I was excited because it was cool outside and I was hoping this would pick me up. I was in for a world of disappointment. The broth was so FREAKING PLAIN AND BORING. During my UC Davis years... (can't believe it's already been like a year now since I graduated ;_; ) freaken.... this was the BEST place in the world. Davis Noodle City was so underrated it bogglezzzz mah mind. Their noodles are homemade, fresh, made by the nicest asian ladies. The restaurant is tiny, comforting, clean, and well-kept. Their prices were so cheap I almost felt bad. Pork Chop Noodle Soup was THE best. If you like peanut sauce, DEFINITELY get Dan Dan noodles.. (basically fresh noodles with peanut sauce piled on top). Their best soups in my opinion were wonton noodle soup and pork chop noodle soup. Their lunch entrees were amazing and hearty portions. Their crispy tofuuuuuuuuuu!! So good! After being in Davis for 5 years, I finally decided to try this place tonight. It was a cold night and I was just in the mood for something soupy like noodles or ramen. I was too lazy to drive to Sac for Shoki ramen, and wasn't in the mood for pho at Hoa Viet so I dragged the bf here with me to try it. We ended up ordering: 5 spice beef noodle soup: I thought this was pretty good, but the bf didn't like the flavoring. It wasn't spicy at all, he had to add a lot of their hot sauce in to lessen the flavoring of the soup cause he really couldn't stand it. Personally, I don't think find anything wrong with the broth and I think it's actually flavorful. The pieces of beef they have here is actually really soft and tender. I think this is really a hit or miss for different people. This was $7.55, it comes in a really large bowl..I think you can actually share it between two person. Hot oil Pork Wonton: There were 10 pieces of wonton and it was good enough to satisfy both of us. I really like the sauce they put with the wonton...it's like peanuty sauce that's has a hint of spice to it..It was just good! I will definitely come back for this for sure. When we got there, we were promptly seated. The customer service wasn't the best, but they were friendly---super nice. I ordered Five Spice Beef Noodle Soup. My friend ordered Dan Dan Noodles. My meal wasn't that great, to be honest... but it did fill me up about 75%. It really tasted basic, something that could be made at home at half the price. (Mine was $7.55 before tip). The broth was okay, the meat was pretty tender, and the noodles...well, they were homemade and tasted alright. The other noodles.. Dan Dan.. well, let's just say it was my first time trying it and I did not like it at all. She told me that she had better and that this place didn't do too much justice for it. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place to a friend, but that's just me. This place was relatively crowded too...so I was a bit surprised. The service, however, was relatively quick. You don't have to be inside the restaurant to smell the yummy aroma of Chinese food that lingers outside. My best friend and I were trying to decide where to eat, and we almost settled for the Hotdogger, but the smell of noodles enticed us to eat here. My noodles came in a clear broth with a healthy serving of veggies and about six wontons. I thought my noodles were tasty and the soup had an onion-y flavor which I loved. My best friend seemed content with her noodles which she described as spicy. While we were half-way done with our noodles, our dumpings (which were supposed to be appetizers) finally came out. When my order arrived, I took one sip of the soup-broth and my mouth dried up instantly. They put waaaaay too much MSG in their broth. I know I should expect some MSG when I'm eating out at a Chinese place, but this place went absolutely ridiculous that night! Davis is a typical stop for me and my friends on the way to Tahoe. Nowhere else on the way do you have such a concentration of diverse dining options at such low prices. I think it's fair to say that Beef Noodle Soup is the national dish of Taiwan - regardless of whether your Taiwanese, a mainlander raised in Taiwan, or a second generation born here, you love this dish and you have your own way of making it just right. The Five Spice Beef Noodle Soup they make at this place may not be just like grandma, but it's still pretty dang good. Their house beef broth comes served piping hot and despite being a clear broth, has enormous amounts of beef flavor. The individual chunks of beef in the soup aren't huge, but they put a decent number of them in so you definitely don't feel like you're being ripped off. The beef chunks are also perfectly tender, well seasoned, and just fall apart in your chopsticks. Veggie wise, they went a little lighter than I prefer, but not a big deal. The baby bok choy was cut in quarters (I'm assuming so that the size is proportional to the beef. I'm prefer them halved but grandma uses much bigger beef chunks), the flowery sliced carrots I think I could have done without all the artsy-ness and more of 'em, and scallions - we need more scallions in this soup, period. The noodles were great as well, although I'm not convinced they're home made - unless by home made they just mean they were made fresh and not necessarily in-store. The noodles are very good, tasted fresh, cooked perfectly for some noodle-soup slurpage, but I am convinced I've had these exact noodles elsewhere. Prices are very reasonable. A meal will likely run less than $10 unless you start getting beer and wine. Ambiance at this place is pretty traditional Chinese joint - some booths to sit at, traditional Chinese music in the air, middle aged Asian women chatting away in Taiwanese. This place would be pretty good even in the Bay, up here in Sac where we're stuck with an overwhelming number of either Cantonese-style or Americanized Chinese joints, this place is a God-send. So long as this place is around, I know where I'm getting my Beef Noodle Soup and Scallion Pancake cravings met. With the huge crowd at next door Sophie's Thai restaurant I was afraid we would have a wait, but actually there was only one other couple there, so we practically had the place to ourselves. Seating was very uncomfortable for a large person but the food was great. I had heard good things about the DanDan Noodles, so ordered them. Delicious noodles in broth with lots of chopped peanuts A bit one-dimension for a main course, but they were good and i have enough left for lunch today. My husband's five spice beef soup was fabulous and I finally know what the Food Network means when the talk about "depth of flavor." I will definitely order that on a return visit We started the meal with green onion bread, that was to die for. I had heard that you were served kim chi when you arrived, but we did not get that. I didn't even know it was there until a friend brought me here. I ordered the wonton soup with noodles and my friend ordered the pork noodle soup. Both soups were okay, they tasted similarly to a watered down campbell's chicken noodle soup, but some of the spices were good! I had to add quite a bit of Sriracha to make it more flavorful and my friend some pepper and soy sauce. They are amazing however, for their portion sizes. The bowls are humongous and really filling, which is so nice. At the price point, I don't know if I would come here too often. I think for around 8 bucks this could use some sort of improvement. The noodles are best when you're hungry and need some quick foods under ten dollars, this is your place to go! The restaurant is has a good amount of space and is roomy and comfortable. There are a lot of booths to sit in if you want some privacy and the servers are nice and non-invasive! This is a wonderful little hole in the wall! If you're looking for a cozy and quaint little spot to relieve those hunger pains, especially after a long day of class, then this is the place for you. This place is under new ownership! And it is a wonderful change of management. There wasn't any big change to the interior but the dishes and atmosphere has grown homey'er. I have been here a number of times but since the change, it feels better. There are some favorites of mine which I can recommend. For appetizers their assortment of dumplings and potstickers are a great place to start. Also the fried tofu cubes and fried green onion breads are a great option as well. Their 5 spice noodles with braised beef is a must try or if you're looking for a more vegetarian alternative, they provide daily specials such as an eggplant with tofu with your choice rice or noodles and many more other vegetarian alternatives. My girlfriend and I always try to get something different but the aforementioned would be my list, but for her it would be the fried pork chop with rice or the curry chicken with rice. All in all, I would highly recommend this spot for all. I usually have to travel a good 20-30 min to get here, but we'll worth the drive. read more

This place is really good and has very cheap food. I went here for the first time with some friends. I'm going to save you some time. Just order the spicy beef noodle soup and the green onion pancake (I think the menu called it green onion bread). The beef noodle soup is tasty, with just the right amount of beef and a nice meaty broth. You can tell that they make the noodles themselves. It tastes that fresh. The green onion pancake is a little crispy and it makes a wonderful accompaniment to the beef noodle soup. I also tried the dan dan noodles with peanut sauce over them. If you only get one item for yourself, go for the spicy beef noodles. I would say that the green onion pancake and the dan dan noodles are great to share. Only get the dan dan noodles if you really like peanut butter! This is a very solid place. Overall, the place is quite small but the food is good and the customer service is spot on. I had heard so many good things about this place, I gave it more than one try. Unfortunately, neither times hit the spot. To start off with, the restaurant itself feels cramped. The layout, lighting, actual space, and table size all contributed to the feeling, and made for a slightly stuffy visit. Service was so-so, if it were food, I'd call it bland. Speaking of food, food wasn't that great either. I've ordered a couple of different noodle dishes, as well as different drinks and appetizers, and none of them were all that great. I'm not quite so sure what it was, but the tastes were almost forgettable. if you're deciding between dumpling house and davis noodle city, go here! much, much better. their prices are reasonable and service is prompt. the place isn't too big (it's at the back of the suite on E street) but it's never super busy when i go. all of their chicken wonton soups are great, plus the fried rice and potsickers. I haven't tried a lot of their dishes, but have enjoyed what i have tried a lot. DNC is one of my favorite places in Davis and a great value if you're looking for something to eat in downtown! read more

I got gipped, never ever coming to this place ever again. They rip you off, overcharged me.. um hello I remember the prices from your menu. They're also kind of rude, seem to love tips, but yeah.. no, you didn't get one from me because I paid more than agreed upon (aka the menu). And this place doesn't deserve any tips. But if you really want to know how their food is, it's mediocre, I actually like the soup from the 5 beef spice thing. Broccoli is a strange addition, it's okay.. The thrown-in, carelessly uncooked carrots did not impress me however, beef was really good. Noodles are okay. However don't get the spaghetti thing.. it's gross, too salty. I wanted to like it but couldn't. I ordered this to-go. That salt and pepper tofu, is decent, maybe more than decent.. but as an app, it came out way after I got my meal.. It reminds me of my favorite one at a place that closed down, similar way they made it. Sauce for it isn't bad. Place isn't authentic, it's a bit Americanized, but yeah never coming here again although some other things on their menu frankly did tempt me at the time. ***Go to Hometown if you want authentic Taiwanese and better service. read more
