I have been traveling for lunch off late and today ended up at Desi Bethak. It about 20 mins away from my work place so I decided to call ahead and asked for to go. To my surprise when I was ordering Baba Tahir referred to me with my first name. . It was a pleasant surprise that a famous chef of the area would know you by your first name (thank you DMV Halal Reviews for making us famous). I asked for Chicken Biryani and Beef Bihari boti. Was excited to try taste of karachi flavor as it was my first visit. As soon as I reached Tahir bhai greeted me with his patent smile which was so genuine and warm that I felt at home right away. We chatted a little and he rememebed me from my here and when I visited him at Desi Kitchen in Woodbridge. My order was ready all packed. Bec I didn't mention if I wanted a naan or paratha on the call, Tahir bhai added both for me without charging me anything extra (customer service #1) While we were talking for a little bit he mentioned bun Kabab n I was like oops I forgot to order bun kabab. Tahir bhai took care of it immediately. As soon as I sat in my car I opened the box for Bun Kabab. The first bite And I was in alleys of karachi. I loved it so much that I called Tahir bhai from my car to tell him it is one of the best bun Kabab's I've had here. For some of you who are old here know my love for Toosso and their food. This bun Kabab as good as one at Toosso or may be slightly better. The side also was a bit bigger. I chomped the whole thing in no time. For biryani and Bihari I had to wait till I reached work. The biryani was amazing n reminded me of daig biryani you would get in karachi. Just one thing I noticed that though the biryani had perfect masala, though it seemed that chicken was cooked separately. So if u had chicken just by itself (why would one do that (?) but I like to taste it separately. It's just me), it didn't have masala (spice) in it. It was delicious regardless. I shared some with my indian colleagues at work and they loved it too. Beef Bihari Boti was well marinated (deep marination) and was soft n juicy. The Bihari flavor was evident in every bite and it was great. I had it with paratha n it just completed the experience. It's close to Costco, and although most of the reviews I read were quite negative about this place... I had a good first experience. I ordered the Zinger burger combo (came with fries and a drink). The fries were were well-seasoned and not soggy, and the burger was large and crunchy. I believe this restaurant is best for fresh, sit-in dining, because over delivery I feel like the buns and fries would get soggy. However, the inside isn't all that pleasing to the eye: it was better than I was expecting, but the wallpaper is peeling off near the tables/booth and the tables are dusty (I cleaned mine with a napkin and saw plenty on it). My mom enjoyed the shami kabob bun, it reminded her of the college canteens in pakistan haha, so it tasted authentic. The food took about 12-15 min, which is reasonable, and was nice and hot! Service is fast when it comes to taking your order at the register, but they don't check up on you to see how everything is or if you need anything once your food is out. I haven't had the curries, kabobs, or naans, today was only my first visit, but I hope next time i visit and try something else, it's just as good! read more

They have the best biryani is the whole area - not to say it's the best biryani I've had, because I've had better, but this is the best I've had at any restaurant. I'm also a huge fan of their beef Bihari boti, which comes with sliced onions and a tangy sauce. They also have rabri on the menu which got me really excited, but it was not that great. My husband who has never had rabri enjoyed it though. read more

This is as authentic pakistani food as you can get. The daaga kabob and biryanis are our favorites. Bihari kabob was very good too, hope they go back to thinner slices and away from the typical cubes. Also, the chutney is truly homemade. They also upped the ante with outdoor seating and the nice lighting. The basement area is good too. Given the price point, kindn ownership, ease of seating I think this is a 5 star experience. Desi Bethak was good. I had the lamb with rice and bread . Very flavorful and I enjoyed the whole entree. I recommend this place. I will have to try another plate for something different next time. I would give it a 6/10 and even that's pushing it. The bun kabob was good Steak and cheese and fries good Chicken Shorwa and chicken Karahi looked and tasted the same to me ‍ the taste had me thinking of something I could have made my self at home, and the portion size was ridiculously small! (Side note; why don't they have actual plastic wear ? Seemed like they just picked up plates from Dollar tree) Karachi briyani spicy but wasn't a fan of the flavor (I am starting to believe I should stop eating briyani outside of the house because there isn't a single place in the dmv that can make it correct :( ) Naan 0/10 I had to ask the guy to make sure the next one was cooked correctly because the sides were all uncooked dough. Pretty sure if I had tried anything else I would have gotten food poisoning ‍ I really wanted to give this place a really good review because I thought I would finally stop having to drive to Rockville or sterling to eat at Toosso, but I guess that's not happening.... Probably the worst experience I had in a while while visiting them. There was chaos and panic everywhere. No seating order or customer service. I have not been to this place yet but called to ask if they had vegetable biryani. The guy who picked up said exactly this in a very flat tone, "we don't have vegetable biryani ok thank you bye," and hung up immediately. He did not offer me any other options, didn't ask me how I was, and seemed like he was rushing off the phone. We ordered three dishes. All were tasty and good. I will say the portions were okay but lacked chicken in two of the three dishes. My co-worker mentioned the same thing. Came in for a weekend brunch and was pretty disappointed. Aside from the fact that the brunch is ala cart so you're stuck ordering a bunch of things separately vs the usual brunch buffets that you can find at most Pakistani restaurants around, the portions of these ala carte items are tiny. The halwa puri was entirely too greasy and not flavorful and the nahari tasted like it was a few days old atleast. The restaurant is clean but definitely not somewhere I would want to go back to again. read more

Came here for the first time last week and have to say it's one of the better Pakistani restaurants. The Karachi biryani is really good. The best item on their menu is their chicken paratha roll which has to be the best roll I've ever had. Another item that they have is rabri which I've never had outside of Karachi. I was surprised no one else made this and was happy when I saw it on their menu and it's pretty good. Only item on the menu I didn't like so far is their falooda which was too watery. Definitely recommend this place to everyone looking for good Pakistani food. read more

Walking in, booths and decor to remind you of where the cuisine originated. Adorned on the walls are clear but blurry enlarged Images of famous landmarks in Karachi. An image of the famous Nishat cinema, which my father gleefully remarked he had visited as a young youth and was then a town attraction, a relic of simpler past of one of world most populous cities. A menu inspired by local street food from Karachi's infamous burns road and usual morning staples of those from the region such as chai paratha, paratha roll, halwa poori. They also feature specials that are normally prepared for consumption during momentous occasions such as weddings such as biryani featured for 5 dollars. And let me tell you it's as authentic as it gets and worth every cent. I may be biased in a way, because I am of the belief that Karachi biryani is the best form of biryani. They also feature haleem, which was traditionally cooked for hours with the help and many man-hours of neighbors and distributed between residents of the block. Foraging a sense of community. Their haleem was perhaps the closest semblance of authentic karachi haleem I've had in the states despite a relentless quest that has often led to disappointment from other establishments. After trying these staples. I decided to return and try more off the menu, trying their chicken kabob, which was perfected seasoned and marinated through, cooked on a charcoal/wood grill. It was succulent as it gets. My only hope as this establishment continues to stay consistent and they will have me as a returning patron. read more

Been here a few times now and it seems like they are working out the kinks associated with being a new restaurant. Unfortunately, it still takes some time for the food to come out so I hope that aspect continues to get better. Some of the best things that we have ordered here have been: the chicken samosas (outstanding), the zinger sandwich (very very good), the biryani (very good), and the boneless chicken kabob (outstanding). Prices are very reasonable and the service is friendly. Will continue coming back here. A great addition to the area. read more

Overrated Restaurant. A lot in food quality, presentation and value has changed since I patronize this place earlier. Last week on Friday I ordered 3 takeout dishes. They all were all overpriced and poorly presented. The 2 beef Shish (long) Kabab $13 were average in taste and came with a few cut red onion on the side and 2 small sauces. No naan or bread was included as in many other similar desi restaurants. They had me wait for over 20++ minutes to prepare it. No apologies or anything else for my long wait. I had to ask them behind the counter 3 times for it to see if it was ready. The order of Chicken Biryani was of good size but at $9 seems high because no raita (yogurt) was included with it. My third order included Mutton Kunna dish at $16 with one naan bread. No salad or rice like other similar restaurants. Hence the poor presentation. With bad service and poor food presentation this restaurant in my opinion is highly overrated and overpriced. read more

Very good experience at Desi Bethak. The owner Baba Tahir is very accomodating and the interior is very charming and had artifacts from Karachi. The menu is extensive and prices are surprisingly very reasonable. To start, their Authentic Karachi style Bun Kabob is amazing. My family loved it, with the right mix of sauces, Chutney, egg and shammi kabob, Baba Tahir has the best bun kabab in the area. Their karhai are also very good.. Also had their behari boti, which was succulent and moist with the right spicyness. Thumbs up. Thank u Mr. Tahir for bringing Karachi style cuisine to the DMV. read more

I waited over 20 min for my order which was 2 paratha rolls and what I got was less then standard. Chicken was stale and dry. This place does have a lot of good reviews but my experience was an exception from that. I don't anticipate returning and recommend this place get shut down. read more
