Everyone is very friendly. The receptionist always offers me a drink. The salon is very clean. With the salon under new ownership, I noticed the bathrooms now have hand towel and not paper towels, which was a very nice addition. Josh cuts all our family's hair and does an exceptional job! Apparently Michelangelo once said that his David sculpture was already inside the marble - he just had to release it. That's pretty much Joshua's approach when it comes to hair. He's a master. New in town my first time at the salon. It was amazing! Cassie gave me a short haircut that was just outstanding.

Great place to go, if you don't want a haircut... My haircut appointment this morning was cancelled less than an hour before the appointment time. I understand that things happen, but this is the fourth time they've cancelled an appointment on short notice in the last 6 months or so. One time they cancelled because the online schedule showed a person who no longer worked there, a second time because a person that worked there wasn't actually in on the day appointments were available online, a third time because someone went on vacation. None of those times were they able to re-schedule me for the same day. I've never had this many cancellations at any place I've frequented before. On top of that, the door to the business has to remain locked because of safety concerns. Yet the cuts are pretty expensive, even for Portland. $60 for a man's short cut, but usually more for any experienced haircutter. Sadly, I've had some good cuts here, but won't go back because it's just too much trouble to actually get a haircut at this salon. read more

I have never had a worse experience at a salon before. I was recommended to see Kasandra because she is a fashion colorist and I have a halo of bleach/lavender around my head that was grown out and needed to be touched up. I asked for my grow out to match the rest of my hair that was already bleached and for a lavender color to be placed over. I left the salon that day with an orange halo around my head in all the spot the stylist lifted with bleach. I called the salon the next day and they scheduled me to come in a week later so the stylist could fix it. At my second appointment I saw the stylist and she did not take accountability for anything. Instead I was blamed for washing my hair the day after the appointment (even though that would not have made my hair orange) and it was my fault I didn't tell the stylist to lift my hair to more than a level 9. I originally asked the stylist to match what my color was lifted to before and I do not think as a client I should know the color levels and have to tell the stylist what number to lift to. If my hair is visibly lifted to platinum then the grow out should also be lifted to platinum. The stylist said she lifted to a level 9 and that was all she needed to do to have the purple stick on (even though the purple did not stick to the lifted parts of my hair that she bleached). She didn't agree that she needed to lift my hair more. I do not understand why she thought it was ok to lift my grow out to a different level than the rest of my hair. I was so uncomfortable by the way she spoke to me and the fact that I was being blamed for how my hair turned out. I went to the receptionist crying because I wanted to leave and I was uncomfortable with the stylist touching my hair again. The receptionist was kind and convinced me to stay and have the stylist try to fix it. At the end of everything my hair was a little better but still wasn't fixed. She still did not lift my grow out to a platinum. My grow out is bleached inconsistently. The lavender that was applied is blotchy and uneven. I also left the salon soaking wet because water had gone all the way down my back soaking my sweatshirt and the top of my jeans. After everything the stylist did not apologize once. I am beyond devastated and will be going to another salon and stylist to try to salvage my hair. read more

I just moved to Portland in early April of this year, and was soooo ready for a new almost-post-pandemic cut and style, an update on my look, and a friend recommended Gold + Arrow to me. It's within walking distance of my work, so I checked out the website, chose a stylist, and made an appointment. I am thrilled to find this beautiful salon, and I am very happy to have found Marita, my new hair stylist! I chose her from the menu of stylists because I noticed she is originally from Chicago, where I grew up. I just liked her energy, and had a good feeling about her. I loved everything about this experience - the precautions the salon takes, the big beautiful open space, and most importantly, Marita. She's friendly, warm, and was very open and helpful with good grounded suggestions about what she saw my hair doing next. I immediately trusted her, which is a great feeling to have about the person standing over your hair with scissors in their hand, lol. I've never written a review i'm my life, but my experience here warranted one. I showed my stylist pictures of my hair from earlier this year, proof that the shape and cut I want can indeed be done on my hair. Instead I was sat in the chair for nearly 3 HOURS and by the end my hair barely looked any different and the shape was worse than what I came in with. I was then rushed out of the salon and the door was locked behind me before I could even ask my stylist to change it. The worst part is that I was charged around $150 for essentially a trim that somehow took 3 hours. I called them back the next day and they did not answer nor return my voicemail. Would stay clear of this place, they seem to care more about their appearance and aesthetics rather than quality cuts and experiences. read more

Courtney's curly cut has actually changed my life - sounds dramatic but it's not considering how much hair is a part of your daily life!! It's been weeks and I am still awestruck by the job done. For context I am the kind of person that stays away from salons out of fear and past negative experiences, thick wavy/curly hair and nobody seems to cut it right. This cut/experience changed everything for me! Courtney took time unlike anyone ever has before and catered very meticulously to my specific hair pattern. The results are outstanding for me. I went into Gold + Arrow Salon to have a haircut. I didn't know that the front door would be locked when I arrived. I had to knock on the door and tell the counter person who my service was with before Schmoopie and I were admitted. I waited a few minutes for the hairstylist to get ready. I was given a short glass of water. Schmoopie waited for my service to finish on the sofas by the front door. I noticed that most of the other women were much older than me. Over half of the women have silver or grey hair. I was the only African American woman to get a service here on that afternoon. Schmoopie parked around the corner. There is an outlet for water on that block.... and the water dripped (it was a slower drip) onto my hair. The hairstylist complained that part of my hair was wet after the service. She told me before that she doesn't like "touching wet things." I didn't get a shampoo... because Schmoopie and I had other things and tasks to do that afternoon. I got a haircut only. After I paid... I noticed that my voice was hoarse. The music in the Gold + Arrow Salon was too loud. I had to be louder because the hairstylist wanted to talk to me. I typically don't mind talking to people... except when the atmosphere is such that the noises or sounds are too loud. I sometimes tell people.... when the noises or sounds are too loud... "it's too loud for me to think properly..." as a joke. I'm guessing though that Gold + Arrow is going for a "hip or modern vibe" and therefore the music (which was "club music" was loud on that afternoon). I'm not sure why... the music was so loud. The service wasn't expensive.... but because I have long hair I paid more than I would at another hairstylist. Every hairstylist bases their pricing from their experience and their time, and labor involved... (which skill set they are employing during the service). I was quoted $130.00 before the service. Because the haircut took a little bit longer... the hairstylist walked away (from her station) for a few moments during the haircut to get me a glass of water... I was in Gold + Arrow for a little over 45 minutes. Schmoopie says it's not a good neighborhood anymore. I watched the local news recently... and the reporter said that there's more PPB (that's Portland Police Bureau) officers walking in downtown. This salon is a little too far from my condominium. I located a different hairstylist who is closer to my condominium. read more

Ok so let me tell you about LANA, i.e. Color Goddess/Hair Magician. I booked a color correction at Gold + Arrow for the first time last Saturday, and the first amazing point was that Lana texted me the day before to touch base on my expectations and inspiration pics. She helped adjust my appointment to the right service and gave me an accurate idea of the cost range. I've never had such wonderful service from the get go, and needless to say I was excited for Saturday to roll around! Now, Lana had her work cut out for her. I've got stupid thick hair that in the last year was 1) ash blonde to dark brown balayage 2) bright red balayage 3) stupidly box dyed dark brown by me (which I readily confessed) 4) all fading out to a really awesome maroon circa 1990 secretary deal. I like to think I'm easy going, and totally understood we wouldn't be able to get to a cool ash brown balayage look without a series of appointments and a blood pact that I'd stay out of the hair dye aisle. After all, we all know Beyoncé wasn't built in a day. Happily she didn't have an appointment after me, because this hair goddess had to meticulously foil my hair for 3 HOURS, followed by another 3 HOURS of careful setting/rinsing/glossing/unicorn magic/styling. I worried about her blood sugar. I worried about her break times. I apologized profusely and even debated ordering an apology pizza. But that's all my neuroses because she was attentive, pleasant, reassuring and all around a great person to spend half a day with! The results? Mind blown. I'm not speaking in hyperbole. My hair has never looked so good! Gorgeous color! It exceeded my expectations by 300% and made me annoy all my friends by my posting of about 100 selfies...something I don't normally do in my thirties. There were a lot of heart emojis. I'm not ashamed. She followed my appointment by snapping photos, which she even sent me later by email and answered questions about a maintenance plan. Needless to say, I've finally found my person! KATIE = AMAZING BLONDE HAIR I've been DYING for the perfect cool blonde hair (for me) *all my life.*  I finally met the sweetest, caring, free spirit, who excels in making hair blonde.  My hair began as a level 6 ruby red, with recent touchups as a level 5 brown.  Thankfully my hair is pretty short, so we prepared for the worst (a dark blonde after toning), and hoped for the best. The consult was awesome.  Katie set **expectations** reasonably.  You can't guarantee anything with hair that has been colored (especially with red tones) when bleaching to blonde.   We had to work with my hair as a "color correction" because simply throwing bleach on my head wouldn't get the color to process, we needed foils over every thin section of hair - Once through just painting the color - Second time through, painting the 1/2 inch of virgin hair that had recently grown out.   We agreed to use Olaplex 1 in the lightener to strengthen the hair. I didn't shampoo my hair for a few days prior, simply rinsing and conditioning when in the shower.  This was to get the scalp slighly oily for the lightening process. I NEVER felt any tingles or burn during the process.  The morning of the process, I conditioned, rinsed, and didn't put any product in my hair, leaving it "clean" for Katie. About 3 hours after we began, she had all the foils on, and had painted all of the virgin hair as well.  Followed by rinse, bleach rinse, Olaplex 2, shampoo, toner (toning the originally virgin hair different from the previously colored hair), condition, and style. I was floored at how blonde she took my hair!  She achieved a Level 9 on the virgin hair, and 8 towards the ends. Our end goal is actually lighter than we got it (end goal: white blonde Level 10), and we're pretty sure we'll get to the end goal at the next visit.  Also, the hair is super soft and it doesn't feel dry!   SUPER happy! Katie's recommendations for aftercare: Shampoo as infrequently as possible (the hair is dry, imagine that). When shampooing, use a toning shampoo  -Matrix Brass Off recommended by her -Joico Violet Endure OK -Tigi Dumb Blonde Violet Toning Shampoo OK Rinsing hair daily with water (no poo), then using a conditioner is perfect. (bleached hair loves moisture)  -Don't use too much protein  -Paul Mitchell Forever Blonde Conditioner OK Weekly Treatment: Olaplex 3     OR Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Keratin Intensive Treatment is good too. She says no sooner than 4 weeks and no longer than 6 weeks for the next session.   Can't wait to see you again KATIE!!! read more

I just had my 5th appointment at Gold + Arrow so I feel like I can fully give an honest 5 star review. Two things about me: I have super thick hair that most stylist I've seen don't make time to handle properly and I have an unpredictable schedule, so it's difficult to book very far out in advance. Because I can't always book a month in advance each time I need a visit, I've had to bounce around to whichever stylist can help me at that time and all 3 stylist I've had at Gold + Arrow have been great. Lacey, Michelle and Joshua have all done an amazing job. The first time I came to G+A, I just come off a year of bad hair appointments and Lacy took the time needed to fix the very bad color jobs I'd previously had. If i could put 0 stars I would. The most unprofessional hair salon I have ever dealt with- I was in town for a wedding with an appointment the day of the wedding for a blow out at 1:00 pm. I had made the appointment weeks in advance. They called at 12:15 to say that the stylist was still with her customer whose hair had not processed correctly- and to come in at 1:40 this was cutting it close but I figured I was in kind of a desperate situation. At 1:15 they called once again saying that I would have to come between 2:00 and 2:30- when I asked "Taylor" the manager if she was sure the stylist could do the blow out at 2:30 - her answer was "well, no - unfortunately it will depend on the customer with the processing problem- could be maybe 3:00" Whaaaaat? I then asked if the stylist that i was booked with could possibly do my blow dry while the client was processing (I mean- really - 2 plus hours to process ?????). She said - and im not kidding " we never double book" when I replied that isnt that exactly what she had done - with me on the losing end? She then immediately gave me major attitude. Sadly i cancelled the appointment after that ridiculous conversation and did my own hair - it may not look great - but at least I didnt have to deal with that crew- here are my suggestions for Gold and Arrow: 1. Send the stylist that is still working on the customers processing situation back to beauty school! 2. Hire a new manager who at least can fake common sense- and enroll her in a "Miss Manners" class as well. Other than that -it was pretty epic!!!! read more
