My husband and I are extremely pleased with the high-quality hardscape and landscaping work done by Del Mar Landscapes, owned by Doug Kepner. We felt we received solid value for the price, especially in comparison to what other companies offered in their bids. I don't write many online reviews, but I feel compelled to give a shout-out to our wonderful crew of Jason, ​Jaime, Junior, Jesse, ​and Aviv, under the leadership of the many-talented Ramón. We had sought four bids on this complicated front and back yard project, which involved multiple dumpsters' worth of demo, new concrete, a retaining wall, drainage​ alterations, irrigation, and planting, while also accommodating tricky slopes and ​some existing hardscape areas​ we wanted to keep. Del Mar Landscapes won our business for three reasons. First, although owner Doug Kepner's cost estimate was lower than the other bids, he assured us that he wouldn't be cutting corners quality-wise, employment-wise, or insurance-wise. (He attracts and retains excellent workers by paying and insuring them properly, and in his words, "These guys don't know how to do a half-assed job.") Del Mar Landscapes' cost savings were due to two facts: ​Doug was willing to offer us many of the materials and ​rental items like dumpsters at his own cost, and he has no office staff or rendering staff to add to the costs of the actual construction. ​T​he larger landscaping companies we consulted had professional-looking packets and offered 3D computer renderings to help us visualize the project. While these perks were appealing, the competing bids also came with significant markups​ on every line item, presumably to pay for the additional overhead. Working with Del Mar Landscaping means having a more direct relationship between what you pay and the construction work you get. The downsides of this are that you don't get pretty pictures to look at, and you may need to refer to your own written notes when double-checking changes and additions agreed on orally after the initial contract is signed. The second thing that won us over was ​our confidence in Del Mar Landscapes' ability to be flexible and change things on the fly in response to terrain challenges, or simply to things we changed our minds about. Doug, Ramón, and the team were able to draw on their expertise and present us with options in response to actual site conditions, which included a few surprises along the way​. (For example, during demo, some buried drains and sewer access points were discovered in inconvenient spots, and the slopes of the existing hardscape made the transitions we had originally envisioned to new concrete areas impossible without some clever adjustments they recommended.) Third, Doug's pride in his top-notch crew was obvious, and ​that pride ​convinced us that we would be very happy with their work. This proved to be the case. They showed up promptly and cheerfully during the two hottest weeks of the year, kept the worksite immaculately clean and organized, and everything they touched looked fabulous. I was struck by the fact that everyone on the worksite seemed to enjoy each other's company, and when overhearing my compliments for a teammate's work, others would often chime in to brag about each other's particular talents. I still remember the​ serene enjoyment on Jaime's face as he stuccoed our beautiful new retaining wall like the master craftsman he is. Ramón did a stellar job of accommodating our last-minute changes and additions gracefully, with transparency about what the half-day of extra labor would cost us. Doug, Jason and the whole team were professional, communicative, and did excellent work to turn our awful looking yard into a living space we can come to enjoy for years. Doug was especially helpful in collaborating with our other two contractors to make sure all the concrete work was set up correctly for the next two contractors who were going to build upon it. We interviewed 8 vendors for our backyard landscaping project and met with many of them on multiple occasions. We narrowed it down to 3 and had a very tough decision between Del Mar Landscapes and our other 2 final choices. We decided to go with Del Mar Landscapes based on the breadth of services they offered as we had multiple elements we wanted as part of our project and no other vendor was able to complete all of them. We couldn't be happier with the outcome!! Doug was very easy to work with throughout the process and has a strong team that takes a lot of pride in their workmanship. Case in point, we were having a deck built as part of this project and had a specific type of railing we wanted. The lead builder for our deck spent a good amount of time researching the materials we should use to get the look we were going for and was even doing so over the Thanksgiving holiday break. The end result turned out gorgeous and was even more beautiful in person than we had imagined. In addition to a strong team, Doug himself was incredibly easy to work with especially when changes came up. No matter how much planning you put into a design, it is nearly impossible to know how every square inch of your space is going to look until it starts to come together. I've worked with contractors in the past that would have nickel and dimed us for every minor change, but Doug was very reasonable and flexible when changes came up and was able to easily accommodate us. He was also able to offer several aesthetically appealing suggestions and functional solutions to work within our budget. We hired Del Mar Landscape based on reviews and a positive interview with Doug. We had high hopes that this project would go smoothly and with the professionalism that Doug promised. We should have known from the first day when the crew was supposed to start and no one showed up.... Doug only showed up on days when he wanted money. He never came on any other days to check on progress. Doug was not happy that we wanted stacked stone patio pillars and BBQ island. He said we changed our mind, even though we had made it a point from the very beginning that this was what we wanted, even when he kept wanting to do something else. The way our contract was written up, he didn't account for the labour of doing the stone and this caused him to get upset with us, even though it was his error. The bbq island counter was cracked and when we pointed it out, we were told that that's what happens sometimes. It has gotten considerably worse in the last eight months since the project was finished. The flower bed/grass cement border was measured incorrectly (by the Del Mar crew) and now we have an unfinished and conspicuously patched border. When we ask if that could be fixed we were told that a whole new batch of cement would have to be ordered and that was just too much work and money. We were made to feel like all these mistakes/flaws in workmanship were our fault and that this was the way things were going to be. These are only a few of the things that have gone wrong and have led to our disappointment in hiring Del Mar Landscape. I am not sure what we did to not receive the same excellent service and workmanship that everyone else who has written a review claims to have received. We didn't change our mind, complain, demand or interfere with the project. We wish we could figure where we went wrong.... When Doug came by for his final payment, he couldn't even be bothered to come outside to see the final project. read more

We had to remove a very large 50 yr old tree w invasive roots. We also wanted to remove the grass and replace it with drought tolerant plants & drip hoses & add lighting & pavers. Other contractors would only do parts of the project and you were left trying to coordinate the project. She can measure & draw up your design and she works closely and patiently to match your style, needs, budget and interest. She is very intuitive and experienced. Working with Doug and his crew was a great experience as they updated my backyard which needed a lot of work. The project included removing existing grass, stump grinding, concrete pouring, artificial turf installation, and installing a fence on an existing brick wall. After I first reached out to the company for an estimate, Doug came by the house in a timely manner to survey the yard, and he provided a quote that fell in line with my expectations. I ended up going with him after comparing to a few other contractors based on the services he provided, cost, and a friend's recommendation. During the entire process, Doug and his team proved knowledgeable, professional, and did a good job communicating as the project moved along. I also appreciated that they were patient with me as I asked numerous questions during the process just so I knew what was going on. Doug also made some recommendations along the way without being too pushy which I appreciated as I'm very wary of businesses exaggerating the need for something just to drum up more work. I was very impressed with the end result after just a little over a week of work. Doug and his crew gave my backyard a much needed face lift while giving me, my wife, and our two dogs the ability to enjoy the backyard and invite guests over once the 'Rona is over. The concrete pour for our patio was very cleanly done, and looks great, no cracks or uneven surfaces. The artificial turf was nicely laid out, and I can't notice any uneven areas which was a concern of mine. Lastly, the fence looks amazing, very professionally done, and gives me relief knowing one of my dogs can't jump over and provides some privacy. We had been waiting several years to redo our yard, which originally had been poorly installed by a previous contractor. I saw Del Mar Landscape and read the reviews and decided to give them a call. I got Doug on the line on the first try and had a good conversation about the job. We planned to meet and over the following week developed a scope of work, cost, and schedule. I felt confident in the company's capabilities and integrity after my initial interactions with Doug and when his crew came on site , they were well prepared and executed the work start to finish, as promised. We wanted to finish our backyard by planting our hill. I found Del Mar Landscape in the home improvement mailer. Doug Kepner responded to my call right away and came out to our house. We were impressed with Doug because he gave us several ideas for our hill and recommended a small 2 foot retaining wall. We told Doug we had a budget to follow, he was great to work with. His crew was prompt and fast, finishing our hill with not only plants, but drip line and decomposed granite on the pathway. We went over budget, but only because we asked Doug if he could add a small bocce court. His work exceeded our expectations, the bocce court looks fantastic for the low cost. Doug also recommended Palm Springs Gold crushed rock between the bocce court and hill. My wife wanted to add more plants than Doug initially bought, but Doug was great in having his crew dig the holes and add the additional plants. Overall we are very pleased with the work that Del Mar Landscape did on our backyard hill and would recommend him. His crew even came out 1 month after they finished to fix some bender board that broke loose and level the bocce court. We couldn't be happier and now have a finished backyard. I needed some work done on my backyard hill side. Doug came by the house and we discussed different ideas for my steep hill. We elected to go with five (5) separate retaining walls along with some decorated rock. In addition, we selected various palms/plants (drought tolerant) for the hill side. Of course, installing a "drip" system to ensure adequate watering was a priority. Finally, Doug and his Team suggested to finish off the hill side with some decomposed granite (DG). Wow ! I must say that my wife and I was very impressed with the final results. This major undertaking took about 5 days to complete. Doug's crew were always on time and did a great job cleaning up at the end of each day. Overall, I was pleased with the outcome and total cost of the project.
