3 stars for inventory. I was in the area and decided to check out what used to be one of my favorite garden stores. I've always loved their plants. They sometimes have varieties that aren't in the big box stores. Today was no exception. I selected some rare succulents and proceeded to the outdoor checkstand to pay. That is where things went downhill. This usually open checkstand had a note stating it was closed and to pay inside. So back inside I went. After a short wait I approached the check stand and after the young man rang my purchases he handed me the receipt. I said well I need to pay you. And as I unzipped my RFID-shielded wallet to obtain my debit card the young male cashier said, "oh it already took your payment" (and he pointed to the "tap here" feature on the credit/debit card machine on the counter). I was flabbergasted! So after looking at the receipt I saw that the machine had charged a credit card that was located several cards deep inside my wallet in my crossbody bag that I was wearing at the time. I asked him to refund that and place the items on a debit card instead. Wow. After a brief discussion, both he and his "Lead" admitted that machine is super sensitive so my recommendations are to the consumer be careful when shopping here, and to ACE replace the machine or post a warning to customers. Lastly, the attitude of the Lead was a bit condescending - loud, and restating the obvious. And the cashier was aloof - detached and not listening. read more

BEWARE - Poor Quality Compost and Poor Customer Service On Saturday, July 26, my husband purchased half a yard of "humus blend" compost from the Davis Ace rock yard. When he got home, I immediately noticed several large rocks, glass shards, and bits of plastic mixed in. I called the store right away and was told there had been previous complaints, but they thought this was a new delivery. The store manager apologized and said we could return the compost for a full refund. When we returned it, the yard staff were kind and helpful in removing it from our truck. However, when I went inside to process the refund, the rock yard manager was curt -- both to us and to the associate handling the return. When I explained why we were returning the product, his only response was that it was our responsibility to inspect the compost before purchase. This was shocking and completely inappropriate. A customer buying a "humus blend" should not have to sift through it on-site to make sure it doesn't contain glass and debris. I followed up with an email and a letter to the store owner, Mark Schulein, but received no response. Needless to say, we will be purchasing our landscape products elsewhere. I was willing to write this off as a one-time mistake, but the manager's dismissive attitude and lack of accountability have made me lose trust in the quality and integrity of Davis Ace Hardware. read more

First off Davis Ace Hardware is a monopoly in Davis and their prices will show you that. I would say they are not any good value at all. Next if you find a price that looks good I will say they will ring it up at a much higher price and say it was put in the wrong place. This ACE is in a convenient spot in downtown area, it's actually close to the freeway. I've always been able to find what I need there for the jobs I was on. Service is good and this location has an interesting setup where the section for outdoor stuff is in a separate building across the courtyard. Would go back next time I need something. read more

For a hardware store located in a busy downtown area, it's pretty good. The garden center is a little pricy and the staff is disorganized and not very knowledgable. Unfortunately, I waited more than a month for something in the garden center, and gave my name and info multiple times when I checked in about it. Finally, one of the employees told me that it had come in and sold out, and no one called me. The plants are super expensive, too. One California poppy was priced at $12 with no explanation as to why. The rock yard is different. They're very knowledgeable and helpful. The people who work in paint are very helpful. read more

I love this Ace location. I frequently completely handyman jobs for friends and need specific items or small amounts of hardware. Every time I am here, the staff is friendly and helpful. One staff member, Jae, has most of the store memorized and they have helped me find items down to the aisle from memory. The selection is pretty decent, though it does not have a dedicated lumber area due to space limitations. Prices can vary, but I have the Ave rewards app and can get some money off since I am there frequently. read more

Was in the store again and nothing has changed with the enclosure. Got a picture this time, the rats seem very depressed. Employee was very nice and said she'd inform management, so we'll see. i needed to replace screws for my license plate since the dealership did a a sub par job. Anyway, I came across Josh and he truly went above and beyond. He personally came to my car to try different types of screw sizes. After a couple of tries, he finally found the perfect fit and even installed my license plate for me. When you are gifted with a beautiful orchid, you tend to want to keep the plant long after the blooms have shared their beautiful blossoms. That's why we went to Ace and found everything we needed to repot and properly care for our orchid plant. Great variety of almost everything you need for lawn and garden care. Prices are reasonable too. We found the aerated pot, all the potting materials, and even brought home some fragrant rosemary. Every employee we encountered was super knowledgeable and helpful. No one rushes you off. It's been a fun shopping experience every time we go to Ace. read more

Well...as they say... Ace is the Place"! And I have to agree. This location has certainly been a cornerstone of Davis as far back as I can remember and then some! Most people in Davis just consider this place part of their family! And even though the original owners, who lovingly started this store I believe 30 years ago, recently sold to another owner... it still remains a valued member of the Davis Community! Electrical, plumbing, nails and hammers... all the basics are here! But it also has that creative and personal touch that we all love and adore! A great big ole section dedicated to indoor plants, everything yard care, live animals (just little ones LOL) and lots of bird items as you can tell from my photos. The outdoor section is filled with seasonal plants and flowers. And soooo much more! Exceptional customer service. Help always available in every department. I want to recognize the excellent customer service and efficiency of the staff at the Rock & Lumber department of Ace Hardware Davis. Specifically, I would like to give a shout out to Matt, Lily and Josh who have helped me twice with a complicated payment method due to a large credit we had with Ace from a different city. I will not go into the story about why we were reimbursed $2000 by Ace, but when we received this large refund, it was given to us in $20 gift cards. You can imagine how many cards we received! So we used the credit to buy about $2000 worth of flagstone at Davis Ace Hardware. These employees helped process the payment one $20 gift card at a time with patience and a great sense of humor. Each time it took the cashiers 20 or 30 minutes to swipe each of the gift cards. They were supportive, cheerful, and resourceful. I also appreciated the quality of the stone that had been selected by Matt. They delivered the materials to our house within a day and one time within the hour. Took a trip to Davis Ace Hardware this morning to make a copy of a key of mine - something I've done before on multiple occasions - and just like always they were quick and incredibly kind! Even though it took me a minute to get helped at the key desk and wasn't able to get the key backing I wanted, I still left incredibly satisfied with going there for my key duplicating needs. In my experience, everyone has also been very safe in terms of proper mask-wearing and distancing (I appreciate their floor marks to keep distance in lines). And to top it off Ace Hardware is within an ideal walking distance from my apartment, which is incredibly handy! Overall I am very happy to have a hardware store so close that I feel I can rely on! As a long time Davis resident (24 years), former UC Davis Student, former UC Davis Senior Staff, local business owner (2 businesses) and frequent customer. Today will be my last time going to Davis Ace. I feel I was racially profiled and when I brought it up with the associate involved and manager on duty, I was given lame excuse after lame excuse with no apology for my experience. I understand "store policy" and trying to deter theft, but make sure you that your procedures are followed for all your customers, not just the brown ones. That was the issue I had. Why was I singled out when a white man was making a similar purchase from the same department?! If your "store policy" to follow me and carry my items to the front counter to check out apply, then they should apply to everyone else as well. Because I'm not white... dressed in sweats and a hoodie (literally just came from the gym)... or because you made a judgmental error? Shame on you. I have been a customer of Ace Hardware in Davis for 50 years, and have spent thousands upon thousands of dollars there. When told recently that as a customer, I could no longer use the bathrooms because of supposed "plumbing problems", I told the manager I would not spend another cent there until they DID reopen them. Many of the customers of hardware stores are elderly men like myself, who must use the restroom frequently, to say nothing of pregnant women customers, small children, etc. This is an inhumane policy. Either boycott Davis Ace altogether, or ask to use the bathroom every time you enter the store. Money talks, so don't support this callous customer exclusion! read more

Love that all the staff are wearing masks and gloves while I observed 2 employees cleaning in the store during my visit. Great versatility of products literally everything- gifts, garden, hardware, kitchen, bbqs and smokers, and even pets. It's a great place to go shop right now during Covid since it's clean, has large outdoor space, and I always end up buying more than I came for lol ;0) the staff is very friendly and it's a Davis original place to shop! read more

Great place to grab soil or plants and one of the few places available in Davis for parking. The staff is helpful, and the prices are standard. Like that they have a huge variety of pots, seeds, and plants for such a small area. Definitely come and take a look if I'm the area. Yall need to get better at changing ur prices because the past 3 times I've been in here to buy stuff, the price at the register does not reflect the price advertised. And then when I prove to yall the price difference it's either, "the sign wasn't updated for inflation". Or "we can exchange it for the right price but you won't get the refund for like 7 days". This is a very nice hardware store, lots of options and pretty well stocked. The staff that I've dealt with have been friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Great store for general hardware, yard, pet and houseware. Opens early with parking close by. One criticism. I had a bad experience with the paint department. My daughter, who is on the spectrum, asked for some help with a color's availability. The woman working the department laughed in her face and was dismissive, not a good look. Good news is the paint shop across the street was able to meet our needs and provide all of the supplies needed for a bedroom repaint. read more

There is a type of key that has an LED light built into the haft--extremely handy for finding the keyhole in the dark! Ace's sales assistant, Jamie McNece, informed me that Ace no longer carried that key blank (discontinued), but took my name and email address, phoned all the stores in the region trying to find it, and followed up with Ace's buyers to get them to order it again. Waay above and beyond in service! She even used her own personal email, and promised to contact me when the blanks come in. read more
