BACKGROUND: Flying JetBlue back from NY to Oakland from a great weekend trip and needed to eat at some other place than that nasty Burger place I reviewed 2 years ago run by the laziest, apathetic teen crew I've ever witnessed with 2 eyes. FOOD- 3/5 I ordered something safe (eel roll) as I wasn't impressed by the drying out sashimi pieces in the cold case at the bar. The eel roll wasn't that far off as the sushi rice was definitely on the older side and the seaweed wasn't that far off either. Not much to say, but I still ate it and didn't have a belly ache on the plane so I consider it a dining win lol. I had a Stella Artois out of the bottle. Stella my dear, you never fail me. 5/5. SERVICE- 5/5 The all Filipino service guys and gals were great. Funny conversation they were having too about life working in the airport. After having a bad experience in one food joint, I came to this place to see what they had to offer. I noticed their sushi bar, so I sat down and checked out their menu. I went with the seared tuna, and a side of rice. After about ten minutes, I had my food in front of me. In sharp contrast to the place I went to before, this place was on point. They prepared my food exactly as I ordered it. After I was done, I stayed for a bit to relax and enjoy the ambient. The staff was very friendly, and took care of me well. I paid promptly, but they still checked up on me and offered me more water. This place is clean, and I like their decor. It has a blue hue to it, and a relaxing environment. If I found myself in this terminal again, I would come back to eat here. read more

This place has surprisingly decent sushi for an airport. The interior decor is pleasant; and it's arranged into two bars, one where the emphasis is drinking, the other for dining. There are also some tables. And of course the mandatory televisions. All the sushi we had was good, if not cheap (it is, after all, an airport). Be warned, though, that the crudos don't really match their descriptions (shishito peppers became jalapenos, ingredients were missing) and the ones we tried were both topped with unmentioned olive oil. Service is pleasant but leisurely, so this is a good choice if you have plenty of time. read more

Waited thirty minutes for a tasteless, goopy, lukewarm, $16 garden omelette drowning in a lake of oil. Barely even had vegetables. On top of that, the waitress told me I couldn't get my meal to go and then the bartender said I could. Weird and disappointing experience. So much for good airport food. read more

After a very long night and morning of travel and a surprise visit to the local Jamaica hospital, my boyfriend and I were starving when we returned to the JFK airport. We also had four hours until the next flight to San Diego departed, which left us with plenty of time to visit one of Terminal 5's sit-down restaurants. Deep Blue's Asian menu caught our eye and we were impressed, especially considering the typical airport food. I ordered the chicken pineapple fried rice without the veggies or cashews. It was a simple dish but that's just the way I like it. Rice, chicken, eggs and pineapple with a dash of soy sauce for a sweet and salty combination. I surprised myself by eating the entire plate, which very rarely happens at restaurants for me. Not as surprising, my boyfriend cleaned his plate of tofu pad thai too. The only slight issue we had was that service was a bit slow but luckily we had plenty of time to spare before our flight. read more

it's just bad bad bad asian food. but when you are desperate from traveling abroad i guess this will do. I didnt want to try the airport sushi but i probably should have. it was way better than my SPICY ramen that tasted gross and bland. The noodles were overcooked and not al dente. They had this denseness to them that made it feel extremely starchy. Paired with the bland soup i felt gross just eating it. But my starving stomach craved a hot soup. They basically forgot that i ordered spicy. When they circled back up to me, he just gave me siracha to make it spicy on my own. which was fine and worked out. The service is slow. the kitchen is elswhere so they have to walk it over unless you get sushi. then its right there. maybe just stick to the sushi then? read more

The pork ramen was Yelp recommended. So I tried it. Hadn't eaten all day. Started with the noodles and broth. Pretty good, but then I took a bite of the meat. Gamey. A big no-no with pork. I stopped and left the rest. Didn't get a bite that night. Got very sick at home. The place is in need of a kitchen where a chef won't prepare meat like that, TVs without Fox News propaganda hating peoples of color and Muslims, and a big refresh on its beaten up tables and chairs (See my photo.) All of the sit-down joints in the center of T5 kind of suck. This was a move downward. read more

I eat at Deep Blue often. I fly JetBlue or Alaska more than any other airlines. JerBlue is in terminal 5, and I believe they have the whole place. Deep Blue is there too, and it is my favorite option for dinner. It is good enough that I have even stopped for a bite when on an inbound flight, rather than continue home. The menu is primarily sushi. They also have fried rice and other hot dishes. I regard the fish quality as above average for an airport restaurant. I have had the yellowtail and scallion roll many times. I also have had the ikura, salmon roe, and it is about as fresh as you'd expect at a non premium venue. The fried rice is surprisingly good and surprisingly generous in quantity. Nothing is bad. The drink selection is wide. They have, for example, two types of hard cider. The prices are not terrible. As they say, it is what it is. As is the norm given the location, everyone is either rushed or aggrieved about a flight delay. Every now and then, people are chatting, and I was next to two strangers who seemed to have made a connection. The wait staff are patient and tolerant. They are quite busy and can get crowded, but they do their best cleaning up. They seem to recognize me as a regular despite the volume of traffic. If you are nice, they will allow you to plug in if you are at the one or two seats at the bar opposite the outlet. Consistent with my standard operating procedure of trying to post what is positive (and truthful), not negative (even if honest), I have refrained on commenting about some alternatives elsewhere. Life is too short to think ill of others except as occurs inevitably for a moment. I will say that if I am on Alaska, over in terminal 7, if I have time go get through security twice, I will come here even with that hassle. I am familiar with other sushi offerings at JFK, and suffice it to say I have not written about any of that. That would allow an inference that is favorable about Deep Blue. It can be recommended with enthusiasm. read more

For an airport bar and restaurant, this place is pretty good with many Asian options of fried rice, ramen, udon, sushi, pad Thai and other favorites. We tried a few sushi rolls: a rainbow for my sister and the creamy tuna for me (roasted pineapple, avocado, tuna and cilantro aioli). Both were smaller than normal but long yet tasty and fresh. The bar was well stocked. My sister had a nice rose and I had the Voodoo cocktail (Hendrick's, cucumber, lemon, mint, and lime) which was very good. I recommend. I don't know what possessed me to get Spicy Seafood Ramen at the airport, but I thought it would be better than it was. The sushi actually WAS better than expected, maybe stick to that side of the menu. Several rice and noodle dishes are available, three ramens- the spicy seafood version has lots of seafood but the noodles and broth taste like they're out of a grocery store packet. No depth of flavor at all. Dragon Roll was fresh, liked the crisp asparagus inside. Small amount of fish in roll was overpowered by the large amount of fresh avocado wrapped around the outside. Both an alcohol bar and a sushi bar to sit at, along with two- and four-tops. Service was overworked with two servers for the entire restaurant on a Friday night. So, I had just returned from spending a month in Quito, Ecuador. What does that mean exactly? It means a heck of a lot of rice and a heck of a lot of beans. What are my favorite foods? Steak, Chipotle, and sushi. I was in JetBlue terminal 5, had some time to kill before my connecting flight to Buffalo and decided I needed to splurge for some real food. There's no Chipotle in this terminal and steak was a little out of my price range. I thought Deep Blue Sushi looked pretty swank so I stopped in. Everything on the menu sounded absolutely great but the accompanying prices were less than thrilling. I ended up getting tuna tartare and it was decent. At the end of the day, this is still airport sushi and despite how extravagant the restaurant looks, keep in mind the price you're paying for airport sushi. Service was decent, although it is usually is when you're at a table of one. Nothing out of the ordinary... I'd greatly prefer Teton Kitchen in Buffalo, New York to this A-OK sushi in Terminal 5. read more

Quick, fresh, and wholesome. After eating only sandwiches the whole day, we stumbled across Deep Blue right next to our boarding gate because mom wanted rice for dinner before the 5 hour flight. We chose a table and sat down before flagging down a server. After engaging in some small talk about where our destination was, our waiter agreed we needed to eat something a bit heavier than mere fast food. I ordered the seafood fried rice and the rainbow roll to share. The other dishes were beef fried rice, chicken curry, and chicken teriyaki. I finished every last grain of rice from the mountain of small shrimp, squid rings, and shredded crab, very hungry people here. I liked how the rainbow roll was simple with only salmon, tuna, and yellowtail toppings, none of that fancy unidentifiable stuff. Everyone left their plates clean. Cool ambiance with blue lighting, center bar with dining tables surrounding it. Expensive, but it's an airport and they cook the food fresh as you order. In and out within an hour, look around for wait staff if you're in a hurry to pay. read more

Very rude service. I asked what the asterisks meant and he not only said he didn't know but he snatched the menu from me and said if I want to asked the service sector of the cafeteria (wtf!). Then the menu doesn't specify what the additional cost for chicken/veggie/shrimp is for a plate. I ordered a shrimp pad Thai and they charged $10 to add shrimp!! I wasn't sure what to expect post-COVID and also given the (usual) mixed reviews on Yelp. We came here years ago and it wasn't really memorable but today was fantastic. Our server was amazing. We eat fully plant based and I asked him if the avocado roll was just plants. He said yes, I ordered two and said, "and then--" and he said, "Veggie fried rice." (Correct) He then asked if we wanted him to exclude the egg -- which is NOT mentioned on the menu, and was a great catch! The service here is terrible! For a restaurant in the airport, you would think they had a sense or urgency. They really had no sense of urgency or any type of customer service. It was seriously the worst restaurant I have been to, in terms of customer service. When we first walked in, they didn't allow us to sit where we wanted. They wanted to push us in this tiny little cocktail table that looked good for one person and their baggage. We asked to sit in a booth, and the server kind of gave us an attitude. It also took them a while for them to get us water. My husband had to get up and ask for waters that he could bring to the table! The food is definitely a step up from the fast food options at the airport, but it really isn't worth it. I would say eat before you get to the JFK airport, unless you are lucky enough to be at the terminal that has a Shake Shack! read more

Good place to grab something before you fly out. Terminal 5 has lots of fast food options but for an airport restaurant I was pleasantly surprised. I wasn't in the mood for sushi so I decided to roll the dice on some pork ramen. No regrets here. The soup was flavorful, not overly salty, the ramen was cooked well and the portion was large. The staff was a little overworked but they were polite and friendly. It's the airport, so I'm not exactly expecting Michelin stars. And it's not that cheap either. They play jazzy club music and bathe you in blue fluorescent light while you enjoy sushi and other Japanese and almost authentic delicacies. Stay away from the sushi! Do not be deceived by the name. The Monster roll is no monster. They overcook a tiny tempura spicy tuna roll, slice it in half, and drizzle some eels sauce and mayo over it. It is a 4 piece roll sliced to look like 8... Also, the inside is not even raw tuna anymore! I know airport prices are high, but this is basically a scam. I gave Deep Blue two stars as I have had better; a whole lot better. However, for airport food, not all that bad and much better than I had expected. But to counter that, the service was what I had expected, which was not very good. In this case, I would have to say downright lousy considering that there were only a total of five other patrons in the place. I had the Dragon Roll, which really contained some decent fish and had a good presentation. But for $18, it should have been good. We walked in early (around 5:30) and it was about 80% empty. Our server took about a half hour to take our order. The food was ok, just don't expect a real ramen meal but expect to pay the price for it. We ordered the char siu ramen. The broth doesn't have the deep and rich flavors. It might be more like what you would expect from a cafeteria. There's an annoying fruit fly or gnat that kept flying around our table. read more
