We had a lovely, late pre-show meal yesterday. The service was very attentive and the food just what we wanted from a traditional French restaurant. We used the lunch Prix Fixe menu, which was affordable at $47 for three choices, and had an impressive variety. I had the French Onion soup, Beef Bourguinon, and chocolate mousse. Had lunch here before a matinee. They are only open for lunch on days there are matinees. We were only given the price fixed menu which is $47 for 3 course lunch (and $70 for dinner). It's encouraged to order from this menu but we wanted à la carte. Luckily we could order à la carte; I viewed the menu on their website. I ordered the French onion soup burger which they promote as an award winner. I was not impressed. I asked for the burger medium but it was definitely overcooked. It tasted like they put Dijon mustard on it; I don't know how that flavor relates to French onion. I now know I like Dijon on a burger. The fries were good, crispy. A good French restaurant in NYC. I found it okay, but nothing that really stood out. The ambiance is dimly lit and has kind of a rustic feel. Great for a quiet dinner and a date night. However, I do have a complaint about the table I sat at being unbalanced. I was eating with a friend and we both discussed how wobbly the table was. The chair I was sitting in didn't feel perfectly stable either. Table aside. The service was good. Waiter was attentive with keeping our water glasses topped off and making sure our food was fine. I do like that he asked if we had a Broadway show to go to and we told him we did. Foodwise, I went with the French Onion Soup for my appetizer. Might have been my first time having French Onion Soup and I liked it a lot. Cheesy with the Gruyère cheese and the beef broth tasted good. There was also bread, which I believe was just baguette and butter. Nothing to write home much about. My main entree was the Coq Au Vin. Red wine sauce was delicious and the Amish chicken was cooked to perfection without being dry. The meat fell off the bone easily. Wasn't the biggest fan of the Lardon, which was this fatty pork. Maybe it if were cooked to be more cripsy with most of the fat rendered I would like it. Dessert was Mixed Berries À La Creme and it was good, but it did kind of tasted mostly like vanilla ice cream with berries. Still, at least the dessert wasn't overly sweet. All in all, I enjoyed my time here, but I didn't think it was that special and I guess I had slightly higher expectations due to the price. read more

I don't usually do fine dining, but I was so glad I did on Thursday night. A colleague of mine recommend recommended this place when I told her I was going to see a Broadway show that evening. I stopped in only planning on getting the French onion burger, that she suggested, but wound up with a three course meal. I started my meal with the Oeufs Mimosa (deviled eggs). They were incredibly delicious and smooth. I ate them all very quickly and even eat the sauce underneath. Then, I ordered my French onion burger, which my colleague had suggested. The burger was so melt in your mouth. It came on an English muffin that was incredible. A must try! Finally, I decided to order a dessert and had the peach Melba. The peach was so well done as was the raspberry sauce and the tiny cone. It was a deconstructed ice cream with peach on top. The wait staff was very kind and checked in on me multiple times. I also loved how everyone kept using French although I don't think most of them were from France or of French descent. It definitely helps at the mood though. Came into the city for a much needed get away. Friend is a local chef and said Le Rivage was the move so we checked it out. I made a reservation a week ahead of time on Open Table. Confirmed. We invited our other chef friend to enjoy a night on town. I ended up calling earlier during the day to push back reservation 30 mins as friends were coming from Delaware and Jersey. Restaurant was great with the accommodation. We started off with a few apps and they were great. Also had a blood orange margarita and excellent. Outdoor seating does not have heat lamps so you will freeze if you're dining alfresco during the chillier times of the year. Cozy, classy, lovely ambience. Loved all the tiny, white twinkle lights that made the space feel truly festive. The vibe was the highlight of our experience. However, be prepared that the space is small and too many tables are too tightly packed together. You're literally sitting next to strangers whose table is barely 5 inches away. Prepare to listen to some interesting conversations and keep your conversations PG. Not suitable if you're looking for an intimate setting where you can feel close to the person that you're with. Noise level gets high once the space fills up around 6 PM. Get a reservation. This restaurant is popular for all the theatergoers, since it's next to theater row, so the whole experience is catered to ensure that you eat quickly and are out of there to make it to the show. That felt very rushed and hectic. I could not relax or enjoy. Our waiter and all the staff made me feel very rushed and we had to change tables because there was another reservation right after ours, even if we haven't spent two hours dinning yet. On Fridays and Saturdays, you're forced to do a prefix meal for $70: one appetizer, an entrée, and dessert per a person. Some confusion with pricing happened at tables all around us, as more additional charges were added for no reason. Good money making scheme. They're running here during busy, peak dining times right before Broadway shows. Would not return just for feeling so rushed and pressured after paying so much money for a meal that was just OK. Escargot for appetizer was delicious. Great garlic butter pesto in which the snails were served. Seafood, pancake for appetizer was very underwhelming. Borderline bland. Almond trout was tender and delicate. Get this if you're not very hungry or are watching your calorie intake. Poulet sous brique (chicken in sage oil with butternut squash purée) was the highlight of the meal. Good portion of protein. Half a chicken. Tiny dollop of purée. Very well, balanced flavors that he could actually taste and enjoy. Highly recommend. Crème brûlée tasted very bland. I was eating it and not feeling anything. What a this disappointment. The moment we mentioned pre-fixe and mocktail, his entire demeanor changed. Despite being located on the tourist heavy Restaurant Row, this place is serving up some yummy French brasserie food. They even have some outdoor seating, if the day is nice enough. Great calming French vibes among all the busyness. Steak Tartare: A classic French starter! The meat was finely chopped and so tender, definitely high quality. Came pre-mixed, except for the quail egg, so packed with nice spices and herbs. The toasted bread was a good pairing, though felt kinda skimpy given the amount of meat. French Onion Soup Burger: For the next course, I had my beef cooked. Everyone seems to rave about this burger, so now I understand why. We came to Le Rivage to celebrate Christmas, so our experience may not be reflective of their usual experience. First, let's start with the service. The staff were all very friendly and kind, where they were welcoming and receptive, but only when they finally have time to attend to your table. After we sat down, it took approximately 30 minutes before a waiter came to us to write down our order. It doesn't seem like there's any waiters that are assigned to specific tables, and since it's Christmas they all appeared very preoccupied. It took another 20 minutes for them to clear our entrees. Although inconvenient, we understand how busy and short staffed they were on Christmas, so hopefully this was a unique experience given the holiday rush. For appetizers, we started off with the foie gras, which was the BEST I ever had, with a playful and delicious play between savory and sweetness that paired perfectly with the soft brioche! I can't recommend this dish enough and hope they add this to their regular menu! The escargot was plentiful, but a bit light on the seasoning, which was an easy fix with the table salt. The deviled egg was on the blander side as well, which was just okay and not too memorable. The French onion soup was INTENSELY flavorful, which I simply caution can overpower other more milder dishes. For the main we got the highly recommended Beef Bourguignon and the Blanquette De Veau. The Beef Bourguignon was unfortunately disappointing, where the short rib was chewy and a bit rough, which is evident in the video when I couldn't cut right through it. The red wine reduction was just okay and not as flavorful as we'd like, but I guess to each their own. The Blanquette De Veau had a wonderful sauce that paired perfectly with the scallion jasmine rice, but the veal was also quite rough and not that enjoyable, kind of tasted like white meat chicken chunks. The mushrooms were delicious and soaked in all the flavorful sauce, but the carrot wasn't cooked long enough where one piece was soft and the other hard to the bite. Unfortunately the entree was disappointing and really detracted from our entire experience, especially given how much we loved the foie gras. It's possible that this is a one off experience given how busy they were, but it definitely made our Christmas celebration dinner less enjoyable. Le Rivage has a lot of potential, especially since the foie gras knocked it out of the park, and perhaps their other selections may be more enjoyable than the ones we ordered. Unfortunately we didn't get the opportunity to enjoy the same wonderful Beef Bourguignon that many other diners raved about. I hope Le Rivage will continue to strive towards perfection, for this restaurant was beautiful and the staff, when they're available and not rushing, were very sweet and considerate, especially Stephan. The other waiter threw our check on our table because he was in a rush and our card fell off onto the floor, which although I understand things happen, it was nonetheless not that pleasant to witness and experience (I believe the host/manager Tommi saw this but didn't say anything). This is the only restaurant I eat at every time I am in NY. Normally I try to go to as many places as possible.. I'm a neophile, but Le Rivage is perfection. Every time I go I feel welcomed like an old friend and the service is VIP for everyone. The staff never misses a chance to make you feel valued. It is cozy and intimate and the food is always on point. If I live long enough I will try everything on the menu. This time I had the pate, the Beef Bourguignon, and the Peach Melba. Everything was good but the Beef was the best. The potatoes in it were creamy, buttery, and delicious. The beef fell apart and was perfectly seasoned. I saved some of the Lardons to the end and I was sad when they were gone. I will be back every time I am in NY. I am thankful for chef Paul and his family tradition of excellence. I went here for a birthday date with someone. She chose here, so we went there. We were seated quickly and the menu came fast. Our waiter was friendly, knowledgeable and made the experience memorable. The Steak tartare and escargots for the appetizer were amazing. I wanted to try escargot so why not here? Buttery, garlicky, incredible flavors, just incredible. I ordered beef bourguignon and she ordered canard à la orange. The beef bourguignon had a taste that made me go "If I was snowed in and only this was available all winter, I would not be upset in the slightest". The caned à la orange was a beautiful blend of fatty duck, tangy orange sauce, and they paired perfectly. Dessert, she ordered the molten chocolate lava cake and I had the crème brûlée. So one of our family friends recommended this restaurant to us, so we went before seeing Six on Broadway--which by the way, this spot is super close to the theatre! So fun! Anyways... I love French cuisine, so when my mom's friend recommended this to us, I was excited. For people who know me, duck is my absolute favorite meat AND duck a l'Orange is my favorite dish. Period. So I was excited to try this! However, for (I think) $42, this is not enough. You receive very little duck and the orange sauce is extremely bitter. The root vegetables were fine but kind of bland and did not add anything to the dish--it came with rice with green onions on top. It did not feel rich or luxurious which is what this dish should be! I was upset and ate what duck I had and didn't eat as much of the accompaniments. Presentation was also very clunky. My mom got the coq au vin and again, $38 for a chicken leg and a few vegetables is crazy! I don't mind spending that much on a good dish, but she was thoroughly unimpressed with the dish. I will say, the salad was great and the mustard and horseradish vinaigrette was very good. The crème brûlée was fantastic and the molten chocolate cake was so decadent and indulgent... but appetizers and desserts cannot save the entrees which should be the stars of the meal! This is simply a comment on the French Onion Soup burger, which I've only gotten for delivery. It should be on more lists. It's on some of them, but it belongs on them all. First, it comes on a king-sized English muffin, which, purists be damned, is the perfect vehicle for a burger because the meat itself gets to win best actor instead of best supporting actor. The onions and the Gruyère go together perfectly, and they're 2-for-2 in cooking it to medium rare when I order it medium rare. To those who agree, we should start a movement to make sure more people know about this burger. I made reservations at Le Rivage after reading the review by John Mariani (journalist and food and wine critic I respect). It is welcoming that this place offers the Prix Fixe menu all night, and not just before the shows. We had a reservation at 7pm after seeing the matinee and were seated right away. The space is warm and inviting, with string lights adorning the arches. The tables were WAY to close together though. There is no way to go to the restroom if you don't move the table completely out into the aisle, which disrupts everyone around you, including the servers. Our wine bucket just barely fit between our table and the one next to us, which crowded the space even more. There was also barely enough room on the table for our plates and glasses. I would take half of a star away if I could because of this. We took advantage of the very reasonably priced Prix Fixe menu with very generous portions. Here is what we ordered and what we thought: Steak Tartare - very fresh and flavorful with just a tad too much red onion that overpowered the beef. I would order it again though as I am a fan of steak tartare. Baked Stuffed Mussels - herbed cheesy breadcrumb mixture on top of mussels that were rich and fantastic! Steamed PEI Mussels - I love mussels, and these were right up my alley. However, there seemed to be cream in the sauce that was not in the description. That made them richer, so I could only finish half of the dish. The frites could have been fried for about two minutes more. They were too soft. Steak Au Poivre - Great flavor in the sauce, the potatoes and haricot verts were cooked and seasoned perfectly. The filet was a perfect medium rare. Crème Brulé and Chocolate Mousse- both perfect. We love being together, but have never cared about marriage. In addition my fiance hates weddings. Over some time I have come to the realize some of the benefits to being married. Now, even though my fiance didn't care about marriage, I knew that she would marry me if I asked, I just had to pop the question. I made a plan to fly out to New York and have my fiance go on a scavenger hunt through NYC that would eventually lead to Le Rivage where I would propose. The day to propose finally comes and me and my fiance are having a nice time exploring NYC, but I loose track of time while we explore Central Park. Suddenly I realize we are behind on time, me and my fiance rush to get back to the hotel so that we can get ready and make the reservation. I originally planned on going to the restaurant early and give the restaurant the ring and talk to them. There was also supposed to be a 3 course meal, but we had a Broadway show to get to immediately following dinner, so we couldn't push the time anymore. In the hurry to get back to get back to our hotel, I had to call the restaurant 3 separate time to push the reservation forward, then finally tell them I could not meet ahead of time and had to change plans a little. Here is where the Amazing service really shows. First of all, they got a tray top for me that they don't normally use to present the ring for me. They kept my reservation and worked with my shifting schedule. Then when we arrived at the restaurant, the GM Jeremy met with me to go over everything. At this point we were out of time. They switched the 3 course meal for single entrees and got out our entrees incredibly fast. Finally They brought out the ring as a dessert and I proposed as they recorded the whole thing for me. My fiance accepted my proposal and because of this restaurant had a great experience that she will keep with her for years. Stopped in after walking past this place for years when desperate for a table on Valentine's Day. In a way it confirmed why I've walked by it so many times. It really is a tourist trap type joint. While it has a nice ambience and overall pretty good service, the food just did not meet the price point. The French onion soup was pretty good. I will give it a 7.8. The steak frites was lame. Frenchie the owner has his own burger patty blend. the pattie was flavorful and the French onion soup just added more umami to a already tasty burger. only down side was i asked for medium rare and the patty tasted medium, but still very juicy. the bun added a very crunchy texture. while the fries was easily the best fries i ever had. 4.7/5 (4.9 if the patty was actually medium rare) sea bass: the fish was fresh, and light, served on a bed of rice, mixed with cilantro, tomato and pomegranate. the entire dish was light, and refreshing. the flavors of each element complement each other nicely 4.8/5 beef Tartar was a surprise, very tart because of the capers and lemon juice, so you don't feel heaviness of the raw beef and quail egg. the beef was very fresh and all the small tendons removed. 4.8/5 read more

We chose this restaurant because it was close to the theater we were going to after the meal. We both love French food so we thought this would be the perfect place to kick off our NYC trip. The ambiance is nice and the decor, while a bit old school, was warm and inviting. There was a certain buzz in the air as the place was filled with theater goers having a pre-show meal. And speaking of pre-show meals, the menu was a $70 prix fixe meal so that everyone could get in and out in a timely manner. Other times of day, they have a regular menu. We chose the Friseé Salad & Escargots as our first course, the Lamb Shank and Trout Almandine for our main course, and Molten Chocolate Cake and Crème Brûlée for dessert. The salad took us back to Paris where we would sit at a sidewalk cafe eating a Friseé salad for lunch most days. And I'll never forget having Escargot with my best friend on my first trip to NYC in high school. The other students were gagging at the thought of eating snails, but we were food adventurers and I've been a fan of them ever since. These were quite good, but I lamented the fact that they were not in shells. Instead they came in an odd metal dish which was blazing hot. It was a little tricky getting them out of the indentations without burning yourself or splattering butter and garlic all over the place. Our entrées were great. The Lamb Shank was perfectly cooked and the Trout was cooked perfectly. The layer of toasted almond slices combined with the lemon made this dish close to perfect. Desserts were a bit more pedestrian than the rest of the meal, but good nonetheless. And as promised, we all made it out of there in time to make it to the theater. Overall, I'd go back again. I'm always worried going to restaurants near Times Square as they are often geared to tourists who will probably never come back, so they often lean toward the bland and pedestrian. But this was an exception. It was a little pricey for what we got, but it fit our schedule to a tee. read more

Went to Le Rivage after seeing a matinee performance of Cabaret and it was a perfect pick! The small cafe tables had a cabaret feel and the table lights lended a cozy feel to the room. I opted for the restaurant week special which included an onion tart, followed by broiled skate and a French cream filled beignet all for only $60. I started my meal with a Cabaret cocktail to stay in the mode of the show we had just seen. My mother and daughter both opted for the pretheater menu which was also a great deal at $70. They had a choice of app, entree and dessert. My tastings of their dishes included the coq au vin, mussels, the kohlrabi salad, seafood crepe, creme brûlée and the molten chocolate cake.
