Good choice for a quick bite at reasonable prices and casual atmosphere. This review is only for Deep Roots which is located in the same space as the ice cream part. They have smallish plate foods like sandwiches, wraps, salads, tacos and soups. Of the things we tried, we liked the clam chowder (chunky and not too salty), eggplant wrap (breaded), Bahn mi, and the falafel wrap (could have used a bit more protein) the most. The phoritto was okay but wasn't crazy about the wrap as the "wrapper" and it was dripping with liquid; adding a protein would have also been better. Because the sandwiches don't come with sides, portions feel smaller, hence the name street food. You order at the counter and your food is brought to you. Service was nice, though shared between the two sides of the location. Head over to the other side to get some of the best ice cream around. read more

10/10 for the ice cream alone! There are sooooo many flavors, especially unique ones! We got cannoli and chai, but we also tried blood orange chocolate chip. The staff were friendly and the seating areas were so cute. As for the restaurant side, what a fun menu! So many unique options once again. I thought it was good, but maybe not something I'd drive out for again. The BBQ pork sandwich was just a little too acidic, but the Berliner was quite nice, I'd recommend. Four adults- one vegetarian. Staff said none of the soups were vegetarian despite the webpage stating otherwise. The fried items like the potatoes in the tacos and the falafel were cooked in the same oil with the chicken rendering them not vegetarian/vegan suitable (and with a seafood allergy- shared frying doesn't work). Vegetarian had bean and cheese tacos which were described as okay but pretty sparse with just beans and a bit of cheese. The Asian tacos were returned because the meat was extremely salty- two of us tried them and the meat was inedible. The chimi chicken bites were overdone (crust was dark brown and hard) and delivered with chimi sauce, no cheese. They were ordered with cheese and chimi on the side. The Greek falafel salad bowl was satisfactory. No bottled water was available. We wanted to love the food and hope it was just an off night. The ice cream was good. Patio was nice. read more

I gave it 3 stars because the icecream is still good. We ate dinner first and I should have known by the sticky floors, dirty tables and filthy bathroom that this place no longer has the high standard of the original owners. The food was okay. My Greek giro was overstuffed with lettuce and a few pieces of chicken and very soggy. My son's chicken pieces were dry and he didn't finish them or the fries. That's never happened! Saving grace was the ice-cream. Orange chocolate chip was awesome. Good size portions. Hopefully they get their act together. read more

Amazing food! I had the Vietnamese Noodle salad, and I added tofu as a protein. The tofu had a delicious crispy crust on it, which was delicious. This is one of the best, unique salads that I've ever eaten! I was with a group of 5 other people, so we decided to go sit at the tables outside, since the weather was nice. At first, we sat at a table inside, but the top of the table was very wobbly. The next inside table we tried had the same problem. That's the only negative I can think of about this restaurant, lol. Someone needs to repair or replace the wobbly tables! My friends had the Mediterranean salad and the Falafel salad, and they all said their salads were also terrific. Deep Roots is an acceptable alternative but nothing seems outstanding. The Greek gyro was large but mostly vegetable with a thin layer of meat on top. The clam chowder was good but mot exceptional. One oddity is that they have blocked visual access to the ice cream so you cannot see what you are ordering..a very unusual practice. read more

carnitas tacos but subbed flour for corn tortilla. Three well made tacos came w/ verte sauce They were tasty, but were missing something in the flavor profile. I tried to fix it by adding a hot sauce, but they only had Buffalo sauce. It tasted like Tabasco w/ a touch of BBQ sauce, but it overpowered them, so I ate them as is. Theybwere not that good. My guests both ordered the eggplant wrap & both said it was tasty. The eggplant was not fried, it was grilled. One said there wasn't very much eggplant in the sandwich, the other said it was perfect, so there was either a consistency issue or the flavor just didn't come through. We also tried the chili & the clam chowder. The chili was sweet had no heat. It was ok, I could take it or leave it. Again, not memorable except for the excessive sugar. The clam chowder was decent. Tasty. I have eaten here before & although it has never been 5 star, it was not quite as Meh as this. I would still go back mostly out of convieninece, but I would not set my expectations too high. Always a great lunch at this wonderful spot. We sat outside on this beautiful day. I had a grilled cheese which is prepared on thick bread with two types of cheese and served with a cup of soup. I am not a fan of tomato soup so I upgraded to delicious corn chowder. My partner had a bowl with chicken, salad and rice. It was a little heavy on the rice but she enjoyed the chicken's flavor and the variety of vegies in the salad. We had no room for ice cream, but the front of this establishment serves a variety of unique ice cream flavors . Deep Roots is in the back of the building, where you're able to order at the register after reviewing the large menu on the wall. The food is brought to the table, with cutlery and condiments available at a designated station. The food was very good and tasty, although outshone by the ice cream division. The New England Poutine half portion is more than enough for 3-4 people, with a heavy covering of cheese, scallions, and bacon bits. The clam chowder is at the bottom, so be sure to mop it up. Supporting our favorite ice cream joint, we finally decided to check out the food side, Deep Roots! This place is perfect for takeout, so in these crazy times, I was glad to try this for lunch. Hubby went with the PHO-RRITO and I had the gyro. We both stuck with the housemade chips as a side (felt like $4 upcharge for sweet potato fries was a bit pricey). The phorrito was good but would've been better in bowl form since the way it was layered made you miss some of the flavors. It also could've used a sauce or dressing, it felt dry with all the veggies. The gyro was super good, great flavor, cooked perfect and balanced flavors. Would most def get this again! I tried the Rosie Chili Cheese Dog. It was OK, but nothing spectacular for $10.00. The hotdog was crossed sliced and grilled until almost burnt. The chili was bland and there was no cheese that I could see or taste. I uploaded a picture and you do see something yellow, but that is the mustard. The bun was like any grinder/sub roll I have had at a million different places. I can't see how they call it artisanal. Would I go there in a pinch? Not Grassroots II, but Deep Roots Street Food. Their ambitious Mission Statement is simple - to offer "an ever-changing menu of global street food" designed "to honor those who came before us" and "pay homage to the Great American Melting Pot". Not too shabby, is it? Their menu is inspired by foods all around the world. They sell some Hand Held Street Foods, like Falafel Sandwiches, Hot Dogs, a kebab wrap and a Banh Mi. They sell Mediterranean, Vietnamese, Indian inspired bowls and salads. Dig deeper on the menu and you'll find beef and chicken skewers, Turkish Fries, and even a temptingly named New England Poutine. Get the picture? Creativity is key here, and they do a pretty good job on their menu. We had lunch on a Saturday and I chose the Banh Mi Vietnamese Sandwich ($9.95) -with Lemongrass Beef, carrot, cucumber, and Daikon radish slivers, jalapeno slices, cilantro, and a chili vinegar dressing on a bun served with chips. The sandwich was great -a terrific mix of hot and colds and spice, with tender meat, soft bread, crunchy vegetables, and some potent jalapeno slices. Their excellent Modern Street Dog ($7.95) was a prodigious quarter pounder served with sauerkraut, sweet onions and a secret sauce. Hosmer sodas are $2.50 a bottle, we split a tangerine flavored sparkling water that was pretty good. You order and pay at the front counter where they give you a playing card on a metal stand to take to your table. Your order is delivered to your table a few minutes later. The brand-new dining room is very nice, with tan and beige walls, and dark wood accents on the lower walls and ceiling beams. They have about ten tables in their space, and another half a dozen or so in the central space between Deep Roots and Grassroots Ice Cream. We really enjoyed our meal today. I love this concept and the new space is so warm and inviting. The counter service was super friendly and lunch was speedy. The menu items unique and interesting. I tried the hairdresser salad. I liked the Mediterranean flavor explosion, all of the ingredients were fresh. The presentation was outstanding. I really disliked the moisture of the fries underneath the salad after the dressing is poured on etc. I will return and try something else. Lunch (my salad and a drink) rang in at a bit under $20. I had to wait for more than an hour to get my order. While waiting I had an ice cream from Grassroots, so wait didn't feel that bad.
