Wanted to update-- The owner contacted me almost immediately after I posted this review. She was very understanding and issued a refund. Small potatoes compared to walking around looking like, well, like someone that I am not, for months. I understand this is a job like any other and we are all entitled to a bad day or an occasional misfire. But yeesh one bad cut can really have an adverse affect on a person's well-being for a long time. Usually love this place and have had some great haircutters, but my last hair cut I asked for what I always get: long layers, a little face framing and specifically NOT shaggy. I thought my hairstylist and I were on the same page and she had my idea in mind, but when she showed me the final cut it was tons of layers, and way too shaggy. I expressed this to her and she reassured me that it may look that way after the haircut but should look less shaggy over time. She told me to come in if I wanted anything changed after the cut, but too much cut off can't be changed. Having showed her specific photos of what I wanted, I'm incredibly disappointed with how it turned out. My hair was also not fully blow dried and I left with it partly wet. Despite my hair being dead and damaged before, it looked way better before the cut. Usually a big fan, but upset with my most recent cut, especially since I paid almost $30 extra for having hair below my chest, which added almost no time to the cut, which was not fully rushed, but not given enough thought to. For over $115 for a haircut, very disappointed. read more

Ended up getting a cut that was nothing like I asked for "shoulder length or a little shorter" (eneded up more of a chin length). & my sylist didn't make me feel as she was interested in me as a client and even didn't finish styling or even drying my hair after the cut? After reading all of the yelp reviews and stylist bios for Ginger Salon I finally decided to entrust my long hair to Nicole. I was not disappointed as she's helped me go from long layers to sweeping bangs and even added some pops of color in the last two years. I've never really written a review like this before. I really like this salon and its stylists, but I really disliked what they did with my hair. The first time I went I saw Joy - super cool gal who seemed really knowledgable about hair. But instead of bringing me back to blonde, I left with a pretty weird hue of orange (and the other stylists kept saying how beautiful the color was). Ok - maybe I was seeing things and I'd warm up to it. A few days passed and I was like whoa, ok I really do have ORANGE hair. I've had a few weird dye jobs in my life, but I've never done anything about it. But this one was embarrassing. So I made an appointment to have it fixed. They were super sweet and got me in really quickly with Stephanie - who was also really nice and also seems super knowledgable. She toned down the orange and brought me back to blonde - but where there was once dimension, now it was just one flat color. She also added a really dark color to my back and sides to cover up the orange, and now it looks like my head has been sprayed with that dark hair spray that bald guys use. It's a super harsh line between the blonde and this intense dark color (that's darker than my natural color), and I look a damn fool. Rather than go back for a 3rd correction, I'm going to go somewhere else and hope my hair doesn't all fall out from all this dying. In an effort to not totally break the bank, I called and asked for a refund which they promptly gave me. I think that move held a lot of integrity, and for that, I give 4 stars. Even though my hair sucks, the staff is really nice and their way of doing business is good. read more

I've been going to a salon to get my hair done for 20+ years, and I had never had a horrible experience...until last week. I had going to the same stylist for the past couple of years, and loved the rockin' haircuts she gave me. I always felt like there was bounce and wind in my hair after leaving the salon. Of course, that could be because I was hopping on one foot while pointing a fan in my face, but still. She took a leave of absence, and recommended that her clients see another stylist at the same salon. Just recently I went to get a trim, and made an appointment with the recommended person. She was really cool, and we had a great time talking while she cut my hair. Sadly, I went into that chair a whole person, and came out looking like Carol Brady. That's not an exaggeration, I quite literally had that hairdo. I've never been fussy about my hair, I've gotten 'meh' cuts and dealt with this. This was different. I got emotional. I cried. I cursed my bad luck. I wrote a letter to Congress about it. I wouldn't have cared so much had I not had a pretty important work function the next week. Unless it was with Alice and Mike, this cut wasn't going to work. I searched the internet for "fix bad haircut Portland" and Ginger Salon came up a few times. I read the Yelp reviews, and made an appointment with Nikki. Let me just say that this woman is a hair goddess. Pros: * She is friendly and cool. Time flew by! * She asked me a lot of questions about my lifestyle, products I use, etc to get an idea of what kind of cut would work for me * She never badmouthed the other stylist, and just worked to fix the problem * She turned a hairDON'T into a hairDO * Reasonable pricing for a great cut Cons: * I'll never be as awesome as she is I also want to give props to the salon itself because it's in a great location, and the inside is cute. It used to be a barbershop so it has that comfy, community feel that I love. Parking is easy, and they get you in and out in the time promised. I'm ditching the old place in favor of this one. If you're looking for a new stylist, suffered at the hands of an overzealous one, or just like looking fine as hell, you'll want to check out this salon. read more

Ohhhh, hair. It's a musical. People pay for more of it, less of it, straighter or curlier versions of it, different colors of it. Chris Rock made a documentary about it. I've cried and cheered over it. You can tell which decade a photo is from just based on the hairstyles in the photo. It's really hard to put this sometimes-fro-sometimes-frayed hair into someone's hands. Especially when they are new and you're going for a drastic change. I often get the urge to go get a haircut late at night or randomly on the weekend. I hadn't had a haircut since September, because I had no idea what I wanted to do with it. I was also in the process of losing weight, so I wasn't sure which cut would suit my face (apparently, I lose & gain weight in my face like no other). I've wanted bangs the last 5 or so times I've had my hair cut, but all of them told me not to do it. Stephanie was the first person that listened to me and asked me about my hair routine to help me make the decision. It helped that she had a fringe, too. I walked in and I was the only person in the salon the entire time. I got a wash and condition with a massage. She trimmed my hair, added blended layers, twisted my hair with product and put me under one of those futuristic relaxing hairdryer bubbles. I nearly fell asleep. She dry cut my bangs and it wasn't scary at all. I went for what I wanted, and ended up with bangs. I haven't had bangs since 6th grade when chola bangs were all the rage. Before that, I'm pretty sure my mom gave me bowl cut bangs. These have been rather easy to maintain, and I'm going to say that all of the other hairdressers were wrong. Neenerneener. read more

I'm 56 years old, and this is the best color treatment I have ever received. She listened to me and proceeded to foil my hair with blond highlights and color. It all blends so beautifully and looks so natural! Its been over 3 weeks since I've had my hair done & I look at it every day and admire what a great job she did!! Moving to a new city and having to replace all your service providers can be very intimidating, but I've struck gold with Ginger Salon. I'm a ginger, and Deanna crushed my hair color. I've never been talked to so knowledgeably about the color of my hair and what it needed. The color is amazing, the cut feels great, AND she managed to both straighten my hair, and give it volume only using a Dyson blow dryer and a round brush. I was AMAZED! While I've had great experiences at Ginger on Fremont before, my last appointment could only be described as disappointing. I had an appointment at 8:15 pm, the only time I could manage with my work schedule. When I first arrived, my stylist was friendly but less than talkative. She barely asked me any questions or tried to make conversation. I understand it was later in the day, but service should be consistent no matter the time of day. This was extremely different than my appointments before, when the stylists would really try and get to know me. That definitely did not happen this time. While my stylist did ask me what I wanted with my hair, instead of giving me new shape, she simply trimmed, leaving my layers extremely short and my base longer than I would've wanted. Near the end she didn't even finishing blow drying my hair, saying it would add frizz. I left the appointment with damp hair only 20 minutes later, really having an unsatisfactory experience. Once my hair did dry, at home, I really disliked the uneven look she had given me and regretted going at all. I even found tons of split ends she hadn't taken off at the ends, leaving my hair still damaged. Now I'm waiting for my hair to grow back out to hopefully change its look. But I know I'm not having that stylist again. The only reason for the three stars is I've had fantastic experiences before, where appointments take over an hour with great conversation, and have to account for those. Overall, this appointment was an outlier but I felt I had to share so others know it could happen to them. No matter the time of day or age of the client, the experience should consistently be exceptional. This time it was not. read more

Confession: I dislike getting my hair cut. I REALLY dislike getting my hair cut with someone new. Having read all of the reviews, I landed on Emily for my very long, thick, curly, greying mass of hair. After 10 minutes of "chair stress" I realized that she knew her stuff and I stopped trying to direct the process. Emily was perfect - figured out my hair texture, etc. and cut off enough to give my hair a good cut . . . that was styled well for my face shape. I finally found my favorite hair salon in Portland. For some context, my hair is wavy, thick, dry, and generally unruly. This is the first salon I've been to in Portland where I'm fully happy with my haircut and feeling confident about it. I decided to treat myself to a haircut after a few months. Ginger Salon has great reviews (I can see why!) and I wanted to try this place out. I booked my appointment with Emily after asking who might be good for curly thick hair on Yelp. I also loved her bio on Ginger Salon's website. She talks about her struggles in the past with having curly hair and I instantly related to her. Walking in, this salon is small. Two chairs and one hair washing station. It's cozy and artfully decorated with various hair products and tiny cat figurines on top of the products. I normally feel awkward talking to my hair stylist, but Emily was so easy to talk to. She was lively, sweet, and great at conversation. We talked the entire hour and I genuinely enjoyed our conversation. My hair cut was just excellent. I told her that my goal is to wear my hair down without it being too puffy and unruly. Emily gave me tips on how to treat my wavy hair to make it less frizzy and did a great job not only as a hair dresser, but a hair educator. It's been two days since my haircut and my hair looks so much healthier. I've even started to wear it down and I think it looks great. I'm so glad I tried this place out. Went in for a haircut with Stephanie. Was super nervous because I've had A LOT of bad luck with hair stylists. Brought in ideas of exactly what I wanted. Stephanie made me feel right at ease and even though we talked a lot, she never got distracted from my hair (Something that's happened to other stylists in the past). By the end, she had attained exactly what I had asked for and more. My hair had lacked shape and was blunt and made my face look larger (from a previous bad cut) and she worked her magic to make the shape fit my face, and it was a drastic difference. It just looked nicer and laid better against my face. And she didn't even change the length all that much. It was really the cut I had been asking for with the last stylist I saw who botched it, a mild shag. I haven't washed my hair yet to see what that's like, but I did play with it a bit as I always do and curled it with a straightener and it curled like a dream (I have naturally wavy hair). So far I'm pretty happy with it and have already made future appointments to see her again. Def recommend Stephanie! Thank you Stephanie for giving my hair shape and life again! read more

I so wanted to love my haircut. I just moved here, and with that comes the dreaded "trying to find a new hair stylist", which is a painful task. and at first, everything seemed fine. She was excited about my hair and I was excited to see what she could do. Just a little about me - I have finer hair but a lot of it, which tends to have a little bit of a wave in it. My hair was very bluntly cut before, just bangs and one length on the ends. I am the type to just wash my hair and go, and don't like a lot of maintenance. but as she started cutting, I could tell it wasn't sitting right. Something about the texture was off, and especially in my bangs. With my hair type when you add a lot of layers it can end up looking uneven instead of just textured, and that's what happened here. I wanted to give it some time as I know it takes a bit for your hair to settle into the cut. But it still doesn't look right a week later. I'm not quite sure how to describe it, but I think my hair is trying to turn into a yield sign. I thought about calling but I think in this instance it's probably best to just let it grow out. PROs (and why it was hard to write this review) Everyone was so lovely and nice and welcoming! and they offered Fresca and drinks, which I very much appreciate. The salon is very cute and small, and it feels like they offer a ton of personal attention and detail. The Kevin Murphy products they use are great and not super scented either, which for someone who is allergic to seemingly everything, is also wonderful. The location is also awesome and it wasn't hard to find parking. But in my case, I guess I'm still on the hunt for a hairstylist. read more

I am new to Portland and was hesitant about finding a hairstylist that was trustworthy as well as excited to try new styles. After several consultations with other salons, I finally found Ginger Salon and booked an appointment with Stephanie Grelle! She is AMAZING! My hair went from boring, dry and lacking life to a very low maintenance, bouncy, lustrous cut! I AM IN LOVE WITH MY HAIR ALL OVER AGAIN! It takes a lot for me to love a cut, especially since I have had bad luck in the past with previous cuts but this one was definitely worth it. I feel like a new person. Stephanie was kind and funny, and also willing to be honest about what type of hair cut would frame my face better. She took time with the cut as well as made sure I was satisfied and loving it. I would come here again just for her. If anyone wants a hair style that completely rocks their year, book with STEPH! Only thing I would change would be a bit more of an easier flow to book with stylists here, it took me about 4 weeks to be able to see her, their online booking is filled insanely fast, with about one option a month to see a stylist at your convenient time. Hair Color consultation is quite confusing too, one stylist said they could do the color I requested and another said she wasn't quite sure, so in terms of color, wasn't quite sure how to review the salon... made me feel a little uneasy about hair color here... I have anxiety around (bad) hair cuts so I usually end up procrastinating getting it cut. When I finally got around to it, I was so glad that I chose Ginger Salon. Had such a great experience getting my haircut by Nikki - she was warm, personable and took her time cutting my hair. Sometimes it takes a few weeks for me to like my haircut, but this time, I loved how my hair looked the day I got it cut and the second day wash, which honestly doesn't ever happen. I didn't catch his name, but the receptionist was also incredibly friendly as well and very patient with questions when I called to schedule an appointment.
