I am not an easy hair client. I come with a scalp scar that has to accounted for with my short hair cut and have a very specific blonde shade I want my bleached hair toned to. I have to admit that I considered giving De Stijl 4 stars instead of 5 solely based off of what I paid ($75) but I DID check their site beforehand and I had a general idea of what it would cost so it was honestly something that should not have surprised me upon check out but it did. For reference I only got a wash,cut & style so if you're looking for something more than this, be prepared to pay more than $75. I scheduled my appointment with Sean who owns the place with his wife and honestly I couldn't be more thankful that he was the one who did my hair. I showed him a couple photos of what I wanted and he gave me exactly that. I am VERY skeptical about who cuts my hair and I honestly would rather pay more to ensure someone does exactly what I want to my hair than pay less and get a hack job lol Sean was kind and incredibly attentive throughout my entire time with him. He took his time and asked how I felt about what he'd done and I really appreciated that. I explained my hair situation to her (dead straight hair without layers) and what I was hoping to achieve from this haircut (layers so when I curl it it has body) and she not only did a great job at cutting my first ever layers, but also taught me how to curl my hair. My experience here was amazing, I was paired with Kristina L! She was kind and made sure we achieved the specific looked I wanted! She also told me a bit about what would look best with my hair/growth type and let me know my options for layers, etc. The whole experience was fantastic and my hair has not looked this good in a long time. The area is stylish and parking is easy, there is street parking right in front. She also provided me with a cup of tea and she offered water as well. Today was relaxing and very much needed! Aryn is very savvy about curly hair so I felt comfortable giving her the reins to my unruly mop. During the appointment she gave me MANY great tips and tricks about working with my hair. She listened to me and what I wanted and she helped me find a way for it to WORK for my hair. Booked a very last minute Brazilian with Jenna Hope and she graciously accepted! When I arrived, I realized I had booked incorrectly for a different permanent smoothing service but Jenna was flexible with me and talked me through what service would give me the results I was looking for (straighten a loose perm that was no longer wanted). My existing balayage (done by someone else at another salon) was also looking a little brassy so I asked Jenna if she could do a tone for me as well, which she did perfectly! Brazilians do take a long time but Jenna made it go by quickly. 3 weeks later, I still catch my hair in a reflection and think "Jenna really did a fantastic job!" Would so so highly recommend Jenna!! I used to see Aryn here. I come in from out of town and hadnt be able to get to pdx bc of covid. I didnt know she had left the salon. I wrote to De Stijl and attempted to set up an appointment. I needed to find a new salon and it wasn't easy during COVID. I wanted a place I felt safe during this time. This place in amazing! They are upholding standards of keeping the salon safe and clean by, contacting your stylist before entering to avoid having people inside when not necessary, temperature checks when you come in, hand washing that you and your stylist do before beginning and continual sanitization when moving to different areas of the salon. I have really fine, thin hair. Before my visit at De Stijil, I had yet find a stylist that would help me figure out what the hell to do with it. Nothing worked. You name it, I tried it. As a result, I either wore my hair up in a pony tail, or paid a s*it ton of money for extensions to fake like I had *real* hair. I finally decided to take a break from extensions, which ultimately resulted in my hair looking like "Smeagol" from Lord of The Rings. Enter Aryn. She listened to me, learned about my hair, and gave me honest feedback about would and would not work. She was so attentive and present. I felt heard, and understood. I was grateful to get a last minute appointment for a balayage and trim. The kind woman on the phone found an AM spot on Kristina's schedule. Upon arrival, I told her I wanted it to be subtle with no bold golden/yellow tones rather neutral brown tones. Kristina very blatantly told me that she wants to use foils vs doing a balayage. And, when I tried to ask questions to understand, especially because there's a price difference, she told me "there comes a point when I don't let the client choose because at the end of the day I'm the one who knows what I'm doing". At this point, I should've just left. I've never met a hairstylist so disrespectful. We used the foils..... it's exactly what I didn't want. Very dramatic, bold bright blonde highlights vs subtle sun-kissed brunette. The color job itself isn't awful.... it's just not me, nor what I wanted. I understand people have bad days... I'm just appalled by the service I received. Overall, the salon is fine... but based on friends referrals, I would ask for Jenna and avoid Kristina. Unless you want to pay $400 for 6 hrs of passive silence and everything you did not want. read more

I came into Portland fresh off the trail from a ten day hiking trip. I began said hiking trip with waist length hair and ended with hair much, much shorter. While on the hiking trip, my unruly long hair became too much to handle and I ended up cutting it off with a minuscule Swiss Army knife. When I arrived in Portland, my hair was ragged and I was forced to wear the beanie of shame until I found a salon to fix my natural disaster. I called several salons and they were all booked for the day, but when I called De Stijl, they miraculously told me they could fit me in that evening. I was their last appointment of the day and it was much past their stated closing time. Despite this, they were still very amicable and patient with me. I showed the stylist pictures of what I wanted and told them of my peculiar situation. They shaped up my trail hair into a great pixie cut and I couldn't be happier. De Stijl takes their time when cutting your hair and doesn't skip over any details, even if it is two hours past their stated closing time and the stylist secretly wants to already be home just as badly as you do. As a former stylist myself, I'm SO happy with the cut Sean gave me today! I feel like I did a terrible job explaining what I wanted (it was 15 minutes into my vacation week and I was completely burnt out), but he gave me exactly what I was going for! My pixie cut feels amazing and he texturized my super-dense hair perfectly. Not only was the execution great, but his personality was genuine. Recently, I finally decided to go blonde once again, and so after doing some salon research, was surprised to see they had moved to Portland! Sean was awesome, and INCREDIBLY meticulous. I came in with a very DIY ombre, so first he had to strip the color dye I had put in. He followed that up with hand painting lightener to get me to the level needed for the ice blonde I wanted. A few different toners later I got a beautiful Brigitte Bardot blonde. Granted, that was no easy feat, but he had no problem staying open late until my hair was finished. I recently moved to Portland from the Boston area over a year ago and have been struggling to find someone who can cut curly hair. Moving is tough as the water is different, the environment, etc. I have been to at least 4 salons in the Portland area and was having no luck. I looked up a great hair care line - Arrojo - and this salon was associated with their products. I figured that this could be the one. I made an appointment and headed over to see Aryn. I was filled with hope and a dose of hesitation. I was so delighted! Aryn was so friendly and knowledgeable. I learned so much - she definitely knows what she is doing and how curly hair works. Not just one-size-fits-all curly hair but understands the difference among fine, curly hair, and coarse, frizzy hair and how to cut, tame, and style the curls. She spent so much time taking care of me and my curls. They needed the love, for sure. I was so happy to have my curls back! I have so missed them, and Aryn works with my low key styling approach (I have a toddler and a 9-month old). You can tell that they care about clients and about hair. The light in their salon is phenomenal. The sky lights let in lots of natural light - which Aryn pointed out is needed for coloring hair. I have since convinced my Mom to go for a style, cut, and color when she is in town this June. I raved and raved so much about Aryn that my Mom is looking forward to it.
