    Sizzling steak. Average at best
    Andrew L.

Seeing rave Yelp reviews for Nova, we decided to venture over to Edgewater to see if we had a hidden gem nearby. We are very much Thai fans, and the possibility of a great Thai place with great sushi was sounded almost too good to be true. And it was. Perhaps it's the dearth of quality Asian cuisine here in the Annapolis area that has falsely produced such high marks for Nova, but we found our fare to be adequate at best. (Two from our dinner party opted for the descriptor of "meh") The ambiance is cute - clean, bright, with exceptionally friendly (and numerous!) waitstaff. Our servers were helpful and attentive and we had high hopes for the experience. We started with three sushi rolls: Edgewater, Yoda, and one other whose name escapes me . The rolls were good. Not earthshatteringly good - just solid. Like a dependable Chevy truck. We also tried the sizzling steak and the chicken pad Thai. Both were almost over sauced. The pad Thai had a nice sour note (a hallmark of the dish) but it almost felt like the noodles were swimming in the sauce and, in my opinion, the noodles began to break down as a consequence. The sizzling steak felt cloyingly sweet to me - but the others in the group were quite as put off as I was. Again - making the meal simply "fine" As much as we hoped to find that hidden gem - we found that we need to continue our search for Asian cuisine in the area

Had a great time here! Service was fast and my glass always had water. We ordered the shumai, gyoza, love boat for two, and a sushi lover. Sushi was fresh and loved the salmon! Would come again!

The food, service, and atmosphere were all great. We ordered crispy salmon rolls, salmon skin rolls, a yoda roll, a Green Bay roll, king crab roll(actually real crab), and a Philly roll. All were good except for the yoda and Philly roll, which were ok. The service was fast and our waitress refilled our waters frequently. The interior was nice and piano music was playing in the background.

    Shrimp General T'so's shrimp

I craved General Tso's shrimp, so I went back for a second time. This time, I decided to add an order of Shrimp fried rice. While the rice tasted good, I was very disappointed with the amount given for 18 dollars. I will admit that they put big-quality shrimp in the rice, but I should have been given more.

Posing with the sushi boat I barely touched

I will for sure be back! Customer service at this place was a one. We were greeted and seated immediately the sushi was wonderful. My husband ordered a love boat and I will just let him get it because he's been wanting a laptop that we came back to the mainland. Octopus on the boat it's really tasty. My Gyoza was cooked perfectly I also had some sort of some sushi that had eel on it. I can't remember the name but that was pretty tasty too. This is probably some of the best sushi I've had in a really long time! I definitely plan on visiting this place we we have our next night out!

I refrained from another drink and that was probably the best idea since the total bill with tip was over $100. And there definitely wasn't a happy hour discount. Kanpai is in a prime place along Rockville Pike, but depending on when you go you may find easy parking. (If you're not bothered about where to park, ignore what I just said.) Out front there's something that looks like a tuk-tuk or rickshaw. Tbh, don't know if it's theirs or the business next door. The restaurant itself is clean and elegant. Also, not as loud as some Korean BBQs (thinking of KPOT off of Randolph Rd), which is important if you don't like being overwhelmed by everyone else's noise. That is one big '+' in Kanpai's favor. The waiter was cool and very helpful. Because of him I now know what the thin meat slices are meant for (which is for the soup), before then I had no clue. The food itself is good. Like, why wouldn't it be? I actually prefer the shabu-shabu (soup), makes me wish I knew how to do that myself so I wouldn't have to go out as much. Yes, the grill meats were great, as was the kimchi. These places are not cheap, but it was enjoyable while I was there. If you're not in a rush you can go a few doors down afterward to an import store selling everything from K-chips to puzzle-kits. So I would say...take your time. But don't warm your seats for more than 90 minutes, as Korean BBQs tend to kick people out (nicely, nicely) if one overstays. P.S. I'm sure they have some great drinks there, but even if I wanted to I couldn't loiter. That's what Bethesda is for. (Or at least how it used to be.)
