I do not recommend the baklava because usually it is crispy and has honey, but this baklava was not crispy and also was not very sweet. The chocolate chip cookie was standard, but there was also nothin special there. The Viral Dubai Chocolate Strawberry cup was actually kind of small for $15, although it was the tastiest thing we've had there. So basically the desserts we got were fine, but nothing excellent. Inside the bakery is spacious with the cakes stored in display cases in three different locations. Some of the cakes were baked in different sizes, so I could take home a small one, get a whole cake version, or grab a slice and sit at a chair provided inside the cafe. I ordered two cakes: a tres leches and a slice of the coffee crunch cake, and when we mentioned that we were taking these home, the staff put the cakes in a small little box. Upon returning home, we opened these up and ate them. The first one we ate was the tres leches. Living in the Bay Area, I was introduced to tres leches, and since then when I see a bakery selling tres leches, I ask for one. This one is also very delicious. The cake has absorbed the milk and cream so the sponge is squishy and moist. The sweetness was light and just right, and even though I shared this with the family I might have been able to eat this all on my own. The second was the coffee crunch cake, and maybe this is because I love cake but this one was my more favorite. The first bite was fantastic. The robust aroma of the coffeeI felt that in my tastebuds too. The cake's surface is sprinkled with chunky bits of toffee crunch; this gives a great texture. The cake is split into 3 layers and each one had a thick mouse like cream that was so milky and smooth. I enjoyed each bite and was truly disappointed when I ate the late piece. I also wished I ordered a whole cake of this one because this was also lightly sweetness, which also felt like I can eat more of it. Another happy treat was the prices. Cakes in the Bay Area are pricey, but these cakes were at affordable prices. Delicious and affordable? I would have more cake eating days. I cannot believe I never set afoot into this bakery until now, and I'm going to need to redeem this. I had a sweet tooth after an event and found this dessert place on yelp. I drove over to this place and when I entered I was greeted by staff. The staff were very friendly and polite. I selected 2 chocolate chip cookies, 1 red velvet cookie and snickerdoodle cookie. The chocolate chip cookie was the start of the show. The cookie was moist, gooey in the middle and very flavorful. The red velvet cookie was also moist and flavorful. The snickerdoodle cookie had too much sugar on the cookie for me. First time here. I was craving Dubai chocolate and decided to give it a try. The chocolate itself is a pretty small size for the price, $10. It looks good but unfortunately it does not have the same taste as a Dubai chocolate bar. The pistachio butter flavor is nonexistent and the kadayif isn't as crunchy as I believed it should be. I visited Berkeley from Portland, Oregon in December of 2025. Portland is known for it's artisanal bakeries one of the better of which is called Baker & Spice. So when I saw "Desert and Spice" in Berkeley I went in. I ordered a banana cream layer pastry of some sort. I ate it in front of the store and it was great. Really good. So I went back in and looked around. They had a lot of stuff that looked good. The flourless chocolate cake was very tempting but I bought a chocolate chip cookie. Went out, ate it in front of the store and it was so good I went back in and bought three more to take home. Two of them actually made it back to Oregon. Anyway I am a chocolate chip cookie hound. I know every place to get a chocolate chip cookie in my town. The chocolate chip cookies I got at Desert and Spice were the best I have had in a decade or more. I know how good a cookie is or isn't is a very subjective thing but whatever your taste the cookies I got at Desert and Spice were killer. The texture was on the border of a biscuit like crumble but a little softer and more coherent or cake like, the chocolate was chopped fine, plentiful and evenly dispersed in the cookie, and the cookie had just the slightest hint of some kind of spice. THIS PLACE IS GOING UNDER Overpriced. Quality: meh quality. Paid $4 for a chocolate chip cookie. It didn't even have nuts, and it was kind of doughy, i.e., too much flour and improperly baked. It wasn't awful or anything, and there were some other things that looked OK, but everything was WAAY OVERPRICED. The people who ran the place seemed unenthusiastic. Place was poorly laid out, and it looked like they had scant business. No coffee or bevs, which you'd think would be a no-brainer for a place like this. The only other bakery I know that charges this level of prices is the Feelgood Bakery in Alameda, but IT IS TOTALLY WORTH IT. Actually, Feelgood doesn't even charge as much as Dessert & Spice. D&S has slices of cheesecake and creme brulee and whatnot for, like, $8. Macarons are $2.50, I believe, for a dinky little cookie. This is even more than Whole Foods charges. You know you got problems if your prices are higher than Whole Foods. I didn't try any of this. Maybe it's fantastic, but I will never know. This place is going under. Soon. Guaranteed. read more

I'm so sorry to say it. I never like posting bad reviews and usually places I try are decent. This chocolate cake is one of the worst I've had. I stopped into the bakery because it looked new and I looked to support local business. The cake slice was $6.99 and the size alone was not worth the price. But then I bit into it and it was rock hard and dry. I can't bring myself to try another bite because chiseling through it is upsetting. Either this cake is several days old sitting in the open air or they burnt it in the oven and decided to frost it anyway. Their tagline is "fresh out the oven" and I'm more disappointed than upset but that is just not true. I'm glad I got it because I know now. But it feels like a scam if they are really taking people hard earned money for this quality product. I'll try again in a couple months to see if they've improved. Hopefully they do. read more

This is a hidden gem!! We went after 8p and they were still open which is so rare to find a bakery open this late. They still have quite a few items available and everything still looked fresh. We got the chocolate ganache torte and pistachio marscapone eclair. The ganache was rich and decadent, moist with a deep chocolate flavor. The pistachio eclair also had a good flavor and the cream was fluffy although the eclair shell was a bit soggy which would be expected for any eclair that's not straight out of the oven.
