When we first moved to Rome this was our favorite place to eat. But our last several times there have been nothing short of disappointing. The service is good but the food is not. I've tried several different dishes thinking maybe each one I did not like was because of my own taste. As an American of Italian descent I do have high standards for pasta and sauce, particularly from an Italian independently owned business. But I am also forgiving because I realize I have high standards. The bread was fantastic but the rest was barely edible at best. The pasta, homemade(?) was overcooked and dry. Hardly any sauce on the pasta which I'm not sure was a positive or a negative as the sauce was lacking in any flavor. Not enough garlic and way too much dried parsley. My partners gnocchi was burnt and the sauce, while different then mine, was equally unappetizing. Rome is lacking in good food, especially food with any diversity. So, not being able to get a decent meal at an "authentic" Italian restaurant was disappointing at best. So long $50.00. This will be the last time we "give them another chance". We love the pizza and antipasto at DiCastro's. My husband and I think they make the best pizza locally and so far the best in the 39 states we have checked out. Last summer our grandson came to visit from Texas. We had almost the whole family together and went to supper. I called DiCastro's Brick Oven about 4 hours before we wanted to be there. They seated us in the back room where we had great food and super service. So they even do well under pressure. It was a wonderful gathering and one I will always remember! read more

I ordered the jumbalaya for $16. It came out with 3 bites of sausage and 1 bite of chicken. The accompanying pound of pasta didn't compensate for such a weak entree. The waitress made no comment when she removed my dish that was 98% unchanged. Stay away from the entrees unless you like over priced pasta and sauce. The pizza here is pretty good! Nicely done, a little earthy, and they tend to use a lot of garlic-which I think is great. However, they seem to be trying to bend their menu towards pastas. They offer homemade pasta at an up-charge, and offer boxed pasta as the basic option. The basic option is what's represented in the menu prices, which are already pretty steep (for the value/quality of the meal). The sauces are thin and bland, and there isn't much substance in each meal. I recently ordered chicken in my pasta and I assumed it was raw at first, because each piece was fat. After leaving my husband said they only served him fatty chicken in his meal, and I couldn't believe that between the two of us neither of us got any enjoyable meat. After we left we considered what you get in comparison at a chain like Olive Garden and it's hard to justify the price point here. We were disappointed to have ventured beyond pizza, but we will return in the future. Again, the pizza here is pretty good, the environment is nice, and the staff is friendly. We'll just be avoiding their extensive and disappointing pasta options from now on. read more

Recently went here and had the BBQ Beef Brisket sandwich. Very disappointed. The menu described the beef as being slow cooked for 8 hours. Which, technically, isn't really long enough. 10-14 hours is ideal for a brisket, but here are several factors.. Either way, the meat was SUPER TOUGH. The flavor was lacking, they sauce they doused it which wasn't very yummy, and it took me about 1 minute to chew every bite. The other members of our party seem to have enjoyed their food... If you go here, I'd recommend AGAINST the beef brisket. As we left, I saw a small Weber "bullet smoker" in the back parking-lot behind the bldg. Smoking away... It was around 1 pm we ate- so am I to believe they had the Brisket I was served smoking at 5:00am? I have a hard time believing it, and if so, I suggest they start it at 3 or 1 am!! The sauce was bland and the pepperoni was definitely cheap (didn't curl up). The worst part was the dough. The dough was a little undercooked and way too doughy. It was advertised as neapolitan, but far from it as it was too thick. Maybe I was expecting too much, but I would rather get a pizza from dominos than here. Also they don't take credit cards. My review is not on their food, because we never got that far. Any type of dining establishment that doesn't accept credit cards, don't get my business. The waitress first asked if we have ever been there before. When saying no, she kindly explained how they do not take credit cards, but take cash, personal checks and do provide an ATM machine for their customers. Wow thanks so much. So impose an ATM withdraw fee on your customer because you feel as though you can cut corners and not have to pay credit card processing fees? Sorry but it's just something you need to factor in when opening an establishment. 18 bucks for a pizza? Yah you could afford the credit card fees. I am a fan! I have been there a few times and nothing is a better endorsement than my return business. I still have not had the pizza there, crazy since it is front an center to what they do. Their menu as many options on it and everything I have had was done well. I will be back to get that pizza eventually. The ambiance is nice, nice parking, friendly staff, and consistently good food. My one pet peeve was the homemade pasta. I think they were running out of Semolina flour and either substituted regular flour or did or something else, maybe mixed it? That is a big no-no for a person with my sensitive palate expecting the buttery, nutty flavor of semolina and instead, getting the bland starchy flavor from flour. The meal was still good, but a bit of a let down since the pasta could have been better. I am super particular and I know most people wouldn't have a clue. Let's talk cake. Wow! Light and airy with creamy frosting and we tried them all. Most restaurant cake tastes a bit freezer-burnt and overly sweet but not this cake. Leave room after dinner. On the flip side, steer clear of the French Onion Soup; desperately needs seasoning and cheese as both were lacking. We go here every time we visit Rome and will continue to do so. read more

Well everyone in town pretty much knows this place is sub par to many other restaurants in Rome, NY. The only thing saving this place is this young man with black hair and glasses making pizza. I've ordered pizza, pasta and many other items and the pizza here is the only thing good and its only good when this young man makes it. Anyone else manning the brick oven has no clue in what they're doing and the pizza ends up being a total waste of money. I remember a while back this white guy with tattoos made me a pie from there and it was horrible... just horrible but idk if he makes pizzas here anymore ...thank god!. I can't stress enough that you should only get pizza here and nothing else or you will be wasting your money because there are better places to go in Rome for pasta, sandwiches, wings or finger food. As far as the place go's.. its actually very nice inside with a family atmosphere. The wait staff is friendly and welcoming but I just wish the food was better and with what they're charging it should be...its not terrible just rather plain and forgettable, Maybe they need a better head cook who knows flavor because this place has potential .. but kudos to you pizza boy on actually knowing how to toss dough and man a brick oven properly. read more

First off after reading some of the reviews be aware they DO take Credit Cards now. Review: First off I really like DiCastro's. Overall my experience is always quite good. The server we had was wonderful and knowledgeable the decor was a little dark but unique and tasteful with lots of local color. This is a review of a dish not the restaurant in general. The brick oven pizza is first rate. sauce is good and the crust is excellent. Fresh ingredients make all the difference. I went last night with my wife and had other than pizza for the first time. I enjoy a surprise for dinner and usually ask the waiter/waitress to bring me there choice. I got the Jambalaya with a starter of chili and a glass of Lambrusco. BTW the portions are large. While the main dish was tasty it was definitely not Jambalaya more of an Italian take on a Jambalaya~ Pasta instead of rice, Italian sausage instead of andouille etc. I hesitate to say NO andouille as there was more than one type of meat in the dish but if it was andouille it didn't make it's presence known as it should. This was done in the Creole style with a Tomato base sauce. The pasta, I was told, is made in house and was cooked nicely but had none of the ability of rice to absorb and thicken the sauce that you expect in a Jambalaya. The result was a thinner sauce than I would like and a distinctly Italian flavoring and slightly bland (for Jambalaya). The chili was tomato heavy and while made with ground meat it maintained some chunkiness which is nice although I much prefer chili made with cubed meat as it is originally done. the meat again was slightly bland and overall one note no real depth or melding of flavor that should come with a good chili. The Lambrusco they serve (and sell out frequently I'm told) was a nice slightly less effervescent then normal Lambrusco. While my Jambalayaish dish was tasty it was average tasty so I've given this dish in particular 3 stars. I will be back to try something different and will always be back for the pizza. read more

One of my family's favorite places. Great owners and staff! Never had a bad meal. I am quite critical when I go out to eat, as I am a bit of a cook myself. Despite other reviews, the pizza is the best I have had anywhere including the over priced pizza places in Manhattan. The pizza has just the right amount of (great) sauce and toppings and is equally distributed throughout the whole pie, and is cooked to perfection every time. This is something that so many other places seem to forget. With no vested interest, we travel to this great restaurant from Oneida at least once a month if not more often. read more

DiCastro's is awesome!! The food and the service is great!! Our waitress Jessica was just so sweet and helpful. My husband had the roast pork and greens sandwich and my son had the chicken parm sandwich, both were so big, they both ended up eating half and taking the rest home. I had the greek pizza and medium wings, the wings were the best wings I have had in a long time, they were perfectly crispy on the outside, while still being moist and meaty on the inside, seasoned perfectly!! After a long day in the ADK coming home we stopped at Si Castro's for dinner. Never heard of it just looked like a good place and it was a great thing we stopped. The service was very nice and welcoming and the food was even better than the service. The pizza esp the sauce was very good. The wings are a good size and are delish. A great way to end our day. By far the worst dining experience I've ever had in Rome. If your over the age of 10 and like French fries your out of luck here. Our 11 year old ordered a whole pizza , she likes the left overs, and wanted a side order of fries. Our waitress explained that fries were only available with the kids meal. My wife wanted the fried shrimp appetizer with fries as an entire. Sorry honey. I asked the hostess, who I believe is one of the owners, why we couldn't get a side order of fries. She rudely explained to me that they didn't make their French fries anymore so they were only available with the kids meals. What? I must have looked confused because she tried to explain it 2 or 3 more times. If you like burnt crust pizza and $6 hotdogs for the kids, witch was boiled to perfection, then this place is for you. Went to DiCastro's for lunch today with two friends - one of which had been here before, the other two of us were eating here for the first time. Very impressive place - the decor is rustic and cozy, above our heads on the wall was a mural from Woodstock 99 with the names and autographs of all the performers - very cool!! Our server was very friendly and attentive, the food was served in a very timely manner. We all ordered sandwiches from the lunch menu - I had eggplant parmesean - very lightly breaded, served open-faced with melted mozzarella and marinara sauce, I added a topping of greens. The sandwich was delicious - come here hungry because the portions are large, the order included homemade chips which were quite tasty - regrettably I could only eat a few because I was so full from my sandwich! My friends had a pulled pork sandwich and a chicken cutlet sandwich, both said they were also very good. Can't wait to come back again - hopefully in the evening when I can try out their dinner entrees!! read more

DiCastro's pizza served the best hand tossed, brick oven pizza I have ever had. I was visiting family in Rome, NY and we debated going to DiCastro's or to a chain. In the future, there will be no debate... will go to DiCastro's hands down. In fact, I would go an hour out of my way to go to DiCastro's -- if on the thruway... it is worth a stop. We had a party of 6 on a busy Friday night and the staff worked quickly to accomodate our party. We had 2 appetizers--- coconut chicken and a fritatta - delicious. We had 3 medium pizzas between us and all were great (with leftovers). Especially enjoyed the Italian sausage. Lot's of vegetarian options, but one of our group is a vegan- the staff went out of their way to let us know there was some cheese in the red sauce, so recommended the pesto sauce pasta with no cheese. We met the owners, Jimmy and Lisa, who were really sweet. Jimmy said there had been some improvements to their crust since they started and felt they now had it perfected. I have to agree--- the taste and texture was perfect! I learned one of the secret ingredients but now all that it take for a perfectly crunch crust. This restaurant will be on our list of places to go when we are visiting again. It was cozy in the winter and the local decorations were fun to look at (Woodstock memorabilia, historical Rome photos...). I'd also like to try this place in the Summer, sit outside, drink a beer and have a little slice of heaven. MMMM! read more
