so in all fairness i've never actually eaten here so i probably have no credibility whatsoever, but i just wanted to make it known that this place smells quite weird and unpleasant. my other little complaint is that the light and walls are both very yellow. it's ugly. i guess the food here is probably good though because at lunch time the place was full and nobody seemed to be crying. phillips just wasn't for me. update: i decided to give phillips a chance, mostly because i wanted a smoothie and the only other place nearby was starbucks and i didn't want to be basic. guess what? it was terrible. i really did not know that smoothies could be bad, but phillips managed to show me it was possible. lesson learned: trust your instincts. read more

I work in this building and typically get breakfast here three times a week. It has decent breakfast sandwiches and platters that they make quickly. They're also open to customizing anything to what you want. I like the staff. The cash register kid is a good guy, super energetic and friendly, he's a character. For lunch they have freshly sliced turkey, roast beef, ham, etc. I rarely go here for lunch and would probably consider Lawsons' sandwiches superior, but Phillips has all fresh ingredients. read more

The line starts at the door. I was new in town and did not see menu board. I just asked for pastrami on Rye. It looked at 1st as if I would have to give half the sandwich away. It was very good, especially with strong mustard. I managed to eat the whole thing. The brownie was large and not disappointing. It is a good place for a quick drop in. I've never gotten something here I didn't love. I love every soup I've had, every sandwich, every bag of chips, and piece of bread pudding. I've only had turkey sandwiches, but it's the best turkey I've ever had on a sandwich. Every other turkey sandwich is a disappointment after you've had one of these. The soups have the ability to improve my day. The only thing risky about this place is there's a spazzy dude who works at the register. He's kinda all over the place and I'm convinced he does it for his own entertainment. All of the meats are freshly roasted and shaved as you order, so they're juicy and hot. I'm partial to the turkey, but you can't go wrong with the ham or roast beef. Besides for fresh meat, the bread is never stale and the veggies are succulent. Here's the ingedients for a heavenly sandwich- turkey, rye bread, light mayo, avocado, muenster cheese, lettuce, tomato, sprouts and onion. Can't be beat! Amazing!!!! I am personally a fan of their Cuban Pork Special. I absolutely adore their concept of carving the meats right out of the oven in front of you. The line is can be intimidating but it's worth braving it because they are so fast you won't realize you were even in a line. And as Yonas H. said. The freaking cashier is amazing. This place is understated on the outside but has some of the best deli sandwiches I've had on the east coast. The meats are all fresh and hand-carved: this is not your typical cold-cut! I doubt there are any nitrates in the meat. The lettuce and tomato are so fresh- simple things. There are no corners cut here. Apparently this is a local chain of three or four delis. They have some of the best sandwiches around. Turkey, ham and (rare) roast beef are carved right in front of you and piled onto your choice of bread. They also have cheesesteaks, which start with an actual piece of steak (no frozen beef strips here) and then grilled and chopped up for your sandwich. The soups are also excellent. Salads are ok - the grilled chicken that goes on the salads is rather dry. You can go elsewhere for a better salad. Good assortment of chips, sodas, etc. And now they have fresh baked cookies and brownies. The managers/owners are also very friendly and know the regulars. It's a bit more expensive than your run of the mill downtown deli, but the food is of significantly better quality. Highly recommended. Note: even though it's located in a building with a Mass. The turkey was freshly roasted, made and carved to order. To counter the effects of a turkey nap, I drank an iced coffee. The coffee was fantastic! This place kicks ass. Period. They have some fantastic sandwiches. They oven-roast ALL of their meat fresh every day and carve it right in front of you when you're ready to order something. I work south of Verizon Center, but it's definitely worth the trek all the way up there to grab a bite to eat. My FAVORITE part about this place is the over-enthusiastic cashier!! This place is good. I've been every morning and you can constantly see the doors swinging in and out with customers on the go. The service is lightening fast and the breakfast sandwiches are delish. Also, super happy that they have Mighty Leaf teas. They also have a very basic oatmeal selection with raisins and brown sugar and cinnamon toppings. Warning: Be VERY clear with your instructions. This is one of my Washington, DC staples, probably cause it's so close to my work but there's a reason people keep lining up for sandwiches at breakfast and lunch. The breakfast sandwiches are divine; there's a guy who I call the Eggman, who melts cheese into layers of egg before stuffing it in an english muffin for me. It's a treat for me when the Eggman is working the grill. At lunch Phillips serves a variety of sandwiches with freshly carved and generous portions of meat. Those are reliable, though my favorite is the chicken salad. And when you head to the cash register to pay, you'll likely find the enthusiastic Young David, who's one of the fastest in town at ringing you up. You want it, they got it. Breakfast is scrumptious. The breakfast sandwiches are delicious! I always get the turkey bacon egg white and cheese on an english muffin. I love that my sandwich doesn't get soggy by the time I walk my way back to work. (A breakfast sandwich problem I encounter often.) I almost forgot to add, THE ICED COFFEE COMES WITH COFFEE ICE CUBES! GENIUS! Lunch is always amazing. Whether you get a sandwich or a salad, they always use the freshest ingredients and definitely take pride in service. The fresh carved meat is so tender and flavorful. They have a huge selection of delicious vegetables that they generously pile onto your sandwich. They also have egg / tuna / chicken salad as well. I've tried all of them, and they are all equally as delicious as the carved meats. (All of my coworkers are addicted now!) Their salads are amazing as well. My favorite is the house salad (I think that's what it's called.) It has blueberries, strawberries, blue cheese, bacon, turkey, +whatever other vegetables you want to add. While the owners are always polite at the register or when you're getting soup, the rest of the deli leaves much to be desired. A couple weeks ago, I got their featured salad and promptly had food poisoning that evening (having eaten nothing else that day). Today I tried to get a grilled cheese with a slice of ham and was served melted cheese on a pile of ham shavings in cold bread. If you don't serve what I requested, please say so (although I did see that they were able to heat bread for another customer)! It did not help that the sandwich did not taste good. I was giving Deli Zique the benefit of the doubt because their overpriced egg salad at least tasted good, but now I know that I am not returning any time soon. read more

As I read in a review below, this is the place you get your lunch to take back with you to eat at your desk. Captive audience because in chinatown you wait in line at any fast food rest after 1130 am. They have 10 or 12 very small tables that get in the way of the lines of people ordering or waiting for food. It is quick. And the food is decent but overpriced, especially on the breakfast menu. I got there before 0730 am, ordered 3 scrambled eggs with cheese, no bread no nothing; $5.95 kind of steep which means I will be going back to my old place where people are nicer and the cost is half. Oh, and I had to wait over ten minutes and at least 6 people who came in behind (with eggs on a sandwich of some sort) were served before I, and they forgot the cheese. I didn't realize till I got to my desk. The people taking the orders seem rude but it might be more due to a language barrier- they seem to speak mostly Spanish there (draw your own conclusions) . If there is a DHS office in DC, you'll no doubt see a "Phillips" brand cafe within walking distance, which also says they have a bit of a monopoly. Thanks, but no thanks. And also, Chinatown is going downhill fast, so unless this is a block or less, go somewhere else, like Vie De France at L'enfant. They are much cleaner and seem more customer oriented. I forgot to say- it is very smelly in there. Your clothes reek if you are there more than 5 minutes. But I won't be going back so I don't care. read more

The food is consistently good, service is quick, and the place is clean and efficient. Usually my food is ready by the time I pay. Some of the reviews here are, in my opinion, unfair. This is a deli - it has some choices as far as bread and cheese, etc., but it isn't fancy.
