The plethora of hotpot places in Richmond can sometimes be monotonous...that is until I tried Deer One. It surprised me that the former Deer Garden restaurant ventured into this concept, something that has popped up in every corner of the city. But having been in the noodle soup business for years, they clearly know the ropes. What made them more special is the unique selection of ingredients that others didn't carry. They have beef tendon, ox tongue, beef lung, beef shank, fish maw, pork liver among other choices. They have several delicious soup bases too. After all, didn't they start the concept of personalize-your-own-noodle-soup concept. They also have a wide variety of snacks to choose from. As for dessert, ice cream and steamed egg with black sesame paste. Parking is convenient and free for 2 hours. Restaurant is well lit and spacious in a new building on Park Road Servers are accommodating and alert.

I am truly on a mission to review all the Bigway copycats, except I may have stumbled upon a place that outdoes their concept in quality and taste. Deer One is Deer Garden's Bigway concept located on Park Road across from Richmond Centre. There is easily accessible parking on the side (follow the blue 'P' sign) and you can register your plate with the restaurant. The interior is clean and bright and follows the typical order of any instant hotpot place. The selection here is S tier - there is beef tendon, tripe, varieties of innards, beef tongue and the list goes on. Their house special marinated beef and chicken is also delicious! Most importantly, they got the best asian vegetable - pea tips (no one can change my mind). They also individually package their noodles, which I find sanitary and easy to work with. I love their tomato soup base as it leans towards the sweeter side but still tastes natural and not too salty. Because of their social media promotion, we also received some fried snacks (Korean seaweed roll). I also received a free bubble tea as part of their student promo for all pots over $20. The sauce bar also includes pickled tuber, a S-tier side dish in Chinese cuisine! Most importantly, I have no idea what their ice cream recipe is, but it is amazing and reminds me of Hokkaido milk ice cream from Japan. They also provide a warm custard dish for those who don't want a cold dessert. Overall, the level of choices and quality of those choices make this place great. The only downside is that I generally spend more here compared to Bigway especially if I am craving all those varieties of house special marinated meats, tendon, and more. If I remember correctly, the cost per 100 grams is also higher due to the premium selection of ingredients. My pots average $20-$25 here as opposed to $18-$20 at Bigway. The staff and service were also seamless and smooth. There is an online waitlist, but generally, this place is relatively quiet, especially on weekdays. Can't wait to be back soon Deer One!

Free 2 hour covered parking. Register your plate number when you get to Deer One. Service is quite good, fast and friendly. The place is clean and quite spacious. We got shown to our seats with our own bowls. It is pretty easy to navigate through the many selections. They have a very good meat selection, reminds me of what they have at Deer Garden. They have similar side dish offerings as Deer Garden. I had the pork bone broth with my meat selection. I find the broth to be more watered down here. I preferred the bone broth from Piping, it's creamier and tastier. For dessert, I opted for the Black Sesame Egg Custard (to take home, too full to eat anymore) over the Black Sesame Ice Cream. Overall, pretty good experience. We didn't feel threatened to leave after we ate, like other hotpot places. We would definitely come back.

This self serve hot pot spot was pretty spacious and there's free parking. You can get a drink for $3 with your hot pot. I tried the Tan Tan soup base which was a bit more mild tasting that I expected but not bad. They also have some fried snacks but I didn't try them. For dessert they have ice cream or a warm black sesame custard dessert which was nice.

Visiting yet another self serve hotpot spot! This time at deer one which was made by the same owners as deer garden! They offer more organ meats than other hot pot spots I've been to so if you're into that, this spot might be worth a try! Soup bases are pretty classic with pork bone, tomato, satay, tom yum and spicy pepper amongst others. Service was pretty quick and I like that they have 50% off drinks if you buy a hotpot! My only note is that they have a minimum spend of $15 per person so if you're usually someone who gets hotpot as a snack, you might need to take food home.

Unfortunately, I really didn't like my experience here. The parking and registration went fine and the service was okay, but the ingredients were not very fresh and my broth and my friend broth tasted awful. We got the collagen bone broth and the pepper sour collagen broth, the collagen bone broth tasted like absolutely nothing... And the white pepper sauerkraut broth was awful. Tasted like white pepper ONLY and it was very very overpowering. Would not visit again.

I didn't realize it was a chain with three locations in Metro Vancouver. We entered and the place was moderately busy. We were seated immediately. Rather typical looking restaurant but it was clean. Tables had QR codes for the menu and to place orders. We tried three things: - Deep Fried Durian Balls: Good. Becoming a fairly common dish now. Despite not liking fresh durian , I don't mind eating this. Outer layer is crisp and not too thick. - Rice Noodle with Tomato Broth: Good. Comes still boiling. Decent size, variety of toppings and a slightly thicker broth than most. Rice noodles are a bit soggy, but being all you can eat rice noodles is a nice feature for big eaters. - Yang's Chicken Rice Boneless: Good. Also comes boiling. Chicken is tender, and mushrooms have intense flavour. Service is minimal, but helpful. Overall, we were happy with our food as it was good, fast, and affordable. Not something I would crave, but a reliable option if I'm in the area again

We got in just before the dinner rush so were seated right away at the last open table. This place is a legend in itself, since their original location. Shanghainese place. We ordered: hot + sour soup - solid 4/5. Could use more heat but I like the level of acidity and they were generous with the veg/shrimp in it. Add some chili oil and you're good. XLB - theirs are big, and thin skin but still holds up well. Theres an aunty standing behind the counter making them nonstop. We got the regular pork ones and they were great. Absolutely loaded with soup (seriously, most soup in xlb ive seen in a long time) and the pork filling was nice and juicy. 5/5. shen jian bao - a lot less dense than most versions. Still quite light, and the bottom was nice and crispy. Filling was the same as the xlb. Also loaded with soup. This might be my fav version of this dish. 5/5. sauerkraut fish soup with noodles - I think this was made to cater to a more canto crowd, and I like it. Its lighter, much less greasy, and much less salty. Fish slices were cooked to perfection, still with some bite and not mushy. The purists may not like it but you can eat a lot of this and not feel sick. Could use more of the pickled greens though. 4/5. Total bill was $65 + tax and tip for 2 ppl, and we took home enough food for 1 meal. The restaurant itself is utilitarian. clean, somewhat modern and comfortable enough. There are some big screens showing stuff on TV. You can order with the waitress or use the QR code and order from your phone. Cash or debit only. Come here for no frills, high-value shanghainese food that is surprisingly light. Definitely recommend. Theyve been around for a long time for good reason.

Keep in mind they won't seat you unless your entire party has arrived. The total came to less than $30 per person, which is great value for money in Vancouver. While the xiao long bao and sheng jian bao were definitely the highlights of our lunch, I enjoyed all of the dishes. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for Shanghai cuisine in Vancouver. Xiao Long Bao ($9.25) Even with my questionable chopstick skills, the wrapper didn't break at all, which shows how well they're made. The broth was flavorful, with plenty of meat inside. I just wish the dipping sauce had a stronger ginger profile. Pan-Fried Pork Dumplings / Sheng Jian Bao ($8.50) Crispy on the bottom with a fluffy top. Interestingly, they have the same soup filling as the xiao long bao. Meat & Vegetable Wonton in Peanut Sauce ($12.95)This was the only dish I've never had in Shanghai (my friend told me it's commonly served in the summer, when soup dumplings would be too hot). Wine Chicken ($15.95)It was cute how they served this dish in a tall pot. It looks small, but there's actually a decent amount of tender chicken inside. Fragrant without being overwhelming. Crispy Rice with Salted Egg Sauce ($21.95)The flavor profile reminded me of Singaporean-style salted egg fried chicken (which sadly doesn't seem to exist in Vancouver). The crunchiness adds a nice balance to all the dumpling dishes we had.

The space was clean and our food arrived fairly quickly. We ordered the fried chicken and beef brisket soup curry. The spices weren't as strong and fragrant as the one we had in Sapporo which is what made it so memorable for me the first time. It was also a bit salty for my liking. But the fried chicken piece was about double the size than the one in Sapporo! Perfectly juicy and the crispiness is a nice contrast to the soup and soft vegetables. Beef brisket was soft and tender but would pick the fried chicken over the brisket. The rice was a bit lackluster compared to the more fragrant one in Sapporo. It's hard to compete with soup curry from the motherland, but this is still worth trying if you're looking for something different from the usual ramen or sushi.

I also liked all of the other veggies - broccoli tomatoes corn etc. the soup is on the peppery side but has a great soft flavour to it. I also added eggplant which had great texture. The rice is also very unique. It is more like whole grained rice and feels healthy. Its texture contrasts with the soup and goes well with it I think. However, I was a bit disappointed but not too much as prices were decent depending on what you get. We got the chicken laksa, Nasi goreng, Mongolian chicken, and kuih lapis. Chicken laksa is the ideal order as the soup is decent and the pricing is fair. It is not the best as the soup didn't carry much flavor and the noodles were a bit on the softer side. It was filling however. Nasi goreng is solid. The vegetables felt frozen reheated and wilted, but at least the cucumbers were fresh. The amount of shrimp, squid, and fish cakes was dismal. Flavor profile is good. The Mongolian chicken is okay. It's not fried as the batter is quite soft. It is saucy which my friends were craving. I enjoyed the flavor profile of this one though. The dessert is good. Kuih Lapis is a colorful dessert so it appealed to me in both taste and presentation. One red flag I noticed is that I heard beep after beep of microwave sounds. It's as if all the dishes they prepared well in advance and just reheat for us, plus they walled off the kitchen and the back completely, giving the impression that they want to hide something.
