This place is so upscale, classy, gorgeous and romantic! I am so happy I discovered this Victorian style gem. Came here with my 3 gfs on a Friday night. We put our names in at around 8 PM and they said it would approx. be a 30-40 minute wait. They take your name and number and text you when your table is ready. We only ended up waiting 20 minutes which was nice. We ended up getting a nice corner table that had two long velvet couches. The tables are separated by these pretty crystal strings. Cocktails are $16 which is typical for a place like this. You order by pressing a button on the wall which lights up letting your server know to come over. The drinks are pretty strong and decorated nicely. This is definitely the kind of place you come to dressed up. There's a bar section if you want to keep it more casual. There's also a beautiful Victorian room in the back that looks like you stepped into a museum. Will come back again for a future date night! They refused us a table and explained (although private seating was available) only seating of 4 or more were accommodated any less sat at the bar. What a nasty surprise! A cute little cocktail bar that is decorated to attract those seeking a more low-key, speakeasy vibe. While I feel like it's a bit exposed to be considered a speakeasy, Dear Irving definitely exudes a comfortable and non-pretentious atmosphere for anyone to come by and enjoy a cocktail or two. They have a variety of cocktail, wine and beer options, so anyone can find something to enjoy. I do wish they had more variety in the little dishes to pick on, but considering it is more of a bar than a restaurant, I understand. I really like how the tables are not too close to each other and can accomodate parties big or small. The clear plastic curtain (?) partitions are cute and with the dim lighting and all they does look nice from afar (though a bit tacky upclose haha). There's enough privacy for you to not be totally exposed to everybody inside the bar. Overall, Dear Irving will add a nice, pleasant touch to the beginning or end of your night. Maybe my favorite cocktail bar in the city. Dear Irving is a super popular cocktail bar and the hype is real. Also, the wait is real. I came in on a Friday night hoping to get a table for 4. We were told it would be about an hour which was no problem because we were going to just wait at another bar in the mean time. We ended up losing 2 people.... So, we arrived earlier to inform them. Good for us because we ended up sitting at the bar. We were asked if we wanted to sit at a table 20 minutes into our bar seating but honestly the bar was fine. The place isn't that difficult to find and the ambiance is very chic. The cocktails however are the best part of the whole place. They have a lot to choose from and I want to go back just to try the ones I haven't tried. I think they change their cocktails around so they might now have the ones I pictured. The two I remembered were the Xantolo and the Lady Charmaine. The xantolo was real spicy. But I really wanted the pineapple. It was a great drink though if you like it on the spicy side. The second drink Lady Charmaine I ordered because I love pisco so I was sure to love it. The drink was basically a smoothie. I enjoyed it but I probably wouldn't order it again because I'm not the biggest fan of a milk shake like drink. I've tried the drinks my friend ordered and they were delicious. I'm a fan of a good speakeasy, and it's one of the rare occasions where I actually order a cocktail. We stopped here on a Tuesday night, and were thankfully able to get seated for 2 immediately around 7PM. The bar was busy but not packed full. We weren't able to stay for too long, but enough for two drinks, the first being the Xantolo - reposado tequila, mezcal, spiced pineapple, lime. A little more kick than I'd expect, not overly sweet, and the mezcal definitely came through. For my second drink I opted to ask if they could make a tequila old fashioned, to which they obliged. A little sweeter this time around, but a great version. Long story short, don't be afraid to order off the menu. The only bar snack we tried was their version of caramel corn, which was fine. I'd tried to stop by here with friends a few times before actually making it in the door because of the huge wait list that typically develops in the evenings. After finally waiting out the line though, I could see why this place is so popular. The bar has several different rooms and each are supposed to represent a different era. We sat in the far back and made our way through a couple of the rooms with different color and decor themes. Depending on where you're seated, they have buzzers to alert your waiter/waitress that you're ready to place an order. The drinks and light food are a little expensive, but not more than any other place nearby ($15/drink; $18/cheese plate). And the quality of the cocktails probably warrants the cost, considering what others charge. I have recommended this place to friends and would definitely make a return here, the biggest problem is the wait though. Dear Irving is incredible! This speakeasy is super awesome and feels very exclusive, but at the same time it is not at all pretentious. You definitely need reservations and won't just be able to walk in off the street. After announcing yourself to the hostess, there are four themed rooms that you may find yourself in for cocktails and small bites. The front room is themed to JFK, the second room is Great Gatsby-esque, the third room with the bar is English royalty, and the back room is based on Marie Antoinette. My friends and I were seated in the back room, so we got to see all the other themes, which are so well done. The cocktail menu is filled with variety, and I loved the Pearl Collins gin drink that the server suggested to me. I also love the little fact that you push a button the wall when you want to place an order or get your check...very nice touch to keep your evening intimate and to keep service flowing. Then i said 'is it possible that you guys go inside (i meant her and my mexican friend Alek) and check if they are inside or not. If they are not we will leave. She was very unhappy about this. She said 'well i do not think they are inside but let's see.' Then we saw our friend at the gate. He was worried and came to take us. My friend and her started a conversation. She was very aggressive and ready to explode. My friends were waiting at the bar and asking her how long will it take to get a table. (they were already waiting more than half hour). She became more aggressive. She said 'as you can see it is busy today, if you do not want to wait i can lead you to the door.' When I walked in this place I knew it would be my favorite bar in Manhattan. It's a speakeasy, like many bars in this city, but what makes it stand out is the decor and the jazz playing in the background. We walked in while an Ella Fitzgerald song was playing - beautiful! There was a 20 minute wait, so we put our name in on the waitlist and got a drink at the bar downstairs. They text you when your table is ready, so we were able to enjoy a drink while we waited. There is a free coatcheck, but be careful because there isn't always someone watching your stuff. Don't bring valuables to the coat check. The decor is gorgeous - there are I would say three distinct rooms, the one in the front facing the street, the one in the middle with the bar, and the one in the back. We were seated at a table next to the bar. The last room is so beautiful - it reminds me of rooms you'd see in a castle in Italy or France. The seats, the lighting, the wallpaper, the tables, everything. I ordered the Lady Charmaine and the Vice Vera, and shared the cheese platter with my friend. The spiced nuts are amazing - never had rosemary and cayenne pepper on bar nuts before but they were addicting! The sheep cheese was my favorite, and the jam is also really good. Last minute date on a Saturday after just sitting on the couch and nursing a hangover from the night prior. Went here for drinks and it was a pretty cute spot. Some minor issues were that the seating situation was a bit confusing. We were sitting across from each other with no table in the middle so my date and I were a bit confused. The ambiance was good, but it was a bit too loud to be able to hear ourselves. The cocktail option for me was not to my favor because they didn't have much vodka moments, but they replaced whatever it was with vodka so not a big issue. Staff is very courteous and the cocktails overall are very well made. This place reminds me so much of Raines Law Room, which I adore. It is a good intimate date moment and I would go again, but apparently it is very hard to get reservations. I recommend making reservations in advance even if you have no plans. Is the word "scene" still even used in today's lingo (another word that I haven't heard in awhile)? If so, this is exactly how my friend described Dear Irving after we went in for a drink. It's a sexy, more upscale place where you will find delicious, artfully crafted cocktails. The bartenders really take their time to make each one, so it's not a place to run in, grab a quick drink and head out within 5 minutes. It wasn't crowded when we got there (the bar was maybe 80% full at 5 pm on a December Saturday) but it took at least 10-15 minutes before our bartender finished up making the other drinks and came to take our order. I had the Strawberry Beret (a little tart, a little sweet, a little smoky - super delicious), and my friend had the Pearl Collins. Loved the metal straws too. Vibe/Ambiance: 3 different "rooms" reflecting different periods. One with plastic crystal beads and booth like tables which reminded me of sketchy dive bars in Asia from the 80s so I didn't really love that tbh. Many have said "impress your date by coming to this unmarked bar" but I wouldn't go that far. It's cute and the "throw back" idea is nice but nothing to drool over. I think the level of your drooling will depend on your age actually... I'm in my early 30s and while I appreciate a good cocktail I also NEED cool enough ambiance that makes me feel like it was worth putting on a kick ass pair of Chanel's. Cocktails: Having said all of the above, cocktails are delicious. I had "Pear Collins" (light and refreshing but I felt like they forgot my gin?) and two "Gibson" which is a sweet and sour gin based cocktail with a small onion inside - so good. We were two couples and did three rounds and all of our drinks were yum. ("Whiskey business" and old fashioned like cocktail were hits) Bites: Had the croque monsieur, crackerjacks with bacon and pecan, mixed nuts and roast beef sandwich. The sandwiches are cut into small bite size pieces so a great idea for sharing. The first was by far the best. Service: Great. The server was prompt and the cocktails were brought out at just the right pace. You press a button and she will show right up. We got seated at a couch, which was at the same table as these two chair with people you didn't know. Which was fine, you don't really notice since the chairs and couches are so big. Also, you press a button on a wall and that signals the waitress, they don't come around and "ask how you're doing" all the time, only when you've pushed the button! After several attempts to get into Dear Irving, we finally got in, but think we just got lucky cause when I called to make a reservation, they happened to have a few cancellations due to the freezing cold on a Thursday. Point being, if you want to come here, make sure you either: a) get here very early, like when they open at 5:30pm or b) make a reservation. I've come before when they've said it's a 2-3 hour wait, so make sure you plan accordingly. As many other Yelpers have said, it's the same owners as Raines Law Room (another favorite of mine) so it has a similar feel. Once inside, you check your coats and then you're led to your seats either at the bar or at one of the tables. One thing they don't allow or like, is for people to be standing and crowding up the place, which is awesome, and similar to Brandy Library in Tribeca (but you have to be 25 to get in btw). I always prefer the bar as I can watch them make the drinks, so I can try to re-create it at home (sort of, lol). The ambiance is beautiful, cozy and perfect for drinks with friends, dates, co-workers, etc. Gorgeously appointed furniture and decorations, with each room having a different type of Victorian theme, but with a pretty modern bar area. We only ordered drinks, and We Shared: Sherry Cobbler (amontillado sherry, orgeat (almond & rose flower syrup), muddled fruit)- this was my favorite drink of the night, tied with Hotel Nacional. I love Sherry to begin with, so this drink was unique and flavorful at the same time, both bitter and sweet. Tastes different than pretty much any drink you've had. Hotel Nacional (aged rum, lime, apricot liqueur, pineapple gomme syrup)- this was my favorite drink, tied with Sherry Cobbler, of the night. Great citrus flavor without being too sweet nor too tart. Overall, exceptional. Three Little Birds (jamaican rum, apple cider, lime, orgeat)- another great drink, although a little on the sweet side for me, but nonetheless, great. Bartlett Spur (reposado teguila, spiced pear, lemon, honey, sweet vermouth)- another great drink, but for me, using the reposado tequila, as opposed to a blanco tequila, gave a little too much smokiness/oak to the drink...just my two cents. Very good, but not my favorite. Espresso Martini (vodka, cold-brew coffee, espresso & vanilla liqueurs)- although I love good coffee, I'm not a huge fan of coffee drinks as I've had a number of bad experiences drinking Black Russians at bars in Mexico in High School. So, I really didn't want to order it, but my date wanted to, so we did. Personally, I didn't like it at all, but she said it was great. So you decide. One thing that is clear, is that the Mixologists put a ton of work into making the drinks and they were exceptional. My only negative is that the drinks tend to be fairly sweet, and so, we could only handle 2-3 drinks each. So I view this place as the perfect spot to go to pre-dinner or after-dinner as it wouldn't be a place I would hang out at all night, unless I switched to more basic (non-cocktail menu) drinks. And although the drinks seem pricey at $15, it's expected in Manhattan, and given the experience you're receiving, it's worth it. Overall, Dear Irving is the perfect lounge in an intimate setting, with exceptional cocktails for hanging with friends, impressing dates or catching up with co-workers. So impressed with Dear Irving!!! We made a reservation and walked up the steps to this wonderful place! The ambiance was wonderful. We sat in the F. Scott Fitzgerald inspired room it was wonderfully decorated and I felt like I was back in the 1920s while sipping my drink. For drinks I ordered the Pearl Collins (at least I think that was the name) and it tasted so good! My boyfriend ordered the Island High Life (or something similar to that name) and he said it tasted very good! Flicking the switch to also have your server come over was also such a nice touch and convenient. We ordered two other drinks that were also great! Sorry I can't remember the names! The staff was also so sweet! For food we ordered the nibble tray and the beef jerky. The food took a while to come out but they ended up comping us for the beef jerky since it took a while! How nice! The nibble tray consisted of mixed olives, cheese, and sopressata. The beef jerky was cut so thinly and had a slight spice but tasted so great! It was perfect to go with our drinks. When my friend mentioned wanting to go for a drink after dinner, I started to think of where we could go in the East Village area. As I was about to offer some suggestions, he mentioned Dear Irving, the new space by the Raines Law Room people. I had not heard much about the opening, but loved Raines, so I was eager to try it. Luckily, he had also reserved a table for us, because the place was packed! I loved the romantic decor and how each room had a different Victorian name. The furniture was mismatched on a whole, but corresponded with the vibe in each room. We were seated a small round table with two large, comfortable chairs. We settled in to look through a number of $15 cocktails on the menu. We decided on our order and flipped the switch besides us. It lit up as a signal of our preparedness to the waitress. I started with the Vice Versa, a bright and refreshing mix of gin, grapefruit, bitters, pamplemousse liqueur, and rosé cava. It was sparkling and crisp. I also sampled the tart Santa Rosa with its blend of pisco, cocchi rosa, sorel, lime, and cherries. I did not like this one quite as much as the Vice Versa, though. Another highlight was the Paloma, made with blanco tequila, mezcal, grapefruit, lime, agave, club soda, and chili salt. The smoky and sour undertones made a great pair and led to an extremely satisfying beverage experience. I also loved how the menu included a description of each cocktail that unmasked all of the flavors that we could expect from our drinks. Despite not having to go through the lengthy details with us, our server was still helpful and efficient. Sitting in Dear Irving really made me feel like I was back in the Prohibition-era. This is what it's all about for me... A place where you can have amazing cocktails in a cool atmosphere. Dear Irving is a 1930's style speakeasy located in the Gramercy section of Manhattan. As with most speakeasies of this type, the entrance is a bit easy to miss as it blends in with the surrounding environment. Once inside (if there's availability) you enter into a dimly lit boardwalk empire kind of atmosphere. There are winding seats throughout and the there is a button for you to push when you're ready for drinks or apps. The drinks are excellent. I tried a few different ones and they were exactly what you'd expect from a speakeasy of this type: authentic, strong and delicious.
