Finally. I've been on the search. City after city. 6 different French restaurants in Chicago. Not to mention Washington DC and other cities. But I finally found authentic steak tartare. Hand cut. Not run through a blender. The closest to the nest that I've had in Paris. Ambiance: 10/10 Steak tartare: 9/10 Pomme fritte: 7/10 Service: 10/10 Don't get me wrong these fries were good. Better than all the others. Not quite good as in Paris. It was a joy to eat here. And I feel like I've finally found a place that compares to Paris. Was visiting a friend who lives in the area and it was highly recommended. Decided to give it a try and oh martini haha ! A very good French martini , our waitress Diana was amazing , friendly and very helpful . The salmon was absolutely divine and we also had a charcuterie board and dessert . I just fell it was a bit too dark in there so maybe some more lights would make it for a better experience , specially while browsing the menu . While in the theater district I decided to satisfy my craving for steak and fries. I looked up a place nearby and this one came up. It was a 12 minute walk from my original location. I played myself by getting the pre frixe menu. I did not care for the French onion soup at all. It has a sour taste to it..not savory. I asked for my steak medium well. It came exactly to mh liking. I had not had read meat in a while and I might have been low on iron. It was tasty. I ordered the creme brulee for desert which was yummy. I sat at the bar. I will definitely asked to be seated next time because the bartender hovered over me a lot. I didn't need much service. The steak was good next time I will have the salmon. French Bistro in Midtown West, minutes from Penn Station or Port Authority so the location is quite convenient. I made a reservation to be safe, as many restaurants now ask if you did so. This place is quite packed every night so it was the way to go. I came here for dinner post showtime and my son and I over ordered but happily enjoyed everything. I think our eyes are way bigger than our stomachs. Starters: - French onion soup, au gratin, was perfect. Great onion profile and lots of it. Not overly salty so that was good. - Beef tartare, classic French bistro staple, must order this. The portion was quite generous and it was delicious. We couldn't stop eating it. The petite toasts were a nice accompaniment as well as the raddiccio salad - cheese board, IYKYK, I never met a cheese I didn't like. This board was matched with nice pairings. Think grapes, fig jam, and marcona almonds. The cheese were a classic French variety - bleu, comte and brie. For our entrees, my son opted for a sandwich and I got the steak. His croque Madame was really delicious. The bread, the ham, the baked cheese and the fried egg was so savory. Yummy. My steak was a sizeable portion but I purposely ordered the bigger ounces since I know we'd share. Fries are nice and skinny, perfectly seasoned. Our waiter was attentive and I asked for the table next to us given all the food I know we were getting. He was not sure if he could accommodate but I insisted he check with management. They came over and put it together for me. I appreciated that given a table for two, for how much we ordered, it'd never fit. Totally would return. Came here for restaurant week for the prix fixe lunch. I ordered the French onion soup, steak frites, swapped my frites for a salad, and crème brûlée for dessert. The French onion soup was classic and good. Perfectly cheesy, with that melted Gruyère, and the broth was not too salty. Steak was hanger steak, which I never usually get, so it felt like I was getting a premium steak. I came with my parents so I got to try some of their fries, and it came with a lot of fries. We were very well taken care of by Pierre, the host, who was French by the way. I got to practice my French with him a little, which was a lot of fun! Our server Angel was also good. The atmosphere felt a bit like old NY slight diner like feel with French vibes. Dimly lit bathrooms. Bar area to one side. We had the table by the window so it was nice to look outside while we dined in. The dessert was fine. Also got a decaf americano for $7. We asked for steak sauce and they gave like a gravy au poivre. The steak also came with a seasoned butter, which I totally overlooked when he took the order but I didn't know what to do with that glob of butter beside the steak. The meat itself was rich enough so I didn't need that butter. It was a lot of food, so we ended up packing up quite a lot to go, and it was enough for a whole other meal. I bought my husband dinner from here for his birthday. We didn't stay because we have a newborn but we did order to go. I would like to come another time for a date night because it actually was really nice inside. The staff was very nice to my 4 year old son and gave him a paper and pen to draw with. The food was excellent. We both ordered the hanger steak with fries and it was delicious. Surprisingly great reheat value with the fries! Honestly, I have nothing bad I can say about Steak Frites Bistro. We came in as a party of 10 on a Thursday afternoon for our team's holiday lunch. We were able to make a reservation over the phone about a month prior to the date and everything worked out great. We had a long table for our party and all of us did the lunch prix fixe, which was a steal at $40 for a starter, entree, and dessert. There is a $8 upcharge if you want the steak frites. To start, I had the Pate de Campagne, which was honestly a huge portion and I loved that it came with a side of salad. For my main, I had the Steak Frites, of course. It came out perfectly cooked and it was such a generous portion size, I didn't finish my fries. For dessert, I had the Pot de Creme du Chocolate which was so chocolately and decadent. Perfection. Service was very attentive and the drinks were fantastic. Despite the large party that we were, we never felt rushed or pushed to leave. There are the big known steak houses all over NYC, and ever so often you run into this small neighborhood style restaurant that happens to delight. Steak Frites is just that kind of place. Walking in reminded me of the places I used to visit in Paris - away from the regular tourist traps, on a side alley, that had the nicest staff and amazing food. This is a small place - with a very intimate atmosphere. It was just me that night, so I grabbed the bar seat for my meal. The maître d' was pretty good and made me feel comfortable in the place immediately. Older gentleman, who seemed to be of French decent. The bartender knew what he was doing and fixed me a good boulevardier. They also had 1664 on tap - so I had to have it. Ordered the signature steak and frite dish done medium rare - a dry aged NY strip - and oh boy did they deliver. Seasoned perfectly with almost a nice crust. The center was still bloody and warm. The garlic herb butter on top just made the entire thing taste so much better. It's been a few days and I am still thinking about it - with my mouth watering. The chicken came with the creamiest buttery mashed potatoes, while the burger and steak came with crispy, skinny fries. The porterhouse also came with a well-dressed petite salad to share. Cozy French bistro/bar. We were welcomed by a friendly French man who seated us early for our reservation. We sat in the room that has the bar. We liked it there , very casual. They have a great pre fix dinner and lunch menu and I highly recommended if you want to try a few items. The meal starts out with a very good bread basket with whipped butter. I had the French onion soup, hanger steak frites and the chocolate tart. My husband had the filet mignon from the main menu that had a delicious au povre sauce over it. The meat was cooked as we requested and the frites that came with our main course were crispy with just the right amount of salt. Our cocktails were good as well, we have one boulevardier and two vodka martinis. We felt the prices were reasonable, food portions were large and the service was polite and respectful. 2025 NYC Restaurant Week review! My wife & I have theatre plans and its restaurant week in New York City. Now, I work in Brooklyn and I'm surrounded by the best Italian restaurants. For *NYC* restaurant week, my go to is a French restaurant. Did you know there are more French restaurants in New York City than in France? Also, Restaurant Week is not about eating a cheap meal. It's experiencing an upscale restaurant with the best they have to offer. Here are my rules: 1- Don't order a hamburger off the restaurant week menu. You can get a burger anywhere. Be adventurous! 2- If there is an upcharge on a certain item, don't cry about it. If you're concerned about money then find a spot with a Restaurant Week Lunch special. It would have been easier to pick a spot near the theatre but the menu and interior at Steak Frites Bistro looks like a fun spot. And it's very easy to get to! We walked from Penn Station, its only a few blocks away. After we finished with dinner, the theatre was another few blocks away. Easy peasy! We arrived early so we had a drink at the bar while waiting for our reservation. My wife ordered a well crafted cocktail: The LAVENDER 75 made with lavender infused citadelle gin, st-germain, lemon and topped with sparkling wine. For my cocktail, I ordered the BOULEVARDIER LA POIRE Made with rye whiskey, campari and sweet vermouth. Ooh La La! Once seated, I placed my three course order: PÂTÉ DE CAMPAGNE I'm not sure what country style pâté of duck & pork is but it was excellent. It was enough to feed two people so be aware you're going to be in pâté heaven. I don't think I saw the cassis mustard, the plate had a dollop of jam? STEAK FRITES This is the entire reason why my go to meal is French. That steak cut was cooked perfectly! It had an amazing sear around the entire cut. Steak that was cooked "perfectly" with a silky Au poivre sauce and lets not forget the "Frites". Oh so good. C'Mon, admit it. The French just own fries! Pâté de Campagne: Pleasant, elegant, and surprisingly plentiful. Onion Soup Gratinée: Not too salty, extremely savory, and absolutely cheesy. Shoe String Fries: Crispy and criminally addicting. This place was awesome. We called to make a reservation as we drove in from New Jersey. We arrive earlier than our reservation (8 PM) and found perfect parking out front. We were sat up at the front which reminded me of a bar but no big deal. They brought out a bread basket and it was delicious. We ordered the streak and fries and they came out almost immediately. My wife and I probably could have shared a plate because we had the equivalent of a full steak and fries left over. We ordered our steak medium and it was perfect! Owner and staff were really kind and outgoing for his bday. Brought a flight of beers for him and waiter explained the choices and makeup. He liked Allagash!
