Forgive yourself if thinking this Chinese restaurant is sketchy looking, because it honestly is. In fact, pretty much any Chinese place on the South Side has to be approached with caution it seems. De Rice is one such place in Kenwood. Even though it's at best described as an up and coming area, it's not as bad as it looks. The prices are pretty good for how much comes in a meal. As of now it only has delivery and carryout. It's just as well, because it wouldn't be much fun eating here. This is a pretty stale environment, making it better to enjoy it somewhere you can feel comfortable and whatnot. Came by to get carryout. The best vegetarian choice is the House Special Tofu. It's about $8 at lunch. This entree is fairly simple, consisting of tofu mixed with spicy bean sauce, and vegetables such as black mushrooms. About as good as you can expect. There's a pretty good spice level and some actual flavor. Better isn't easy to find among South Side Chinese. It has the basic Americanized Chinese stuff which is pretty okay in all honesty. We were in town for a family funeral and once we got to the hotel going back out was not an option! This place was fast and the food was great. Large portions (even though we ordered the small). I ordered chicken egg foo young for my mom and she was able to get 2.5 full meals. The spring rolls (cold veggie and tofu) were deliciously fresh and they were accompanied by the best sauce with bits of peanut! I also ordered a veggie dish with tofu and had enough for lunch and dinner for the next couple days. I think my favorite was the almond cookie - pretty sure they are just bought, but they were authentic, crispy, with the light almond flavor. I was chilling at home last Saturday and didn't feel like going out so I ordered De Rice through Grub Hub. I have driven past this place for yearsssss and never tried them. I was always hesitant. When I looked on Grub Hub they received great reviews. So I gave them a whirl! He didn't call first and ask for me to come down. He delivered my food to the door with a smile. Everything was packaged well. Sweet and sour sauce, hot mustard, soy sauce and fortune cookies were all in a separate bag from the food. They didn't give napkins or plastic forks with your order though. *eye roll* -The fried rice container was stuffed beyond capacity!!!!!! *score* It had lots of beef too! *double score* It was good. Orange Peel Chicken Bka Orange Chicken..it was okay. Not the best I have had but okay. Nothing to rave about but nothing to complain about. Crab Rangoons were too sweet for my taste. My children liked them (of course)! The Black Pepper Beef has ample slices of Beef! They weren't skimpy on it at all. It was tasty. The egg rolls were good. This is my second time getting carryout from this place. I'll be honest, the first time was a bit of a mixed bag. But the egg rolls and pork ribs were so deliciously memorable I decided to try them again. What a good decision!!! I got a HUGE order and absolutely everything was amazing: * Egg rolls: big and fat, crispy, so tasty. Everything you want in an egg roll! It came with sides of both sweet & sour sauce and hot mustard. * Scallion pancakes: These were the one item that were kinda meh, mostly because they had gotten a little bit cold. Came with a side of soy sauce-based dipping sauce as well as a small container of HOT chili oil. I licked just a couple drops off my fingertip and it sent me sneezing! * Vegetable egg foo yung: SO GOOD. I'm not usually a fan of this dish so I only got a half order. Even though it was one of my favorite items I'm glad I downsized because the pancakes were super fat - at least 50% thicker than any others I've had. There were big broccoli florets in them, making them so thick. I've never had egg foo yung with big chunks of vegetables like that, but it was yummy. The broccoli was well cooked so it was soft like the rest of the pancake. * Chicken moo goo gai pan: possibly my least favorite dish. The sauce was super tasty and the chicken was perfectly cooked, but the chicken was unappealingly white. Not browned at all. And the mushrooms (the primary vegetable) weren't cooked as much as I would have liked. They were just enough to be not-raw; but still full of all their water. It was still good, don't get me wrong; but everything else was EXCELLENT. * Shrimp yu shan. I've never had this dish before, but it was a winner. Perfectly cooked and plentiful shrimp, delicious sauce, fresh veggies ... It's marked with a hot pepper on the menu; but I would say it isn't spicy at all. * Empress Family with pork. Possibly my favorite dish (other than the egg foo yung). The pork pieces were large and plentiful with just the right amount of breading. The sauce was delicious - and again, even though it was marked with a hot pepper, it wasn't at all spicy. And of course they packed the pork pieces separate from the sauce so they didn't get soggy. If I had one suggestion, it would be to include more vegetables. All the other dishes had lots of veggies; this one, not as much. * Cantonese Black bean with beef. No wait maybe THIS one was my favorite. LOL The sauce was as good as any black bean sauce I've had anywhere; but what put this dish over the top was the quality of the ingredients. The green peppers and onions were remarkably sweet and flavorful and the beef was just fantastic! I live in Hyde Park so I have LOTS of options closer to my house for Asian food. But none of them are the kind of Cantonese I'm looking for when I'm craving a night of "Chinese takeout." (Southside Ken is, but it's not yummy at all unfortunately). The only redeeming quality of this place was that the food was delivered quickly. Apart from that the food was overall flavorless, with the exception of the crab Rangoons which were a bit overstuffed but tasty. The Szechuan plate with beef didn't really taste like anything at all but my god it smelled like a cross between a port-o-potty and a urinal cake. I said this aloud and my girlfriend didn't believe me then took a whiff. The sesame braised chicken also had a very peculiar smell and the taste was quite off. The food tasted very stale and was overall greasy. FINALLY! Great Chinese delivery in Hyde Park! Tonight I ordered the Sweet & Sour Chicken, Crab Rangoon, Vegetable Chow Mein, Potstickers and Cantonese Egg Rolls. I was quoted a 60 minute wait time but had my food within 35! And everything was so good... and so authentic! The Crab Rangoon was stuffed to the brim with filling and absolutely delicious. The potstickers were also a knockout. The Chow Mein wasn't quite what I was expecting... it was mostly vegetables with few noddles but it was very tasty nonetheless. We just ordered delivery from De Rice for the first time and we will definitely order again!! Food came FAST! I'm pretty sure the owner delivered it to us himself. Everything was hot and fresh. The portions are HUGE! Literally our box of fried rice was stapled shut because not even one more grain could fit inside. We ordered the veg fried rice, spring rolls and Hot & Sour soup. We both enjoyed every single thing, it was flavorful and satisfying. The only critique would be to have the soup spicier but that's our personal preference. Asian craving, quick food, hyde park...where to go? De Rice! Let me state first that this is the americanized chinese food, which is still tasty. Went in with 2 hungry friends and we ordered shrimp lo mein, orange chicken, and crab ragoons, all family size. We were unable to finish it. The lo mein was very good with lots of shrimp surprisingly. Orange chicken is definitely not spicy and not overly syrupy sweet like other places. And it's not that rubber chicken texture you find. Crab ragoons, more cream cheese than crab but I'm still a fan. I'd go back and try other stuff on their menu. The staff is friendly, the place clean, and they check ID when you use a credit card which is a definite plus. Most places don't do that. Check it out! Absolutely love the food here, and to think I couldn't fine good Chinese food in Hyde Park. I've always ordered food never ate at the place itself but the service is so fast and efficient. All in small sizes, and this portions were huge!! Also they provide such lovely containers for the food, which are reusable. Crab ragoon was good and extremely well filled, however a little too much cream cheese and less of the crab. But crispy! Spicy salmon maki was a bit disappointing, didn't seem fresh and it didn't look to appetizing. However, it tasted fine but not spicy at all. Vegetable fried rice was excellent. Well cooked and not too much soy sauce like some places but the perfect amount. Something I would order again. Crispy egg noodles with chicken and veggies was great as well. Tasted really good and included lots of veggies and chicken. The general tai chicken was delicious! My only complaint is that I wish it was a bit crispier that's all. But I would definitely recommend this. And my absolute favourite and highly recommended dish is the beef in black bean sauce. This is just excellent; great flavours and great tasting. So I am obsessed with fried rice ... OBSESSED .... seriously. De Rice has the best fried rice in Hyde Park. That's the bottom line. The combination "De Rice Fried Rice" is delicious and has tons of all the different meats. But my go-to is the Shrimp Fried Rice which is equally delicious, generous on shrimp, and slightly cheaper than the combination. Hubby also loves the Chicken and Broccoli stir fry. For a buck extra I also get some crispy noodles to munch on all day/night. Crab Rangoon and egg-rolls are both perfectly acceptable and the Fried Chicken Wings are large and quite good. Best part is that they are consistent. Everything tastes like it should, every time you order. The delivery guys are great - friendly and super-quick. A note on the competition: Nicky's has it's moments, but is WAY overzealous on the soy sauce most times. Not worth the risk. Wok 'n Roll is fine for a cheap lunch special, but you have to eat everything while it's hot because, much like McDonald's fries, after 15 minutes or so, it turns into packing peanuts. read more

OMIGOD! Fresh Sushi on the South side!! This is a little tiny, hole-in-the-wall take-out joint -- you'd pass it right by if you didn't know any better. But they've got a full Maki menu in addition to the usual Chinese take-out fare, and their food is MUCH tastier than the usual Chinese joint. (The Mongolian Beef is my favorite, when I'm not scarfing down the Rainbow or Dragon Maki, that is...) Great variety, great prices, dishes made to order (spicy or not, veggie only, etc.), AND they deliver ---if you happen to be between 39th St & 63rd st, and east of King Drive. De Rice should put Nicky's and Wok N Roll out of business. It's quite good, in relative terms - i.e., given its location, Hyde Park, and thus its meager competition. Each crab rangoon was over-stuffed with cheese-crab filling - a problem I wish I had more often. The General Tao's chicken was hot and crisp, with fresh red and green peppers, and sauce with character (unlike the mystery goop at Nicky's). To repeat, all of my praise is to be understood in relative terms. The Singapore Vermicelli was amazing, but I don't have anything with which to compare it, which is a shame because it was even better than the Gen Tao's. On the other hand, if you've ever experimented with a noodle stir fry and curry powder, the dish will ring familiar, which makes it disappointing to some. The delivery was super fast. After several orders, it is worth noting that the dishes are hit and miss. The mango beef is very good, as is the black pepper beef. My roommates love the dumplings. The watermelon smoothie is delicious. Yet, the garlic lovers dish is mediocre (despite fresh ingredients and real garlic, which I usually love), and most of what comes in the 2-person combo special is hard to eat. The eggrolls have a strange chalky taste, and, despite tasting okay, the spare ribs have a funny smell which indicates that they have been frozen for too long. The strawberry chicken is a failure. Hyde Park finally has decent Chinese take-out (it always did, i just didn't realize it). Compared to the competition, De Rice is a Hyde Park standout, my criticisms notwithstanding. read more

De Rice is the best (cheap) Chinese food outside of Chinatown in Chicago. I've been to the physical store on 47th, although with delivery only $3.00, I've more often bought massive quantities of food to sustain me over the week. Every time I order from them, I get the Jumbo Chicken Fried Rice, which is a steal--that alone is two meals'' worth of food (the Pineapple Chicken fried rice uses the pineapple, as opposed to soy sauce, to provide flavor, which isn't very effective). The scallion pancake is best in my opinion without meat, and I've begun calling the nameless sauce it's served with Crack. I've had some misses here, the Singapore noodles among them (even though my boyfriend loved it, so your mileage may vary), but I've always been incredibly satisfied with my meal. Other recommendations: Broccoli in Garlic Sauce, Eggplant in Szechuan Sauce, Crab Rangoon (if you don't have to move in the next 12 hours), and Peking Duck. The black mushrooms with baby cabbage was one of my least favorite dishes, but it was probably just because I wasn't familiar with the taste of that particular (gamey) mushroom. read more

I enjoy this restaurant for many reasons. They are quick, the food tastes great and it is conveniently located in the Kenwood area. I thoroughly enjoy the hot pepper shrimp plate- shrimp, jalapeño peppers, onion and red and green bell peppers in a spicy brown sauce. Yum! The sauces are a little watery. I the hot mustard and the sweet and sour sauce could be a little thicker. I'm not sure if they make there own or not and maybe that's why it could be a little watery.
