I have a 6 hr layover from Dubai back to FL. Deep Blue is one of the first restaurants I saw after the security check point. As I walked closer I saw the sushi bar. Awesome since I love sushi! The interior is colored in blue to purple hues with 2 bars in white, one sushi the other alcohol with white colored seats around each of the bars and several tables. Along the wall are benches. 5 TVs are viewable and music plays in the background. The ceiling is nicely decorated with different hues of blue circles. Service and fois are great. They have 25 different bottled beers and various cocktails including a saki tini. The menu is your traditional Japanese cuisine with a twist. I highly recommended coming here if you are in terminal 5. read more

Airport sushi? Usually, I'd take a hard pass, but I was starving and wanted something before flying back home across the country. It was a good choice, the rolls and sashimi were very good, especially the yellowtail. Prices were actually not terrible for an airport, and the quality of the fish justified the price. Got dinner at Deep Blue before a flight on Thursday night. The food is solid, but the prices are exorbitant and the environment is off-putting. Quality: Deep Blue is about as good as airport sushi comes. The fish was extremely fresh and the flavors were good. I started with a Salmon Roll, which was simple and tasty. I also ordered a specialty roll, the Crunch Red Ball Roll. It had spicy tuna, tempura flakes, crab, and avocado. A more substantial roll that had a bit a heat from the tuna and drizzled spicy mayo on top. Quantity: Two rolls are necessary to fill you up. Value: $13 for a Salmon Roll. $20 for a Crunch Red Ball Roll. Ambiance: Deep Blue is located in Terminal 5 of JFK Airport. It can immediately be identified when walking past security with its blue glow and bumping music. It has the look and feel of a futuristic club with layered ceiling and blue neon lights. Inside they have two circular bars towards the center and seating along the walls. One of the bars is a sushi bar the other is a standard bar. Televisions line the walls and trance music plays over the speakers. It is an odd setup for the airport. Crowd: Extremely busy during my visit. Nearly every seat was filled and refilled whenever someone got up. Service: Food was out relatively quick, which is helpful at the airport. Parking: Located inside JFK, so hopefully you have plans for your car. read more

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!!! My friends and I ended up leaving because the service was ridiculously negligent. You'd think you're eating at an airport so service would be expedited. Our server seemed like he was NOT in the mood to be at work, took our orders (damn near everything we tried to order was "out"). We waited for nearly an hour. He walked by us a number of times, never checked on us to even apologize for the long wait. He stood to the side and just watched us gather our bags and walk out. Didn't bother to utter a word to us. The restaurant wasn't even busy!!! I almost forgot to add how filthy the silverware and glasses were. Even after changing them out they were still dirty. Let me preface this by saying my girlfriend has IBS and was already feeling sick from drinking and motion sickness and our flight to JFK before we found the one place that had something she would be able to eat and enjoy, miso soup here at Deep Blue. We sat down to order, asked the server for the soup, and he proceeded to tell us that he didn't want to waste his time a very busy time and he didn't want to waste his time and public seating was across from the restaurant. We just walked up and picked an empty table. This older Asian man was being completely racist. We were just flat out denied service, they didn't even give a a menu to view. He had the gall to walk away shaking his head like we were the problem for wanting to order food at his restaurant. So, downright atrocious service, & I hope whoever that server was gets some karma for being such a greedy asshole. Edit: we talked to one of the head chefs who found the manager for the area (wish we remembered his name!), and he was very kind and understanding. He offered us food on the house and was very apologetic. I feel confident that he will resolve the situation with that specific waiter and knowing they did whatever they felt was appropriate. First we have to ask for server and to get us the menu and water. After placing the order we waited for 30 minutes but no food was served, but other people who arrived after us already finished their food and left, while we still waited for food, like edamame to be delivered. Out of the 5 options you are given in JFK in the mist central point of terminal 5, Deep Blue stands out by having Asian fishies and even sushi. I stayed away from raw items and went with soup and fried shrimp. I'm so basic and it was a pretty relaxing and fulfilling meal. read more

I love treating myself to a nice meal before a flight. This place looks cool, plays great music, and always has plenty of room to sit and eat. In addition, their customer service is always attentive and considerate of all your luggage and possible need to rush orders. The quality of food is good for an airport restaurant but don't expect a gourmet meal. Also they let you stay after your meal to work on your laptop or just sip some tea. Came out nice and hot and full of great flavor, good amount of "steak", straw mushrooms and noodles, but I only had one piece of 1/2 piece of asparagus. At $16 I would have liked more vegetables. Still though, I pretty full and was impressed at how good it tasted. I knew there had to be a sushi spot at this airport. I searched and I found, but then I didn't want to take the risk...not at these prices. So I ordered the Duck Confit Ramen. It was quite possibly the worse bowl of ramen I've ever had in my life. The duck was dry, the broth was bland, and the noodles were exceptionally gooey. I can't comment on the sushi or cocktails, but what I had was horrible. One star for the food. It kind of pains me to give them such a low rating because the staff was super friendly. I also think they did a pretty decent job at fancying up the décor, as best as they can do for a bright-ass airport. Deep Blue takes forever. If you board within 45 min of sitting down, you won't make your flight. Many members of the staff are unprofessional and show zero hustle. However, Steven works hard, is fast with his service and is always on the move helping customers. In the middle of a busy airport it's always nice to find a place that's a little bigger, a little less crowded, has a bar, and isn't an Applebee's or *similar name here* type restaurant. Cheap? Nope. But what airport food is? I knew I wanted sushi even before I got to the airport, so there really weren't any restaurant decisions to make - only intense, important sushi decisions. We sat at the bar - good beer selection, good drink menu. Cheers to our impending trip? You bet. We had gyoza, edamame, beef fried rice, and three rolls (tuna, salmon, yellowtail)....a few of the specialty rolls looked pretty good, but not good enough to justify the $16-$19. The beef fried rice was delicious - and the edamame was even better when dipped in the gyoza sauce. The rolls were decently sized and tasted good (probably a smidge of extra flavor added from the x-ray machines), and since I was craving sushi they really hit the spot. In the tradition of good airport restaurants, we were in and out in 20 minutes, so know you can get a meal even if you don't have a lot of time. For sushi in JFK (at least in terminal 5), good stuff lives here. read more

Its places like Deep Blue Sushi that help alleviate the stereotype of "bad airport food." Now if they can only shake that "expensive airport food" label, this place might garner a better rating. It still remains a solid, yet pricey choice for solid cuts of fish at Terminal 5. I've flown out of this terminal too many times not to try this place at least once. So of the 3 times I've been here I can safely say that the sushi, while solid, doesn't merit the semi-expensive price tag that gets most rolls within the $13-22 range. Service here has always been good and the sushi chefs on occasion will entertain counter guests with a "sample" roll which is usually a non-fancy fish + cucumber type roll. Enjoying the free wifi and exclusive seating make this place a solid outing while on the company's dime. And to those who haven't been here, this restaurant isn't much of a restaurant so much as it is a sushi bar in the middle of the terminal, sealed off with lane dividers in an otherwise open area. read more

When compared to my favorite NYC, Boston, SF sushi locations I don't think it quite compares in actual food quality but listen folks, we are in an airport here. However, with Jet Blue's transformed modern and hip terminal 5, I now am motivated to come to the airport early to dine at a place like Deep Blue. A little overpriced but hey...airport. You may ask how they cut and prepare the sushi because...airport. Well I'm staring at a finely sharp knife locked on a wire to the sushi bar. I guess knives are allowed through security as long as they are locked to a table. The yellowtail is good enough for me to order twice. The tuna tartare is pretty decent. They have a nice wine selection. Make your tummy happy with a dragon roll. They also have a trendy and hip modern vibe with several TVs and friendly staff. As I said, place this in the city and it may not do great. But then again it might. But for a spot to dine in an airport before a flight...definite 4 stars. read more

We didn't want to spend over $15 on a crappy burger or taco meal at the other food shops near our terminal, so we opted to try this lil sushi spot out for something fresh and quick. I was actually craving a salad, probably because of all the carberrific goodies I consumed during our 4 day stay in NY. We told the server that we were in a rush because our flight was leaving in less than an hour. So with ninja speed status, our server brought out our waters right away and took our orders. Within 10 minutes, our food came out! Wowza, talk about taking us seriously! Good job Mr. Waiter. My salad came out with some light dressing on the side. It was...bleh. But I needed greens in my system so I scarfed it all down. Then the real goodness came out...yes, I went back on the carb wagon, I ordered myself some fried rice. I was pretty shocked how DELICIOUS it actually was! It had some sausages with chopped up veggies and the flavor was just amazing. The rice was more sticky than "fried" probably because we're at a sushi restaurant and Japanese sticky rice should stay sticky. I pretty much licked my bowl clean before we walked over to our terminal. Honestly, if it wasn't for the speedy service and the fried rice, I probably would have given this place a lower rating. No waiters were to be found so we went to sit down. As we were about to sit, we were "greeted" by a waitress with a nasty attitude and she was oddly insistent that we sit at a different table. Okay, no problem. A different waitress took our order and she was a tad nicer. My mom ordered the seafood ramen and I ordered the snow white roll. She was done eating for 10 minutes already by the time I got the roll. We were told 3 times that the roll was almost ready: 1st time when the ramen came, 2nd when my mom was nearly done eating, and 3rd when I asked. At least warn your customers if the order is to take this long, especially at an airport restaurant! It took over 30 minutes for the roll, and it tasted like garbage. The tempura was already soggy and the sauce was disgusting. The seafood ramen was at least edible. The noodles were good, though the seafood tasted frozen. Before I finished eating, the nasty waitress strolled by and took the soy sauce. This was approximately 5 minutes after I got my roll. I was so pissed with this place. For an airport restaurant I really enjoy Deep Blue. It has a great atmosphere, dimly lit with blue lighting and white furnishings. It has a sushi bar to sit at if you'd prefer but at my recent stop over I selected a table with waiter service. I opted for the pan fried dumplings and edamame this visit with a glass of wine. The service was great and the food even better - nice and fresh and efficient. Their sushi looks good although I hesitate to eat sushi before getting on a flight as it sometimes upsets my stomach and I would hate to be on an airplane should that happen! read more

Just one--the seafood ramen had decent seafood (real crab, couple shrimps, few rings of calamari). The belly-aches -'s: - Seafood ramen for $14. I get the mark-up but the chili oil was too much. Barely found it edible. - The broth was not flavorful. Boiled water with chili oil. - Ramen was subpar. I had expected something chewy and instead got a package of thin noodles with no kick. - Settled into a spot to have some quiet after a long international flight. Within a minute the staff cranked up the volume on the flat screen next to us. Would have been nice if they had asked first. We moved. If you are in limbo waiting for your next flight I suggest not stopping at Deep Blue. It doesn't hit the spot if you are trying to find some decent Japanese fare. read more

I know, I know this is an airport restaurant I shouldn't be expecting too much. My boyfriend and I had a long layover so we decided to grab a bite to eat. After perusing the many options in the terminal, we decided on Deep Blue because I wanted some pad thai. We walked in and sat down. We felt pretty much ignored for the first 15-20 minutes of sitting down. We had to wave down a waiter to bring our waters and ask the waiter who brought our waters to take our orders because no one else was. The restaurant was by no means busy at all maybe two other parties of one with 2-3 waitstaff there. Mehhh. I would rate the food as good as food court pad thai. My boyfriend got the seafood ramen and I didn't like it at all. I honestly think the instant ramen you can make at home taste a lot better. If this place was outside of an airport, it'd get 1 star. However, sometimes you're craving sushi and willing to pay redic prices for it. Be warned - the prices on the website, outdoor sign, actual menu and your bill may all be different. I got 2 sushi rolls ( a simple one and a more complicated one) which came to about $25. One of the rolls only came with 5 pieces and the other one was also very small. The rice was dry and the fish was terrible quality. I want to preface this by saying, I live in Seattle where the fish can literally be on your plate the day it's caught. the ambience is nice, especially for the airport. Jazzy music plays in the background, subtle blue lighting relaxes you, and they have a bar. I ordered the salmon sushi, unagi sushi, and dragon roll. Something that threw me off was the rice in the sushi was hot, leaving the salmon an awkward above room temperature warm and soft texture. The unagi was better since it's usually served warm. Sushi may be one of the most dangerous edible undertakings that you can attempt prior to a long flight. In my mind, I had a feeling it would be a bad idea but ignored it and told myself that pooping your pants on a plane almost guarantees you that seating will be rearranged in your favor. Perhaps I'd even get lucky enough to score a row to myself. Any who, I knew this place had mixed reviews but none seemed to suggest any gut discomfort so I decided to proceed. The restaurant is somewhat dark and the help is not especially helpful but my food was ordered and came quickly. I decided on the chicken lettuce wraps and a black dragon roll. Despite my initial surprise at the appearance of the lettuce wraps, they were actually quite delicious, albeit difficult to put together due to the cut off the chicken. I wasn't a huge fan of the Dragon roll and found it bland and kind of mushy. Certainly not disgusting but not worth $13. Overall the food was decent and, although overpriced, came quickly and filled my craving. I think I'd chance it again if passing through JFK. read more
