If there's anything I'll be missing about the Navy is being able to come here. The ability to completely fill up a grocery cart for $150 is definitely not unappreciated by this soon-to-be vet. I absolutely LOVE this place! It's huge and they have mostly everything I need. Their selection of items is decent, but like other have commented, their customer service isn't the greatest. I personally think it's cultural thing, but since I can relate to the lack of being friendly (my family isn't big on sharing their emotions), it doesn't bother me much. We make our weekly shopping trip here. Great selection. It gets better all the time as they are always adding new items. Their natural and organic items have been growing which is great for us. Just some tips: don't go shopping on Saturday afternoon! It's a mad house. Don't shop on the 1st or the 15th; it's payday rush. Also, we don't buy our produce here, except for a few specific items. Don't forget your reusable shopping bags! I'm taking off a star mainly because they sneakily add a 'surcharge' onto your bill that is about the same amount you would have paid in tax. Love the selection. Love how HUGE the store is which is why there's room to have such a great selection. Love how clean it is. Dislike the lack of employees around to help you find something in this monstrous grocery store. Dislike the overweight housewives with their 5 kids running around getting in your way & blocking all the isles. Dislike how the baggers automatically start putting your groceries in their special weird bagger carts, forcing you to let them bring out your groceries, put them in the car in a way that you don't want, while they proceed to stare at you until you give them a tip. I feel bad for the 85 year old baggers who look like they're about to have a heart attack & collapse, but the ungrateful teenagers are probably making more money in tips than I did working full time! Maybe if I start shopping there first thing in the morning on wknds, or late in the evening when it's hopefully not so crowded, and maybe if I can speak up to say I'll take my own groceries out...then I'll give it an extra star. read more

Took my Pops here to shop since he recently had knee surgery and he couldn't drive. Nice big store with lots of items. Prices are decent for some of the items, but other items comparable to Wal-Mart or Target prices. All the prices are listed on LCD display on the shelves. Interesting! But we did have a problem with one of the prices not ringing up correctly on the Yoplait Yogurt listed as $0.40 but rang up as $0.49 cents. My dad was all over that! He likes to talk to people and give his opinion on stuff. I'm like I don't know this guy. He's retired military so he is able to shop here, but I was a military brat but no longer have Commissary or PX privileges since I am too old and was never in the military myself. They do take coupons here, but don't do doubling and there is a 5% surcharge, even though they don't charge sales tax. read more

I appreciate Commissary's in general because they offer name brand items at a lower cost and they accept coupons on top of that savings. This Commissary is HUGE! One of the biggest I have ever seen and it is always stocked. Of course around paydays the meats run low and it gets crowded, but that is to be expected. Meats are always cheaper here then in a civilian market. I personally like the ground turkey and boneless skinless chicken. The ground turkey is typically 3.99 for 20oz. and I can easily get 4 large boneless, skinless chicken breast for 6-7 dollars. Can't beat it! Never had an issue with the costumer service. Always pleasant. I usually let someone bag my items, tip them and then I take the stuff my car. Baggers are almost always elderly people who only make money through tips. A couple dollars isn't going to break me. Especially if it goes towards a retiree who strictly works for tips. The San Diego area is a very diverse area and this Commissary caters to that diversity. Which is important. If you have a military ID...go support our Commissaries! You will not regret it. read more

Love the commissary. I have nothing bad to say about it. If you have access to base and don't live too far, it's definitely worth it to do all your grocery shopping here. It was just remodeled inside and everything, I meant EVERYTHING, is in a different location. The meats are still against the back wall, but the order or items are a little different. Not only are majority of the prices a little different, they carry everything here. They have a large selection of Asian foods -- WIN! They also use coupons and their coupon policy is definitely not the most strict of them all. The #1 reason why they get 5-stars is because every time I have come, everyone who works here is always so friendly and helpful. We got here at 7:50pm last night, yes, that's 10 minutes before they close.. please blame my boyfriend because I would never show up to any business within 20 minutes of closing LOL. By the time we got the small amount of groceries we needed, we get to the register and there is a guy with about 30 coupons in his hand. The cashier that we had was super cool about his coupons and didn't seem upset that is was already 9:15 - 15 minutes passed closing. He helped us and was very nice. I've worked in retail and the food industry and I know how annoying it is to have customers come in when businesses are closing. Not only do you have to wait for all the customers to leave, if there is no night crew, you have to put all items back, and clean up the store to be ready for the next day. There were definitely about 15 other people who showed up 10 minutes before closing like we did and a few of them were still shopping when we were checking out; nobody working in the commissary was rushing them or giving them attitude to hurry up and leave. The prices are great and it's one of the largest commissaries that I have ever been in. The staff is usually friendly and courteous, just don't try to find help in the aisles or meat section because the employees will not be found. Having been to Commissary's all over the country this is by far one of the worst. Everything feels super cramped and the aisles are very narrow. The selection overall is good but the customer service (or the lack thereof) is horrendous. Baggers and check-out people seem so miserable with an unwelcoming attitude. Great place to shop for groceries! About 98% of the time, it is cheaper than buying from Albertsons, Vons, or Ralphs! I really really like the fresh Romaine Lettuce and for the price range(.59-.89 cents per lettuce) it is really huge comparing to other produce/grocery stores I've been to! (Sorry I really like fresh romaine lettuce! =p) If you do not like crowds, avoid coming on paydays or even the weekends! Aisles are always blocked off with carts in the middle and people hogging up the pathways on these days! Also use self-checkout, only if you know how to use it, especially on busy days. It's irritating on a busy day when someone who does not know how to use self-checkout decides to use it and spends an hour there. Other than that, its a clean supermarket, really organized. Sometimes they have mega case sales which I would suggest people to take advantage of because it's almost like going to costco... sort of. But there are some good deals! read more

I have been shopping at this commissary for at least a year and overall it is okay. The layout is excellent. The aisles are very large compared to the average grocery store. Of course the produce section is in the front to the immediate left. They have a vast selection of items such as Asian food. Overall the prices are cheaper than comparable grocery stores as well. The items are always stocked on the shelves. I've never had any issues of locating items that are out of stock. There are cons though. On paydays it is a NIGHTMARE!!! Avoid paydays at all costs because it is crowded and the lines are very long. There are not many employees on the floor to help if you have to look for a particular item. If you have access to the base, I recommend coming here to shop. You will save more money in the long run. No Tax but there's a service charge at the end so keep that in mind. Bag your own groceries, to save some money on tipping I don't usually carry small bills and even if I did the bagging job is usually pretty bad. Bags with one to three items so you end up with so many bags that are barely filled! Prices are good and there's a large selection of food and I like the convenience of that. As far as the produce goes it's a hit or miss, as in all commissaries. The prices out in town are usually better too with fresher produce. It's definitely worth shopping here for the large selection and overall prices. Frozen foods and cold cereal are super cheap here too. read more

My fiance and I normally come here when we go grocery shopping. It's pretty packed, but that's probably because we visit during weekend afternoons. A lot of their products are definitely much cheaper than what they would be at regular grocery stores in the San Diego area. I can tell you that we have certainly saved money shopping here instead, but there are some things, such as produce, frozen foods, etc., that are the same price or are more expensive here. So if you are really trying to maximize your savings, make sure to keep a mental note as to what is cheapest where. Their bakery is pretty awesome. Their muffins, which are cheapest when you buy $4 for $3.99, are pretty big and are very addicting. Probably one of the only muffins that I eat past the muffin top! Not dry at all, and filled with deeelicious chocolate chips. Oh! They have a sandwich place in the Commissary, that my hubby LOVES. I think he pays something like $5.99 for a very big sandwich that is packed with meat and whatever else you want. Definitely better than Subway and all other sandwich places nearby. There's also a little sushi stand, and a little corner of Filipino/Asian specialties. They also sell Filipino ice cream, which is pretty cool because you can normally only find those at Filipino grocery stores. A dollar more expensive at the Commissary, though. Overall, we will continue to go shopping here for a lot of our groceries as long as we still have access to base! read more

32nd Street Commissary is probably the best commissary in San Diego. Bigger than North Island Commissary and Imperial Beach Commissary put together. Lots of selection here. There's an organic/gluten free aisle, vitamin aisle, deli counter, meat/poultry/seafood counter and a sushi stand. **TIP: If you're looking for ground beef, go to North Island or Costco. Ground beef here is consistently as much as Vons or Albertson's.** Just as all commissaries get busier the closer to payday, this one isn't any different. The customer service is hit or miss; sometimes the cashiers are friendly, other times not so much. **REMEMBER: They scan your military ID when you're checking out, so don't forget to bring it in!!!** read more

I like this commissary. It's huge and it's got all the basics plus some things you might not find in other stores. However, I'm knocking off a star for fruit and veggie quality. It's cheap, but that's what you get. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten fruits home and cut into them only to find that they are rotten on the inside. It's frustrating. There are always more bad packs of fruits than good ones. I see moldy fruits every single time I go here. And this is just my personal pet peeve but A) I hate it when they don't read the total out loud. I need to know how much I'm spending before I spend it. and B) The baggers work for tips only so they can be very pushy about taking your cart out for you. The 32nd St commissary is the largest commissary in the San Diego area. It is larger, and has a better selection, than most grocery stores. Stay away during payday due to crowds. I find that many staff members are very friendly. Today's cashier had a smile on her face, and was very friendly. The Commissary at Naval Base San Diego is probably the best commissary I have ever been to. They have just about everything you could want or need. It always ends up they are out of something we need and have to go to the regular grocery store to get it...and pay 3-5 times what it would cost at the commissary. They have a huge deli section. For some reason you can not get a great sourdough round to save my life, but they do have a nice selection of ethnic items. Don't forget to pick up a few of those environmentally friendly reusable green plastic shopping bags. They sell them for under a buck! read more

This place has three stores, commissary (grocery), NEX (its like a mall), and a store that is for house hold items and furniture (bed, bath &beyond) the pricing here is very reasonable, not only because its tax-free but the deals here are pretty good. The parking here can get crazy. Rush hour is usually during the day starting around 9am or so. People usually shop during the day but at night there is hardly anyone (which is the best time to shop if you don't like long lines and people getting in your way.) Best place to buy things you need. Only drawback: frequently Henry's grocery store beats the Commissary in produce prices, and sometimes major grocery stores offer loss-leader specials for meat, etc. that are cheaper than here. Okay, I also dislike the surcharge, but the commissary does take coupons... Easy parking, decent (to downright CHEAP) prices, orderly check-out system, groceries put in your car for just a tip, and a location just off the 5 freeway... YAY! read more

This is a good Commissary. I still wouldn't buy any meat or seafood from any of the commissaries, but everything else is game. I love the selection of "ethnic" foods, toiletries, and non-perishables. I buy produce from the farmer's market, but there are a few produce items I don't mind picking up from here if they are fresh and I am in need of them. Sometimes the produce looks tired and picked through, so keep that in mind. Of course, the prices are awesome; one of the perks of being a military family is getting to shop here. If they got a butcher with no hormone meats and made a point to carry local produce, I'd shop here for everything. Otherwise, I keep it to non-fresh foods and cleaning supplies. It's crowded. Sometimes they run out of the things you want. BUT, I still love this place! I'm a huge fan of saving money and even though it may seem unnecessary to drive to the commissary, it has saved us a whole lot of money. Over the years, they have been getting better and better, and trust me, I appreciate that. There are some items that you may find cheaper elsewhere, but for the most part, the commissary is the place to be. Between MCAS Miramar and 32nd Street, I'd definitely have to choose 32nd Street overall. If you have a military ID and you don't come here, you really need to start coming here. Please be aware the commissary now charges you an extra 5% tax for bags. This is off of your total bill. Yes you are now being taxed at the Co. Commissary for everything even nontaxable food like milk and eggs and vegetables. I now shop at local stores for produce it's cheaper there and nontaxed . I have saved all my receipts from the comissary. Hopefully someone will file a class action lawsuit against them. I even would bring reusable bags into the store. It's not worth it because they still charge you the bag tax even if you don't use their overpriced paper or plastic bags. If you could avoid this fee by using your own recycled bags I would still shop at the comissary, but until that happens they have lost my families business. The only reason I put up with the abysmal customer service provided by the commissary is because of the prices. Today I am still sitting in the 40 item self check out line where 1 of 2 registers are working. The other one is broken and has been for a week. You have 6 registers for 20 items or less but 1 for a normal family trip. Combine that with long waits at deli and fish counter and price is the only reason. I have been coming here for the last 20 years. While the variety of the goods/brands is wonderful and the prices not bad at all, the quality of the personnel leaves a lot to be desired. Their customer service is just plain bad. I have had several "encounters" and the customer seems to be mostly an inconvenience.
