We went to this place as Yelp suggested this as a Taiwanese place. The food is neither authentic Taiwanese nor chinese. All the food items are very sweet. We ordered hot garlic chicken, dandan noodles and shrimp chive cakes. Dandan noodles was okayish at best. The service was good. The woman who was attending our table was very patient and informed us which dished would be spicy and which would be sweet. We were really surprised when she said wontons in hot chilli oil will be sweet and we should avoid it if we like spicy dish. I have tried wonton in chilli oil in at least 4-5 other sichuan restaurants and nowhere it was sweet!! Unfortunately hot garlic chicken was super-sweet (a notch lower than orange chicken) even though she said it would be mostly spicy and very little sweet. Stopped by on a Wednesday evening around 7 PM and was promptly seated. I ordered the same thing as last time, Garlic Hot Chicken and Potstickers. This time, I asked for the chicken to be spicy -- and it was, but it could have been spicier. Maybe next time I will ask for chili oil! AVOID: Spend your money elsewhere! I have been here before and it was "decent". Today was a whole new experience and it was not pleasant. First thing, the staff was preparing food in the restaurant. (Normal whatever, not a big deal) The big issue was they directed us in a cramped corner away from them. Didn't give us an option to sit. Second, I asked my waitress if they had spicy options and snapped at me with a response I couldn't understand. Didn't bother asking her to repeat. So I made a decision and accept whatever it is... as soon as I ordered, she continued to snap with an attitude "that's not spicy, we don't make it spicy". Was very shocked with her. Now for the food. It was horrible, bland, no flavor, and just lacked everything. The appearance of the restaurant was nasty. Sticky tables, dirty walls from food being spilt all over them. Dumplings they had in the wonton soup was from COSTCO!!! They just microwaved their dumplings from COSTCO WHOLESALE! What the hell?!?! What tastes good on a cold winter night? Hot noodle soup from Davis Noodle City. This tiny shop is hidden away next door to Sophie's Thai Kitchen. The intriguing aspect is all of their noodles are homemade and fresh. We ordered several items, shrimp and chicken dumplings, shrimp and chicken wonton noodles, pork chop noodles and garlic chicken noodles. The portions were all very large and filling with prices all in the $6-8 range. The food was all served quickly and was hot, tasty and filling. Davis Noodle City is a little restaurant hidden away from the main street that it's on. This restaurant delivers good Chinese rice and noodle dishes in a cozy environment. The food is enjoyable here, but there are better places in town for a similar type of cuisine. As it's name implies, Davis Noodle City serves a variety of Asian noodle dishes. The noodles are served dry or with broth in a large bowl. For a little under ten dollars, you can get a pretty good sized meal. I had the orange beef with noodles. The orange beef dish was tangy and filled me up. I wanted to really like the dish, but it lacked a bit of refinement and was a bit one note - lots of tang - and that's about it. The noodles were a nice size and thickness. But the other ingredients in the dish were unspectacular. I was particularly disappointed by the broccoli. They were tasteless and dry. My friends ordered the classic beef noodle soup. Though it looked large, my friends commented that they did not feel filled up with it, and that it lacked flavors. Just looking at it I felt that it wouldn't give you that 'punch' you're looking for in this classic. It's not bad, it's just there is better to be had. We also sampled a couple of appetizers - the crispy tofu and the onion pancake. I thought the crispy tofu was done well. Again, I've had better, but it was tasty and enjoyable. The onion pancake was limp and lifeless though. I probably wouldn't get this one again. Overall, Davis Noodle City is a place that's ok for a filling meal. The re-occurring theme here seems to be that there are better places than it. I would return here for a simple meal, but it just doesn't stand out in a strong way to be a favorite of mine. read more

A Davis hidden gem. We went for lunch 3-4 times and tried new dishes every time. Very fair prices for good quantity and quality. The black pepper beef and potstickers are stand out items. We shared the following dishes: Mustard Green Chicken Noodle: The name of this dish may sound very weird, but it's absolutely delicious! I love mustard greens! This came with fresh mustard greens and sliced chicken. The soup is a bit light; however, I like the fact that it doesn't make me feel gross or thirsty afterwards. Dan Dan Noodles: Noodles with sesame peanut sauce garnished with green onions and crushed peanuts. It was really good, packed with lots of flavor. Just ordering this dish will make you feel full. Also, it's not that spicy compared to other places. Five Spice Beef Noodle Soup: Yummy!!! Their broth was super hot and has tons of flavor. They definitely did not skimp on the portions of the beef. This review is for the tan tan noodle, which is simply noodle with peanut sauce sprinkled with green onion. It doesn't come with meat so I asked for a chicken add-on. I couldn't finish the whole dish because it tasted just like scoops of peanut butter were dissolved in water to make into a sauce and then poured over noodles. The chicken did not taste like real meat either. Don't recommend spending money on this as I could have made it at home for cheaper. I would rather go to Thai Canteen down the street the next time I'm craving noodles. In terms of interior, the restaurant doesn't seem like the cleanest. I was able to get cream cheese wontons and dumpling soup for a great price! The soup isn't anything special. But it does the job. If you add in the siracha your sinuses will be flushed! This was my first time getting noodle city, I moved here from the bay area and I am trying to find a restaurant that serves pretty good rice. This was not it! The fried rice was actually more on the white side, I actually had to cook it and get it crispy and fried I also added some soy sauce and the sauce they gave me for the potstickers and it came out pretty good after I added some extra chicken as well. The tea was pretty good I was shocked that I actually liked it. I also wouldn't suggest getting the potstickers, they're basically the ones from like Costco but the ones that I got had an odd aftertaste like they had been steamed before and then kept in the fridge and then served again. I probably won't order here again since I actually don't want to cook and I'm ordering food. But my food came out pretty OK after I added some flavor to it. read more

Noodle for breakfast! You will never find this place unless you really search for it. Its trapped in an ally way behind sophias! This place is great for cheap not so asian food. The portions are humongous and worth it, especially for those broke as college students like me. The service is ok, not the best, but not the worst. They are pretty fast in bringing out the food. I was devastated and heartbroken by my meal. I feel compelled to warn other foodies of my error, especially if they are just visiting the area, like I was. Also, don't make a further mistake and invite your white co-workers to try this place with you. BTW, this review is only for the food. The service and prices and atmosphere are great. The seats are somewhat uncomfortable but that doesn't affect my star rating. From the reviews (3.5 Yelp, 4.2 Google at time of writing), we came here expecting cheap, mediocre, warm Chinese hand-pulled noodles. What we got was cheap, bland, flavorless, tough, downright horrific Chinese hand-pulled noodles, and other flavorless dishes. The only upside of these noodles is that they are warm, and they are calories (at a compelling price point). We had: Dan-dan noodles (flavorless and drowning in too-sweet peanut sauce), Five-spice beef noodle (is this soup broth just water?), eggplant and noodle (way too sweet), veggie dumplings (so bad, I did not know dumplings of any kind could be bad). All the noodles were tough and seemed like they were not fresh or actually hand-pulled. All of the food listed as "spicy" was not. It was not even Wendy's spicy chicken-level spicy (I am super sensitive to spice level). The beef was good but there was like 2 oz of it (that's a generous estimate). Where is the chili oil? If there was chili oil, it would have saved our meal, and I probably wouldn't be writing this right now. If you want cheap late night food, order Dominos, it will be 10x better. If you're craving something "Asian-ish," go to a gas station and get cup-o-noodles chicken ramen. If you are in Austin TX, go to Xian Noodles in the Mueller district and order all of the dishes I listed above and tell them I love them and miss them dearly (and I should really write a review for them). read more

I've been coming here for years! Since i use to attend UCD. I really enjoy coming here for a traditional "home cooked" meal. The food was excellent and they have friendly service. The location is a little hidden so everyone should try to find it and give it a try. My fave dishes are the Pot Stickers with the crispy skin, the chicken salad with peanut sauce is fresh and delightful, the 5-spice beef over noodles or rice is excellent with full of flavor and tenderness. Take a look of the photos I posted. Whenever I am in the Davis area traveling to or from the Bay Area I'm always thinking about making a quick stop to have some of my fave dishes here! They're good people and the food is ready fast but I'm afraid that's the best I can say about it. I tried two different dishes and they tasted and looked as if they were heated from frozen. The sauce was oddly gelatinous and lacking in any flavor. The chicken tasted like nothing. I could not continue eating either item (and I will eat almost anything). The springs rolls reminded me of the kind from the frozen food section. They were mushy inside the only good thing was that they were crispy. The garlic hot chicken was extremely salty and I didn't taste any garlic whatsoever. It was a lunch special so the service was in the small side. Not enough chicken to have for dinner. I asked if, I could substitute the steamed rice for FriedRice and pay the difference. waitress gave me a hard no on my request. Water under the bridge. My order comes minutes later. Flavor was good but, there wasn't any beef on the BlackPepper dish I ordered. I waived the waitress and told her there was no beef on my order. she replied, there's only a little bit. For a place that has noodle in their restaurant name I expect amazing noodles and unfortunately Davis Noodle City just fell short. The food here isn't bad, but it isn't super good either. Their noodles are large and chewy and they give you a lot of noodles when you order their noodle soups but the broths are not flavorful enough. The mustard green chicken soup was bland. The only soup I would recommend is their beef noodle soup. The beef is super tender and the broth is okay. I've definitely had better beef noodle soup before. I personally prefer Hometown Chinese Restaurant's beef noodle soup better. Their house specials are fairly decent with the option of choosing rice or noodles but depending on what you get it may be overly sauced. The spice beef noodle dish was super saucy. It may have well been soup at that point. Their mustard green chicken is also super saucy. The sauce is super thick, way too much cornstarch. Their dumplings tastes/looks like dumpling house and it's decent tasting. The skin is super thick and there's plenty of meat stuffed inside. I also like their fried green onion pancake, you can never go wrong with fried foods!
