BEWARE. Desiree Ratner permanently disfigured my face. I don't consider myself a particularly high-maintenance patient, but this may very well be the single worst medical experience of my life. I was referred to her by new dermatologist who didn't like the look of a beauty mark on my face and wanted me to get a second opinion. She walked in the room with a team of (what I assume were) residents. She didn't introduce them or explain who they were. She took a cursory glance at my face (didn't even look at it under a magnifying glass and told me she was going to take off a "surface layer" for a biopsy. I asked her if I was better off getting the procedure done with a plastic surgeon since it was in the middle of my face, she got super defensive and said loudly "THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I DO." I asked her if it would scar and she said "No, it should heal up completely." She could see that I was still a little trepidatious, so she rolled her eyes and said "Look, do you want to do it or not?" I don't know if she was showing off for the residents or what, but she made me feel foolish for even being concerned and I felt totally bullied into signing the waiver in the chair and agreeing to let her do it. She then took less than a minute to carve the spot out of my face and waltzed out the door with her team. I had to call after her to ask if there was anything I should be doing to take care of it/avoid infection/minimize scarring and she looked back to say "Just keep it moist with some aquaphor and a band-aid". A week later, it seemed to be getting more painful and had some pus, so I called her office to see if it was something to be worried about and no one ever called me back. Another week went by andI realized that no one had called with my biopsy results either, so I called again. Two days later, someone finally called to tell me it was fine. Haven't heard from them since in terms of follow up visits/after care, etc. Now, a month and a half later, I have a jagged crater the size of a peanut on my cheek. I finally went to a plastic surgeon who was mortified that she didn't make a clean cut, stitch up the wound or offer more in-depth instruction on how to avoid scarring. Not to mention neglecting to investigate the beauty mark closely enough to realize that I didn't need to have it removed in the first place! It's too late now and I am devastated that I will have evidence of Dr. Ratner's sloppy, inconsiderate work on my face forever. Avoid going to her at all costs. read more

I went to see Dr. Ratner for Mohs surgery and the experience from beginning to end was perfect. She has an excellent and caring staff, from the front desk to her assistants. From the consult, to the surgery to the post-op, Dr. Ratner was fantastic. The procedure went perfectly and the post-op has been very easy and the healing is going extremely well. She even helped with a previous Mohs surgery I had had two years ago that did not go as well. And she has helped it enormously. I cannot say enough how wonderful she is, and her staff, and how well the surgery and the follow up has gone,. I could not be happier. She is also warm, and has terrific bedside manner. If I need any additional surgery in the future, I will definitely see Dr. Ratner again, and also recommending her and her staff to anyone I know who needs Mohs surgery. Dr. Ratner performed MOHS surgery on my upper lip. The procedure was painless and there is no scar. She also gave me advice on another unrelated skin issue that is now completely under control. This doctor is a gem. She has so much energy, is caring and professional, and is extremely knowledgeable. Her staff was equally competent and friendly. I was recently referred to Dr. Ratner for a cyst that needed to be removed. The lump had just been taking it easy, hanging out on my shoulder for about eight years, keeping me company, until one day, it decided to make itself known. The dermatologist I went to said she couldn't remove it, prescribed me five days worth of antibiotics, and told me to see Dr. Ratner a week after the pills were done so the cyst had time to "chill out." Over the next five days, it did the opposite of chill. What I witnessed over those days was almost more than my brain could process. Cut to bright and early Monday morning, when I emailed a detailed account of everything that was happening on my shoulder to Desiree, who runs the office (and is so incredibly awesome! Seriously, she will brighten your entire day!), and was brought in to Dr Ratner's office for an emergency appointment a week ahead of schedule. While I waited for Dr. Ratner, I tried to be helpful and remove the gauze pad that I had covering "the site." MISTAKE! MISTAKE! MISTAKE!!! How I wished I could have un-seen what I saw, but I couldn't. Instead, I burst into hysterical tears and stood there, hunched over, half naked, clutching a disgusting gauze pad that I didn't want to put down anywhere and contaminate anything, and crying out for someone, anyone, to come help me. Dr. Ratner entered and I swear I could hear angels singing and trumpets blaring heroically. She immediately took control of the situation, cleaned up my back, assured me she had seen much worse, dealt with "the site", and had the enormous hole in my back packed full of gauze (not so pleasant, but in the grand scheme of life, definitely not the worst thing). She was so compassionate the whole time, even though (or maybe because) I could NOT stop crying! It's been a few weeks now, and I've been back once a week to have the gauze completely removed and repacked. Every person that I have encountered in the practice has been absolutely amazing: friendly, compassionate, considerate... just everything you would WANT someone to be. I will have to schedule surgery in a few months, but knowing that Dr. Ratner will be handling it has me feeling completely confident and at ease. Honestly, I cannot recommend her enough. read more

I was referred to Dr. Ratner to do a Mohs surgery on a small cancerous spot on my upper lip. Dr. Ratner did my exam with another very young guy introduced as a "doctor". (He was an intern I later learned.) On the day of the surgery, the intern performed the procedure. I wish I had asked, "Dr. Ratner, why aren't YOU doing this procedure?" The spot on my upper lip was small. A Mohs procedure should gradually take a small amount of skin around the affected area to test for cancer cells. This process may need to be repeated a few times but the objective is minimal removal of skin in steps. This intern cut a hole the size of a dime above my lip. Clearly, cutting a large hole would mean they could streamline the procedure. I now have a huge scar from what could have been a minimal incision and my lip is asymmetrical. Shameful. read more

THANK YOU DR. RATNER AND DR. TANG! And Ana the medical assistant who held my foot so I wouldn't kick them in the face by accident when getting the shot! This is a little yucky to review on yelp, but I am so happy whatever. I've had plantar warts for such a long time---I'm a runner so I think they were really deep in my foot. I tried so many treatments-freezing, garlic, duct tape, but the only thing that worked was Bleomycin, which my dermatologist sent me to them for since she didn't do it. It's a bit of a pain since you have to go back to multiple treatments, but I kept up with it and I am finally rid of them. Dr. Ratner and Dr. Tang and the entire staff there is great--I've had both of them give me the shots. They are so nice, truly care and prepare you/hand-hold you through everything so I'm pretty surprised about the other reviewer's experience with Bleomycin at their office, I mean, it's painful but I expected it! I could run the next day too, since I was training for a half-marathon. The only downside is that sometimes there can be a wait, but it doesn't bother me because I know they are popular and I'll be well taken care of. read more

Dr. Ratner is now at Mount Sinai on 15th street. She is the absolute best MOHS surgeon in NYC and her wonderful, caring and compassionate staff thankfully followed her to her new location. I read the other reviews and was astounded. It sounds like they saw someone else. The Dr. Ratner I saw was quick, appeared annoyed with my questions and wanted to move on. She did NOT fully explain things to me. There are other Mohs surgeons in NYC who are technically competent AND do not have a personality defect.
