Highly recommend a stop here. Taylor the hostess was amazing! She was greeting, seating, and busing tables all with a smile and sweet demeanor. There was a line and she didn't miss a beat, just quickly got the job done and done well. Maegan was also fantastic, with quick service, she checked in a couple of times (just the right amount), and the food (pulled pork sandwich and tater tots) and beer were lovely. Great stop fora dinner and a beer after walking Downtown Lexington. They are doing reservations through their website though. We were not aware of this when we arrived, but we lucked up and they had a table available. Ordered fried pickle chips, the bbq Mac Bowl, and a bacon cheeseburger. All of it was delicious. The fried chip pickles were crispy, well seasoned. The Mac Bowl had bbq pulled pork, cheesy and delicious. The bacon burger was one of the best ones we have had. They make it easy to shop their gift shop and pay your food bill. Waitress was AWSOME and knowledgeable. Will help you pick a brew and don't forget to pick up a growler for the road. read more

Drove in from WV to stop here. Got here 10 minutes before opening. I was waiting at door when another car drives up. Red head girl opens door and says to me standing at door she needs to get keg. Fine, I walked to counter to wait. She started talking to other couple and filling out some paperwork! After 10 minutes we left! We were prepared to purchase a few brews and at least 2 cases but the chilly, indifference had us walking out. I'd have dropped easily $200 PLUS tip but not now. We won't be back and the bar I work at I'll make sure we NEVER serve DB!! If this is what you call "customer service" y'all need a serious new HR person! My first visit to the Lexington location as I was traveling for work. Though as not as much of a beautiful view compared to Nelson County, this experience was awesome! I didn't realize how much of a variety of beers and cocktails DB offered. I had a glass of Churr All I Need and it was delicious! It was like I took a bunch of churros and swirled it in an amber lager. That doesn't sound good, but trust me it totally works. I also ordered their Keto Spaghetti (loved seeing that their spaghetti squash is homegrown) with grilled chicken, total yum! It was super filling and the cream based sauce was delicious - I wish I could replicate at home!!! The portion was great for the price. The veggies in my dish tasted fresh. My coworker had their Campfire Tacos and those looked amazing, they had excellent meat to topping ratio. Everyone from servers to managers were very pleasant to talk to while there. read more

We were extremely happy with Devils Backbone, expecially with how serious they take the Covid-19 proceedures. My wife and I went with our dog at the lunch hour for our aniversary, and the outdoor seating felt clean and well ventilated (and very dog friendly). They have cans they use to mark when the tables have been sanitized, the tables are all widely spaced apart and away from traffic, and there are wide open pathways to navigate when you have to be indoors. This was our first experience "dining in" anywhere since Covid began, and we felt very safe. We had the jumbo pretzel with queso, and while the pretzel itself is nothing to write home about both the mustard (with peppers) and the quesso were excellent, making for an overall very pleasing appetizer. We've always liked their beer, and would highly recomend the Schwartz Bier and the Blueberry Pie Ale. And our server Maura was very attentive without being intrusive, and got our dog a DB bandana! I think the only negative we could say is the brewery is close to the highway, but there is not much you can do about that (and it was pleasant outside regardless). Was in town for a VMI football game. So, the crew was thirsty cause the stadium has a 'strict' no alcohol policy (as compared to a lax one). I reached for a beer, glad that I was here. Beers are good. Apps for the group were tasty - don't leave without getting the smoked deviled eggs! Now several in my group were driving and needed non alcoholic bevvies. Well, you're ___ of luck on that front. Nothing behind the bar. Bartender told us go to the kitchen where they serve 'Coke products'. No good. It's 2019, place needs to step it up and get something behind the bar - something besides soda. What about water we inquired? Bartender directed us to some dispensers of tepid water. No ice. Arrived just after opening and the place was empty. I asked if they had outdoor seating that was dog friendly. I found it amusing that the hostess asked if I had a reservation and when told no, she took about forty-five seconds too look at her schedule and say, "we can squeeze you in." We were seated outside and had a wonderful experience. The beer was fabulous and our server Alex was great. I had the nachos with candied jalapeños and pulled pork. I have never had candied jalapeños before and I loved them. The place was clean with lots of spacing and floor markings and signs to maintain distance. The staff wore masks. Dinged for poor service and inability to run the restaurant portion. (19OCT18) Let's start with the one positive. We'd been looking forward to visiting Devils Backbone on our next trip through the region. The highlight of the evening was the beers on tap. Happy to wait the several minutes in line to enjoy the Vienna Lager while socializing with friends. Sadly, that was here the positives ended. Keeping it simple, we ordered 2 pork sandwich platters and one chicken. I wish I could comment on the food but after more than an hour wait and observing the party of eight ahead of us receive and finish their meal, our order was still missing in action. I wasn't so concerned at first. We were having a good time socializing. But the absolute disdain and rudeness shown by the dark hared guy working behind the counter was unacceptable, I civilly asked him to check the status of our order. He stamped in disgust and pointed to a row of orders saying its here, there all these that are ahead. Of course at that point he didn't even have my name to check because he flew off in a rage immediately. The woman I placed the order with wasn't much help either, spilling out excuses "we're not equipped to handle this" before I could finish my sentence. The only one that seemed to understand customer service was the pregnant dark haired girl (sorry don't know her name). She seemed genuinely concerned, comped the bill and tried to get the order moving. We waited another 15 min, and even she could not give a status so we simply left with nothing to show but a bad experience and no dinner... on to Cook Out as a sad alternative to hungry bellies. read more

Definitely the highlight of Lexington. Amazing and delicious food. The beer is tasty too. We did a flight and you can't beat 6 for $8 bucks. The food is served with gigantic portions. This place has expanded quite a bit since my first visit about three years ago. The kitchen is now open and they're serving food, there's a good sized dining area, and they've added a merch store. I'm sure there's a lot more to the expansion than I could see. The only negative I have is that prices have risen, mainly in the merch but it is comparable to other breweries I've visited. The beer is great and there's a very nice selection of I think it was about 12 different beers. My husband and I shared a flight on this visit just to decide what we wanted to order full pints of and of the six beers we tasted there was only one beer I wasn't a fan of. The pear lager, cran-gose and glitter...bomb? I forget the name but it was glitter something- those were my favorites. Vienna Lager is also an all-time fave, but I wanted to try the stuff I can't get everyday :) The food was also delicious! I had a "DB Sundae" which with their build-your-own sundaes you choose one protein and three sides which is served up in a jar with sour cream and half a cherry tomato on top. Presentation is really nice and the food tasted great! I had the chicken with Mac and cheese, avocado and chili. This is a spot we love to visit whenever we are in the area and I definitely recommend it read more

One of Virginia's most awarded breweries shows off their stuff in a rustic, true to character atmosphere in a more easily accessible location off I-81. College towns have many distinctive characteristics, but Lexington sets itself apart from the crowd with a top-notch production brewery. Like Terrapin in Athens (UGA) or Jolly Pumpkin in Ann Arbor (Michigan), Devil's Backbone's Outpost Brewery and Taproom sets a high bar for consistently quality lagers and ales. While the flagship Vienna Lager remains the start of the show and a big crowd pleaser, their seasonal and brewery-only offerings keep locals like me coming back time and again. It should be noted that the staff does a great job in providing events, big and small, to provide some variety. The annual hop harvest festival, live music on Friday nights, trivia, women's events, and specialty cask tappings are some of the events to consider. While the space inside is limited, the big windows provide easy viewing of the brewing equipment and picnic tables and umbrellas outside provide a bit of a bier garden feel while allowing visitors to watch cars roll by on Route 11 while drinking in the view and their favorite selection, be it an honest pint or sampler paddle. No prepared food is for sale, but there is a nice variety of Route 11 chips for purchase and you can always bring something in or have it delivered. Keep in mind, this is first and foremost a production brewery, so they don't stay open late, but it is still a nice, relaxing place to meet friends or make new ones. You can fill up growlers of any of their rotating 8-10 taps and on Wednesday the growler fills are half price! Plenty of merchandise to purchase and cold six-packs are available too. Regular tours (remember closed-toe shoes) on the weekends bring in more visitors who might also be in town for the Virginia Horse Center or the two schools, Washington and Lee University or Virginia Military Institute. Devil's Backbone is a bit different than many other craft breweries in the fact that they feature a disproportionate amount of quality lagers. While the original brewpub and meadows in Nelson County really is a must visit, this Rockbridge County favorite is a bit easier to access and certainly worth a stop for any craft beer fan or soon-to-be convert. read more

So usually this place is pretty good the food is good and the beer is good but the management and customer service is horrible. We made a reservation at what we thought was the devils backbone in Lexington for 18 people. We were told that it would be a 5$ charge per a person should we not show up or one in our party didn't show up. We left a credit card to ensure our reservation. We showed up at 615 with our entire party and we're told that it was the wrong location. We were told by a manager that he would try get ahold of the other property to explain the situation. My sister sat on hold for 18 minutes waiting to speak with someone. In our party we have some very elderly people and a newborn, this property sat us outside... when we tried to move the heater closer to our table a waitress ran out and grabbed the heater and scolded us for moving the heater closer to one of the elderly ladies. She said it was a social distance thing. Ummm excuse me when would a heater being moved effect covid restrictions when the tables are more than 6ft apart. After arguing with a manager we got one heater moved. Then we were scolded for having my son sat at another table because there was no room at ours and they tried to put him on the other tables check! After my sister being on the phone with the other location and father arguing with staff we were told that they would dismiss our "no show" fee because we were at the other location SPENDING MONEY! Clearly these people care about money and not their customers who flew here from California. I do visit Virginia often as my family lives here but I will under no circumstances be returning here with my large family. read more

I've had DB beers a number of times at Brewfests and from my local bottle shop when I lived in VA. They're got as solid line up of beers so I was excited to stop by their Taproom on a recent visit to Lexington. I ordered the double flight because why try 1 beer when you can try 8. The Cran-Gose was the winner hands down. Perfect summer feel. Not too sour. I liked the Mile 842 a lot as well. The others I tried were good beers for sure but no real stand outs in my mind. The tasting room is well appointed and set up for socializing with mostly hightops and a bar. The bartenders were super quick and courteous. Merch is available but clearly not the focus here. They served just what I needed after a 5 hour drive. So glad I got a chance to stop by. read more

Devil's Backbone may be the best craft-type brew more or less widely distributed at better beer sellers in the Mid-Atlantic. I don't think they technically qualify as a craft brew anymore as Anheuser Busch bought them, but that's a quibble. Their Gold Leaf is awesome, Vienna Lager is damn good. I get them all the time in northern VA, so I was excited to be able to visit the brewery when in Lexington. It didn't disappoint. It's a much more substantial and imposing facility than I would have imagined, a full fledged medium size brewery with a large distribution warehouse and sizable brewery vats and tanks. I'm guessing a plant tour would be interesting, though I was there to partake of fine brew, not tour. I had several varieties I haven't found distributed in DC area; they were fantastic. The bar area is large and really nice, adjoined by a bona fide Bavarian-type (low-frills) beer hall in which to hang out and drink, football games playing on large screens. There is a little outdoor area that seems pleasurable, albeit overlooking traffic on Rt. 11, with some cornhole games and the such. Staff are very friendly. The menu actually looked interesting, though I don't go to breweries to chow. It's about the beer, and Devil's Backbone is all about that. I went home with two cases of cans that I hadn't seen before, bought on well-earned faith. First, Earned Run Ale (perhaps they sell this at Washington Nats games, as it has a Nats logo) and the other, Striped Bass Ale. They both were amazingly good. The Striped Bass was astonishing, when I opened it up at home it instantly became my favorite Ale (now, can I get it in DC area?) The brews in the photos were the ones enjoyed on premise, first the O'Fest, a delicious German Marzen style lager, and the second an extra strength Kolsch, which was a revelation. Having spent much time in Koln (Cologne), where they serve Kolsch in small cylindrical glasses and take it seriously, I'm a fan of the variety. This was the best Kolsch I've had in the U.S. And they ain't kiddin' about the extra strength, it has a nice kick. Los deliciosos! Simply awesome brews, a fun place to visit in Rockbridge County, which in itself is a immensely beautiful place to be. read more

Their ERA might be my favorite but it is hard to go wrong with their Vienna Lager, which is one of their signatures. You can buy DB in stores but they have a lot more options in person, which is great because you can get a flight for $8. You will leave happy whether you are a fan of the light and easy to drink or the dark beers. They seem to always have a new beer every time I go, which, combined with their delicious standard go-to's, ensures I will continue to go over and over again. read more

Hands down one of the best brewery experiences I have ever had. Service was fantastic from every single staff member. I came with my dog and my girlfriend and they made sure my dog had water the entire time. Views are nice and the interior is extremely clean. Gift shop is also a really cool touch with plenty of things anyone would want to throw their money at. Beer is excellent and they have a good variety. We ordered food as well.
