I go to Sylvia at Deep Blue for a partial foil/cut every few months. After trying out other salons in the area, I am so glad I found Deep Blue. Sylvia is knowledgeable, professional, and does a great job of making my color look natural - even when it's growing out. I can always count on Sylvia to explain exactly what she is going to do before we get started, and to follow through with my requests. I usually just tell her to do what she feels my hair needs in terms of cut and color, and she always does a killer job. On top of doing a great job with my cut and color, Sylvia is friendly and attentive, asking me if I'm comfortable or if I need anything while I wait for my color to be ready. The salon is clean, pretty (there's awesome art showcased on the walls), and has a great, welcoming vibe. My last experience at Deep Blue was the best one yet. I spoke to Sylvia about trying balayage, but didn't know much about the process - only that a few of my friends had it done and look great. Sylvia did a great job describing how the process works and what I would need to do in order to make it look the way I wanted it to. After we agreed to do a partial foil with color that would set me up well for a balayage process at my next appointment, Sylvia gave me a great mix of bright blonde and darker lowlights. It was exactly what I asked for, and I know exactly how it will help me transition to balayage thanks to Sylvia's explanation. My cut (an angled bob) was also outstanding. Sylvia was really efficient and had my wash/cut/dry done in less than 45 mins. Great haircut for a great price! This cute little salon nestled between other cute shops and restaurants on Washington is a great find. The decor is adorable, salon clean and contemporary, and staff warm and friendly! I was offered a fresh coffee when I arrived and given a consultation, cut, and had great conversation with the stylist Sylvia for only $35! The only negative experience I had with then was a rude woman I spoke to on the phone about changing my appointment. FYI they are raising their prices by $5 starting January 1st! Even with this price increase, it's a steal and I'll be getting my locks chopped there next year! read more

After 5+ years of living in Boston and bouncing from one hair salon to the next, I am SO relieved to say that I've finally found my salon-and it's Deep Blue. Candice was beyond wonderful. She listened to my nervous chatter (I've had some UGLY hair, y'all) before being completely honest about what I need for my texture. The shampoos they use are free of chemicals and vegan, and they make your hair smell amazing. I wasn't getting a very drastic cut, just trying to fix the very weird angles left by past hair nightmares, and Candice was so great about telling me exactly what she was doing without harshing my mellow with incessant chatter. Yeah, I'm one of those people that could happily sit silently through a hair cut-but I didn't really need to, because Candice was genuinely interesting and good to talk to. The fact that the space itself is bright and clean is awesome, and I love that they are so involved as the owners. I was actually a little disappointed when they used their automatic booking system (which emails you reminders, if you are planning challenged like me) to say that my next cut wouldn't be until November. This review isn't easy to write because overall, I had a great experience at the salon...but I feel that the way my hair was styled after the cut just made it seem like it was a good cut when it really wasn't. I strive for low maintenance when it comes to hair. I like a good cut that needs minimal fuss. Sylvia listened to my concerns and since the studio opened, she has cut my hair exactly the way I like it. This place is great! Very cozy studio - easy to book appointments online, and free 2 hour parking in the back. The prices are reasonable and Candice cut 5" of my hair off pretty quickly. I was recommended Deep Blue by a friend and was excited when I finally booked an appointment. I don't dye my hair often but was looking for a cut and exciting color change. After my first visit (with Candice) ended up quite happy with the cut, but was disappointed about the color, as it was much more subtle than I had hoped. However, I emailed the salon a few weeks later explaining why I was disappointed and asking for my hair to be redone. Candice couldn't have been more responsive and kind about the request! She scheduled me quickly for another appointment and we discussed ramping up the color change. I came out of appointment #2 with and end product much closer to what I'd hoped! I recently moved out of the area but before that Sylvia at Deep Blue Salon had been cutting my hair for at least the past two years. She is amazing!! I have very curly hair and she helped me to transition from long hair to a cute above the shoulder cut to an edgy pixie cut seamlessly over the past few years. Very friendly, efficient service for a great price! The online appointment booking made it easy to set up an appointment, and I was in and out of the door for my cut (with a wash, no blow dry) in 30 mins. I got my hair cut with Candice after having the same hairdresser for 20 years, and was really pleased with how it turned out. She took off a bit more than I was expecting, but I ended up loving the cut! I have thick, coarse, curly hair and cut it in a way that feels light and is easy to handle. I love the new salon! Candice has been my stylist for a few years so I followed her to her new salon. She always does a great job with my color and cut. I'm also really happy with the product line they are carrying. I go red, which can be tricky, and at other salons sometimes it feels tingly or even burns. The product line they carry is natural - it felt fine and it looks great! I like the smell of their products too:) The online appointment system is really easy to use, and there is a parking lot with free parking! That's unusual for the area and a big bonus as I'm usually running out the door to get there in time. I was there on a Saturday and there were plenty of available spots. read more

Candice is the stylist who cut my hair, and she was great. I went in for a drastic haircut (medium length hair down to a short pixie cut) and she was really patient with me. She helped me articulate what I wanted so we could figure out how short to go. She also used only scissors the whole time, no butcher job with an electric buzzer, so you can tell she's skilled. ALL these 5 star reviews? This can't be true, said the guy who was immediately proven wrong. EVERYONE says that living in Boston must afford numerous options for haircuts. This is far from the truth. you get two things in Boston: 1; People who are overly trendy and charge too much. 2; People who think they are trendy and charge too much. I hate both these people. I seriously scanned out upwards of 30 places. I waited so long I found myself in the "You need to get a haircut, you look like a monkey" category. It is amazingly affordable; 36 bucks for a men's cut w/ tip. And seriously guys, 20 percent is the minimum you offer for a tip. This place is more on the side of minimal traditional, but has sparks of modernism. It's comfy and open. It is located in an extremely, beyond convenient location. It's located in a family oriented, safe neighborhood. The place is ridiculously calm, and finally some music that isn't the Starbucks CD on repeat. Two stylists, two chairs. FREE parking out back! Apts are sched online, which is amazingly convenient for a lad who HATES the phone. You get an email confirmation about two to three days before your apt. It had a 'please confirm link' that I almost didn't see. I sched an apt with Sylvia, mainly because the name is amazing (ok, you got me, I was that angst ridden teenager obsessed with Plath), but also because of the YELP reviews. She is young, relaxed, and gives off an air of coolness that is a great departure from the ultra uptight hairstylist. Sit down. Make a plan. Get up. Rinse (hating on shampoos by hair stylists). Sit down. Cut. doners. Slow and meticulous are the defining characteristics of her approach to cutting hair. I's hard to describe, but the traditional section off, cut, move on, repeat doesn't happen. It is all intentional and calming. There is something artsy about it, but fear not this isn't avant garde week on project runway. I can't place it, but there is something unusually different about my simple bead-head look; call it a personal touch. She is the kind of person you can trust to say "Do what you want", and this is something reviewers said to do. This is starting to sound like a book review, and I realize that I say "there is something" far too much, but if you can take home ONE thing from this, it is to sched an apt right now, but leave a space 5 weeks from now, cause I am now a regular.
