Bakery review: More disappointing every time. Several years ago, we had a red velvet cake from Der Dutchman and it was the most amazing red velvet cake we'd ever had. Then two years ago we ordered another one, and it wasn't nearly as good anymore. The frosting was both too cheesy and too sweet at the same time. Now, we thought we'd give them one more try. I ordered a strawberry cream birthday cake with rainbow sprinkles. When we went to pick it up, the birthday boy's name was misspelled, and there were no sprinkles at all. They threw a few on top at that point, but it's clearly a halfhearted attempt. Finally, the exterior was supposed to be covered in vanilla buttercream. It was not, instead it was plain frosting. The interior had whipped cream as advertised, but I wish they had been much more generous with it. There were just way too many misses on this birthday cake. We won't be coming to this bakery anymore. read more

When you do your Der Dutchman with my family we usually try to make it out when in Sarasota. Two of us got the lunch buffet, which was well worth its money it's delicious Southern comfort food that taste delicious. Everything is made from scratch and I feel like everything I tasted was perfectly seasoned. The chicken was perfectly cooked and juicy. The roasted turkey was delicious and its own juice. Besides, were really good they had mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, and green beans and the salad bar had a beet boiled egg that I've never had before but it was good. I stopped by the bakery before leaving to get my kids and fam some thing getting some candy treats a couple cupcakes everything was great. read more

Crisp greens, clean toppings, the joys of the long forgotten salad bar themes of the 2000s. For dinner comes the fresh helpings of wholesome and hardy fixings. The patrons, always pleasant, eagerly await the thick and hardy meats. Broasted chicken, heavy meat loaf and pulled pork all on the same plate? For $21? Something feels off. Why is this such a bargain? Did Der Dutchman crack the code? Too many questions, not enough meat loaf. Am I getting full? Hah. Never. An after main course salad? Why not? And I'm still writing questions? Enough. More salad. And now dessert. I'll take the Banana pudding and apple crusted pie. Feeling adventurous, I spread them over a cinnamon roll base. This meal was like a big warm hug from grandma in the country. Comfort food at its best!! Broasted chicken - did not disappoint as was recommended by many. Moist juicy dark meat pieces with a fantastic crispy exterior. 5 stars! Mac and cheese - thinner cheese sauce but tasted fresh and homemade. 4.5 stars. Creamed corn - we always made Gullivers recipe as a kid so this was a little more like the one from the can. Still worth having on the plate. 4 stars. Cheesy mashed potatoes - soooooooooo good. You need this - perfect texture and flavor. 5 stars. Beef noodles - this was a first for me and I enjoyed the combination of beef and noodles as a dry dish. I kinda felt like it wanted it to be a beef ragu. 4 stars. Beef vegetable soup - strong beefy flavor with lots of beef chunks and frozen type vegetables. Felt like it was a little lacking. 3.5 stars. Chicken noodle soup - standard diner style chicken noodle with wide flat noodles and white meat. Just ok. 3.5 stars. Salad bar - all the veg tasted super fresh! I was surprised some of the usual suspects like corn and olives were missing, but it was very extensive especially considering the potato salad, broccoli salad, seafood salad, pasta salad, etc...great choices. And my kiddo got a kick out of the whole pickled beets. Yum. 5 stars. Desserts - the donuts are definitely the thing to get - just in general - so it was awesome to try them at the buffet. I expected more from the cakes since their bakery items looked pretty phenomenal. Don't forget to ask for free soft serve at the end too! Overall 4 stars. I should had tried more items but I always hate wasting food. Next time! And we realized afterwards that we should had gone for the $8.99/lb option in to-go containers since we really weren't hungry enough to do the $17.99/pp ayce. This restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can have their buffet or order off menu. I have only ever been here for their lunch buffet. I specifically go for the "Broasted Chicken " which is delicious. All the food in this family friendly restaurant is prepared from scratch. There is lots of comfort food on this buffet as well as a large salad bar. This restaurant also has a huge bakery with delicious pies as well as lots of other sweets. I highly recommend their pies. Plus this one has a buffet option that my party was interested in. The buffet is $17.99 and all you can eat. Comes with ice cream also which is offered to you at the end by the waitress/waiter. The place is quite busy. And it's huge! They have the dining area, a bakery area and an upstairs area where you can look for gift type items. Waitress was quick and friendly. Very attentive. The buffet looked interesting but I'm not a buffet fan so I opted to just order the meatloaf with green beans and a side salad. My food was out QUICK. The meatloaf was DRY! And had no real good flavor. Sort of bland to be honest. Hubs had to get me gravy from the buffet to drown my dry meatloaf so I could eat it. They serve you dinner rolls which were really good. Food is great, but i was very disappointed in the service they offered. I got told before cinnamon bund are on the breakfast menu. We arrived at 10 am, none on the buffet, i ask prior to going to the buffet if there any and got told yes. When i ask if they made more they told be i could buy them from the front. Started out with large dinner rolls slathered with their peanut butter spread. This stuff is peanut butter crack. A flip flop would taste good with this spread on it. I ordered the seafood platter which included a nice piece of cod and 5 butterflied shrimp all fried to perfection. My sides were mac and cheese and applesauce, and hush puppies. My wife's turkey dinner had a very large portion of turkey and she loved it. When we left we went to their bakery area and picked up some of the peanut butter spread to take home. While attending a convention early this past week, we were suggested to check out Der Dutchman in Sarasota, conveniently located next to our hotel. The place is beautiful, with all the bakery goodies including cinnamon rolls, plus a charming gift shop upstairs. For dinner, everyone recommended the broasted chicken, but I was in the mood for more since I had a bigfoot sized appetite! The buffet was offered at a reasonable price, and I was impressed by the large selection of food. The salad bar even had chilled plates, which felt quite fancy. I went back for seconds on the chicken. It was broasted to perfection with a crispy crust and juicy meat inside. All the food tasted "real" and homemade, not processed at all. The stuffing (or dressing) was loaded with pieces of bread and meat, which was filling, though a bit unusual for my taste. Each table had a peanut butter spread that apparently is used for everything in this Amish community (I may be wrong, but thats what I was told), but I couldn't find a use for it. Our waitress was incredibly polite and accommodating. Towards the end of our meal, she reminded us about the soft serve ice cream machine and offered to bring us a bowl, which we gladly accepted. They also have a nice dessert bar, but we stuck with the soft serve. This was my first time at Der Dutchman and I enjoyed it. I tried the buffet and everything was good. My favorite was the broasted chicken. I also enjoyed the white and wheat Amish dinner rolls. Again, everything was good, definitely two notches above Golden Corral or other types of buffets, but several items were a little bland. If I had to choose between Der Dutchman and Yoder's my vote would be for Yoder's. read more

I have been to the sister location in Middlebury Indiana, and expected a similar experience. It was not. When the salad bar is the best thing you have, there's a problem. Our first time here so I ordered the roasted chicken because it's their specialty. The chicken ( I ordered all dark meat) was so dry and flavorless. I could get past the lack of salt but not the dryness especially when thighs are always juicy. The potatoes were dehydrated boxed and the gravy tasted very artificial and loaded with salt. The only good thing was the over cooked green beans. The rolls were very good but I can go to lots of places. The food is very over priced for the quality. I'll stick to the mom and pops for quality food. When I barely ate anything and told her why ( she didn't come to the table until we were almost done) she said she took $10.00 off my check. I visited Der Dutchman around 3:30pm too late for lunch and too early for dinner. While the place was not at all busy? The food that was laid out would have feed an army. Not only was there a huge variety of options, the food was fresh and delicious. I don't know how they made the salmon so perfect and tender or why they had mashed potatoes literally covered in cheese seemingly just for me but they did! My only regret is not being able to eat more! The staff was extremely polite and gracious and the space was an event itself! I'm trying to find time in my schedule to go back tomorrow.
