Not what I expected when it came to a place for sushi. Umai is definitely more Korean influenced than Japanese influenced. That is not a bad thing at all, just putting it out there so people know what they are getting into. We came in today for lunch today and honestly, it took forever. When we got here they were not busy at all. One other customer besides us. It took an incredibly long time for us to get our appetizers (gyoza, two orders) [again, these were more like Korean yaki mandu than typical Japanese style gyoza] After that we were told it would be almost another 20 minutes before our entrees were done. The restaurant is small, but the environment is warm and welcoming, and the staff is incredibly attentive and friendly. My son ordered the Sushi & Sashimi Combo and the Sashimi Deluxe (yes, he has a big appetite!), while I had the chicken fried rice. While we were waiting, the itamae--the master sushi chef--surprised us with a few complimentary tastes of dishes. It was such a thoughtful gesture, and truly one of those moments where the culture, skill, and hospitality shine through. My son absolutely loved everything he ordered, and my fried rice was hands down the best I've ever had. It was authentic--light, flavorful, and not drowned in soy sauce like so many places do. This location is sort of oddly situated between an antique and consignment store with a dental place right next to it. People were visiting the two stores and ignoring the restaurant but I was hungry so stopped in for a snack. As there weren't other options around I didn't check out Yelp so didn't know what to expect. I walked in and the lady (owner)? was a bit brusque. Took her a few to get to me. I started to order and she got a pencil from elsewhere, shoved it at me, and walked away. I would have walked out at that point but I was hungry so I stayed. And I'm glad I did. I'll start with the good. All of the flowers and plants were beautiful, both outside and inside the establishment. And a few of the sushi rolls were good. The tempura appetizer we ordered was cooked perfectly but the textures of the potatoes they used were not so good and the sauce that came with it was flavorless. The tuna and salmon that were in the sushi were fresh. Here is the not so good.... We asked for whatever roe came on the sushi, to be on the side. We were told that was not possible and that we would have to order a side of it for $8....huh!?!? I'm not making this up lol. The miso soup was the worst I've ever had. The spider roll that we ordered had imitation crab. If your going to go through all the trouble of deep frying soft shell crab then put a little real crab in there. The fake crab ruined the entire roll. The nigiri tuna sushi we ordered was on so little rice that it couldn't be picked up with chopsticks. The rice didn't even stick together. It was a mess. We were served drinks in solo cups. The server and owner were friendly but also short on conversation and were far from being busy. This was just not a great experience. read more

Really great service!! The owner was very nice. We walked in around 6:30pm on a Tuesday night and it was pretty busy. We didn't have any reservations but we asked for a table for 6 because we were meeting here with my best friend's family. The lady seated us and so we waited. Well an hour later my friend ended up not making it. Luckily there were no other big parties that came in after us and when we told the lady that it was just going to be 2 of us for dinner, she wasn't upset. This is probably one of the greatest restaurants I've been to anywhere though! I really hope they can survive out here because their location seems out in the middle of smallstownsville of Deale, MD, but I hear they are very popular with the locals so I think they're safe! I decided to stop here for dinner on the way home from work. I was starving too. I was hoping to see an authentic Japanese sushi owned and operated establishment. Unfortunately, they are not Japanese, but in reality, it is very hard to find a sushi restaurant run by actual Japanese people. The service was very friendly. The owner, however, loudly takes orders over the phone in the restaurant's small dining room. Hard to have a quiet meal when this is happening. The food was pretty good. I had the unagi and chicken bento box with a Diet Coke. All in all I liked the presentation. The eel was great. Definitely the best part of the meal. The chicken was okay and the tempura was okay. Too much batter for my taste though. The price is pretty high. It ended up being 35 bucks with tip just for little ole me. Not cheap. If you are a southern Marylander, my suggestion would be Kodori in Waldorf. The food is just as good but not as pricey. read more

If you're looking for decent sushi without driving to Annapolis, this isn't a bad spot. It's pretty pricey for what you're getting, but after recently moving back to Maryland from Japan I am a little biased. The standard Philly and California roll are what you'd expect. However the dragon roll is on point, I highly recommend it. Going inside is a little confusing at first because all the plants block the view of the entrance but once inside it feels very cozy. If you get seated in the corner near the restrooms, you're basically in a storage closet with all the stuff stacked up in one corner. Check it out though, it is convenient nonetheless. read more

It's so beautiful on the patio and then cozy and inviting inside, the service is phenomenal even in the besuiest of a Friday when things were crazy busy, COVID regs cramped the regular flow and technology issues caused backups with orders and payment processing the waitress was so attentive and kind. And the owner, Ms Park, was a turbo charged delight on wheels and smiled and waved and wished us well on our way out as though we were her own family! I ordered the chicken Bento box and it was terrible for $25!!! Fried stuff was fried in old oil... there were food items I didn't even know what they were. One I think it was turkey and gravy, maybe it was chicken I have no clue. On item was 1 (one) under fried strip of a sweet potato, I think the another was a thick slice of a white potato that wasn't fully cooked and then partially fried. The crab Rangoon was not fried not sure it was cooked at all. I ate The sushi and it was just OK. I was hungry! I threw it all away! I won't be going back! I wish I would have taken a picture before I put it down the garbage disposal. read more

Inside is very small but it was nice being close to home. went in one day with my gf and waited 20 mins just to get drinks with hardly anyone in there. Was about to leave when an older woman came up to serve us . We normally write on the laminated menus with crayon so we thought it would be okay to draw on the back (after having been bored waiting for 20 mins). It wipes right off of the laminated menus no problem but as soon as the waitress saw we were drawing on them she yelled at us to stop like children and snatched the crayon from my girlfriends hand and walked away with our menus. Went here tonight for sushi and asian carryout, after debating the menu for five minute,s the owners wife got ready to take our order. fortunately she said that we would have to wait 40 minutes for something as simple as a california roll, I wanted bibimbap (god forbid). I was aghast at the wait time since we were there in the establishment. I told her no, we can't wait that long, we were with two kids. As we were leaving my partner asked if she could use the restroom, the woman said, NO Customers Only!!! I was again taken aback. I've eaten here before, they have the only sushi in town although everything on the menu is overpriced. I told the lady, guess what! We will never set foot in this place again. Today's takeout of bibimbap - beef in my dish was cold, hard and chewy and an extremely minimal 2 tablespoons at the most. The overwhelming quantity of sauce was very spicy (coughing fit with first bites) and predominated over the taste of everything else too heavily. The other bento box dish we ordered had the same issues with the chicken portion, the tempura was cold and the salad was a tired wilted, soggy mass. Was totally surprised that when I asked for low sodium soy sauce I was told I didn't need it for the sushi and they did not provide it!! I will suggest that much of the meal was pre made to have these multiple similar issues. Very disappointing. read more

So disappointed! I heard some great things about this place and we were very excited to try it out. Unfortunately, we didn't even stay long enough to order. We were greeted with a "sit over there". The smell was terrible. My family and I sat there for around 10 mins, before the waitress or owner walked over to our table and snatched a pencil (one they gave us for marking sushi on the order slip) right out of his hands and put down a glass full of colored pencils. Didn't even say a word and walked away. We hadn't even placed our drink order yet nor did we use the pencil to mark our sushi on the order slip. We got up and walked out. Service was terrible!
