I got a Groupon, thinking it was such a great deal. Always wanted to stay here, since I'd heard many good things about it when I was younger. I took my three grandchildren (3, 8 and 9) along with my friend, her adult son and his 9-year-old daughter, on our first "vacation" in at least 10 years, for a weekend. It ended up costing me $540 for a two-night stay in a dump. After buying the Groupon, I was advised it would cost and additional $20 per night per person after the first two. Oh, well, it was my granddaughter's 8th birthday celebration and my friend's 56th. Was told there would be a "gift bag" waiting in the office. The manager was in when we arrived on Friday late afternoon. He "checked" us in and told me my gift bag was on the table behind me. I took the one with my name on it and "Pond Cottage", which is what I booked. We drove the short distance to the cottage, and were charmed by the outside - really rustic. I opened the "gift bag", which held two things: the key to the cottage and a one-page list of rules, which advised that we had to do all the dishes and put all the bedding in the washer before leaving. Huh, okay. We went in, and at first glance were delighted with the interior. It had two bedrooms, what looked like what had been stated on their website as a "gourmet kitchen," a beautiful fireplace, nice hardwood floors, and a decent size flat panel television and movies, since there was no cable or satellite. After ten minutes, I was appalled - there were dead flies on the floor, a cigarette butt under the dining area table, the fireplace couldn't be used - it was blocked off with cheap candles and holders inside; many of the dishes were in the cupboards dirty, counters dirty, no salt in the disposable salt holder, the hot tub on the back deck was almost too cold to go in for 24 hours after we got there with no chemicals in the holder for the water. There were holes in several walls, including in one of the bedroom closets, both bathrooms were inside the bedrooms, which meant those sleeping in the living room had to wake the occupants to get to the bathroom during the night. The toilet in the bathroom closest to the living area plugged within an hour of our arrival, after just one person's use, and I couldn't find the manager anywhere all weekend. On top of that, the water from the faucet smelled distinctly like petroleum oil, and when I made a pot of coffee, I had to throw it out because it tasted horrible and left a greasy ring at the water line after I poured a cup. The kitchen was big, and had a nice island, but there was very little we could use to cook hamburgers or steaks on. The fridge did not keep things cold enough, not enough hot water for more than two kids and one adult for showers/baths. On Saturday morning, my 9-year-old grandson and my friend's 32 year old son, were both ill, and the only thing they did different from the rest of us was drink the water. They were sick for several hours, and queasy for several more. At 3:00 I cancelled our reservation for the birthday dinner we were going to have at the resort's restaurant - we'd watched a few people wandering around inside the restaurant, but never saw any customers, and a neon sign said "home cooking". Seriously, $20 to $30 entrees for home cooking? We ended up going to Rosario, who took all seven of us, who were not dressed for it, without a reservation at 5:30 on a Saturday, nine days before Halloween, and treated us like we were royalty for four solid hours, and the birthday desserts were on them! We went back to the dump and spent a bit of time watching movies, then, after everyone else had gone to bed, my friend's son and I sat outside on the back deck watching the wildlife, the stars, and the innkeeper bopping in and out of his pole shed/shop until 4:00 in the morning, just like we had the first night. This is the only times we ever saw the innkeeper aside from when I checked in. When I checked out on Sunday morning, the office was open, but no one was there. I discovered a red wall phone next to the doorway, which the sign said could be used to contact the innkeeper. I dialed the numbers on the instructions and got an answering machine. I left a long, detailed message about the cottage, which my friend, who works for the US Postal Service, heard in its entirety, and asked the innkeeper to call me the next day to discuss the problems. He never did. A few days after we got back home, I contacted Groupon and over a few days, was advised that they tried to talk to the innkeeper about this but he wouldn't do anything. Groupon was kind enough to give me $75 in Groupon Bucks for my trouble, which I didn't expect - I honestly didn't expect anything from anyone except an apology and for the resort to fix the problems for future occupants, especially the water problem. In short, we could have gone to any fleabag motel and gotten better accommodations for a third of the price. DON'T STAY HERE! read more
