Four different owners, various degrees of success and reliability but for the first time in many years it seems to be getting back to consistent food quality and good service. Food and drinks for dinner were good, menu is on the pricey side. Wish I could say the experience was fabulous, but I have mixed emotions about it. Been going to this location for years hoping that each new experience is better than the others, but still a bit disappointed. Would love to have something like bread to nibble on while waiting for dinner to arrive. Clam chowder was tasty, but the chopped salad, not so much - definitely needed more dressing and better tomatoes (I wasn't sure if they were pickled or if they had actually gone bad). It was such a beautiful day today and I had dinner here out on their patio. Couldn't have been any more perfect. I absolutely adore this building because it's so unique and has so much of the original character throughout...and who doesn't like to see the golf course? Our waitress Taya was exceptional. Provided great customer service, has a wonderful demeanor and knew the menu in and out. Her selections were spot on. I had the 21 day aged steak and the wasabi mashed potatoes... They're really good, with the broccolini which wasn't over cooked and still had that crispness. Perfect. We had the lemon dessert that has cake inside. Still don't know what it is but..it's got the sweet plus tartness to it and light (not in calories). I know they recently got an update and new restaurant owners/management and I have to give it to them. They've changed it around. Nothing like having dinner at Bushwood Country Club! For, those of you too young, it's a reference to the classic movie, Caddyshack. All kidding aside, Magnolia on the Green is at Salem Golf Club. The atmosphere reminds me of Bushwood - wood paneling, views of the golf course, watching golfers tee off. Great experience. The food is very good - quality, flavor profiles, freshness, was excellent. I had the special, prime rib bites, mash potatoes, asparagus. My wife had spaghetti carbonara. Dessert was German chocolate cheesecake. About 1/8 of a whole cheesecake. Incredibly delicious. After an appetizer, a couple of drinks, entree, dessert, you should be prepared for at least $150 for two. It was a great experience and Matt, the waiter was outstanding. read more

Traveled to Salem for an Ironman event. After traveling all morning plus the time change, we were hungry. We came across Magnolia On The Green on Yelp but almost decided against it because most of past foods eaten at golf courses were not to our liking. However, we decided to check it out since we were already there. There were plenty of available parking. As we walked to the front of the restaurant, we crossed a "private" railroad crossing which made me smile. At first when we went inside, it seemed a bit dark and musty. However, the staff meet us a big smile. As soon as we entered the dining room, the atmosphere changed immediately. We decided to sit inside by a large picture window with a view of the patio and the golf course. My husband ordered the club sandwich with French fries and I ordered the chicken wrap with fresh fruit. I tried the local hard cider. Everything was delicious. This is not any golf club restaurant food that we had ever had. We were so glad that we decided to give it go. We'll try to come back again before we head home after the Ironman event. read more

Bad sign # 1 When the waitress shows up 20 min after you sit down and asks "are you ready to order" and you have yet to even receive your menus. Bad sign # 2 When you see your said waitress mixing drinks behind the bar for a table of 6. **there was no bartender to be seen....other than the poor overworked waitress. Bad sign #3 Poor over worked waitress had to not only cover the 4 full tables in our area, but also 1/2 of the main dining area, 1/2 of the patio and when she was not trying to juggle all of this be the Bartender as well. All in all it took about 1and a half hours to get our food....and other than the amazing overworked waitress it was the only positive of the night. So if you want to wait 2 hours for a steak that you could get at Rudy's...then by all means head out to this place.....we won't. read more

I have been to the predecessors at this location before so my party went there for a birthday dinner. I did find some challenges in not being able to change a reservation online nor find a menu that wasn't a picture of someone holding one open. I hope this will change in time. The food, service and atmosphere were wonderful! From the Brussel Sprouts and Empanadas we enjoyed as appetizers, to the Chicken Marsala, Stuffed Chicken Breast and Caesar Salad, the food was excellent. Some of my party commented the Tiramisu and Creme Brulee were the best they ever tasted. So, if everything went well, why only a four-star rating? Frankly, it was the price. Although the menu features items I have not encountered in other area restaurants, many of the comparable selections were priced 40-60% higher than their competitors. Finally, I would hope to see more locally-sourced wines and maybe the price per bottle would be more affordable. All in all, my party had a wonderful time. read more

I've been to dinner at the Magnolia location in Silverton so I was excited to have one moving into South Salem. Salem Golf Club gives a certain vibe to begin with and being able to sit out on the patio on a sunny day is a nice perk. Their dinner menu is a little pricy, and decided that it would be a special occasion splurge. However, the brunch menu is decently priced and they surely hyped it up on their Facebook page so a girlfriend and I went on a Sunday to try it out. The bar tender wasn't coming in until 2:00pm so non of specialty cocktails advertised could be ordered which was disappointing. Our waiter was friendly and attentive and did his best with basic drink orders (Bloody Mary's and a Mimosa). The food was good! There isn't an a la carte section on the menu but we wanted to split a waffle and he was able to make it happen! Four drinks, two entrees, and a a la carte entree for $83 + tip is exactly what I'd expect out of a brunch for two. Looking forward to going back and trying lunch/dinner eventually. read more

The new restaurant at the Salem Golf course is finally open. Magnolia on the Green still has the same iconic classy decor along with their fantastic patio for outside dining. Went for the Thanksgiving dinner/buffet. We had "reservations" for 3. We got there and were directed upstairs where "Jeremiah will seat you." Stood there for 5 minutes at the top of the stairs waiting for Jeremiah. Finally sat down in the three chairs they had. 10 more minutes went by and still not seated. Whole place is basically empty. At least 4 groups that came in after us were immediately seated? Finally, I had to request to be seated. We sit down at a table set for 6 and we find out WE ARE EXPECTED TO SHARE A ROUND TABLE WITH STRANGERS (who also had reservations) and this was never stated in the original advertisements nor when reservations were made? While waiting for the buffet (which finally served 45 minutes later than our reservations), the strangers expected to sit with us were seated at our round table, sat for about 1 minute and apparently were as surprised as we were with the surprise seating arrangements/reservations and decided to promptly walk out of the establishment. So we had a huge table set for 6 to ourselves. No waiter ever said a word to us. We finally just got up and got our own food at the buffet. We sat there eating 20 minutes and no waiter even says "Hi!". I (again) had to get up, chase down a server, and request a waiter just to order drinks. Food was good but they kept running out of things then it was another 15 minute wait for them to get it out. Total lack of food management. In a restaurant that is successful, a person checks the buffet once in a while to see what is running out and then heats it so it is ready. An unsuccessful restaurant relies solely upon the CUSTOMER to inform the meat cutter (the only waitstaff in sight) that they are out of several items, who then takes 5 minutes just to find someone who can heat up food and another 15 minutes to get it served. Not once during the entire meal was there a voluntary interaction on the part of the waitstaff with us. Not once. We all ran out of water and drinks. We ended up just scavenging the waters left behind by the diners who walked out from our table. No one explained there were different deserts available downstairs than upstairs. We ended up sitting another 20 minutes waiting for the check. I (again) had to get up and chase someone down to get me a check. When she asked, I told the lady who took my card that it was pretty non-existent service, and she did comp my drinks. I also left no tip because not one single thing was done to earn it by any employed individual in the restaurant. As we are walking out a man sitting with a woman at a nearby table caught my attention (and obviously having overheard my telling the bill server about the non-existent service) said "You sure hit that on the head about the non-existent customer service here." I related to the bill server what he said on the way out and actually saw her get a waiter to go help a person for the only time in close to 1.5 hours at the place. If I wasn't a more forgiving individual, I would think the complete lack of interaction from any waitstaff was purposeful and possibly racially tinged because my wife is Asian and my son is half-Asian and I WAS in a private country club restaurant. But Nah.....that doesn't happen anymore .....right? read more

This is definitely going to be a frequently visited restaurant going forward! I'm so happy they open something up in Salem! I love the Silverton location, Magnolia Grill. The menu is pretty much the same but the price is a little on the higher side at the Salem location because they're at Salem Golf Club out South. The outside seating is so relaxing. we did have to move inside because we got swarmed by wasp after our dinner was served with the meatballs. It's nice to see the co-owner Lindsay as a server visiting with customers. The service is great at this place! The food is delicious! Flavored to perfection. I was a little disappointed that they were out of the tri-tip when we went so I settled for the stuffed chicken with Gouda cheese and ham close. They were out of the sauce that went on top so I got a substitute. The chicken was fine by itself though. We got empanadas as an appetizer, and they were amazing! We will definitely be back! If you haven't tried them, check them out! You won't be disappointed. read more

Have been a Salem resident for five years. We come from a large metropolitan city where the bar is high when it comes to dining. Sadly, Salem can be somewhat unsophisticated when it constitutes what a "good" restaurant is; food, service and ambiance. There are a handful of dining establishments in Salem that rival the better restaurants in larger cities. I am happy to say that Magnolia on the Green is now amongst those top few! We had an excellent meal here last night. Food quality, interesting menu choices, presentation and service were top notch. The only "error" from the kitchen we experienced was, our appetizer, a wonderful flatbread with Bleu and Brie cheese with pears, prosciutto and (somewhat wilted) arugala, was delivered to the table uncut. It was a struggle for a diner to slice. When inquiring to our waiter, we learned that it indeed should have been cut into easy to handle slices. While he apologized profusely for the mistake, it didn't take away from how delicious the dish was. I took away one star for that and ambiance. While the space itself has an old school steakhouse ambiance (which is warm and welcoming), the lighting could have been just a tad dimmer to complete a cozy feel for the five out of five stars. Yes, the price is higher than what you'll likely pay elsewhere, but this place doesn't fit the mold of what you'll find elsewhere in Salem. What I did find odd were the prices for the dishes. Rather than rounding the cost up to the next highest dollar or half dollar, you'll see prices like "$16.46" as an example. Not sure what that was about. But for the rarity of this hidden gem, I was glad to pay it. We'll be back! read more

My meal was at lunch time in the bar area. There was only one server on duty for entire place. He was very good but he had to be everywhere. The bar area was not full but the dining room had several patrons. Service was very slow. Food was mediocre for the price. I ordered halibut fish and chips. What arrived was halibut fish and chips but not freshly breaded/battered as advertised. They looked much like frozen filets from the grocery store. The slaw looked good but I could only taste onion. I've never had onion in slaw before. The fries were coated in something and were ok, but not spectacular. I love good fish and chips but on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being exceptional, this lunch was a 3. Dessert was ordered as they had another favorite of mine: crème brûlée. It was good but not $13.00 good. I doubt I will go back. I can get better food for same price at other places. read more
