My favorite restaurant in Worcester! My husband and I were in the mood for seafood and were able to check the menu at deadhorse from home. Love how chef features seasonal ingredients, like ramps, and celebrates the New England bounty. We ate softshell crab with ramp kimchi, arctic char in a beautiful coconut broth and a pretty luxurious lasagna made with shrimp and an herbed ricotta. The service at deadhorse is world-class and distinctly American -- old-school hospitable but unpretentious. Our server Patrick and the rest of the front-of-house team are always there when you need them. They are attentive to details like empty water glasses and crumbs, but also the more personal things like your name and favorite cocktail! read more

Good things first. Terrific food, pork chop on lentils sounds simple until you add deep fried kale and spices. Filet steak perfectly cooked with home made tiny potato chips. Desserts - imagine home made in-house really- chocolate and wait for it avocado...a WOW. Perfect balance of flavors and texture. Go just for this if you're in doubt. Service friendly and efficient well earned 20% tip. Entry experience from the manager was awful: at 6 pm with an empty room for you have reservations, wait (10 minutes) sit a bar, nonsense and silly. for a new restaurant - Dead Horse Hill far exceeded my expectations. Had 2 very delicious appetizers (foie gras & fried chicken) for main course the salmon and wygu equally amazing and then the brioce donut for dessert. I am a raving fan of Dead Horse Hill. This restaurant is really slow. The food is FANTASTIC and out of this world. My family and I went in, to pass time before we went to a wedding. We sat down, with a large-ish party, and they sat us. They then proceeded to serve another table whom of which had a reservation. They sat down, after we had ordered, and then they ordered about 15 minutes after us. They got food before we did, and left before us, making it quite apparent we were going to be late. We asked if they could hurry, for we were strict on time. Didn't happen. read more

There's something to be said about the foodie paradise Worcester is becoming. It seems that every week a new restaurant is opening and I'm more than willing to go and see what new creative dishes are being served. I was excited to visit Deadhorse Hill 6 days after they opened. I looked at their menu and although there were no prices and many of the dishes had fancy shmancy names to it I wanted to go. Google clarified the confusions I had about some of the appetizers, which they called "small" and some of their entrees "large." I made a reservation for 4 well in advance with no trouble at all. When we arrived there I was pleasantly surprised with the surroundings. I had previously gone to Ritual and found the space beautiful but too dark due to bad lighting and dark colors. This space is airy, they exposed the bricks and the wood is a light beautiful color. The chandeliers and light were beautiful so were the two paintings I saw. The wait staff was a hot mess. They looked unkempt and the person who was serving us had no clue about the many offerings and was too shy to effectively communicate with us. I actually felt bad for the girl, it seemed training was lacking. Another shock was the prices. Although I had done some research with their website I was surprised to see that the roasted chicken I wanted was almost $30. After the initial shock we ordered our entrees and waited....and waited some more. The waiters kept coming around to refill our glasses so that's about the only plus I'll give them. Many refills later and we were still waiting for our food and one of my friends was still wiping the water from where the waiter casually over spilled half his jug onto our table. 45 minutes into it I asked the waiter for an update of our food, she said it shouldn't take much longer. About an hour I asked the person that seemed to manage the restaurant and he didn't even apologize or nothing, he simply said (verbatim) "We did not expect this many people at once." I politely told him I had made a reservation but he didn't seem to care. Although my friends wanted to leave I suggested we give them 15 minutes more because it is a new restaurant and whatever they are trying to do they obviously did not prepare. At 1 hour and 30 mins I saw the same man and asked him. He seemed to get annoyed at me and his condescending tone was what sent me over the edge. I walked out. Let me say that I'VE NEVER done that at any restaurant. I have also never had that experience at any restaurant in Worcester, the states and countries I've visited. I was in astonished at the level of service. HOW IN THE WORLD would you not prepared for the amount of people? Here's an idea, how about making it reservation only like when The Hangover Pub opened (great amazing experience btw!), or maybe actually take care of the people that were excited enough for your opening and made reservation? I'm no restauranteur but I do have common sense! If I do have a subpar experience at a restaurant I usually give them another chance but not this one, this horse was dead even before starting up the hill. read more

This place is awesome. We've been looking forward to it's opening and we were not disappointed! Chef Jared has so much talent and passion for food. The menu is always changing and everything seasonal. Went there last night again, had amazing steak tartar, gnocchi with rock shrimp (delicious!!), best fried chicken ever! For main course we shared a whole fried sea bass with Thai style sauce and rice. The fish was so fresh, moist and cooked to perfection. Adam at the bar made excellent cocktails and was very friendly fun to talk to. Service was excellent. This is probably one of the best place you can eat outside of Boston. For some reason every time I come to this place on my lunch break I have a really hard time getting service. It seems like it takes forever to get a waitress. And for a person that only has an hour break waiting 15 minutes to give your order is not fun. It seems they dont really know what they are doing. VERY expensive for worcester standards. almost 20$ for two sandwiches for lunch. The only reason I add a third star is because they have some home made potato chips that are really good. read more

My husband and I went last night with my sister and brother-in-law after she'd heard numerous rave reviews. We were not impressed and probably wouldn't go back. We love the vibe at Deadhorse! The food is creative and delicious, the drinks are on point, and the staff is friendly and inviting.

What a gem! The staff was professional without being snobbish. The drinks were sophisticated, full of flavor and went right to my head. I went with oysters and the salmon tartar to start. The oysters were fresh and the salmon had a nice background of heat. The flank steak with egg, bacon, and beans was amazingly executed, so warm and familiar but not like regular restaurant food. The poached salmon was perfectly cooked and the rice packed a punch with morels and coconut milk(?). I the steak was comfort food, the salmon dish was a trip to the west coast. Desert was top notch and the coffee was not an afterthought. The beer and wine selection was limited but well thought out (most places offer too many choices) but the room was a little loud. I spoke to one of the owners and he was professional and very enthusiastic, I knew this was a new spot but I had no idea it was only open 2 weeks! What a find! read more

The term "farm to table", is pretty overdone these days, but these guys make it work. Stopped by for lunch and was blown away by the fried chix thighs with purple slaw and homemade pickles. Chicken was extra crispy on the outside. They soak it in their own buttermilk (a by-product of their own butter making process) so it's perfectly tender on the inside. Slaw and pickles were on point. Someone got the pastrami Reuben and said it was amazing. We had been undecided about getting the meatball sandwich, so Sean the owner brought over a few so that we could sample them (definitely next time). They get their produce from local farms, and their meats are all local and free range. They make everything from scratch, and if they source something like baked goods, it's from a great bakery that buys into the concept. Take a great bar and eclectic beer selection (all local), add a friendly staff, and top off with ownership that loves what they do, (talking to you Sean) and you have a winning restaurant that's worthy of the accolades they've been piling up. Our first visit to deadhorse hill was an overall enjoyable experience. Our meals and drinks were excellent, and you can taste the passion put into the kitchen and bar. With that said, they're definitely experiencing some growing pains on the service side. I'm not sure if they were short a bartender on a busy Saturday night (with multiple events going on downtown), but the bar service was almost inexcusably slow. While we were thankfully in no rush and thankful for the additional time for conversation, we could tell the bar needed some help. We arrived about a half hour early for our 6:30 PM reservation. We were guided by the hostess that if we wished to order a cocktail while we waited, we should do so through her, which we did a few minutes after our arrival. Unfortunately, we did not receive our drinks until about 6:25, and were seated around 6:35. We ordered a second round of drinks, a small plate and two large plates about 20 minutes after being seated. We received the small plate (the excellent Memphis-style ribs) about 15 minutes before our drinks finally arrived. This also required a couple checks by our server to confirm our drink order. I'm not sure if it was a function of the bar being backed up or lack of communication to the serving staff that caused the holdups, but it seems that the management should do a better job of stepping up to help (instead of greasing up the complaining party of middle aged women at the table adjacent to us with shots of rum). I'd like to return for dinner in the next 6-12 months to see how things have pulled together on the service side. If they can bring service up to the same standard as the food, deadhorse hill will be even more of a killer option in Worcester's growing downtown than it already is. read more

They were not accommodating and would not accept an order for a burger well done - was told that I should order something else on the menu that the kitchen staff would not make a well done burger. This was with a group of 10 people, so was a significant amount of business we were bringing. Was surprised at how much they were not able to accommodate - they even told another member of the team that they could get a well done burger. This place is great! They really have a unique solution to the dining experience question. I managed to secure a last minute Mothers Day Brunch reservation after someone cancelled. I couldn't believe the quality, quantity and ambience of the place. There were three in my party and we all ordered different items. We had three different pastries (sticky pecan bun, chocolate croissant, and strawberry rhubarb muffin - toasted) - they were amazing! Also three different entrees (pastrami omelet with greens, eggs Benedict and cinnamon French toast with REAL maple syrup) unbelievable! Top it off with sides of delicious bacon and home fries plus coffee and gourmet tea and it was a Mother's Day breakfast for the ages. My 93 year old mother loved it and anything involving change or something new can be an issue sometimes. She thought everything about it was spectacular. I found this place on line and was intrigued by the name - having grown up in Worcester and Auburn and knowing where Dead Horse hill is, I was intrigued. Our server, Patrick, told us the story and history of the building and the restaurant - have him tell you the tale - by the way, he was fantastic as well!!!!! I'll definitely be going back. My wife & son, Michael, had the pleasure of celebrating his birthday over dinner at Deadhorse Hill. Not only was the food exceptional, the service was impeccable. My wife enjoyed the rigatoni, perfectly aldente with a unique sauce infused with fresh herbs and sungold sweet tomatoes topped with fresh homemade ricotta. Michael loved his free range half chicken which was moist and perfectly seasoned. The romesco, almond sauce was fresh, complex and paired well with the chicken. The deserts were delicious and would be worth the trip on their own. Michael raved over his cocktail, "The Penicillin" . Food and drinks aside, the service will bring you back. It was refreshing for them to see such an enthusiastic and engaging staff! Every person they dealt with from waiter to bartender to owner was genuinely happy to serve them and explain how everything you are eating and drinking is prepared with details including locally bought, fresh products. I'm from CT here in Worcester to entertain clients. Not exactly sure how we ended up at Deadhorse Hill, but I'm glad we did. There was a movie convention of some sort, so the bar and restaurant were hopping. We had to wait 20mins for a table, but the bartenders pour really interesting ingredients, so we settled right into the scene. The wait gave us time to check out the architecture. High copper ceilings, exposed brick and dark hardwood floor all make for a rich, comfort vibe. Food was fantastic! We ordered the horse Hill chefs tasting dinner. All types of creative infusions of taste & texture. Favorites: mussels & mashed potatoes, fried spatzle, grilled creole lamb. Unbelievable. The owner Sean introduced himself & discussed several of our courses. It made us feel like regulars.
