This little unassuming Thai restaurant is absolutely delicious! I stopped by on a whim since I was already in the area when they opened, and I'm so glad I did. I dined in, and while there was a slightly unpleasant smell in the dining area and it was freezing, I literally walked in a minute after they opened, so I'll cut them some slack. I ordered the lunch special with red curry and pad Thai, and it was fantastic! Both dishes were packed with flavor and cooked perfectly. This is one of my absolute favorite place in Des Moines. I have been at Dee Des Moines multiple times and it just keeps getting better! They have made many changes inside the dining area. It is neat to be able to see the changes and growth of small businesses such as this one. The place is clean and organized and quaint. The staff are warm and welcoming. I do enjoy dining in and there are plenty of tables to choose from to eat at. I do love the way they make their Phad Thai. It has plenty of vegetables in it. That is one thing I appreciate is that they do not skimp on the vegetables. Sometimes I prefer not having my phad Thai with meat so I opt for tofu. They give you a choice of fried or not, which I like that. Very Vegetarian friendly. If you love curry you will have to try theirs. So They have a great selection on their menu! Many popular choices. My go to is the massaman curry. I recently tried their Chiangmai curry noodles. At first I was shocked to see the crunchies on top. I thought that it would be crunchy style but it was just the toppings. The chef came out and showed me how to add the onions, lime and bean sprout. There was also pickled mustard. I wasn't sure about the mustard until I had that first bite! Wow! So good and perfectly fused together with a hint of the lime sour and savory taste, yum!!! I really needed that soup since the weather was so doom and gloom and cold. It helped me warm up. To top it off, I had to have their young coconut. I drank the juice and ate the coconut meat after, I just couldn't get enough. Felt like I was in the tropics. The window seat is the best. It is relaxing to look outside and just check out. The view faces the corner of 216th and Marine View Dr. The music is calming and I enjoy listening to Thai music. It fits the esthetic. I really like when they play the Thai country music sometimes. Definitely a place to go back and bring friends. Or eat alone and do a little office work. I get their Thai tea for that occasion. Overall experience has been great every time I go in. Food is amazing. Great options available. Chefs are very caring and is sweet to explain her dishes when I was not sure about what to order. Found this hidden gem while meeting a friend for dinner. I did not know what to expect and was completely blown away by the kind, grateful service. The food was delicious, started with the prawns spring rolls which was served with a side of peanut a sauce and a side of plum sauce. The crispy garlic chicken was next and a chicken yellow curry. The owner/server made a mango sticky rice for dessert so we ordered one to share and was the best I've ever had. I truly felt like I was at home with my own mom. The restaurant is a house. Although my friend and I were the only ones in the entire place, I truly enjoyed the experience, warm hospitality throughout and more importantly, the great flavors. He had eaten here before, but this was my first time. Dee Des Moines is a small, stand alone restaurant that takes up the lower floor of a house. The exterior is cute with lots of greenery and square cut hedges. I ordered a chicken pad Thai (4 star) and my boyfriend ordered a chicken pad see ew (3 star) to go. We also were going to order mango iced tea, but they were out, and so we both ended up getting Thai iced teas instead. Our total came to about $34 including tax. The staff is very nice and were all wearing masks. They had our food ready within 15 minutes. They have a parking lot and so we just waited there until our food was ready. Both dishes had lots of noodles (maybe a little less protein than other places), but was more than enough to fill our hungry stomachs. The four star pad Thai definitely had a kick to it, but nothing unbearable and definitely nothing the Thai iced tea couldn't fix! Funny story, almost 5 years ago my uncles brought me to this restaurant to eat 3.5 star everything in order to induce my labor. Literally hours later in the middle of the night, my water broke! We ate here again today (takeout only), and everything was so good! We ordered pad thai, pad see ew, crispy garlic chicken, panang curry, fried rice, pot stickers and fresh rolls. Everything was so fresh, so full of flavor, and it just got better and better as the day continued on and I was able to keep picking at what was left. That panang curry though!!!! I am still drooling thinking about it. I ordered pick up and it was ready on time, the woman was thoughtful and considerate (she asked if we needed utensils before I left). It's more of a hole in the wall type vibe since they don't allow dining in anymore. It's kind of like a house, so you see the busyness of life as you enter. I didn't mind it. I approached the door and set off the motion sensor, but the door was locked. After a minute, I saw somebody walking behind the glass door a knocked. They opened and explained I was there to pick up an order. Lady said they were closed. I inquired why then would there have been an order placed yesterday for today's pick up and lady said she would go and check back. After waiting 10+- minutes, nobody came back out. Wasted almost an hour travel time with the wait. Glad I avoided this place anyway, as it looked dingy and run down, plus the health inspector tag showed "okay", which is second lowest rating you can receive. After living in Des Moines for seven YEARS, I finally gave this place a try and was not disappointed. In fairness, Dee Des Moines is not "Urban Thai Bistro" as it says on the awning. That was the previous owner and the buzz was not good. These people seem to know what they're doing. Pretty much. Stopping in a little before noon, I was greeted warmly, shown to my seat, and asked if I wanted a beverage. I LOVE Thai iced coffee, and it came quickly. I went with the lunch special that started with Tom Kha soup followed by chicken Panang curry with fish cakes, white rice and a bit of Pad Thai. Followed that up with house-made coconut ice cream for dessert. It was my first time eating fish cakes and they were tender, hot and not at all fishy. Which may be a good thing, or perhaps not if you were expecting fish flavor. Ordered the Panang with three stars and was surprised that it wasn't spicier. My server explained that, with so many senior citizens among their guests, they can't really make it a "true three star" so bump it up if you like your That food spicy. Portions were good sized and I took about half home for another lunch later in the week. The house-made coconut ice cream topped with toasted coconut was the perfect touch; very light and not as sweet as you might expect, which I thought was great. My only criticism is that they had only one server on at lunch and, once the noon hour crowd started flowing in, she got a little overwhelmed. It happens, but it made me glad I'd beaten the rush. This is so far my goto place when it comes to Thai restaurants! First of all the service is always worth coming. They are a family owned restaurant so the kids will even come out and help for some service which is super sweet. They are always welcoming to every customers:-) I come by for lunch every now and then whenever I feel something to fill me up since it's only $9.95 for a valuable meal that serves a cup of their soup of the day, pad Thai and a choice of fried rolls/crab wanton, choice of brown/white rice and a choice of the main dish which has varieties of curry's and vegetarian options! Flavor of the yellow curry was AMAZING! Best I've had flavor wise. Jasmine rice was delicious and I liked the crab cheese puff balls. The young man manning the front of the store was quick and friendly. Unfortunately that's about all that I enjoyed. Initially I sent an order in thru Yelp and went and picked it up. I was really thrown off because it's an old uninviting house that's been partially turned into a restaurant. I was unsure about going in but it seemed to have quite a few people coming and going so I went for it. it's pretty beat down and not really an appropriate setting for a restaurant. When I walked in, again I almost left. It smelled like pee and baby wipes and there was a baby screaming its head off in the dining area. It's literally inside someone's house. There's a bunch of mismatched chairs, a china cabinet, just all kinds of random junk everywhere. I paid for my order and waited a short while before getting my food and driving 20 mins to home. When I got home I found they had given me the wrong food so I had to go back which I was not happy about. They corrected the error quickly however and the staff I met were very nice. I got Curry w prawns which tasted absolutely amazing but only had a small amount of prawns. It's too pricey for the few prawns you get. And the amount of rice you get w it is not enough. The portion was just way too small to justify the price tag. That coupled with the awkward environment makes me not want to go back. read more

I haven't seen bean sprouts or fresh herbs on anything in months... The last few times my order was wrong entirely. I've ordered take out twice (both times during the Covid "Stay Home Order". Both times it was ready in the stated time and hot. 1st time I ordered tofu pad Thai made vegan and an order of tofu fresh rolls. The Pad Thai was really good, just wish there were more vegetables in it. I like my pad Thai with a good amount of sweetness and theirs is sweet. The fresh rolls were a huge disappointment. They were $8 for 2 and the rolls were flavorless and the peanut sauce was not good at all. They were so bad that I went out and got all the stuff to make my own a few days later (I'd never made them, or peanut sauce before and mine were 100x better)! My second order was vegan pad Thai again and vegan pineapple fried rice. The pad Thai wasn't as good as the first time, but still good. The pineapple fried rice (minus raisins) was great! Oily, but very good! My only complaint would be the price. $13.50 for some rice and tofu is a little much for what it is. It's nice to have some good Thai close to home. This place has been numerous Thai places over the years, but I've never tried them until now. read more

Seems like an odd place for a Thai Food Restaurant (it's a home) but it is always really good. Typical go tos are Pad Thai (1 star) and Panang Curry with white rice (1 star). The Panang always seems way more spicy than the Pad Thai because of the liquids but the flavor is great. Four stars due to the price and portions. read more
