I grew up in the area, but having been away for 6+ years, I didn't know about this bakery until returning home last weekend ... with some recently developed food allergies. Three months living gluten free/dairy free, and I feel like I haven't had anything REALLY good. This place changed that. It was a Saturday morning, so I was able to enjoy a chocolate glazed donut! I picked up a loaf of bread (all of their frozen bread was on sale!) and picked up two cupcakes for a gluten free relative. The cupcakes were amazing, the donut was amazing, and thought I haven't dug into the loaf of bread yet, I'm already planning on placing an order soon since they are willing to ship! Be careful when buying things here. I thought (incorrectly) that everything was vegan. I bought $13 snicker doodle cookies, ate 3 only to read the label and see that there were eggs in it. I was so disappointed. I have been vegan for over a year, and felt like I betrayed my body and the poor hens. :( I gave the cookies to a non-vegan friend. They were delicious, but just make sure you read the labels if you're vegan and buying anything from here. I would be willing to go back, the staff were all very pleasant, and we also got a vegan pizza which was delicious! I used to love Dee's. They have so many great dairy free desserts that are delicious. However, I won't go back now. I had a cupcake decorating party so I ordered cupcakes. I did not want or know that the cupcakes would be predecorated. There were orange sprinkles. I needed this for a bachelorette party that was completely pink. Who uses orange sprinkles in July? I had to pay for my order and buy all new ones that were premade in the case, which was not the preferred cupcake choice. They were not accomodating. I've been wanting to go here for the past 2 months and finally made it. I bought 2 donuts (coconut and gingerbread) as well as a butternut squash ravioli package. I really like that they have gluten free pasta options as well as baked goods. The donuts were AMAZING, very moist and the frosting was perfect. The pasta was good too (I've gotten used to gluten free pasta, so I might be biased). I've heard mixed reviews on the cakes, but I can only speak for what I've tried. read more

This is hands down my most favorite bakery ever. I literally dream about their pizza and even though I live an hour away I find time to go there and treat myself to the deliciousness that envelopes all the goods there. The sheep cheese pizza is the best pizza I have ever had, & even those who do not have food allergies have agreed with me. Same goes for their cupcakes. My sister did a tasting of various bakery's cupcakes for her wedding, and we all chose Dee's for the best one! They were moist & fluffy,& just perfect! I love their black & white mousse bars, it satisfies my chocolate cravings & then some! As someone who has corn, wheat, & cow dairy food allergies, Dee's bakery is heaven sent. When I lived 2000 miles away for a decade, I often wondered if there was a way to ship their pizzas to me.. I believe they do mail some items, but I just always made sure I flew into Hartford so I could make Dee's my first stop going home. (It's really that good) They even have a loyalty program/app, which free food is always exciting (especially when I can actually safely eat it!) Sister, Kelsey W., was in town for the weekend and we had some time to kill, so we ended up at Dee's One Smart Cookie! Kelsey is gluten free, and I had heard about Dee's, so we gave it a whirl. The store itself is adorable. Very small, but bright colors and fluent layout create a nice space. The staff is very knowledgable and helpful. Kelsey and I picked out many treats for her flight home, as well as some for me to have just at home. I chose the apple oatmeal bar and a chocolate chunk cookie (egg free also). Kelsey got a magic bar, snicker doodle cookies (I think), and an egg free blondie. Total for those five things, it came to $19. I was a little baffled at the price, but Kelsey informed me that it was pretty on point with other gluten free bakeries. Since I can't speak for Kelsey's goodies, I'll give you my thoughts on my apple oat bar and cookie. The apples themselves were very good and moist, but the crust very crumbly and didn't stay together too well. Overall I found the bar a little bit disappointing, as I just had a very time keeping it together and eating it. The flavor was good. The chocolate chunk cookie was divine. It was not crumbly or dry at all, and the chocolate:dough ratio was perfect. I am definitely going back to try more menu items- the pumpkin cupcake, lemon bars, apple cupcake, blondie, pizza... all looked very good! read more

I have occasionally brought home items from Dee's and everyone asks, "Are you sure this is gluten free?" and once I got a, "Did they make a pack with the devil for these recipes? They are so good." Brownies and cupcakes are great. They post what they will be making on Facebook and are quick to respond to any questions on-line or in the stop. They staff is genuinely friendly and are patient. They do special holiday menu items that you can order ahead for special occasions. My only disappointment has been their donuts. They are noticeably different from regular donuts. read more

They really should post a schedule of when they plan on baking things since they won't hold things for you without a deposit. My first experience with Dee's was shortly after they opened. The products were wonderful. They accommodated my allergies. Today I cannot eat their gluten free flour products as the flour contains potato. The flourless cake contains coconut milk, to which I am highly allergic. They did not previously use those products, and will not accommodate those sensitivities. I no longer have a source of baked goods. Very disappointing. read more

I have gone to just about all Gluten free bakeries in CT. By far this place is the best. None of their items taste gluten free. They have a great variety. The donuts are amazing. Highly recommend them. I hope to see Paleo products in the future here with the growing demand and many allergies it would be a success. Sometimes I feel like I wouldn't be able to get through this life, these allergies, without knowing Dee's exists. I may not be able to visit as often as I'd like, but know that I can actually purchase tasty foods despite my allergies makes this life livable! I'm allergic to gluten, dairy, soy and yeast. Her bean bread (yeast free) is a life saver. It's so nice to have the occassional reuben or toast with breakfast. She also does rolls around the holidays with the bean bread that are amazing. But let's be honest here, the best, most mouth watering treat is her Sunbutter brownies- they're decadent brownie squares with chocolate chunks and Sunbutter swirls. This item is probably in my top 3 ways to consume chocolate ever, which is no small feat. I certainly don't want to sell the rest of her product catalog short either though- I've really enjoyed everything I've ever had there, with the exception of the stuffing mix (prior to knowing about my yeast allergy), but that could easily be my fault. I have, however, made stuffing from a loaf of her bean bread and it was awesome. The shop isn't especially handicap accessible, as it's a very tiny shop. If there are multiple shoppers in there at once things get a little crazy, but they work fast to move the line. read more

We traveled over an hour after hearing a gf bakery even existed! The trip was WELL WORTH IT AND SO HAPPY!!!! Because of my sons allergies we have all be gluten free (and better for it!) for almost a year. AMAZING! Having never been to Dee's, I took a chance and drove over an hour to pick up a cake for my boyfriend's 30th birthday. All I can say is not only was the cake the best Gluten Free cake I've ever had, it's one of the best cakes I have ever tasted... EVER. We ordered a chocolate cake with mocha frosting, which was absolutely divine! The cake itself had and amazing consistency, not too dense or gooey like other GF products we've tried, and the frosting was absolutely amazing. I'm not allergic to any food ingredients and I love Dee's! I had a blueberry lemon glazed doughnut and it was so moist and delicious. (Doughnuts only available on Saturdays). I also bought a bunch of cupcakes and pizzelles for my friend who's allergic to nuts and they were fabulous also. It's so great that there's such a wide selection of allergy-free goods! So my second trip I had gotten the chocolate raspberry cake, lemon square and chocolate mousse bar. Amazing. Will probably be a weekly stop for me from now on. read more

This review score is the average of the taste of the food (very good) and the customer service (horrendous). My wife recently ordered two cakes for birthday parties in a short span of time. The first cake had minor variations from what she had requested for the decorations, but nothing significant enough for her to say anything. The second cake, however, was significantly different in decoration than what she requested. The girl at the counter repeatedly insisted that she must have ordered it wrong, despite it being decorated in a color scheme that my wife, who decorates cakes as a hobby, would never request. When she asked if my wife wanted her to fix it, she was told no, because we were in a hurry. She then proceeded to take the cake in the back, anyways, and redecorate it, with no input from my wife, causing us to be late for the party, with a cake that still was not at all like it was requested. We left a message that we wanted to speak to the owner, and were called back by someone else, who also insisted that my wife must've ordered it wrong, although in a much more polite manner than the first girl. When my wife insisted on speaking with the owner, she was told that she was busy, but would call her back. At no point did anyone express that they were sorry that the order was wrong or make any effort to make the situation right. The owner called back, but said that she had a bad connection and asked to call back the next day. Several weeks have passed and we have never heard from them again, so we are left to assume that they just don't care all that much about customer satisfaction, which is a real shame after 5 years of purchasing items there and recommending them to others. read more

I called to have some cupcakes delivered for my dear friend's 40th birthday. I live out of state in Austin, TX (I had another bakery in CT deliver to friends for me several times previously, but they lost my business - My Dream Cupcake....read my other review on them...not impressed.) and was happy to find a place with 5 stars! I called and while they don't normally deliver, since my friend's office was in Glastonbury, and I called a couple of days in advance, the lady I spoke with on the phone was VERY accommodating and said it would be no problem. I ordered the cupcakes with ease by being able to see their products on the website, she had some suggestions for decorations to make them special, and they were delivered on time the day requested. The pricing was very reasonable, and no major up-charge for local delivery. My friend said they were AMAZING!!! Great products and great customer service go a LONG way. Good gluten free baked goods are incredibly hard to find. When you stumble upon someplace like Dee's One Smart Cookie, you put it in your navigation system under "ABSOLUTE Favorites!" Everything I've tasted is incredible. The sandwich bread is tender and soft. The brownies are chewy and moist. The cupcakes... oh the cupcakes! Before traveling to Glastonbury from Washington DC to visit relatives, I found Dee's on-line and made a special point to visit. I was extremely pleased that I did. Her products are amazing. I love baked goods and have missed them sorely since becoming gluten-free and dairy-free. I bought the sandwich bread, the lemon pound cake, and several kinds of cupcakes. As we were leaving, Dee even gave me a bag of garlic sticks gratis. The next morning (Saturday), I arrived early to buy the fresh donuts. All were great. The food has great taste and does not have the crumbly consistency of most gluten-free products. A week later, before heading home, I stopped by to restock.
