We paid for Holiday Inn and got Motel 6 We paid for Holiday Inn and got Motel 6 We were so excited to see Tybee Island and loved the idea of the beach. So, when we booked our stay at the DeSoto Hotel we had high hopes for a great trip. While we had a decent (perpendicular) view of the beach, we had a better view of the parking lot below. The room was the worst I've ever had (anywhere in the world), with the 2nd worst being in Vegas (where the carpet s moved when the lights went out). We were greeted by the smell of mildew and a broken light switch, before wondering if we'd made a mistake. Luggage stayed on top of the bureau and writing table, because the cupboard and drawers were too filthy to add our things. The bathroom was beyond disgusting, and after we nearly fell into the toilet three times, due to the loose seat, we realized we were slipping into someone else's filth. On further inspection, it was clear that this toilet had not been cleaned before our arrival. Nor had the shower or floors. One of us dropped a harpin and reached down to grab it and got a handful of someone else's hair! The only thing that was clean were the sheets on the comfortable beds. We called the front office for help with a plugged drain in the shower and asked for a clean shower curtain. We got someone to our room on the double to fix the clog but got the drain cover replaced and no shower curtain. And can I add here....how can you have a beach hotel with a towel rack for two towels only, hanging over the dirty toilet, in a bathroom with no fan? It just doesn't make sense. Breakfast wasn't great and the shower was clogged on the morning we checked out, so my sister drove back to North Carolina without a shower, and I went to the airport to find something healthy. Overall, my hope is that this was a one-off occurrence, but since the cleaning personnel are men, it makes me wonder if others have the same experience. I left a list of things that need tended to in our room, so the next guest doesn't have the same experience, and when I was asked if we enjoyed our stay, I simply said we were grateful for the comfortable beds.

Room 204, ocean view room with dumpster aromatics.

So heartbroken... Selected this hotel based on a few gorgeous deceiving pictures off of hotels.com.... when we arrived the ocean view room that we were given was actually a dumpster view with a sliver of ocean in the background. The hotel front desk was very polite and kind and did her best to see if there was any way she can accommodate moving us to another property or another room but unfortunately there was no availability. It is what it is and unfortunately we are stuck but this is not what we were expecting. They provide only 2 towels to use for the shower, they do not provide towels for pool or beach for you will need to bring your own. Also, they do not offer complementary umbrellas and loungers as advertised, they charge $29 per person.

This hotel was clean, friendly and on the ocean. Our room was great for the price. Tybee is a small Island so we had easy driving access to all destinations. A fun little getaway.

Screen capture of a video we took of our shower urned up as high as it would go. Adjusting the shower head made no difference.

This star is for the location and proximity to the beach. We stayed in Rm 110. Here's why the the hotel doesn't get 5 stars: 1. Motion sensitive AC. I get that they want to save a buck but what they end up doing is making customers sleepless therefore miserable, and that makes for a lousy experience. 2. Not all bedside outlets received cords. Why, we can't tell. Frustrating for the person in our party who uses a medical device that requires an outlet. 3. The water pressure in the shower was the worst I've ever experienced. We never felt clean. It felt like sunscreen and salt clung to every pore no matter how much soap we used. the shower dripped when it was off. had to lay it down or the dripping would have made us crazy. It stopped eventually and we'd hang it back up. If one of the pleasures of a hotel for you is an amazing shower experience, swerve. 4. Don't be fooled. by the idea of a "shared balcony." It's a walkway outside your room. And nearly every other room. 5. The room smelled musty. 6. The breakfast was only ultra-processed things in packages. 7. The wifi was intermittent. It would just drop off after 5 minutes and you wouldn't even notice it. Never a consistent full fan of strength. Not even over taxing it... just browsing Instagram... Drumroll for 8... The utter waste of money. We stayed here for our 29th anniversary. Splurged 300/ night on what we believed would be an amazing beach stay experience. It wasn't. Find another place to stay.

For the price, this is definitely a rip off. Not a 3 star either. Tv doesn't work. Bugs. Slimy mold and hair in shower, no toilet seat top and no bathroom fan. When you flush, toilet keeps running. Just nasty. I'm upset because Hotels.com had great reviews. What a lie. Bed is very comfortable, air conditioner works well. No foul smells and nice toiletries. Hotel is literally on beach. Never again.

Heater not cleaned out. Nasty smell.

Old but nice. Clean and breakfast is included. Room is little and pool is little. On nice quiet beach. Likely wouldn't stay again.

However, the condos are now more run-down, and there are a couple problems that should be addressed. First, the fact that smoking is still permitted on the balconies is ridiculous. Secondhand smoke, as we all know, is toxic and immediately harmful. The beach view is the key feature to this place, and everyone should be able to sit on the patio to enjoy it without the smell of cigarette smoke. This year I brought a floor fan to put on the patio with me, but it did not prevent the smell of smoke. There is no safe level of breathing secondhand smoke whether you are indoors or out. Smoking needs banned on the patios. The second issue is with the mildew smell of the air vents. The first two days this week, all I could smell is fresh laundry. Apparently, there are dryer sheets on the air filters, which is loaded with toxic chemicals btw. However, the rest of the week, it smelled strongly of mildew every time the AC kicked on. That could be a serious issue for those with asthma or mold allergies. Third, the kitchen could definitely use an update, specifically the scratched nonstick cooking pans, which are toxic (you knew that was coming). Those need replaced with new ceramic pans. And one last note - I find it absolutely ironic that I witnessed the maintenance man threatening a lady in the pool that he would call the health department and have her kicked out because she removed the rope that separates deep/shallow ends. Yes, call the health department, please, and ask them about all the issues I listed as well. Folks, overall this is a decent place to stay with perks like the beach view, free coffee, and an easy walk to the pool. However, be aware of the negatives that could potentially harm your well-being. We go on vacation to relax and de-stress, not come home with lung cancer. Seriously.

There were always cold drinks in the mini fridge, ice in the cooler, water in a pitcher, snacks in a bowl and best of all something homemade every day. I can't decide if my favorite was the rocky road bars, or this chocolate peanut buttery rice crispy like dessert. We stayed in both the Sunrise Suite and the Starfish room because neither were available for all five days. Both are fantastic! Hot roomy showers, oh so comfy robes, soft sheets and towels, mattresses that were not too soft nor too hard, perfectly painted, and well chosen decor. The house has a covered porch on three sides so there are loungers in both the shade and in the sun by the pool. My favorite spot was the swing. The beach is a five minute walk away, not crowded at all, and made for long walks. I love to travel and try new places, but Surf Song on Tybee is a place I will look forward to returning to in the years to come. I wished we lived closer so we could visit several times a year.
