My friend and I came here a few weeks ago for lunch on a Sunday and there were plenty of tables available. There is also plenty of parking since this is in Stanford Shopping Center where CPK used to be. We split the rigatoncini and the hot honey pizza. The pizza was good, but the pasta was extremely undercooked (almost hard in the center, not even al dente). We didn't see our waiter very much or we would have said something about the pasta. We needed to flag down a different waiter to ask for more water. Where California Pizza Kitchen once stood now stands Delarosa, located on the north side of the mall along Sand Hill Road. We arrived after the lunchtime crowd and decided to try their weekday Happy Hour, which runs from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. The table we were initially seated at was a little small, so the host graciously combined two tables for us. One thing we appreciate is having enough room for all of our dishes without feeling cramped at a small table. The modern, light-wood interior is spacious, with a combination of booth, table, bar, and patio seating. I especially love the brick, wood-fired pizza oven on display in their open kitchen. We started with their Happy Hour drinks: the Classic Margarita for $8. The price was good; however, the glassware seemed a bit small. I'm not sure whether this is their normal serving size or if it was reduced for Happy Hour. Either way, the margaritas were refreshing, just what we needed after a day of walking around and shopping. For our small plates, we ordered: * Meatballs ~ Spicy tomato sauce and crostini. The two meatballs were tasty, and the tomato sauce had a very natural, clean taste. The standout item was the toasted crostini. It had a wonderful grilled flavor, and we could see the toasty, blackened marks. * White Prawns ~ Five large prawns in a garlic, butter, lemon, and saffron sauce. These were super tasty, and I loved that they were served in a mini cast-iron dish. * Capricciosa Pizza (not part of the Happy Hour menu) ~ Marinara, provolone, prosciutto cotto, artichokes, cremini mushrooms, and sausage (additional topping). We ordered their Classic Margaritas, a great deal at $8, but we are not sure if the cocktails were smaller than regular size. Their Meatballs were full size, firm but tender, served with a slightly spicy tomato sauce with two pieces of toasted bread. Classic Italian marinara meatballs. Their White Prawns, 5 big pieces, were sautéed in a garlic butter sauce with a hint of chili and saffron and served with two pieces of toasted bread. Prawns were cooked firm with garlicky butter flavors that didn't overwhelm. We also ordered the Capricciosa pizza with added sausage. The thin crust wood fired pizza came with prosciutto, artichoke and wild mushrooms. A very good pizza with texture and flavors to satisfy most pizza cravings. Our waiter was Bobby and was very pleasant and informative on what to try, being it was our first time here . The ambiance is cute and warm, seemed like a great lunch or happy hour spot, but could also see it being a good date night spot. Unfortunately, the service doesn't quite fit the vibe. When we asked our server how he was, he just said "tired." When we asked for recommendations, he said he'd only eat one of the pastas and wouldn't even want to try the rest. Although we were quickly seated, our server was nowhere to be seen for over 15 mins. We were about to get up and leave when we decided to flag down another server (Xavier?). He was apologetic, took our drink orders, and went about trying to get our server. Said server still did not show up, so Xavier (?) took our order when he brought our drinks. Our Beet salad shortly arrived and we wondered where our Onion Focaccia was going to show up. Well, it showed up just before our pizza showed up. Talk about most of the items being premade! I would describe their dishes as simple Italian inspired dishes that are made to order. All the starters that my table ordered were great! They each came with their own unique aioli sauce. My husband and I had a date at their San Francisco location years ago and I remember enjoying it. So I had to book a reservation for their Palo Alto location. It's much closer to home too! I booked it for 12:30pm on a Saturday for outdoor seating. I saw that they offer Happy Hour Monday-Friday from 2pm-5pm. Delarosa Palo Alto is located at Stanford Shopping Mall so parking SUCKS on weekends. My husband had to drop me off so I could make our reservation. The hostess who led me to our outside table wasn't very friendly.. she seemed annoyed the whole encounter and didn't give us any menus. I had to eventually walk back inside to ask for them. It also took foreverrr for our server to come around to take our order. We were hangry at that point. We ordered.. CAESAR SALAD $9 -little gem lettuce, caesar dressing, croutons, parmesan cheese. Very refreshing, the lettuce was crisp and I loved the croutons. There wasn't enough caesar dressing though, so a lot of pieces were just plain lettuce. I would have loved this dish if there was more dressing! Maybe some freshly cracked pepper too. 3.5/5* CRAB ARANCINI (4) $13 -served with calabrese aioli. The arancini was a bit dense and heavy but I enjoyed the real crab. The fried coating was crunchy but also thick. Kinda plain overall but the aioli helped. It had a nice spicy kick. 3.5/5* FRITTO MISTO $15 -fried calamari, shishito peppers, served with herb aioli. I really enjoyed the crispy light batter. Aioli didn't have much flavor though. 4/5* RIGATONCINI $20 -vodka sauce, pancetta. Vodka sauce was good but light, pancetta was tasty and the pasta was al dente. Wished the dish came out hotter, it was just warm. 3.5/5* MARGHERITA PIZZA $18 -marinara sauce, mozzarella, basil. Good marinara. Nice chewy crust with a char. It held up well. Simple. 4/5* The food came out pretty quickly but we got the pasta by itself first. Followed by the fried appetizers and then the salad. Which I thought was weird.. but whatever, we were so hungry. When we were done, we couldn't find our server anywhere. After almost 10 minutes of waiting, I got up to look for him and he peeked his head out of the restaurant door, just as I was about to walk over. Nowadays I am looking for family friendly establishments that do provide toddler friendly amenities without losing the feeling of having an adult meal. I think Delarosa - ESPECIALLY this location was great. There is a kids menu with basically the same items as the adult menu but with less frills, smaller portions and kid friendly pallet options. Crayons are provided for the various activities on the backside of the kid menu. I highly recommend making a reservation if you prefer indoor seating. We made a reservation on OpenTable. With young ones we have to eat early but we always make reservations regardless because there is zero flexibility with toddler hanger. We walked in and our table was already set up with our two requested high chairs. As a mom to two young toddler twins - this gave them 5 stars in my book. The tables seemed to get moved around to accommodate larger parties, but definitely easier to get a walk-in table with a group of 2-4 or come off peak times. They do also take reservations. The food is very tasty, this time we tried the appetizers and pasta, although their pizza is solid as well. The rigatoni had a better, heartier taste, while the pappardelle had more actual meat. The tomato sauce tasted authentic with that classic tomato tartness you expect from a well-made Italian sauce. The portion size was just right--very filling and perfect for one person. The staff seemed very young and unaware, and the wait times were too long. The prawns were small, still had shells, and tasted frozen. The pizza was undercooked and could have used more time in the oven. The red sauce was very basic. The Caesar salad was the best part, but even that tasted generic. The house beers were also disappointing and tasted like canned grocery store beer. We had a really nice lunch at Delarosa. We arrived without a reservation on a Saturday, and we were seated right away. Some of the tables require you squeeze through to sit, and I recommend you use the restroom before your meal or you might booty bump your neighbor or a dish! This is the case at a few other Italian restaurants that I have visited. Apps: The beet salad was refreshing with two types of beets, goat cheese, candied almonds, kale, farro, avocado (double duty on the big hitters), and a subtle (but good) dressing. We didn't order the pizza, however I presume the onion bread is the same dough as the pizza? Just a suspicion. If that's the case the pizza is probably a bit too crunchy for my taste. We overheard the table next to us commenting on picking another good pizza place so they enjoyed it. I enjoyed the bread and the grilled/baked onions on top, but I liked the other two items more. Pasta: The vegetable lasagna was really rich and had a number of different vegetables. Zucchini, squash, carrots, red pepper (might have forgotten something) that were diced up. You can also tell when the ingredients are high quality. And the cheese pull was out of control. If you are in it for the gram, video the epic cheese pull. YUM! If you came here back in the day, you might remember it was CPK! Throwback. They have really upscaled the decor, and it has a clean aesthetic. Our server was a character. The hanger steak was tender and well seasoned, and the caramelized onions were great. The pizza was good. It was a bit salty before I mixed the cheese, but once mixed, everything blended together well. The dough was crispy yet chewy, thin in the middle with a thicker crust around the edges. I ended up adding some of the onions to my pizza as well, which really elevated the flavors. Delarosa is a perfect casual but trendy dining spot, appropriate at any time of day- between shopping, after shopping, or just for dinner. Great ambiance, design, finishes, staff, and food! We can't wait to come back in a few weeks and try it again. We got 3 food items: Spicy rigatoncini: perfect texture, could use way more spice (we tasted no spice at all), great portion size. I walked by this spot on a weekday during happy hour 3-5PM. I noticed the sign and was drawn closer by the playlist, 90's hip hop on this day and where else in Palo Alto can we find radio bangers from back in the day? Here, iykyk. I'd gather friends here and will be back. Staff were also very friendly & personable. Full bar & open kitchen. Functional restaurant design and great for groups.
