When you first walk to Dear Irving all you see in front is the awning with the address, just walk up the stairs and you can put your name on the wait list (or give them your name for reservations). My group and I of four people went in on a Friday at 8 30 PM and were told we had a 20-30 minute wait which isn't too bad. However, as soon as we walked out the door we were called back in and brought into the bar because a table had opened then. Walking in, the interior was wonderful. The atmosphere was super chill. It would definitely make a great date spot. We were seated in the back with these nice comfy couches. Service was very quick and we got our drinks rapidly. I ordered a Lady Charmaine which was $16. It came out as a beautiful and delicious drink. All in all, Dear Irving is a wonderful little spot to relax and catch up with friends or a date. read more

Okay, real rating: 4.5 stars. I have a serious love for speakeasies and this is not only a speakeasy but also close to my apartment. I love this spot. We had our office holiday party here (yes, I know bougie. My job is the greatest.) so my review is largely based on that experience. We did have another drink after the holiday party and were able to experience DI as non event guests too. The vibes are great. It is a traditional speakeasy with velvet curtains, leather couches, and fancy lighting. I remember walking in and being overwhelmed with how great the atmosphere is. Our part was in the space toward the back of the bar which really takes you back to another time period. DI is more than just a cool bar, it's an experience. The bartenders have fantastic personalities. (Maybe it was because we had a few of our own for the party?) You can tell that they are fun people who love to make drinks, It's only pitfall is that the cocktails are pretty average. They are good cocktails but are missing the element of a really refined craft cocktail. The Ideal Patriot was my favorite out of all the ones that I tried. After multiple attempts, I finally made it inside Dear Irving. This place has an absurdly long wait on the weekends, so I'd say your best off making a reservation a few days in advance (the website won't allow you to make reservations day of). In any case, I was able to walk in no problem on a Thursday night around 9 (I'm guessing the fact that it's a holiday week/weekend helped), and wow is this place glamorous! Upon entering, you are led to any number of plush seating options. We happened to be seated at a table with two luxurious armchairs, but if you're lucky, you may get to experience the opulence that is a semi-private booth. I say semi-private only because you're shrouded from most of the crowd by curtains of shimmering gemstones. I regret not taking a proper walk through this establishment - if there is a next time, I'd like to get the full experience. I actually didn't realize that Dear Irving and Raines Law Room are owned by the same people until reading previous reviews, but if you have been to both as I have, it's pretty easy to deduce that they're connected in some way. The jazz, the luxury, the doorbell-type method of ordering a drink - consistent in both venues. I love that doorbell feature though - adds to the exclusive, alluring vibe of thins place. Now onto the most important part - the drinks! Creative and delicious. You need to pay a pretty penny for them, but most of them are worth it (not the celery g + t - wasn't really a fan). The two pictured are the "Whiskey Business" (points for the name - shocked I haven't seen a whiskey cocktail with this wordplay before) and the "Vice Versa". Gin and whiskey are my go-to spirits, so these caught my eye immediately. The waitress adamantly recommended both, so who was I not to trust my instincts and the word of our classy waitress? Whiskey Business: rye, ancho chile liqueur, cinnamon, lemon, angostura bitters Vice Versa: gin, grapefruit, bitter, pamplemousse liqueur, rosé cava These drinks are quite different, so it's impossible to pick a favorite. Completely depends on what mood you're in. Apparently I was in the mood for both, because each had me reveling in this speakeasy splendor. I started out with the Whiskey Business and ended with the Vice Versa, but I'd advise switching them - the Whiskey Business is more of a nightcap-type drink. Like Meaghan Dorman's other bars, Dear Irving is a classy and intimately romantic cocktail bar. They take reservations and I highly recommend you make one. My husband and I went to Dear Irving for an after-dinner drink, at around 9:30 on a Sunday night in late July. We were able to waltz right in and get a table. And not just any table, but a whole like harem booth with plush couches and curtains made of crystal strands. The place was opulent, a jazzed up lounge with more flash than the usual speakeasy-style cocktail bar. We enjoyed our table, which almost felt like a private room, though it opened out to the rest of the bar. Service was great, with a system I've only otherwise seen in Korean restaurants and airplanes. You press a button and it turns on a light, summoning your waiter. Our guy was friendly and fast, showing up right away whenever the light was on. I had two cocktails to Matt B.'s one--he was kind of sick and had a bloody nose, so I lapped him. I enjoyed both of mine. The Whiskey Business was a nice drink with a bit of smokey heat, made with rye, ancho chile, lemon, cinnamon, and Angostura bitters. The Xantolo mixed reposado tequila and mezcal with spiced pineapple and lime, a bright, boozy cocktail amped up with aleppo and red pepper. Matt's drink was less noteworthy. He got the Remember the Maine, with rye, sweet vermouth, Cherry Heering, and absinthe. A Manhattan variation that felt a little off balance. We didn't stay long (bleeding husband), but we had a good time at Dear Irving. I'm glad we dropped by, and would recommend if you want to drink cocktails in a fun, fancy lounge. read more

Bit of a let down during covid19 pandemic. The drinks are mediocre but pricey and your forced to get a "nibble" however very limited selection especially for plant based eaters. I was essentially forced to spend $9 on spiced nuts which did not taste good in any way. Next my water glass was chipped and I cut my lip, I told the waitress who just got me a new glass, no discount or apology for me sipping out of a broken glass. Upon Ruwan J's recommendation, I suggested my local friend to try out Dear Irving. He also had heard good things about this place through his network. The place is a little bit hidden, I don't recall seeing any signage. You walk up the stairs to a door where you'll be greeted by the bouncer who immediately would seat you. When we got there, they were running a bit late so we waited a bit before the door was opened. There were only 2 people waiting by the stairs, so we decided to wait down the stairs because it was quite chilly that evening and we wanted to shelter ourselves a bit from the cool breeze. Out of nowhere a flood of 10-15 people came simultaneously and crowded the stairs. So I'd advise to stay waiting in the line or you'll chance losing your place in the queue like us lol. When we walked inside, I was overwhelmed with comfort in my chest. What a cozy place with beautiful decors. They have seats at the bar, then several different couch areas too, another dedicated area with comfy sofa with beautiful crystal curtains, and one room at the back with classy look which they call the Marie Antoinette room. This is our first time coming here and we always make it a habit to sit at the bar so we can try several different cocktails and get some recommendation directly from the bartenders. Our bartender was Rolando who is simply awesome, love him!! He recommended Feel No Pain, Xantolo, Sundowner Flip and some others which he mentioned that these are the drinks that they never take off menu even though they rotate their menu each season. We ordered Vice Versa (the grapefruit flavor is very dominant), Feel No Pain (kinda like Pina Colada texture but this one has spices twist which I completely fell in love with), Sundowner Flip (this one is also extraordinarily amazing), and Lion's Tail (well done!) We really enjoyed our time there, great atmosphere and vibe. Just before we left, Rolando also treated us a round of tasty shot. This bar has been added to our top 3 bars in NY. The exterior was so unassuming that at first glance I wasn't sure why it's rated so highly. I came with a group of 5 on a Saturday night without a reservation and was put on the waitlist. Luckily for us, we were seated after 30 minutes. The room we were in was so classy and romantic with a Victorian feel to it. Some of the other rooms had a Great Gatsby feel to it. Each drink is $16 and well worth it. I ordered the Southern Gentlemen, which tasted so smooth and flavorful. One of my friends couldn't decide on what to order, so the waiter had the bartender make a drink based on alcohol base and style. Loved the flexibility. We were in town the other day to enjoy New York and in a couple days span, try a bunch of the speakeasy bars that the town does so well. We went from spot to spot Friday night and Saturday night. Many of the places were beyond expectations. Sunday we bounced around town and we were about to go to the airport. "Say, we never hit Irving" I said. " we have time to stop at one more place". Minutes later our Uber pulled up to a random street in midtown, well down on 17th anyhow. Yet no building said "Dear Irving". Ahhh, a true speakeasy. We wandered around till we walked into an unassuming residential building and there it was. When we got a seat at the bar we got to soak in the ambiance of a real classy hidden spot. The bar keep was a real pro. She blended us some nice drinks and offered up some nice scotch as well. The place classy head to toe. Glass beads, a Tin ceiling, and Sinatra and others were crooning in the air. We weren't able to stay long, we had a flight to catch. We came on a late Sunday afternoon and was surprised that there was no wait. Once you get there, the host/hostess will greet you and offer to check your coat and bag, and then seat you with an option of either lounge seating or bar seating. We aimed for the lounge seating and there's a button by each lounge area that has to be pressed when you are ready to order or need a waitstaff service.
