It's a gyro shop with coffee. Small place to sit and eat but the food is great for a grab and go. You can get a full meal for under $10. The coffee and chai tea is nice. Better than Starbucks but the prices have gone up. The gyros are good whatever the style. Just buy the gyros and go. The specials are nice but the gyros are filling. The falafel is just ok. I frequently find myself at the bus stop near this cafe, and recently found myself thirsty and with some time to handle that "issue" before my bus arrived. Their Italian Soda wasn't super-fantastic, but it was tasty and fulfilled my craving for one. The owner was very cheerful and funny. Great person to exchange several words with and have a few laughs! 2.5 stars I ordered the shawarma and it was not at all like the shawarma I've had at other places (here it is advertised as Arabic shawarma). Essentially it was exactly like a gyro except wrapped in a shawarma casing. In addition, a fair portion of the meat was dry and over-cooked-- it was sort of like eating crispy bacon. Small cafe with 3 tables and small window bar. Serving sandwiches panini style... and I mean all sandwiches. I ordered a gyro and was horrified to see a perfectly soft and pliable pita mashed (not once, not twice, but three times) into a panini press in an attempt to warm it? turn it into a mushy tortilla? obliterate the texture? I'm sure I'm not the only unhappy customer (see below two-star reviews as well) - so you should probably look out for the review from the person you are mistaking me for so that you can show the Yelp world, once again, that you probably shouldn't be in the restaurant business because you can't take criticism. I'm sure no one will be surprised, at this point, that you told another one of your customers to "fuck off" after they spent money on your poor excuse for Mediterranean cuisine. Deli Shez is a nifty little Belltown find off the main beaten track of First & Second Avenues. It has a lot to recommend it: THE GOODIES: Deli Shez has a very nice selection of Middle Eastern standards (gyros, falafel, hummus, etc.). They are flavorful and freshly prepared. The lamb gyros are cut to order from a genuine vertical gyro spit (to Yelper Kristen B. I respectfully submit that this IS genuine gyro meat; there are different styles. You may be familiar with the technique of stacking lots of slices of lamb on top of each other, and then putting them on the skewer. This is the style of very finely grinding lamb to a pate-like consistency and mixing with herbs and spices, then forming on a the grill spit and grilling. This IS the real deal, and it was very good). If you want your gyro to go, you'll appreciate their 'why-didn't-I-think-of-that' approach of wrapping it up like a Taco del Mar Mondo Burrito. This way, you can peel the foil and eat it without dripping the sauce all over yourself, like Elaine in that famous episode of "Seinfeld". Service is outstanding. I don't know if the staffer who served me is the owner or not (she said she does make the hummus and falafel), but she was like bottled sunshine, and really made you feel welcome and your business was appreciated, which goes a LONNNNG way in this biz. ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT: DS has a modest collection of drinks, and it would be nice to see a wider variety of offerings in the beer and wine department (especially Retsina, which is a natural compliment to Middle Eastern cuisine). The hummus, while nice, was a tad underseasoned. A bit more garlic, paprika, and a smidgen of cayenne will go a long way here. THE VERDICT: A competent little cafe which helps address the rather underserved market for Middle Eastern cuisine, Deli Shez offers solid performance, and it's few shortcomings are more than compensated by warm, gracious service. It's unfortunate because the gyros and falafel salad here are quite good, using real crumbled feta and a garlicky tatziki sauce. But I just can't let the horrible service and uncleanliness of the place slide. I hate to give a bad service review when you visit a restaurant and they're understaffed, but if you have one person working your register and making dishes during lunch hours while the phone and delivery notifications ring endlessly while a line of customers wait, then that's pretty unacceptable. I was starving and looking for a place to eat and work for a bit. I had the lamb gyro plate and it was exactly what I needed plus it tasted awesome. The plate was heaped with lots of tasty tender lamb meat, a salad, seasoned rice, a little hummus and babaganouj, and a large piece of pita bread. Plus the pita bread was thin and double sided like it is supposed to be and not the fluffy spongey stuff you get at some spots around town. Well worth the $9. read more

I actually ordered food to go from this place for dinner one night while visiting Seattle. I tried the falafel salad with pita bread and hummus. I agree with some Yelpers that the falafel was somewhat dry, but the delicious dressings that came with the salad softened it up and added a punch of spicy flavor. So, I was a fan of the salad. Interestingly enough, the pita was given to me in the manufacturer bag. It was like they just purchased it from the store and gave me the last thin, round pita in the bag to take with. I ordered the meat-and-veggie plate with gyro meat and dolma for the veggie. It came with hummus, a small salad, rice, pita, and tzaziki. * Hummus: Tasty, good texture, plenty of garlic. Too salty, but I like had just gone for 5 mile lunch-run and was craving salt so I was happy about that. I might come back here just for hummus. * Pita: It was fine, a little on the dry side and kind of plain but ok. * Salad: Way too little salad, should have swapped out half the rice to double the salad size. Otherwise it was fine, if boring. * Dolmas: Edible. Very slimy in texture, but flavor was acceptable. * Rice: Too wet, and WAY too much rice. At least it wasn't burnt! * Gyro: Super dry and chewy. I really like this little place. It's not fancy, but the food is very good and reasonably priced. I have really enjoyed the falafel sandwich and it wasn't dry at all. I've also had the gyro platter, which was a generous-sized portion. I find the baba ganouj to be fantastic, but tastes vary. They have free Wi-Fi and you can pay with Level Up! The staff here is super nice. They greet you at the door, and they just are all-around friendly, which is rare these days. Considering they were so nice, I almost feel bad saying the food is meh. I had the lamb gyro, and it was just okay. I've had worse, but I've also had better. The flavor just wasn't cutting it, and the texture was really really soft. I've tried most of the items on their menu and have to say that out of all the gyros I've had, this place makes them both delicious and reasonably priced. Their baklava is very tasty, too!
