Came by for dinner the other night and it was a mediocre experience. Camper took over the former LB Steak venue numerous years ago and is featured in the Michelin guiide. Parking is plentiful on surface streets and surface lots surrounding the restaurant. Dining is available both indoors or on the patio outdoors. Service by the uniformed waiter was fine throughout the evening. Started off with the cornbread and it was ok. The cornbread seems to have been baked and kept in the warmer as it was starting to dry out. The dry aged NY steak was requested medium rare and turned out more like a medium well after sitting on the table for a bit... The NY Steak had a robust meaty flavor. The side of potatoes and char were great. The campanelle pasta was tasty although the pasta may have been a touch over-cooked as the pasta was no longer al dente. There were plenty of mushrooms. The mushroom side dish was rich and rather heavy. Camper is an incredible spot to grab a bite. The food that they serve is both comforting and exciting. Unique flavor combinations, but prepared in a way that feels like a family's home cooked meal. I came here to celebrate a special occasion with work colleagues, so I got to try a lot of different food, and I have to say, almost everything was fantastic. Really enjoyed my recent work dinner here at this restaurant that has American/Californian cuisine. The ambiance was cute and cozy and the service was fast. I had to adjust the party size and timing and there were very accommodating. We started with the olives, cornbread and brussel sprouts with the crispy Brussels being the highlight as they were seasoned very well. For my main dish- I had the pork ragu pasta which I enjoyed. My friend booked a table through OpenTable to celebrate a friend's birthday with brunch/lunch at 12PM on a Saturday. Upon arrival, the restaurant wasn't too busy -- about 40% capacity. We waited about a minute as the host had stepped away before we were seated. The staff were welcoming, friendly, and attentive! My friend and I ordered quite a few plates to share and try out their menu. We definitely had leftovers. APP * Warm Sourdough (3) with Cultured Butter + Housemade Jam The appetizer was okay. I appreciate the butter and jam; however, the sourdough toast was pretty hard and difficult to chew. Perhaps not as fresh a loaf? Unfortunately, it left the fried chicken less crispy and enjoyable. The fried chicken was bland, but being from Georgia makes it hard to meet my expectations for good fried chicken. I think reducing the amount of slaw within the sandwich will do the trick. The saffron aioli sounds good, but I don't taste any saffron. It's a delicate ingredient and can be overpowering, but in this case, it was absent. Lastly, the Shakshuka Verde was beautifully plated, and the flavors were enjoyable. However, my opinion may be influenced by my dislike of artichoke. My friend wanted to order this dish but was disappointed. The sauce was very loose and watery, and it should have been a bit thicker for easier bread dipping. The poached eggs broke as soon as they arrived on the plate. With some fine-tuning, I believe it could be a fantastic dish--plus, it definitely needs more feta! Not sure that I would come back to order a single meal, but It was nice to try several different dishes at once and great for a large group where everyone was willing to share. My favorite dish was the agnolotti pasta by far, though the chicken was substantial and a hearty meal to share among two or more people. The menu itself is super eclectic, Californian American with Italian and Asian influences (for example one dish came with bok choy). I was not a fan of the halibut and it tasted surprisingly fishy but that may have been because of how it was seasoned. We also got the apple crisp and milk jar pudding for dessert - I preferred the crisp. We had excellent service for a large party of 6 or 7 people. Camper has an automatic 20% gratuity added onto your bill. Now our server was kind enough to let us know when the bill came out, but tips should be based on service and not based on whether or not you just decide to just dine somewhere. Management if you are reading this, either pay your workers a fair and livable wage or find other ways to make up for this 20% elsewhere on your menu. Now lets talk about why this is a further issue. It may had been an off night, they may had been understaffed--who knows. What we did know was our server only came twice to check in on us, once at the beginning when we ordered and at the end when we paid the bill. Strangely she also told the busser to remove our plates right when our sourdough came out. The bussers came back and apologized for the miscommunication and eventually brought the plates back but this un smooth service was why 20% is a steep price to pay just to dine here on top of the cost of the food. Speaking of food let's talk about portions for the price. I personally ordered the Crab Spaghetti and my girlfriend ordered the Corn Agnolotti. The saving grace for this review however is the food was actually delicious. Flavors were all there and unique enough that we may consider coming back if we were in the area. But man for $36-37 an entree we definitely would have to realllly reconsider it because I didn't even get a full crab leg worth of meat in my spaghetti. It was literally probably shreds to a single joint on a crab leg. For that price we literally finished our meal in six bites. I could definitely had used more food and left feeling unsatisfied because of it. We definitely would've paid for another entree but with how the night went on with our first impression, we definitely had to say no. So overall, be prepared for an expensive meal if you choose to dine here, but would Camper be on my list of future visits or recommendations? Probably not. read more

This was our second time here. My overall feeling is that the food is ok to good, but the prices are way out of line for the quality. I get it - it's Menlo Park and you can charge a lot here but it seems like they are trying to punch a little above their weight class. For example, we had the chicken entree ($48). For a $48 dollar chicken breast, you need to serve something outstanding. But alas it was overly dry like many chicken breasts tend to be. The two of us spent about $200 for two apps, two entrees, one side, and 3 non-alcoholic drinks. It would have been fine if the food was a little better. The highlight of the meal for me was the Agnolotti but even that was just a bit bland and a small serving size. The interior looked modern. Cast-Iron Buttermilk Cornbread (4.5/5): The cornbread was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. It came with a green chile-honey butter which was so creamy. I thought it would come out in a cast iron though. Grilled Local Squid Salad (4/5): The grilled squid was so good! Nice and tender. The salad also had cashews, calabrian chili, avocado, celery, mustard greens. There was a nice kick of spice. Creamy Dungeness Crab Spaghetti (3/5): The spaghetti was good but the dish overall was salty. It had lemon, tarragon, chervil, and parsley. The portion of Dungeness crab was good. Marinated Creekstone Flat Iron Steak (5/5): The steak and potatoes were SO GOOD. It was a good medium rare and so tender. The potatoes were crispy, hearty and full of flavor. The radicchio added a nice earthy touch. The black garlic sauce was light. The portion was pretty good! I would order this dish again. I enjoyed my time here. I got a strawberry Pimm's cocktail and that was good too. A bit pricey though. The staff were super nice and also helped us cut a cake we brought in. It's fluffy, flavorful and with the butter on top, *chefs kiss.* We also enjoyed the squid salad which was a nice healthy, refreshing item to enjoy with the rigatoni pork ragu and Dungeness crab spaghetti. Situated in downtown Menlo Park, when you walk in the reception is right by the door but the amount of space is impressive as there are plenty of seating at the bar and a mix of high tops and booths. We were warmly greeted and seated in the back room by the water and plate station which was a little disruptive as the servers were arguing at times right next to us. The service was a little delayed but we did enjoy our choices: Cornbread - Warm, moist and very savory with the addition of a generous portion of garlic butter. Halibut- Tender, well seasoned crusted portion and accompanied with cauliflower & pine nuts was nice pairing. Could not identify any golden raisins as advertised. Grilled Prawns- generous number of prawns with head and tail included which I enjoy since they were prepared to a tender style that the whole prawn could be consumed. The cioppino emulsion was subtle and could have used more but otherwise a good dish. However, the tree branches in front of the property obscure the restaurant's name from plain sight--a minor inconvenience for an otherwise fantastic experience. Camper has completely reimagined the classics--and every bite is a reminder of how exciting and fresh brunch should be. The Smoked Trout Salad was a surprise standout. One bite in, and I felt compelled to take another bite, and another bite... It is a creative play on potato salad with layers of new textures and flavors--bright, savory, and addictive! The Breakfast Steam Buns were another clever twist--fluffy bao filled with savory sausage and egg, with pickled cucumber and mint cutting through beautifully. Balanced, bold, memorable and delicious! The Buttermilk Pancake Double-Stack was cloud-like yet chewy at the same time. Paired with chamomile honey butter, it added just enough floral sweetness. The Shakshuka Verde was fresh and herbaceous, with the tomatillo and green garlic bringing brightness to the warm, comforting base. This is a cold day comfort meal order. And then--the Roasted Apple-Cinnamon Roll. Imagine apple pie and a cinnamon roll had a perfect child. One bite and I was completely blown away. Every dish felt thoughtful and new. My wife and I had dinner at Camper tonight and absolutely loved it. The place just has that great Menlo Park energy, stylish but relaxed, with a warm, welcoming vibe that makes you want to linger a little longer. The food was spot on, beautifully balanced flavors, creative without being over the top, and everything tasted incredibly fresh. You can tell the kitchen takes real pride in what they do. What really made the night stand out was the people. The owner came by our table and was genuinely delightful, engaging, gracious, and clearly proud of the restaurant. And to top it off, we were thrilled to see Carlos, one of our favorite local waiters, now part of the Camper team. He's the kind of person who just makes dining out more enjoyable. BRUNCH REVIEW: I came here for brunch on a Saturday with a couple of girlfriends. First impression is upscale but rustic and not fussy. The staff was attentive and friendly. Their brunch menu is small, which I appreciated, and it had a little of all your favorite brunchy items. Overall the food was very good, and they didn't shoo us away when we continued chatting way passed their brunch service. What we ordered: + Logan's orange + currant scones - buttery, scrupulous, with a hint of orange. So good. + Spanish chopped salad - chopped lettuces mixed with cheese and olives with chunks of pesto chicken made for a very refreshing bite. Dressing was fresh and light. + Famous camper fried chicken - finger lickin' good. These are more like chicken nuggets. They were seasoned well, crunchy outside, with moist, tender chicken inside. It kinda reminded me of chicken karaage. The dill ranch dressing was the perfect compliment. + Build your own Avo toast - I'm a sucker for avocado toast, but this was a bit of a disappointment. It's deconstructed, which I don't mind, but the sourdough toast was overly toasted, hard, and dry. Also, it's supposed to be a sliced into thirds, but somehow we got 3 very uneven edge pieces of toast (see pic). It looked nothing like the scrupulous pic I saw on Yelp with ribbons with fresh radish and microgreens. Ours came with pickled veggies. However, the avocado/pistachio mash was delicious, as was the red pepper sauce. Overall, we had a wonderful experience at Camper and look forward to coming again for dinner. read more
