I liked the old style French menu with a few of the classics that you don't see anymore. The food was ok lamb shank cooked to the extreme dry and void of any taste. The beet salad was ok nicely balanced. The voul au vent was not bad there was a piece of chicken bone that I almost cracked a tooth on. The branzino was really good excellent presentation. The apple tart was so small the scoop of ice cream completely covered it. I was looking for a nostalgic food trip this evening, didn't quite get there. Stopped by for a meal as we were riding our Citibikes along the East Side. The service was a bit slow even though it was empty. Tried the Merguez omelette, Croque Monsieur and the burger. All the plates were good and they all came with a little salad and fries. Can't go wrong with fries at brunch! Fabulous restaurant across the board! My friend and I dined here for lunch yesterday. We both had the mussels and french fries - both delicious! Warm delicious rolls! I had a scoop of vanilla ice cream for dessert and my friend ordered the profiteroles. Three members of tonight's foursome were running late due to traffic on the GW. Accordingly, I arrived early - actually on-time for my 6:45 reservation. I've never been here before, but it's been on my list of want to visit restaurants for a long time. To the restaurant's credit, they seated me straight away while I waited. To their discredit, no one thought to offer me water or a drink for 20 minutes even though they both seated and took the order of the table next to mine. In fact, the gentleman who gave the table next door water, didn't even spare me a glance. Did I mention the outside temperature this evening exceeded 90F? Now, to counteract the abysmal service, the food was very good. I had the grilled calamari salad followed by the mussels. The calamari was very tasty but a bit chewy. And if you like your mussels very garlicky as I do you might be a bit disappointed. Again, very tasty, but a little under garlicky. The other members of my party enjoyed their meal. Seriously going downhill! Just ate here on a Friday night. I know the owner wasn't here because his car wasn't. Our food took 45-minutes to come out: a cheeseburger and mussels. Mussels were fine, but the cheeseburger was WAY undercooked. I've had this problem before and warned the waitress. She made some excuse that the reason the food took so long was that they ran out of hamburger and had to "make some fresh." Anyone have any idea what this means? A "fresh" hamburger as opposed to a precooked one they send out? I just don't get it. Then, the replacement comes and it's totally raw inside...I mean stone cold and raw. Seriously, there kitchen can't cook a hamburger??? I suggested maybe they hire someone from 5 Guys. I don't know...the other food seemed okay. Terrible brunch! Tiny portions! My friend and I came here for brunch today (Sunday) around 11:45am. We were only the second or third party dining in the restaurant at the time, but after we sat, more people trickled in. After we placed our orders, we were served a warm baguette with butter. Our dishes quickly arrived, and although the actual dishware is big, the content was not substantial. I ordered the crepes jambo (with mushroom and cheese) served with a mixed salad and pommes frites. I expected to get a fluffy crepe that would take up much of the plate; instead, I got two browned crepes rolled up like egg rolls. Each crepe "roll" could only feed me three bites each. That means my main course could be finished in six bites ... I'm a hungry girl. Six bites will not fill me up. The salad tasted like someone had poured a container of black pepper over it. I couldn't even finish it because it was so unbearable. The pommes frites were very limp and unimpressive. The only good things I have to say is that the prices were cheaper than most brunch places in the city. The waitstaff were polite and attentive. I also thought the actual restaurant was very cozy; it felt like we escaped to a little cafe in the countryside. Too bad I can't compliment the food as well. read more

I've never been to Paris but felt as if I was in a cute restaurant in Paris. This is a cute date spot too. We started off with a nice bottle of Bordeaux and bread- mini baguettes. The bread was not warm but oh well. For appetizers, we had the shrimp with guacamole. I was surprised that a French restaurant would serve guacamole but they did a good job. They had a lamb special that night, so I decided to go with it. I was hoping for lamb that was so tender it would drop off the bone, it was actually not as tender as I had hoped. I had to chew and bite and work to the lamb. The duck dish though, was amazing. The duck was crispy outside and soft inside. For desert, we had the thin apple tart with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was delicious. This is a great place to grab French food at reasonable prices! read more

I couldn't have asked for a better Valentine's Day dinner. The SO found this gem on Opentable, and I'm so glad he found this place!! Very charming and intimate, with a little bar up front and many cozy little tables. I've never been to France, but this is what I'd imagine a cute restaurant in Paris would be like. Service was impeccable- our wine glasses were never empty and our server was detailed in every explanation. We got the Valentine's Day menu, a 3 course meal for $50, an amazing deal. We both started off with the scallops, which came with some mushroom tomato risotto. The scallops were cooked to perfection and the tomato risotto was nicely balanced (i've had some pretty overwhelming tomato risotto meep) For entree, the SO got the steak and I got the red snapper. The portions were nice and large, and the white wine sauce on the snapper- WOW. Finished off with an apple tarte topped with ice cream. I noticed that there seems to be a lot of regulars at this place, which is always a good sign. I can't wait to come back!! read more

We arrived in Manhattan in the afternoon from California, we were tired and just looking for some place we could walk to from our hotel. We found this place and made a quick reservation. So glad we did! It has a lovely authentic bistro atmosphere, and classic bistro menu selections. They have a full bar, and the bartenders make a really good martini. The staff are all pleasant and when we became "regulars" popping in for a drink and another dinner, they remembered us and we enjoyed chatting with them. The food: I love duck confit so I ordered it (twice!) and it was sooo good! Nice duck legs with plenty of tender meat on them. I live on the west side, and this place marks my first venture into the Upper East Side. I was tentative when I exited the subway station - what was this foreign universe into which I had stepped? Deuces Amis welcomed this west-side transplant with open arms. The sauce on my monkfish was very delicious. The fish itself was not outstanding, but was well-cooked and overall enjoyable. It basically tasted a lot like tilapia. It sat atop a bed of steamed vegetables, which were fine. Nothing that blew me away. Portion size was also small. In a genteel residential neighborhood and with subdued but pleasant music playing inside. Ordered shrimp with guacamole and seafood and mushroom pastry as appetizers. The guacamole added an interesting flavor on top of the usual shrimp cocktail. The pastry was a little on the salty side. For main courses we had the beef shank and the special - wide trout with chickpea. The beef was juicy and tender (ordered medium rare) bu the fish was just ok and the chickpea was a little bland. Ended with an apple tart on ice cream for dessert. Overall a satisfying meal. read more

Cute neighborhood French restaurant. We came here on St Patricks day and ate at the bar, and the food and service was really good. Also sitting at the bar was a large group of friends going out to dinner to celebrate the feast day for St Patrick. We tried the grilled calamari and mussels (white sauce with garlic) to start, and it was well paired with white wine and beer. The complimentary bread dips well in the mussels sauce ;-) For main entree, we tried the puff pastry (vol au vent), which was quite photogenic, as well as the hanger steak. Both were delicious! Five stars here because it's a neighborhood joint that seems to attract regulars, the food is good, and the service was exceptional. Will be back! read more

I really like Deux Amis. The service has always been terrific -- for brunch as well as for dinner -- and the food is very good. They seem to have a menu that never changes, but they have some pretty excellent specials which mix it up. The wine list is very reasonably prices and there are a few off menu items that you can ask about. This is very much a neighborhood place and you get the sense that a lot of the people there have been coming for quite a long time and plan to continue going forward. Normally I would give this place 4 stars as that is what I feel their food and service deserve, but the 5th star they get for an x factor....something about the place I can't put my finger on which just makes you feel comfortable and increases the overall enjoyment of the meal. read more

This quaint French restaurant is quite the gem. I came here for dinner with Lapin yesterday. It was fairly easy to make reservations for the time we wanted. The place wasn't packed but it was fairly busy. Our waitresses were attentive but one of them had a weird sense of humor. We ordered a souffle for dessert and on the menu it said the wait time was 20 minutes. We were talking while waiting for our dessert and the waitress said in a very deadpan voice that we will have to wait 2 days for the souffle and walked away while still talking. I am not sure if she was joking or not, but it was a bit odd. Lapin ordered Escargots and he loved it. He loved dipping the warm bread into the leftover garlic sauce. I ordered the Vol Au Vent which was delicious. Lapin even remarked it was the first time he heard me using the word "delicious" to describe a meal. The puff pastry was crispy and cream sauce was rich and went amazingly well with the lettuce the pastry was displayed on. The chicken was soft, tender, and melt in your mouth deliciousness. Lapin ordered Boeuf Bourguignon for his entree. The portion was a smaller than expected but the stew was rich and hearty. The waiter was generous enough to bring extra pieces of bread to soak up all the yummy gravy. I had the pan roasted chicken breast with potato gratin. The chicken was tender but it was a bit bland and underwhelming. The chocolate souffle was good but we both liked the pistachio ice cream that came with it. The pistachio ice cream was sweet and had an understated pistachio taste. Lapin would definitely visit again, even if its just for the escargots and pistachio ice cream. read more

Excellent meal and great service! We had a business meal here tonight, and from the attentive bar staff to the table, the experience was perfect. Small venue, but great food. The escargot is really the go to starter and is perfectly prepared, as you would expect from a top notch French restaurant. The special tonight was a fall off the bone lamb shank, and the tarts at dessert were fantastic both in presentation and taste. The wine list is not extensive, but the selections are all reasonable and tasty. The final bill was well within expectations, proving once again that it doesn't have to be super expensive for great food in NYC. read more

I was very disappointed. The place is crowded, and the food so so. I had a chicken couscous, well if you ever ate a coucous you wouldn't have recognized one. A tasteless piece of cheap chicken a few vegetable and a watery gravy. As for the cotes du Rhone by the glass we call it "piquette" in France. The service was friendly.
