Let's start with what Day Maker absolutely nailed: the coffee shop at the front entrance. Genius move. Whether you're waiting 30+ minutes for a table (as we were), wrangling a hangry toddler, or just need a grab-and-go pick-me-up, that little coffee nook is a saving grace. I grabbed the South Texas Mocha and my breakfast buddy got the seasonal Strawberry & Cream Matcha. Hers won. Mine felt like it was missing something and we just didn't connect on that South Texas vibe. Now... the check-in. We asked for a table for two. The hostess heard "three," insisted on "three," and repeated "three"... three times, with us correcting her each time with "no, 2". Cute theme, I guess? Unfortunately, this confusion led to us being skipped in the seating queue. I was seconds from asking if we'd slipped into a brunch time warp when our name was finally called--for a table for three. Welp. Once seated (finally, for two), we were hit with Austin Brunch Decibels--aka loud enough to make you feel like you're brunching inside a blender. But THEN... came Piper, our server, who was honestly the MVP of our experience. Sweet, attentive, and juggling tables like a brunch goddess. If I could Yelp her separately, she'd get 5 stars and a standing ovation, to say the least. We ordered biscuits and gravy to start. Now, I'm a born-and-bred Southerner, with deeeeeep Southern roots. I take biscuits seriously--like, your great grandmother's Sunday post church supper levels of serious. These? They looked like bread impersonating biscuits. Heavy. Dense. No flaky joy. The gravy tasted more like bacon drippings than actual sausage gravy. I tried salvaging it with butter and jelly, but even then... the butter wasn't salted. Tragic. $9 later, I had taken one bite and waved a white napkin of surrender. However, again - I'm on a whole other level of what's an acceptable biscuit. I ordered the Crab Cake Benny next. I had high hopes. Researched it, bookmarked it, dreamed about it. One bite in... and I was immediately transported to the nursing home cafeteria. No seasoning, all fishy. Bless Piper, who handled it gracefully when I asked to switch it out. I pivoted to the churro pancakes. They looked promising--big, fluffy, golden stacks--but they lacked the Mexican chocolate shavings, and the horchata butter and cajeta drizzle merging had a weirdly chemical aftertaste. One bite, and I was done. My friend tried them and said, "Honestly? This tastes like iHop on a slow day." Ouch. Final thoughts: I wanted to love Day Maker. The concept is strong. The staff is kind. The coffee nook? Inspired. And judging by the crowd, lots of people do love this place. But for me? If I'm paying Austin brunch prices, I want food that tastes better than what I make at home. This was my first time here. The decor is bright, inviting, and super cute! It was Saturday morning, and the place was packed. They do have a separate area for to go coffee and pastries. We started with a carafe of blood orange mimosa, and it was excellent, so much so that we ordered a second. (There were 4 of us sharing it, so it's not as scandalous as it sounds.) I ordered the chorizo Benny from the gluten free menu. I subbed fresh avocado for the avocado mousse since the latter is made with heavy cream. It was delicious! All of the components really worked together, and everything was cooked perfectly. Service was amazing! At the end of the meal, one of the women didn't finish her sausage because it was undercooked. She just left it on the plate. Without us saying anything about it, the manager came over and offered us a complimentary slice of cheesecake and a bowl of fresh fruit (for those of us who can't eat cheesecake). Coffee bar for grab and go items (no seating ) , regular bar and indoor seating - outdoor seating appeared to be for waiting guests only. Good size menu with an seat of options. We ordered the shareable cinnamon roll, 4/5 could have had a little more icing and Cooke a little less - slight dry IMO , but good flavor over all. I ordered the sweet potato hash & a side of cheesy grits. The hash was as good, but something through it off for me - unable to pin point what it was, maybe my drink choice didn't mesh well. The grits were delish. A little larger grain but taste was like a loaded baked potato -5/5. My friend had the steak and grits and described it as delicious . This was my first time visiting Day Maker Half Day cafe for brunch after my long run. It was a brief wait (20 minutes) to get a table but it was worth the wait. The inside of the restaurant is a fun retro vibe very colorful. I didn't even recognize the space from when it was an IHOP. The service was amazing. I had questions about the menu specials and the waitress made helpful recommendations and had tried the dishes beforehand and had interactions with the chef so knew how the provide helpful feedback about the dishes. We started the meal off with a carafe of white peach mimosas. These were probably the best tasting mimosas that I have ever had. The carafe was generous with white peach puree that went nicely with the Champaign. I had the blue crab salad which was as also one of the best salads I have ever consumed. It came with mixed greens, boiled egg, thick cut bacon lardons, tomato, caper, creamy tarragon dressing, crouton dust, grated pecorino. My dining companion had the chorizo benny that came with Masa cakes, refried black beans, spicy chorizo, poached eggs, avocado mousse, chipotle hollandaise, escabeche. He subbed the potato wedges with the cheesy grits. We saw another table partaking in breakfast shots so in conclusion of the meal we ordered one of each: tequila sunrise and bourbon bacon. But, I do admire taking over an old IHOP with a perfect audience of Rollingwood/Westlake peeps just minutes away. Former steak place next door also in control (Salt Traders) with a coastal vibe and seafood centric menu. GF asked me for something new and I actually passed up going north for longtime Austin favorite Chez Zee. Haven't been there in years either. I guess because constant schedule of car club stuff; Jim's in Oak Hill as standard for weekend dining. Back to Day Maker, perhaps the first mistake I made was choosing the biscuits and gravy as my first choice. Kinda been there done that in my own mind; good bites but I've had it before. Wasn't exactly piping hot either. I went off posted menu and chose the steak and caramelized onion enchiladas. Advertised with Suiza sauce was a nice flavor with a similar profile to roasted tomatillos and sour cream mixed together. Although enjoyable the caramelized onions were barely present. Taters were a unique approach. Griddle some cheese and then fold mashed taters in for the potato element. If you tasted one without the other it was not a breakfast dish. Paired it was better bites; not the most successful $19 dish I've ever had with one single (tiny) sunny egg on top. GF chose the pastrami sandwich with perhaps better results. My friend and I met here for breakfast on a Sunday. I arrived a few minutes early and to my surprise, they sat me without my friend. I can't remember our servers name but I gave her some purple PEEP earrings that I made. She loved them! She came back later with the bill and she had them on! Yay! She was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We both loved our food but what we both thought was a little odd was the shrimp still had their tails on. Normally this is fine but she ordered the avocado toast which came with an egg on top. She had to lift up her egg and dig out all of the shrimp to get their tails off. Perhaps just one shrimp on top that still had its tail for show. It was a bit awkward to deconstruct her beautiful breakfast. Needless to say it didn't not stop her from gobbling it up. ;) I LOVED mine. I ordered the Chorizo Benny. Our server claimed the avocado mousse was great to dip the crispy potatoes in but I disagree. I went with the drip and it was a robust blend. Decided on the state fair waffle, which is a twist on a classic, using a chive and bacon waffle with berry compote. Last month we tried to casually drop in around noon for Sunday brunch. Bad idea. The wait time was about 27 hours. Today we were smart. We got on the waitlist around 10 AM, arrived around 12:30 and were seated almost immediately. Our server was friendly, funny and, when asked for opinions, gave good, well informed ones and steered me right to the breakfast I wanted--the Hot Chick, which is a delicious, spicy, but not-too-spicy chicken sandwich. It's a big, well-seasoned fried chicken thigh served on a soft brioche-type bun with big cuts of bread & butter pickles, a good amount of mayo, and just the right amount of coleslaw. The potato wedges that came with my sandwich were also perfect. They were so dark I was afraid they might be hard or overcooked, but they were not. They were just right--well-seasoned, interesting, but soft and creamy inside. My friend was very happy with her fresh-squeezed blood orange juice and her Migas Verde, which looked, and was, delicious, she said. Wonderful new addition to the area! I was so excited when I heard the same owners of Jack Allen's were going to be opening a new concept here - and they delivered! The decor is funky and fun! I love how colorful it is and fun murals on the walls, great place for a casual lunch or to take the family! Also an ideal brunch spot. There is a coffee to-go counter at the entry if you want something quick, but I'd highly recommend sitting at the restaruant if you have the time. The food is fantastic - I tried the fried chicken sandwich and burger and both were very good. The only thing I was a little dissappointed in was their juices - I ordered a sunny juice which was orange with mint, basil, and other herbs, but really all you could taste was the orange. It wasn't as crafted as the menu made it sound. Still a great fresh juice, but with all their other drink options on the menu I would recommend trying something else (unless you are ok with just juice!). Daymaker is a new breakfast concept from the well known Jack Allen's kitchen. It is a very festive super busy breakfast restaurant in south Austin. In ATX, breakfast choices are abundant so there must be something great to get big crowds like these here. The inside of the restaurant is bright, loud, and vibrant. The menu has an interesting twist to many common dishes. Migas plate with verde salsa, Hangover enchiladas topped with a fried egg, huge thick pancakes, cinnamon rolls served in a big iron skillet, and a few options for eggs benedict. I had Chorizo Benny, not over seasoned flavored, great poached eggs along with a biscuit. They also serve burgers, typical breakfast dished, and chicken & waffles. The bar is serving up many different coffees, espressos, bloody marys, several wine options and fresh juice drinks. You also get served a variety of different salsas to choose from mild to spicy. The service is also an excellent standout for this place. Servers are upbeat and filled with friendly conversation. Food comes out very quickly from the kitchen. Typical plate will be around $15.00. Servers say workday lunch crowd will also get busy with nearby offices. I have always enjoyed what the chefs make at Jack Allen's locations and you will not be disappointed with the menu selection offered here. She had the Tequila Sunrise which had Tequila OJ and if i remember pomegranate juice. I chose the Bourbon and Maple syrup and avocado slice of bacon that was added into the shot. Normally I don't drink bourbon, however the addition of maple syrup and that bacon, changed my mind. Damn good. Could not complete this review without complimenting our server, Eliana. Gravy was under seasoned and the consistency was weird, like maybe they used a cornstarch slurry to thicken it? Which isn't my thing. Crabcake benny was bland and crab was fishy, we sent it back. Went to this vibrant, old school looking cafe for Father's Day with my daughter and 2 grand kids. It was very lively and with a full house. Loved the decor and felt like I had stepped back in time to when Diners were a thing. We ordered several dishes to share. So happy we did. We got a taste of sweet and salty. So many choices to choose from. I would definitely go back to try other items on their menu on my next visit. read more

Got on the waitlist before arriving and was seated immediately upon arrival. The waiters were so friendly to me while I waited for my friend to arrive. I had the Migas verde upon recommendation by the waiter - it was very good! A little pricy for the amount of food, but I think that's most places these days. Decor was funky and fun - a nice bright brunch spot! It did get pretty loud in the restaurant as the Sunday brunch crowd arrived, so we had to leave to continue our conversation. So, this was our third visit yet first time to actually eat here! The first two times had well over an hour wait, and we moved on. This time, we waited - and now I see why. Super tasty and creative menu with delicious options. My son and I both had a sweet potato bowl, and it was hands-down amazing, exploding with fresh flavors and super healthy. My husband had the grits and étouffée breakfast dish, and he loved it as well. Will return! It's worth the wait. read more
