I almost never give 5 stars on a first visit because for me, I reserve that for the truly excellent places that consistently outperform. If someone is going somewhere based on reviews it's nice to know that the higher ranked places are always excellent. I do make exceptions when a place is so good you just know that it is always going to be the case and that was the experience at Deacon's. I had the pork porterhouse. Best pork steak I've ever had in my life. By a lot, too. Served on a bed of grits with a nice tangy/spicy sauce and perfectly cooked. Moist, delicious and plentiful! We had the Oyster deviled eggs to start with some parker house rolls. A couple petite filets and a bone in ribeye rounded it all out. Drinks were very well made and they had Monkey 47 gin so clearly they know their stuff! Service was excellent, the atmosphere was casually elegant with kind of an industrial charm to it. Noise level was good. It was a perfect meal! So many choices here in Nashville but I think it would be hard to do better than Deacons. See for yourself! read more

Walking in, we were greeted by the sweetest hostess. She was incredibly warm, wished me a happy birthday, complimented us, and even took a few photos to help us celebrate. Unfortunately, that ended up being the highlight of our evening. Our server was inattentive throughout the meal. After opening our bottle of wine, he spilled some while pouring the first glasses and never returned to refill them. For a special occasion like a birthday dinner, the service felt lacking. My husband ordered the filet and thoroughly enjoyed it. I chose the Gulf fish special, but was disappointed to receive the tail portion. The mac and cheese was watery and lacked flavor--honestly, boxed mac and cheese would have been better. We finished with the flourless chocolate cake, which looked beautiful when it arrived, but it was so dry that we couldn't finish it. This was the most delicious birthday dinner I've had in many years. The food was absolutely delicious, the service was even more incredible, and the ambience of the restaurant is 10-Star. Everything was cooked perfectly as ordered. One of the best places in Nashville to go for a date night, birthday celebration, a professional business meeting luncheon, or just to enjoy some of the most incredible food in Nashville. I don't know why but I keep forgetting about this place, that's too bad because every time I visit I'm happily surprised with the outcome. The ambiance is typical steak house, you can get a glimpse of all the good meet hang drying, or sit by the window and do a little people watching. It's not the greatest steak house in Nashville, but I think you get a lot of bang for your bucks here. They are doing a great job hiring people here, there is a genuine warmth and welcoming atmosphere every time I have visited. I love a place that has prime rib on the menu and not just a special. The calamari was tough as leather and we ended with a cup of breading so that was a bit disappointing. The wedge salad was a large portion. We could have shared. Anyplace that has a blue cheese stuffed olive dirty martini is a place to go in my book. The multi-level restaurant is both impossibly elegant (with wine bottles and antique mirrors covering the walls) and whimsical (we were seated by floor-to-ceiling shimmering string lights.) Our waiter, Jared, was the perfect level of attentive. He knew the menu well & offered helpful recommendations. We ended up both ordering the bone-in-ribeye, per his suggestion, & it was divine. I was expecting this place to be top notch considering that every time my coworkers have came to Nashville, they like to eat here. The reason why I give it 3 stars is because the food was not worth the price. I ordered a petite filet and we all shared sides. I asked for medium and it was undercooked on one half of the steak and they over salted it. I could only eat half of the filet because it wasn't at all to my liking and I didn't want to be that person who returns their food. The other part was the sides. The baked potato was just ok. Nothing fancy and nothing I would order again. The Brussels sprouts were also something we couldn't finish and no one really touched because the flavor wasn't there. We had some shareable appetizers among the group (cornbread and succotash are the ones I can remember). Most of the group got steaks (it is a steakhouse after all); I ended up get the corn cacio e pepe, which was so good. I added chicken and it didn't need it, was just fine without. My family and I travel to Nashville several times a year, and we've always looked forward to dining at Deacon's New South. Unfortunately, our most recent visit a few weeks ago was quite disappointing. They were out of my daughter's favorite dish, and while my family received their meals promptly, mine arrived much later and when it did, it was the wrong order. By the time the correct dish was brought out, my family had already finished eating, and the food itself was mediocre at best. The one positive note was our waitress, who was very nice, attentive, and very apologetic about the situation. While we've had great experiences here in the past, this visit fell short, and with another trip to Nashville coming up soon, we'll likely explore other upscale steakhouse options. read more

From the outside it usually looks slow, but it actually has a nice, laid-back vibe -- definitely a spot you could grab a chill business lunch. We sat at the bar, and the bartenders made us feel uncomfortable by making comments after we ordered simple drinks (a Sprite and a Shirley Temple). Our food was dropped off without any follow-up and the overall energy from the staff felt like we weren't welcome. We went to Deacon's on Tuesday night. We started with a corn bread as an appetizer and honestly it was pretty good. It felts very authentic and full of flavor. We placed an order of a burger and a 9oz filet and we literally had to wait for over 50 min for the food to come, even though the place was not that busy, it was near normal operation. The burger was tasting weird, you expect better from an upper class restaurant, i was expecting a gourmet burger and I was presented with a below average burger. The steak was over cooked but it was edible. There were no wow factor. The highlight of the night was the Pinot noir from Maysara winery. One of our favorite dinner spots in Nashville! Deacon's is a really nice classy, yet still casual restaurant just a couple blocks from the hustle and bustle of Broadway. My wife and I have now been to Deacon's a couple of times and while we had very different experiences both times, we will most likely be returning anytime we are in Nashville and looking for a nice dinner! The first time we visited Deacon's we had found some reviews of it online and had reservations and plans for a nice night out. We were seated immediately and had a very cool table that actually had a view of the kitchen through the huge windows separating it from the dining room. It was very cool to watch how the team worked from relatively up close. The dining room area is set up nicely where it is a large area, but is somewhat separated by walls/stair/bar that make it feel a little more intimate. I do not remember everything what we had that trip, but I do remember the waiter suggested the cornbread and it was a very nice appetizer to get us started! The second time we visited Deacon's, we were just in Nashville for a quick weekend with no real plans or anything so did not have reservations. Gave Deacon's a call just to see if reservations were needed at the bar and they said it was first come first serve! Perfect! We got there relatively early and they led us to the upstairs bar area where there were a handful of tables for two as well. I did not even know this bar existed (there is a much larger bar downstairs in the dining room), but it is a really cool area and there are even views of the street from this floor. Our waitress was quick and very pleasant! We split the porterhouse steak which was cooked perfectly! We also shared the roasted potatoes and asparagus, all of which was more than enough for two people. The potatoes especially were fantastic, just crispy on the outside and sprinkled with a powered duck fat! A great spot for a casual yet fancy night out, and you will not be let down by the food! We will definitely be visiting Deacon's again in the future! read more
