the tear in the Sue and shared it as our dessert. We were all too full to order all of our own- which was also delicious. After he brought us our check, he came back while we were visiting to check if we had paid. I had hoped it was evident at this point that we had intended to visit and talk for quite some time. But I think he may have hoped to flip the table or thought we would leave sooner than we had? We were never offered any additional drinks not even at the dessert course. Which was also a little disappointing. We realize it is the holiday season and they are probably busier than normal but when you come to a place of this quality you assume the service around that to just be on point and it unfortunately was just a little bit lacking. These are all small things mind you, we absolutely enjoyed our meal for the most part and had a great evening together. But these are some issues that could be addressed and maybe have some more attention to detail. read more

Okay so I'll start by confessing it was a weird night. We just dropped my son off at college and we are officially empty nesters. So I started with a great martini. I loved the vibe in this place. gorgeous exposed brick, piano player (albeit TOO LOUD) and an interesting menu. We both started with the "tomato stack" which had wonderful heirloom tomatoes, roasted fresh corn, basil, blue cheese, and balsamic syrup. Sorry I didn't remember to take the pic until I unstacked the salad. It could have used less corn (although it was deliciously fresh, it overpowered) and a little more balsamic and blue cheese. I had the scallops, which were very fresh and perfectly cooked, but completely submerged in a sauté of corn, peas, carrots and celery. Now I love my veg, but this was too much and overly sweet. Don't know if it was natural veg sweetness or added sugar, but it was just too much. I confess that the combo of corn, peas and carrots always reminds me of "Veg-all", and it's hard for me to enjoy, even when it's fresh. My husband had the slow cooked pork stew which was very tasty, although oddly included penne pasta. I think this chef could be so good if he/she had the proper guidance. I would definitely come back, and within the somewhat limited universe of Salem restaurants, it's up there. Service was friendly and pretty prompt, but twice the server offered fresh ground pepper, and after we said yes, never showed up to provide it. I must confess, I would rather restaurants would just have a pepper grinder on the table and let me grind my own at my leisure. My wife and I ate here to celebrate Valentine's Day, a week later. The food, decor and service are all outstanding. The restaurant has several different sections. A wine bar, a cozy dining room near the back surrounded by wines and another dining room near the front. There is also an upstairs dining area, and a jazz band that plays on weekends next to the wine bar. The menu says it "reflects our commitment to using seasonal organic meats & produce that are available from our local farmers". We had the Pear Salad, the Roasted Beet Napolean Salad, the Misty Isle Filet Mignon and the Rack of Lamb. We tried several wines from the wines by the glass list; our favorite was The Prisoner, by Orin Swift, but we also enjoyed a couple of Aussie Shiraz's. All the wines - and food - were outstanding. Our waiter, Jonathan, was also outstanding. At one point, we expressed some curiosity about a menu item that involved hedgehog mushrooms, which we'd never heard of. Jonathan went back to get clarification from the chef, and on his way back, searched for and found a photo of hedgehog mushrooms on his iPhone that he showed us. Took a chance to try this place. Love the layout and ambiance. Definitely romantic, piano player welcomes you as you enter, and old period movie being projected on the wall. The bar is beautiful. The service was extremely slow and felt we were forgotten half the time. They had also changed the menu for the worse for New Years Eve. Got the lobster gnocchi and fried oyster appetizers to start. The gnocchi was excellent, good combo. The oysters were bad, mostly salty breading with very little substance. The sauce and garnish was better. Entrées - Duck was spongy, undercooked, and lifeless. Was barely warm along with the mashed potatoes. Scallops were poorly prepared, light sear with no taste. Slightly undercooked. Lamb was heavily seasoned and almost cold. Forgettable and sad. Dessert - Panna cotta was liquidy and tasted like grandmas bathroom. Chocolate mousse was decent Creme brulé was thicker on the crust than needed with almost no custard to back it up. This was a poor experience all around. Would not recommend, don't think I would go back again. read more

Our daughter graduated from Willamette University this past weekend, and we decided to make reservations at DaVinci to celebrate. We had late reservations - 8:30 PM - so we missed the typical crowd, which was nice. The restaurant is beautiful with a large, open floor plan. We liked the dimmed lighting, and there was plenty of room to manuever around tables. Our server was great and checked on us often, and was very knowledgable about the menu items. The food was very, very good. There was a special menu on Sunday due to the graduation, but the selections offered were still varied. We started out sharing some appetizers - the lobster caprese (which was excellent!) - it's the perfect bite of creamy burrata, meaty lobster, and fresh herbs. We also shared the prosciutto-wrapped melon. The slices of watermelon were very large, the prosciutto was delicious, and the balsamic drizzle added a nice flavor profile. Our third shared appetizer was the bacon-wrapped prawns. These were equally delicious; I just wish there were more! The girls had the seafood fettucini which they both thoroughly enjoyed. There was plenty of shrimp, the sauce was creamy, and the pasta was a perfect al dente. I had the pistachio-crusted halibut over mashed potatoes. The crust was crispy and the fish was flaky. The potatoes were great, as well! My husband had the filet and he cleaned his entire plate. For dessert, we had gelato and the chocolate mousse covered in hard chocolate. Deliciously light and fluffy so as not to overwhelm, it was a great ending to an overall delicious meal. A similar-quality meal in the Bay Area would have cost us at least $100 more, so we found it to be a great value, given the ambience, service, and high-quality of food.
